Put down your best guesses for when, why, and how Sarah Palin will bail from the GOP ticket. Here’s mine:
When: Friday, September 5, 2008, at 8:30 PM Central Daylight Time
Why: Take advantage of the standard Friday afternoon/evening news black hole, and hope that Tropical Storms Hanna and Ike suck up as much media attention as possible, much as Hurricane Gustav helped keep her story from getting maximum media play over the last weekend.
How: A tearful Peggy-Noonanesque dolphins-and-rainbows speech about how she suddenly remembered that she has a special-needs infant that she should be bonding with at this early stage in his life:
"When John McCain asked me to be his running mate, it was a great honor that I literally could not refuse. These past few days have been among the most treasured of my life. But I have concluded, and God has ordained, that my duty lies at home in Alaska with my family and our newest addition, Trig, with all his blessedness…"
She might get in a few jabs at That Evil Jewish Secular Liberal Media, but I doubt it — her job here is to pretend that she’s bowing out of the ticket for actual personal reasons, not because she should never have been put on it in the first place. If she makes any reference to the controversies surrounding her, she makes it clear that they are the real reason for her stepping down — and that she cannot do, because the whole point of her being jettisoned now is to keep these controversies from spending too much time in the public eye and eating into the public’s opinion of McCain’s judgement.
Caveat: If she isn’t booted off the ticket, it’s because a) it’s too late to repair the damage anyway, and/or b) she provides McCain with the perfect scapegoat for his failed campaign when it augers into the ground in November: "I could have won if only I’d been allowed to pick my good buddy Joe Lieberman!"

Palin’s Intradeto be withdrawn as Republican VP nominee/candidate numbers are about 14 now (they were over 18 earlier). Worse for McShame, the trade volume is increasing.
I don’t think Palin will last if these numbers climb above 20 or so. I predict change (isn’t that Obama’s thing?) before Thursday when McShame accepts coronation or else by weekend when news cycle is on to hurricanes or something else.
We need a Sarah Palin Pool.

I think they know they won’t win so they are working on themes for long-term. For sure they are trying to help AK senate seats and to try to keep some of that corruption under wraps. So perhaps better to go down in a blaze of glory than to look the fool switch. This is not the SCOTUS

Exactly. Entertainment Tonight had a piece on her today that just outstripped most of the TV puff pieces being done on her by the “serious news” shows.
I don’t think she’s going to leave. At least not that quickly. It would doom them for sure. And the rovian policy is never apologize, never back down. Look how long it took them to dump Miers, Michael Brown, Rove, Rumsfeld…….

Before the week is out, she’s going to wish she never heard the words “John Sidney McCain III”.
Oooh–John Oliver piece on TDS–just showed newest reporter (Wyatt?) trying to ask Rove a question at the convention–but Rove–the FOX commenter, dontcha know–kept walking, whisked along (I think) by Steve Schmidt, his protege and would-be savior of the McCain campaign. I don’t think it can happen by the 5th. Right now they’re in Denial, which should last until Thursday. Next comes Anger, which though lasting forever, should visibly fade by Sunday. Acceptance will be a closely-held secret on Monday, with Tuesday through Thursday divided up between Unsourced Leaks, Alternative Candidate Procurement, and Media Orchestration.
Look for the roll-out Fri evening, after the news.

BTW here again is various documentation that would address the question of whether Palin really did have a child last April.
1. Pictures of her visibly pregnant
2. Physician records, pre-natal appointments, lab tests, imaging, and bills
3. Hospital records, lab tests, delivery records, and bills
4. A birth certificate
5. A medical release for travel in late pregnancy
6. Outside eyewitness testimony attesting that Palin was visibly pregnant
7. DNA testing
All except the DNA testing should be available now. It says a lot that Palin has not offered to produce any of this. As a candidate for national office some of this should come out just to show she is in good health. Palin could have her physician sign a sworn affidavit attesting to dates and times of pre-natal visits. The delivering doctor could do the same. How hard is this? But so far all we have gotten is evasions and misdirection.
Talk about political master strokes, McCain never made a better decision.

Hugh at 66, there is no way she should do a thing, not a single thing, to respond to accusations about her own child, and if the other side did this, we’d rightly be disgusted.
It is very strange that the McCainiacs weren’t able to get Palin’s doctor to make a quick appearance on TV and talk about Trig’s birth and the Down’s syndrome angle – that would have killed the rumours immediately and they wouldn’t have had to acknowledge the internet traffic. A dog that didn’t bark, for sure. There has been no conclusive evidence about Governor Palin’s “pregnancy”, but it is starting to seem as plausible as a loyal friend of John Edwards stepping up to being the father of Rielle Hunter’s baby, the same baby that John Edwards visits and plays with in the middle of the night in hotels under assumed names.

It’s not the oil companies this time. That was 2006 when oil companies manipulated the cost of gasoline sending it down in advance of the November election. The price actually bottomed out precisely on election day.
This time around its the financial houses who are pushing crude oil futures lower facilitating the lowering of gas prices. As I have said before excessive speculation is price manipulation. So what is happening now is unsurprising, even if it is essentially unreported in the MSM.

This is the same mommy whose water broke at 4am, but went and did her speech, then hopped a plane for an eight-hour flight to Anchorage AND drove herself for 45 minutes to the Mat-Su Hospital outside of Wasilla, before she would consent to have the child. (A special-needs child, which she already knew from prenatal testing, and therefore even more fragile than most.)

On CNN, Jeffrey Toobin just said that tonight at the RNC showed the Republicans to be the “old white guy party”, and that while Sarah Palin may change that to some extent, America has changed but the Republicans have not. Previously, there was pushback on CNN about McCain’s blowing off Larry King for Campbell Brown’s interview, and disapproval of W’s criticism of the “angry left”. Palin may appeal to the evangelical base, but McCain’s base in the press seems to be crumbling a little.

Mommy…It was Randi Rhodes…I met her at the infamous San-Francisco-event-ending-in-firing. I brought a picture of us both when we were in USAF tech school at Shepard AFB. It was a blast. We had cocktails and reminisced after her show.
I guess my disgust level is higher than yours. You beg the question by asserting that it is her child. I would point out that public officials, especially one running for the second highest office in the country, have a duty to put to rest questions that go to their character. This happens all the time. Jeremiah Wright was not part of Obama’s campaign but Obama had to defend himself and address the issue anyway. This is no different. OTOH hiding behind a 5 month old special needs child that I do find disgusting but that’s just me.
Let Bristol choose if she wants to marry or not, and let Levi decide too. Geez.

The Sarah Palin political death watch is jest a closeup fragment of the larger picture which is the death of the GOP bein’ played out inside the Excel Center. Yesterday, comin’ home from the day in the streets of St Paul, I tried ta sort through all the truly remarkable things I saw or experienced in the heat of the best Labor Day Minnesota has seen in 50 years. The thing that kept comin back to me was the image of the GOPers trapped behind the fence surroundin’ the convention center: white, over 60 years old, Dixie accents with stationary smiles plastered on faces stretched white with fear. And that is what I learned…the decaying body of the once and formerly powerful Grand Old Party is laid out inside the Excel Center as the delegates rustle around like frightened mortuary attendants lookin’ to console family survivors while adjustin’ the lighting and repositioning the body to capture some image of life in the cold corpse.
The Sarah Palin political wake is jest part of the larger comedy bein’ played out…the funeral will be the first Tuesday in November.

I think they are just unwinding some of their long positions. This isn’t particularly hard to do when you control the market. Some of this is probably preemptive to stave off regulation down the road and/or to prepare for it if it happens. It is also politically very convenient. And your right if it fell apart on them they would just get the government to bail them out in the name of market stability. So really no downsides that I can see.

I don’t really believe he is thinking these thing through that well. He is, as has always been his wont, flying by the seat of his pants. As a geneticist, I strongly recommend that any woman who is pregnant with a fetus with Down syndrome should make every effort to deliver the child near a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that has pediatric cardiologists on staff. Most of the babies with Down syndrome that I’ve seen have done well at the delivery, but there’s always a chance that there will be complications at the delivery, and you want to be ready to move the child to intensive care if the baby isn’t doing well. The chance that such a woman would give birth at 50,000 feet in the air should be minimized, to put it mildly.

The whole story strikes me as weird, but I am not am MD or biomed. What I find really bizarre is that she left Dallas, with some of the finest hospitals in the nation, for the little podunk hospital in her home town. Does not compute.
McCain’s pick of Palin was like W appointing Bernie Kerik head of Homeland Security – appointing someone to a very important job without any scrutiny or real qualifications. While it was embarrassing for W to pull Bernie, it wasn’t a big political cost to Bush – the same can’t be said for McCain to pull Palin at this stage, but I do think that she is going to have to make a big “Checkers had puppies” speech at the convention tomorrow night to stop the bleeding in the press.
My hubby and I were sarcastically commenting on the fact that a woman has to be past her childbearing years to be given permission to hold office by the GOP. I don’t know if that’s really true, but it felt true when we were gobsmacked by the Palin pick.

There was an Obama campaign person on first by himself, them Ventura, and now a lame panel. Not quite like last week, is it?
Considering that full labor typically begins within 24 hours of the water breaking at term, and she noticed amniotic fluid and a change in the quality of her contractions before she even gave her speech in Dallas, we’re talking about a 50/50 chance she goes into full labor on the 8 hour commercial flight if her water had broken pre-speech.
When you also consider that it was reported in the Anchorage Daily News that labor was induced upon arrival at her community hospital, and also considering she was 4 weeks premature, it suggests to me her water had in fact broken instead of being mere leakage, since typically you would want to try to have the premature baby gestate longer.
When you take a step back and think about this from a medically informed standpoint, and that her community physician was evidently aware of amniotic leakage and a change in the quality of her contractions from 4000 miles away knowing it was a high risk pregnancy, and she did not get physically examined before boarding that flight, this story borders on utterly unbelievable. This is a mother of 4 who knows the drill.
If these actions are not unbelievable from a standpoint of extremely poor judgment, then by default, dubious from a standpoint of plausibility. Take your pick.

sorry, but I think you guys are way wrong. McCain won’t kick her off and look like a total dick overt the stuff that’s come out about her so far. There’s stuff out there worth looking into (the maverickess label is bullshit, yes? she was close with Ted Stevens, yes? she pocketed lotsa earmark money, yes?) So far, she’s been OK for them. I think she’s got the party faithful a whole lot more jazzed than independent voters. But the party was shellshocked Thursday night after Obama’s speech. She helped the party with that. I worked yesterday at my hospital and brought this up with four other docs I was sitting with for lunch, two of whom were women, and one of whom is 5 months pregnant.
When I told them about Palin’s story of how she began leaking amniotic fluid and was having contractions, but gave a speech in Dallas anyway, and then proceeded to take an 8 hour commercial flight to go deliver in rural Alaska, delivered hours after the flight, along with the fact that the 17y/o is pregnant now and that there is speculation that she *might have been last spring* as well, to a person every single one was highly incredulous of Palin’s account. The most incredulous were the two female docs, and one immediately put it together that one real possibility is that Palin got a call that her daughter was in labor in rural Alaska and immediately returned. You can fudge conception and due dates with cooperation. Not rocket science.
I guess when you work in a tertiary care hospital, the histories of people you hear on a daily basis far far stranger than this get you to think unconventionally when implausible situations arise. Never a dull moment, I tell ya.
You are not alone. It is probably the most consistent thing I have had to explain since I left there 20 some years ago. Eastern third is hilly (more so as you go east) and the eastern half is wooded (mostly oak-hickory forest, with some southern pine in SE OK). It is on the southwestern edge of the Ozarks (north of the Arkansas River) and on the western edge of the Ouashita Mountains south of there.
Leave the pregnancy stuff to the Enquirer, I say. It’s a bright shiny object, and there are so many more substantive scandals to explore.

I’m not from Alaska, but I am originally from New Mexico and I can identify a bit with this territorial feeling. Seems like no one knows it’s a part of the US, people won’t take checks from banks with NM in the name, they ask you where you learned to “speak such good American” (no shit), can’t find it on a map, etc.
And it’s poor like Alaska and depends on the Feds and tourists for money. So you hype it up for survival.

And the Republicans have attacked teenagers like this for getting pregnant and going on welfare. Of course, Bristol Palin’s Mom is flush with money…so I guess that won’t be an issue? Or will it? After all, McCain draws SSI despite still being a Senator AND married to a multi-millionairess.

It’s certainly not impossible. Women can get pregnant very soon after delivery. Bristol could be closer to 12-14 weeks instead of 20. Down the line, she could deliver a *a month pre-mature* and it stays tidy.
I agree that there are plenty of other things to chase down, but I would like some questions to be asked about this on national tv – her wild adventure in a pressurized vessel at 35,000 ft. for 8 hrs after leaking amniotic fluid. As I’ve been told, Gov Palin trained her guns right in the face of Putin and the Russians who would invade the “Nation” of Alaska. & her son is going to Iraq to personally kill Saddam. As a “current” US citizen, she has even more military experience than our current President.
But I believe that we should give Alaska & the Panama Canal Zone full independence from the United States! Let us do this before the general elections. Citizens should run for office in their own nations and not the USA!

Whenever I’m out driving I tune my AM to the local talk radio stations (Texas). There isn’t alot of prescreening, and sometimes you get opposing points of view to the host. I didn’t hear anyone call in for the past few days that was critical of the Palin nomination.

The McCain campaign has never been on very solid ground. An “Eagleton Moment” could end up costing them the election all by itself. If I were on McCain’s campaign team, that would be my very worst nightmare right this minute.
McCain has been running consistently behind Obama, with a small bounce just before and during the DNC. Palin’s presence on the ticket could hurt him. Probably already has.
But her absence, at this late stage of the game, could sink his campaign beyond all hope of recovery.

I didn’t get it tagether ta join the vets march but my 20 year old daughter who convinced me 5 months ago that Obama was the real deal and I were in the front group yesterday with Veterans Against the War and families of veterans…what I learned was that youngsters like my daughter have a debilitating fear of the police. What I think she learned from the experience was that you can not live in fear and be a responsible citizen and she was exhilarated and encouraged by the experience of being in a crowd of thousands who wouldn’t let her be afraid.
A number of us “old timers” were talkin’ to others around us of the need to rid ourselves of fear, that the police can smell it on ya and that if there is to be violence, it will come from the police and there is nuthin we can do to stop it except stand closer tagether and get each others back.
I can now confess that I DID take some fear away from the experience yesterday…the Imperial Storm Troopers who lined the intersections of the parade route and were dressed in Black Kevlar with smoked visors, gas masks and super Tasers didn’t have any individual or unit identification on them. There was much discussion among some of the older veterans of peace marches that they were contract mercenaries, maybe Blackwater. I don’t know but I do know that they were not ordinary police auxiliary,. They were disciplined, young and many of the Minneapolis bike police that were riddin shotgun for the main body of the march nodded or signaled recognition to many of them…I don’t know if the recognition was from trainin excercises, briefings or signaled that they were special Twin Cities police. I do know however, that I came away with an intractable ache in my stomach that I haven’t experienced since 1966-67. The shock troops were well trained, well equipped and fearless…the kids that went under the barriers to tweak these shock troops were lucky to get away alive!

First off, I haven’t changed my mind, Palin’s in it until the bitter end. And let’s hope it is a bitter end, because she might be even crazier than crazy John McCain.
Caveat: If she isn’t booted off the ticket, it’s because a) it’s too late to repair the damage anyway, and/or b) she provides McCain with the perfect scapegoat for his failed campaign when it augers into the ground in November: “I could have won if only I’d been allowed to pick my good buddy Joe Lieberman!”
Maybe a), partly because I just can’t think of anyone who’d be helpful to them at this point. Guliani has way too much baggage of his own, Romney’s a heathen*, and Huckabee doesn’t seem to be on the list. Sadly, I think Palin’s not much worse than the best they could muster right now.
As for b), I assume you’re being sarcastic. This is McCain’s last try – no excuses are going to matter in the end.

I thought she’d be gone in about 10 days to two weeks. But, now I hope she doesn’t because she is the gift that is going to keep on giving all the way to election day. The news media finally has something to do; Find out who in the hell this person actually is!
Repubs can repeat all the talking points they want to in support because she is on “their team,” and they are programmed like trick dogs to do so……… but few people outside of Alaska at all have even heard of her before this. Repubs haven’t even heard of her let alone the sane rest of us.
There is a tidal wave of opinion forming that this woman is just too inexperienced and too unknown to the rest of the country to be allow to occupy a spot just one cardiac arrest or stroke in a 72 year old man away from being the most powerful person on earth. This question highlights McCain’s age and judgement in a way that is not useful to him.
I just don’t trust somebody I don’t know. And even if she gives a great speech tonight I don’t think two months is long enough for voters to establish enough rapport with her in light of the fact that she looks like she will be fighting legal problems and controversies from here through election night.

McCain is tethered to Palin now and couldn’t get rid of her if he wanted to. The gop will use their voodoo to get the troopergate issue quashed and they’ll train her to say maverick, pow, the surge is working and to stay away from talking about how God is tasking them in Iraq. (Personally, I believe she misunderstood and that God said *taxing*, not *tasking* She won’t be leaving the scene, unfortunately.
