What will we learn about Sarah Palin and the McCain Campaign today?
And let’s leave Track, Bristol, Tungsten, Crowbar and Distributor Cap out of this.
The vetting of Palin and how John McCain picked her sounds eerily familiar, as McCain aides involved in the process say:
"We came out of it knowing all that we could know at the time,"
Which is a little like McCain’s post-hoc justifications for whatever "preemptive" military incursion he is trying to justify.
What McCain is really going to need is a Condi Rice-like spokesman who can say "Nobody could have Anticipated" with conviction. I’m pretty sure Dan Senor’s wife was telegraphing a strong signal about this to the campaign yesterday. She really needs to get him out of the house.
I believe that Palin is scheduled to speak on Wednesday night, though maybe they’ll move that up. Whatever the situation, she better manage to make the speech of her life.
Maybe she should talk about her little dog "Checkers" and her husband’s "sensible" Republican tricked-out snowmobile?
No pressure though.

Hey!
Hmmm. What will we learn today? A friend of mine that I trust very much passed this email along:
A sorry OT so soon. BBC is reporting this atrocity against the press/web:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7591509.stm
It is only a few steps beyond what is happening there.
Am away
We’ve been taking steps down that road since the day Bushco took office unfortunately. Most of the beginning steps were hidden – but they are there nonetheless.
How do we stop this?
Can we survive another four months?
What I’m waiting patiently for is her first national news conference. Not only to see the MSM attitude but which avenue of inquiry will be chosen. So many scandals, so few journalists.
Good morning all
“so few quality journalists”
(fixed it for ya)
¿ quality = real ?
I just can’t see the mother who, knowing this in advance, would drag her kid through all of this. There must be some anomaly in the “political Brain”
Shame on you Sarah
Mush 57
Please add to comment above:
What has been irritating me is that at first McShame said lets not politicize the hurricane and then his surrogates start politicizing immediately and McShame is planning on giving his acceptance speech from NO
This guys hypocrisy knows no bounds
I have to say, Bobo Brooks really came through for the snarker in us all this morning:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09…..rooks.html
Sounds very Putinesque (sp) to me but then Bush looked into his eyes so everything is cool. /s
The vidios yesterday, the arrest of reporters, handcuffed, defenseless. How soon disappeared?
Bush looked into Putin’s eyes, saw his own reflection there, and liked it.
ersatz edit #14: … That is the way of narcissists.
Got a sneaky feelin’ Goodman won’t let it *disappear*…….setting an alarm clock as reminder to watch DN at 8 a.m.
Amy Goodman and her producers have been released her show should be very informative today.
The St Paul Gestapo needs to be exposed
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..23051.html
She wastes state money on planes to shoot wolves people pay the state for a hunting license down here. Talk about wasting tax payers dollars.
Morning Scab going off on Wexler and BO spokesman calling Pat
ButtholeBuchannon a nazi sympathizer. Of course he ignores the fact that the Obama person said “many jews call him a nazi sympathizer” and says the Obama campaign calls him a nazi sympathizer. Joe Scab is the worst person on tv. Oh yeah, and leave sarah alone. Thanks for the post Attaturk. Is it possible palin lasts till the end of the week?
Mr.Cbl
Doesn’t Alaska have some geothermal power they could use thats free?
Minn better be saving a lot of that money Amy Kobechar ripped off. They are going to lose a lot of law suits. Personally I would like a lot of us to join in a class action that their actions interfered with our ability to receive news
They had a volcano go off recently that made Alaska a no-fly-zone. IIRC
Buchanan used his syndicated column and his office as communications director in the Reagan White House from 1981-1987 to assist pro-Nazi Eastern European organizations in trying to block the denaturalization and deportation of Karl Linnas, John Demjanjuk, and at least seventeen others who had been charged by the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations or had been convicted in federal courts of concealing war crimes in order to gain illegal entry into the U.S.
http://reformjudaismmag.net/1096ca.html
Pat is more than a Nazi Sympathizer he is a Nazi.
Some forkin’ stoopid AK thug state senator says, “Palin is just a human being, like everyone else.” Well, that’s super peachy keen……….the only criteria for a potential president is breathing. :-(
Fair warning: don’t go to scar today!
See Geo Thermal power and its free, Free Geo Thermal Power beats cheap Coal power.
That was mother nature keeping them from shooting the wildlife from the air
Such a hoot.
So in vetting SP, the Repub corruption is so thick, what is the diff between once fishing without a licenses and firing the guy who won’t fire a hated ex-brother in law? Spin, spin … she was being loyal to her sister, how noble is that? Cronyism! This is a virtue on the Repub planet. So she crossed the ethical and legal line? Picky, picky, picky. Rank has its privilege.
So, don’t explore local newspapers to keep the vetting secrecy for the big surprise of McCain’s stealing Obama’s thunder. Yeah, priorities are really in order.
So, if Palin has tv-titillating personality, she may horrifyingly clear the hurdle. (I haven’t caught the VIEW and if the girls on that will easily accept her on behalf of America) Listening to the Repubs at the convention spin her respectfully is maddening, asserting she has MORE experience than Obama. (Chris Shays on npr) And low info voters hear this crap and go away satisfied. And once again, McCain has taken the spotlight off of himself re the press and America and intensely on SP.
I think America has seen too much reality tv and can’t separate the surreal from the real any more.
So in all of America, the best we could do was dry drunk Bush, the D student, for 8 years. Rageoholic McCain who was 5th from the bottom of his naval class and proud of it, and Sarah Palin?
The Repub party convention scaled back. The boys disappear and leave the night to Laura and Cindy … and later for SP on Wed. Yeah, boys, let’s get behind the girls, including spunky Sarah, and let’s hide our agenda behind the idea of unborn babies. Meanwhile, no one consider 4,000 of grown up soldier American babies dead, 30,000 wounded, 800,000 Iraqis (some still babies) are dead (which I fear to know how much impact that actually has on the majority of the xenophobic citizenry), among other mind-freezing realities.
Everyone got their American hat on?
Thank you for this. I am going to circulate among my network. Yipes.
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Herbert today. Bobo thinks he knows “What the Palin Pick Says.” He babbles that the Sarah Palin pick allows John McCain to run the way he wants to — not as the old goat running against the upstart, but as the crusader for virtue against the forces of selfishness. Or as the moronic old fart who couldn’t/didn’t vet his desperation pick. I’ll take door #2. Mr. Herbert suggests we “Head For the High Road.” He says Sarah Palin is the latest G.O.P. distraction. She’s meant to shift attention away from the real issue of this campaign — the awful state of the nation after years of Republican rule.

The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. Glad FDL is back after last night’s glitch… Back to work today… sigh. I’ve really got to win the lottery so I can call in rich…! Have a good day.
Holy…
Open genocide. KGB SOP.
Feel like our own American “truth to power” or at least “truth about power” window is beginning to close?
Wow. Thanks for sharing that with us. I hope you manage to get it even higher circulation somehow…
Morning All :)
The Digggg has been opened..:)
Righteous rant! *G* I’ve never watched reality TV; it would appear we’re living it. :-(

Does Joe ever research anything
http://reformjudaismmag.net/1096ca.html
Wait Palin likes Pat maybe there is more here to investigate?
I think I see an Obama commercial with Joe defending Pat then we mention these facts and then point out Palin loves Pat.
Remind me again why Jewish Neocons support the Republican party?
Discuss the Palin VP pick fiasco without discussing the daughter who is the subject of thousands of headlines today? Why? It wasn’t any of us who said “yes” to McCain when he came calling, it was Sarah Palin. She bares the full responsibility for shining the bright light on her daughter, for reasons that border on the insane.
Our country’s very future is at stake. I refuse to examine issues with half of my brain tied behind my back just because the GOP and the political leaders told me not to think or speak of it.
I didn’t cause the problem and I personally refuse to be muzzled or diverted from investigating a matter which is sure to be the subject of future blackmail in the event of a McCain/Palin administration – making it a matter of national security.
Why would the Governor use the Founder of the County’s “Sexual Assault Response Team” to deliver her baby, rather than an OBGYN?
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsme…..new-an.php
Hey, W — Ya got me back catching Attaturk when I can. Thanks! Doesn’t the surreality seem to have escalated in terms of speed lately? Or is it just that having lost habaes corpus, and FISA privacy, and too many amendments downed to mention … we are seeing the results, though that is not to say that we are on the first wave of recognizing these horrors. And thanks to kool-aid dispensing MSM, most others aren’t close to seeing or getting indignant.
G*d… I think I can only talk “in rant” these days. The (we) ranting strident ones … they (we) sound untrustworthy to many, and the calming kool-aid drinkiers … sound trustworthy, at least from the magic box. Oy vey. Radio after the baby stuff came out kept talking about how crazy the netroots lefties were about SP’s privacy.
Astute netroots was incredible, smelling a “rat” in terms of the whole story. Catching baby fat on the daughter. What a bunch of detectives on the net. Wonder if it changed the outcome for the daughter. What a raw situation it is for her right now, let alone Palin, and oh yeah… maybe the rest of us?
but she was on the PTA. Good enough for me.
Democrats are insufficiently hawkish to suit them. But, they do a pretty good job of controlling the Democratic party too. Witness the fact that ex-president Carter was not allowed to speak at the Democratic National Convention: http://www.forward.com/articles/14110/
Some of us have established a relationship with doctors and use them for things despite their specialties. It does appear that Palin had established such a relationship prior to the drs. specializing
She’s like Jamie Lynn Spears’ mother.
Quick OT, Has anyone heard from Norske?. He and his family were going to the march yesterday in St Pauls. I hope they are all safe and well…
OT… great article in Harper’s this month. Postscript about Tim Russert. Lewis Lapham. He respectfully acknowledges the extensive homage and then gets to it. Says Russert’s mode was as of “an attentive and accomodating head waiter.” He was as “helpless as Charlie Rose in his infatuation of A-list celebrities.” He, like other journalists we know and love, had played bagman for an important politician. Nothing on the record respect for those in power. Favorite line he uses, “clothe your crime in the aura of inspirational anecdote.”
Same issue Roger Hodge writes, “Apparently it’s bad taste to point out that a prominent public figure is either lying or insane.” and now “ANY narrative can command the front pages.”
Also somewhere in the issue was mentioned Sweden has taken in 40,000 Iraqi refugees. US last year took in 1,608. Hmmmmm.
Thank you for that. Do you have a link to the proof of it? I’ve not read that.
I don’t think this lady is going to get dumped (or ‘withdraw”)unless that investigation situation yields anything more than so far. She may take a page out of the Libby playbook and not comment. Ongoing investigation, doncha know? The “bridge to nowhere’ thing is embarrasing but can be swept away as just more exaggeration by a politician. I mean, what she said on Friday was a lie, but one thatv can be dealt with.
I think that the alternative (dumping her) is way worse for McCain. All of this is assumimng there won’t be any more,um… disclosures.
A big thing here, though, is that Lefty Bloggers really drove that baby story. if not for the Lefty Bloggers, that wouldn’t have come out,I don’t think. Not now, anyway. Lefty bloggers were driving almost everything the first day or two.
About my relationship with MD’s no. Otherwise look at the dates of the physician in questions taking of training to specialize. No have linky
Palin is going to divide the Repugs in a way that McCain hasn’t been able to. She’s a total joke of a VP candidate.
Has she even been out of the country? I’m assuming that because she was a Beauty Pageant contestant that she travelled around America a little, but then again, she was 2nd place to Miss Alaska, so maybe she just went around Alaska.
Do any of you remember a novel from the 80s called The Beans of Egypt, Maine by Carolyn Chute? It’s been so long I don’t remember the details any more, but this whole Palin tale just dredged up memories of that novel. It’s been so long I don’t remember the details, just the flavor, so I looked it up on Amazon and it looks like, either with weird prescience or amazing coincidence, a new paperback edition came out yesterday. Don’t remember how it turned out, but I’m sure I have it around here somewhere….
Lokywoky:
Whilst I have high regard for you judging from your paticipation at FDL, I must assert that the diction in the “student’s” letter you have presented is too formalised and much too sophisticated for most students. Is this person a graduate student? Where? What course of study?
I have taught writing to both American and to foreign students, and I have had a very long career as full professor in both history of ideas and scientific fields. Even my British students did not commonly administer English as well as the purported writer of the letter allegedly from this student.
Mind, I am not impugning you. Could you please supply rather fuller details to assist us in assessing the origin and purport of this letter?
Kind regards,
~c
Has she ever been to a real city. Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, has less than 250K. Does she have any inkling as to what the 299,340K that don’t live in Alaska have to deal with?
I know I phrased this as a “Checkers” like moment.
But let me say, there’s NO WAY she’s going to get dumped or allowed to withdraw.
1. The base will go absolutely ape-crap. They will stay home in droves if she is gone from the ticket and replaced with Lieberman or Ridge like McCain wanted.
2. McCain has a couple of Bush-like features. One is an immature notion of “chivalry” which will make him think of Palin as a damsel-in-distress and he’ll fight for her. The other is, like Bush, he’s also immaturely stubborn and will not make a mistake.
3. Her leaving the ticket now will be far worse than her staying, no matter how much she hurts the ticket — pulling an Eagleton would be disastrously worse.
So she’s staying — no matter what. Damn the torpedoes full-wank ahead.
Thanks, WW, Every time I start to feel better about Obama, he breaks off another major piece of the Democratic Party soul … in the name of strategy.
I always forget/minimize that SOME–I know, it is SOME, of my assumed liberal Jewish comrades (I’m in NYC), ain’t so liberal when it comes to militarism (and the Israel Lobby downright scares me) … and that the fundies, the Catholics, and the Jewish hawks make up formidable bedfellows fighting Dem Party with their respective and formidable single issues.
She has been to Germany, Ireland, and Kuwait (last to visit NG unit I guess).
I agree, but when the damage starts to outweigh the benefits, she might still be asked to leave. Think of Harriet Miers.
I think that’s more countries than W. had been to before he was President.
Was this all kabuki so that someone truly repellant can
be put on the ticket?
After Palin makes her inevitable withdrawal “for family-way reasons”,
who will iher replacement be:
Liieberman?
Lindsey Graham ?
or
A Dobson-ian choice?
1. yup.
2. yup.
3. yup.
I’ve seen the idea being kicked around that she’ll be gone after teh cionvention and ten McCain can pick who he “really wants” (like Lieeberman) without having to deal with the delegates to get it approved, just party hacks. I think that’s wrong.
Most of the stuff on her is crap. it was onky a few days ago really, that we were all on a high after Barack’s speech. We’ve lost that so quickly because of this putz? We need to get that back and pound these people on the issues. Keep digging into her background? Of course. But she’s not going anyplace, in my view.
Her name is Klobuchar.
What money has she ripped off? And from whom? Enquiring Minnesotans (me) want to know what you are on about here.
OT: 10,000 stayed behind in NOLA they estimate. So glad it wasn’t as bad as was thought.
I tend to agree, though if formal charges are filed against her in Troopergate that might change things.
The key thing in her favor is your point #1 — that’s the reason she was chosen in the first place, and unless the base becomes disenchanted with her, she stays. No matter how many the vaunted independents begin to turn away from the GOP ticket.
But you have to admit, watching the stories come out yesterday — one after another after another — it’s kind of like watching the Gustav coverage on the Weather Channel. There’s a big old storm headed straight for the campaign, and while it’s possible it’s going to turn away at the last minute and everyone will be fine, people are starting to wonder if evacuation is the right move.
And like the Gustav coverage, there are also some stubborn old coots who want to ride the damn thing out on their shrimp boats.

Boy, the bar ain’t that high, after all, is it?
I just think most of these things are pretty small potatoes. As with the knocked up daughter, McCain will say he knew about them (bullshit) and still thought she was the most qualified soul mate.
You seemed to imply that the doctor who delivered the Goveron’s (alleged) baby had been her doctor for a long time – even prior to the doctor becoming a rape counseling specialist. Where did you hear that? Did you hear/read that?
another reason to keep sarah around. as long as she doesn’t puke on her shoes, she’ll be said to have demonstated she’s qualified.
BTW, I walked in a local parade yesterday with the local Democrats. This was a VERY large event for this rural Indiana area and our county is heavily dominated by Republicans. The Democratic Party here has barely been treading water since I’ve lived here.
Yesterday we outnumbered the Republican turnout in the parade by at least 3-1. We had the county Party float, followed by people from the Obama campaign with a large Banner, then a float with quite a few walkers supporting Rep. Joe Donnelly (a blue dog, but at least a Democrat) and then at least two more groups of supporters with vehicles for local candidates. It’s the biggest presence I’ve ever seen for Democrats in this area.
On the gubernatorial level, Republicans couldn’t give away their “My Man Mitch” t-shirts. After the parade they still had stacks of their t-shirts.
It’s enough to give one hope — luckily I’m too cynical for that, there’s still too much work to be done.
Sorry about the spelling. From what I have read she was one of the driving forces to give $50 million to each state for security at the conventions
Lawyering up in the Troopergate mess is not exactly small potatoes, nor is her history as mayor of hiring an old Ted Stevens aide as a lobbyist to get earmarks for Wasilla through congress.
Anyone gotten a comment from John “I Hate Earmarks” McCain on that one yet?
That image of Palin as the spunky maverick reformer from the North is taking a real beating.
Lilly, have you read Jerry Mander’s cogent book advocating the abolition of television? It is a very serious argument.
wooHOO!
nice! love hearin’ this, Sufilizard
I read that a few days ago
Sorry, meant to address Libby, not “Lilly” in my #71 here. Apologies to her.
Good morning folks.
On the Gustav front, any news from Katymine in the upper ninth ward?
katymine lives in AZ, mebbe you are thinking of someone else?
Mornin’ Attaturk and Firedogs,
(mrs cbl here)
sigh, had a few moments yesterday where it looked like she would leave – there was even a symptomatic “why, there’s no reason she should leave” denial denial from some anonymous high ranking Party official .and I was soooo looking forward to some good ol fashion Gooper internecine warfare – the mere thought of Dobson going on a McRampage after he publicly flip flopped on McCan’t made me all tingly.
loved your “sensible” reference :D
When I say “small potatoes” I mean interms of what it takes to get someone bounced from a ticket. Those are not “small potatoes” as campaign issues, I defintely agree with that.
I guess so, I’m going to go back to find the right nickname she uses. Thanks.
Can your friend send this to the NYT and as many major US newspapers as possible as a letter? or an OpEd? Might be helpful to shorten and add credentials at the beginning (to say “I live in AK and know Wasilla and Palin well”), but send it to as many as possible.
Don’no…….but scar sure as spit got the message. *g*
Makes sense. Did you see the daddy’s facebook page (or whatwever it was) ? “I’m a redneck.” I don’t think he’ll be onstage. Then again, the Repubs would love him. He’s the base.
my tv blew a while ago and I am conducting the experiment personally. radio and internet is keeping me informed fine. will check out that work. thanks.
Dakinikat’s from NOLA,
mebbe you were thinking of her, haven’t seen her around for a while tho.
aint it the best!, mr cbl and I had very similar experience at the July 4th parade in our once very red county.
mad, mad props to the Obama ground game – every democrat’s wingman :D
Plain’s mother-in-law doesn’t know if she’ll vote for Mcain?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/1/211121/7416
That Palin’s lawyer wants to go via the Executive privilege’s route?
Flein’s letter and the Judiciary’s letter for the response inside in pdf form.
ground game good in FL. Still 3-4 points down.
You nailed it, all those Kat got me confused. I know she stayed from her FB page. Really hope she’s doing well. Thanks again ellie, wishing all is well with you.
Ms ANNaNola ? she said she was getting outta Dodge – hope to hear from all soon.
in whose poll ?
he’s jumped another 2 pts from his convention bounce nationally over the week end
I think the whole point of this was to curtail the afterglow from the DNC. The whole kerfuffle is probably decoy for the “real” VP nomination (as someone…Perris and maybe others proposed on threads yesterday) at least it fits the pattern. Best thing that happened to RNC was the hurricane so they have an excuse for poor turnout and lack of unartificial support.
Thanks for explanation.
same here, hope you and yours are doin’ great.
(I am so behind on my FBing.)
Palin’s lawyer seems to side with Beerfartliberal:
(From the Anchorage Daily News)
nice try Counselor, but your client has already publicly made several contradictory statements
haven’t seen a weekend or post-weekend poll. That’s good news. Close. Will stay that way. Like Obama’s organization — especially since he skipped the state in the primary season. McCain has the advantage of the evangelicals who love Sarah and the anti-gay referendum. Close.
that’s what she said earlier. pretty much “I’m governor. I can fire the guy for any reason or no reason.” But she welsomes an investigation and will cooperate fully. Of course.
And you would expect him to say shes guilty? /s
Has Mrs. Palin indicated what percentage of time she would be devoting to motherhood, and what percentage of time to vice-presidenthood ?
Yes, the party of family values.
Libby, in 68 years I have never had a teevee. Just never liked the medium. I am a voracious reader and took up playing ‘cello in mid-life. I consider myself quite well-informed on any number of issues, without teevee.
Indeed, I will not allow such a distasteful intruder as teevee into my home.
And with my chamber music, my beloved cats, reading, writing, and trying to stay decently informed in my field and politically, there is no time for teevee!
I think that I like your “experiment”. Let the damn box go!

Publisher Comments:
A total departure from previous writing about television, this book is the first ever to advocate that the medium is not reformable. Its problems are inherent in the technology itself and are so dangerous — to personal health and sanity, to the environment, and to democratic processes — that TV ought to be eliminated forever. Weaving personal experiences through meticulous research, the author ranges widely over aspects of television that have rarely been examined and never before joined together, allowing an entirely new, frightening image to emerge. The idea that all technologies are “neutral,” benign instruments that can be used well or badly, is thrown open to profound doubt. Speaking of TV reform is, in the words of the author, “as absurd as speaking of the reform of a technology such as guns.”

About the Author
Jerry Mander holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Economics, spent 15 years in the advertising business, including five as president and partner of Freeman, Mander & Gossage, San Francisco, one of the most celebrated agencies in the country. After quitting commercial advertising, he achieved national fame for his public service campaigns, leading the Wall Street Journal to call him “the Ralph Nader of adevertising.” In 1972 he founded the country’s first non-profit ad agency, taking leave of that in 1974. Mander is co-author of The Great International Paper Airplane Book.
Has she figured out what the job is yet?
I think everyone is overlooking the possibility that Abstinence Only Education works, and that what we have here is an Alaskan Immaculate Conception?
Raaght!
BT’s upstairs swimming around
Pulling out the “But Clinton did . . .” comparison was what surprised me.
Why it surprised me, however, I can only put down to not having had enough coffee this morning.
And I recall that Pat has written columns questioning whether the US should have gone into WW2 against the Nazis. Yeah, he was sympathetic to the Nazis, sort of… ;-)
Of course, Pat would say he was an “isolationist”.
I think I read something that after her HS Basketball Team won the State Championship that money was raised (from refunds given by the States Re-Investment fund, I suppose) to send them off to Hawaii…which is sorta “foreign”.
BTW One myth that the right-wing is pushing is that Sarah got her name “Barracuda” because she won that HS Championship by hitting the winning shot while playing on a broken foot.
The TRUTH is that she was the teams point guard earlier in the season and broke her foot. She didn’t play most of the last part of the season, but the coach suited her up for the championship game. When Wasilla was up by a substantial amount, he put Palin in during the closing minutes. She was fouled and shot a couple of free throws to “ice” the game. And she went to Hawaii as a result!
