Like a sitcom that’s testing badly, the GOP Convention keeps getting repackaged. The first theme, "Not Ready ‘08" was abandoned after McSame picked Sarah Palin.
Republican organizers said the convention aides in charge of reviewing every speech delivered from the lectern are now on the watch for blunt attacks on Mr. Obama’s readiness to lead, and reviewing how much to emphasize what had been the convention theme: "Not Ready ‘08." They are aware that such criticism in a high-profile setting would provide an opportunity for Democrats to make the same charge against Ms. Palin, who has almost no foreign policy experience and has been governor for just 20 months.
Oh well. Then they tried "Country First."![]()
Now, finally, we’re getting, "Serving A Cause Greater Than Self."
And what cause would that be? Seceding from the United States? Because my friends, that’s a cause patriots fringe wingnuts in Alaska can believe in.

“All yer money belong to us” didn’t poll well.
McCain camp denying NYtimes Bumiller report that Palin was an AIP member for two years.
Never heard of teh Google.
Idjits.
Everyone knows you don’t roll out a new product in August. Maybe third time’s a charm since it’s now September.
“Constitution? I got yer Constitutiuon right here, boyo.”
Lemme see:
“Serving a cause greater than self”
Does that not conflict on every level with the whole Ayn Rand/capitalist theology of making money for me, me, me which rules the GOP? Whatever happened to “enlightened self-interest” as the polestar of all policies?
No – this is an explicitly, though subtly, religious theme.
Now BT. It seems the McShitforbrains and baggage campaign has released all of the GILF-on-a-ticket voter registration cards and, surprise, she has always been a repub. As if one could register as an America hater.
Mr.Cbl
McCain canceled his interview with Larry King tonight…methinks he doesn’t want to answer any Palin questions.. Chickensh*t.
Or maybe “Ready To Lead Eight years Ago. Today, Not So MucH”
Let’s have a contest, name that Republican Convention theme:
Country First becomes Which Country?….
Geez I guess they really do want to lose
they are all a bunch of wingnuts the whole damn lot of them
good bye and good riddance !!!!
If nothing else, the wheels have come off the apple cart re: McCain’s cushy relationship with the press after McCain’s threatening attempts to quash the Palin scandals.
Gee, I thought “Country First” had a nice ring to it! It harkens back to the days of “America Fist.” Charles Lindbergh and the German-American Bund.
“Secede First, Answer Questions Later”
“Seceding in Iraq”
Has anyone been “monitoring” (I could get really fond of that term ’cause who the spit would “watch” it?) cnn today to know whether it’s true that bush 3.0 pulled out of an interview on larry king tonight? If so, wonder if it will be remarked upon?
Josh Marshall: If you can’t stand up to Larry King, how can you stand up to…anybody.
They might as well, nobody is paying attention anyway.
Uh-oh, looks like more trouble down on the farm:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..23147.html
According to the Wolfster, it’s twue, it’s twue!
Hey, LS -
Didya hear that on cnn or a blog?
“Serving a cause greater than self…Big Oil!”
All the pompous asshats like tweety and wolf see themselves as big league long ball hitters and Larry King as an A league powder puff show. Tweety was already puffed up about it tonight.
Mr.Cbl
Jeez, money + BS = GOP
I’m already sick of hearing about Palin…reform, experienced (!) governor, fresh face, competent…she has more executive experience than any senator might have! including McCain! Jeepers, why didn’t she enter the primary????!!!! Oh right, the family thing.
I do like hearing about Gustav which brings up echoes of Katrina which brings up Bush/McCain at their callous worst.
i wonder what kind of cheesy country tune they’ll come up with to sell thier cheesy canidate
A New Motto: To Hate Democrats and Immigrants!
That covers most of the US Population.
Hilarious.
anyone else notice that the wingnuts are attributing the mommy wars to the left? hahahahahahah! women from the left are saying Palin should have stayed home! hahahahahahaha! never mind those who are holding down two jobs and raising two kids who plan to vote for Obama.
ROFLMAO
It seems really important to point out that Palin has more executive experience than McCain. It might make a great campaign commercial.
As if they didn’t have enough problems, the supermarket tabloids are picking on poor little Sara, the Enquirer claiming they were about to break the fact of the daughter’s pregnancy and that Palin had arranged a shotgun wedding next week. But the daughter objected. They notified the Palins that they were about to publish the story and that’s why McCain was forced to make the announcement prematurely. The Enquirer claims to have explosive news about regarding troopergate but ya gotta buy the rag (or read it in line.)
Michelle Bernard, what a liar
I don’t know but they’ll probably invite John Ashcroft to sing it.
Joe Scarborough just said that story isn’t true, that Sarah’s been a member of the Repbulic party all along and she wasn’t a member of that secessionist party.
Joe is an impartial journalist and he wouldn’t lie about this. And Tweety wouldn’t let him get away with lying on his show.
Thanks, I didn’t know her name, but when I turned to look at the TV I thought “oh, her. figures.”
Country First

Yeah! “lots of rumors flying around out there…”
I love it when Joe gets all protective of the wimmins.
CNN earlier today.

burning, er, banning books –Mayor Palin: A Rough Record
By Nathan Thornburgh / Wasilla, Alaska
I wouldn’t laugh too hard– I saw such comments on this blog and others. I’ve seen many comments to the effect that she shouldn’t have taken the job because she’s got 5 kids.
Well, maybe those commenters were Republic infiltrators.
Serving a cause greater than self…Big Oil!”
“Serving a cause greater than self…The Rich!”
“Serving a cause greater than self…Republicans!”
I saw the wolf state that McShame backed out of an interview with John King because of an interview last night where Campbell Brown blasted McShame spokesperson Tucker Bounds
Lovely Norah re: leaving the daughter alone…no one knows anything about her as she hasn’t spoken since Friday (or been seen even) and that’s all we have to go on.
sorry, I’m confused. He was forced to make the announcement early about his VP pick or about Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy?
I might be reading too fast…
Oh, my goodness gracious! *g* Have spent today’s TV time watching Free Speech TV with Amy and other real American journalists who are trying to save the country. Dial-up so can’t watch the vid stuff y’all get to see on-line. Switching over to cnn now (for as long as I can stand it). :-(
ok, i just want someone to come up with video of Palin’s beauty queen contest. that’s what i wanna see, and out there, everywhere.
The daughter.
Well, perhaps those words were simply to throw the GOP words back into GOP faces? dunno. maybe not.
I didn’t mean that to sound like an attack on you, but I think we have plenty of ammo to use against Palin. We don’t need to use her motherhood against her. I agree with Michelle Bernard on this one. But I gotta admit, Michelle’s hard to figure out sometimes. She can sound kind of conservative.
The thing that’s interesting about this is that I think is the easiest of all to combat. I saw a quote supposedly in one of his books where he denies that he decided to run for any do-gooder type desire. He says he simply developed the ambition to be President. A few well-placed ads in his own words and viola!
That’s crazy, progressive women, by and large, don’t feel that way.
Frankly I would just tell the truth about her.. what I’m hearing from all of my friends on the Hill: that she was one of two people acceptable for the job to Ayatollahs Dobson and Bauer (their tool) and the only one of those two acceptable to McCain (the other one being Gov Huckabee). With their (long withheld) endorsements, each delivered within two hours of the Palin announcement, McSame theoretically secured for himself some 18 million votes. In other words, her presence of the ticket, without any vetting, is attributable solely to the appeasement of the wingnut clerics who run the American Jihad.
I’ve always found Michelle Bernard a vapid repository of the Conventional Wisdom.
That’s it.
The announcement Monday about the daughter’s pregnancy.
She IS a conservative! Big time.
A cause greater than self – Money
Palin’s selection is an unmitigated disaster for the GOP-not because of the daughter’s pregnancy but the growing narrative of McCain’s incompetent vetting and the drip, drip, drip of Palin’s extremism (way to go after those independent voters, Krusty!). In the image driven world of politics, Obama’s looking more and more Presidential every day while the daily shenanigans of the GOP look more and more like a lost episode of the Three Stooges.
Watch Obama’s numbers climb into the mid-fifties next week while McCain’s head for pony territory.
Here’s the thing most moms, especially single moms and married working moms (the vast majority of moms) will detest. While they struggle to put food on the table and get kids here and there, and work, and watch food stamps disappear if they DO work, they’re watching this Palin woman say “hey, you can do it all, look great, have a powerful politician ogle your ass, run a state, run a household, work full time, and always be where you need to be and look good getting there. Oh and if you’re like me, you’ll have a hubby whose issue with drink is not a problem.”
I’m tellin you they are all, all those moms who are single OR who have to work full time, they are gonna despise this woman the more they see of her. It’s not about the public judging whether a woman can actually fulfill all these roles at once and well at that. It’s about her rubbing everyone’s nose in it, in their own frustration with how HARD it is to work and be a good mom, especially if you’re single and have no help. The more the repugs insist she’s a fab momma, the more women out there will intuitively know they are WRONG. Her wayward daughter is just the tip of the iceberg.
Cant wait for Oprah to weigh in on this. If she’s got the cajones. She do love her some Obama.
Sam Brownback said on NPR today the Palin pick was “a huge hit” at the convention and with his people, his constits.
I keep hearing those light little singers from the Wizard of oz, that outta the woods tune. Weird. Surreal down their on the convention floor. Munchkins all.
Thought that was Larry King!
Jeebus, Hillary, who knew?
Palin Bandwagon!
Crats go Bing Badda Boom.
When the tabloids hit the supermarket stands with her face and scandals all over them….it will get interesting…Nat. Enq. has one coming out as well as US.
Isn’t “killing country first” the Rethug’s idea of foreplay?
OT
don’t be wasting your time looking for any insight on the NewsHour on Palin as VP
it’s Gwen Ifill with
Heather Wilson (R-AZ)
and
Mary Fallon (R-NM)
Yup, the one criticism I have heard is the appearance that while she is off on some ego power trip she is ceding the rearing of her kids to nannies and the like. Or that she should have been there for her daughter while she was dating this hoodlum that she is being forced to marry. As well, many have said she should not have subjected her daughter to this, knowing it would come out. But the rumor is that Palin was arranging for a wedding BEFORE the announcement.
TwinpeaksNikkiSF: That’s crazy, progressive women, by and large, don’t feel that way
Maybe they were progressive men, but I’ve see a few such comments.
Blug: Frankly I would just tell the truth about her..
Exactly.
Blue Texan: I’ve always found Michelle Bernard a vapid repository of the Conventional Wisdom.
That’s it.
TwinpeaksNikkiSF: She IS a conservative! Big time.
Oh.
McCain’s got a Palin problem & a pushy Prez raining on his convention. I wonder if he will be able to keep a lid on his temper. He generally hasn’t lost it in public but he sure seems to have made a rep for himself over the years. A presidential campaign is a much more of a pressure cooker & he has had to kowtow to various sects of the R party. He can’t be a happy ‘maverick’ these days.
OT Obama just received a top level security briefing from the highest level officials. Biden, McShame, and PALIN will also receive these briefings. PALIN receiving these briefings should be very scary, very very scary.
Bush is said to be dismissive of McCain’s pick of Palin, according to the sources. Ironically, he is said to believe that now he will bear no responsibility if McCain loses. The old rivalry, supposedly buried, has come back to life.
As if. Lest we forget, we are dealing with two men with the mentalities of two adolesent boys.
No it was John King
!
Doesn’t she get her briefings directly from God?
This theory is endorsed by Max Blumenthal of the Nation. He espouses it on Amy Goodman’s post-RNC-arrest show at http://www.DemocracyNow.org
That is scary too very very scary scary.
Oh! Isn’t this fun!
But, the press needs McFucker, and he, them.
BTW, aren’t there laws in most places against shitting in public?
{Reality these days is degrading my wonted formal diction ;-)}
“Serving A Cause Greater Than Self.”
I almost burst out laughing when I read that. Republicans?
Oh, wait. “Cause greater than self.” I guess pledging your allegiance to the emergent White Anglo-Saxon Christo-fascist state would qualify, wouldn’t it?

I don’t understand the logic, as Noron just said, that Giuliani got “bumped” from his speech to allow for Fred Thompson to “punch Obama in the face”…
My guess…Ghouliani got bumped because he’s not evangelical like Thompson. If you wanted to have somebody get smart and tough via language, surely you would leave Ghouliani in that spot.
Hmmm.
Oh well McShame won’t remember when he gets to his straight shit express.
The Twin Cities main airport is named after Lindbergh. This has long offended many of us here.
yes, scary for Palin to get top security briefing, specially as she is, as cindi mccain told us, right next to russia up there in alaska.

Never misunderestimate the intelligence of the American voting public, however. Many have written that people vote for the candidate that makes ‘em feel all warm and fuzzy inside. That’s what Rove is banking on-and why they’ll keep Palin on the ticket.
Until, of course, the National Enquirer finds those nude pictures taken one very drunk college night…
Frank Gaffney: Sarah Palin Learned National Security “By Osmosis”

crikey, you just can’t make this stuff up.
”…Ms. Palin, who has almost no foreign policy experience…”
I wasn’t aware that she had any…
I saw Big Fred defend Slewfoot Sarah the other night, there was a real creepy sexual subtext to it. Yuk!
thanks Bob, sorry about the goof

oh please, give me the money now – :D
VALUES . . . Live The Fantasy !
Motto: Country First
Palin would say Alaska
Lieberman would say Israel
McCain would say anywhere Cindy moves
Yeah, they had to change the motto
Ha something else in common w/ McShame forget to pay taxes.
Sarah Palin, being pro-life, may have influenced daughter Bristol to consider that it would not be illegal (at this time) to abort the fetus of the 18-year-old ass-kicking hockey puck. That would make sense, because the McCain camp indicates that a choice was made by Bristol “on her own” to keep the baby.
Even James Dobson says that he is happy that a decision was made to keep the baby.
Hypocrites.
Remember the tabloid crowd is the Republican base.
Here’s a TPM article along those lines, but citing Larry King:
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/
It’s on the front page at 4:31PM. Title is “Can’t Stand the Heat.”
Let’s not go there. It reminds me of a great movie with Joan Allen called The Contender.
Been watching Newshour on and off while starting dinner.
I seriously don’t know how Bobo can keep spouting the party line from night to night without his head exploding. I just don’t know how he does it.
Palin Foreign Policy Experience: May have had negotiations with undocumented nannies.
Although I despise Carville, I would like to see him make that point (something like “we commend the Palins’ pro-choice position”) on the Sunday morning teevee shows.
We watched that on Sunday night with Scarecrow. Quite a performance Allen put in. And principled character. Not like . . .
and what if they weren’t in any big hurry to fill those forms out because of
labor irregularities ?!?!?
I want them to define “greater than self”…Serve God? Serve Government? Serve spaghetti? WTF?
You can’t act outside of your “self”…otherwise “you” don’t exist. Period.
It is impossible to be “selfless”….unless you are a drone or a robot or a zombie.
Oh yeah…that’s what they want. McCain would love to reinstate the draft. Besides…isn’t his bragging about his service, etc., so incredibly narcisstic in the first place? He’a a braggart. That is so “selfish”. Geesh.
Serving A Cause Greater Than Thinning Hair, You C**t!
Can’t get on TPM I heard Wolf say John KIng oh well a king is a king *g*
OT CNN just reported Amy Goodman and producers arrest – tried to get info from city but they were mum
Yep, great movie.
MSNBC: Rachel said “pushing Ghouliani out of the keynote spot is a big deal.”
Anybody know:
1) Why they said they did it?
2) Why they really did it?
I believe, but I could be wrong, that Palin’s words were “have the baby”..not “keep” the baby. Big difference there.
Serving A Cause Greater Than Spreading Makeup On With A Trowel Like A Trollop, You C**t!
OMG-Palin learned national security by osmosis! What next? Fairies whispered in her ear? I can’t take much more of this lunacy. Reality-based americans deserve hazard pay for the mental distress we’ve had to endure listening to this garbage for 8 years.
Keith O. reports that the kid who knocked up Bristol Palin will be attending the Convention tomorrow.
The Ghoul don’t ring true with the x-tian fundies. McCain has gone All-In for the Fundy Vote.

A Hasty, Misguided Decision
After all the slanders questioning Sen and Mrs. Obama’s patriotism, the Republican VP pick actually was part of an organization that DIDN’T WANT to be American citizens any longer.
It just boggles the mind…
they sort of had to give her at least one briefing so that she would have some foreign policy experience…
I don’t know I wasn’t there

Not calling you out; I want to follow this.

There has been discussion here about the statutory rape implications.
This is a very Western notion. Those exposed to many Eastern spiritual traditions do not hold to this.
Sri Ramana Maharshi, a deeply revered teacher, asks “Who am I”, and it is an infinite regress. Try it out and see where you get!
cleanth (if you’re still about) – (also took reply upstairs)
Jumping in without reading latest comments and someone may already have answered your question
fromdownstairs. Per cnn a little while ago, Obama received secret briefings from the pentagon earlier today. This from the female who covers the P. She went on to say that the other three candidates would receive similar briefings. And……talked about how mccain, BO and Biden have top security clearances because of their committee activities BUT palin had NO such clearances but would be briefed anyway.Whee! How’s that for national security?
“Serving A Cause Greater Than Self” – does this strike anyone else other than me as redolent of – really, reeking of – an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend’s passive-aggressive reference to their former lover?
Even the other themes, they’ve got a bitchy, defensive quality about them that really is quite striking.
It helps if you live in a bubble.
Bob in HI
I thought among the pro-lifers they didn’t even believe a decision COULD be made, that it was automatically ‘keep the baby’. Oh well, could be a mistranslation from gooper talk.
This isn’t new. They’ve been doing it this way for decades. We wouldn’t want a nominee to be saying ridiculous foreign policy things, now would we.
“Serving a cause greater than self” That was the temporary theme just for milking Hurricane Gustaf.
Soon it’ll be back to “Country First”. It’s so much catchier and fits well on a bumper sticker.
