Ironic given it was Minneapolis where a bridge fell because Republicans REFUSED to fix it.

You mean, Republicans don’t take care of people? What part of outsourcing and off-shoring jobs with tax breaks for Multinational Robber Barons does not take care of people?

Republicans say it’s Free Enterprise for some people to lose their homes (mortgage crisis) and retirement funds (1980s debacles and Enron) and everyday cash (high gasoline prices).

Disasters are always ameliorated or exacerbated by politics. Because of Katrina the Republicans HAD TO look interested and involved in a “mirror-image” situation on the eve of McCain’s coronation as the GOP nominee. But they utterly failed to demonstrate interest when it failed to serve their short term political interests. Thus the structural preparations for a hurricane in NO and the emergency relief by FEMA were run by incompetant cronies and a disnterested WH.

And the standard Republican mantra afterwards was “This is a local problem. The Federal Government should NOT be involved. It’s Nagin’s and Blanco’s fault.”

FACT: The Federal government almost completely funded the reconstruction after the 1964 Alaska Earthquake and provided hundreds of millions more to develop studies on how to ameliorate the effects of earthquakes. Does Palin think that States should not receive Federal assistance in disasters? That it is simply a “local matter”?
