While the corporate media mindlessly peddle the spin that Republican Convention has thus far been some kind of non-partisan "Country First" fest, Goopers are happily going about their partisan business. Before the storm even hit, Norm Coleman went on national television and said that hurricanes are a reason to vote McSame.
Republicans are already citing Hurricane Gustav as a major reason why voters should pick Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) this fall.
Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) made the case Sunday that McCain is best equipped to lead the country — whether it’s acts of terrorism or acts of God.
Then Time reported that the GOP saw Gustav as an opportunity to "rebrand" the GOP.
John McCain can’t stop the storm, but his campaign is determined to make the most of it by using it to rebrand a new generation of Republicans as leaders who govern effectively and rise above partisanship.
Using a national emergency to rebrand your party — how Country Firstian!
And finally, my very own Governor Goodhair delivered these totally non-partisan remarks in video for the wingers at the convention (HuffPo has video).
"You’re seeing Republican governors in Republican states doing a fabulous job of taking care of the citizens," Perry said. "That’s what we do."
Uh, yeah, Rick. That’s what you do.

C’mon, BT, they were only promising not to politicize it when it looked like New Orleans was going to be completely under water again. That was just going to highlight their incompetence. Now, they are going to claim how competent they were in getting everyone out. They have two problems in doing this:
1) If they could evacuate everyone this time, why the hell didn’t they do it in 2005?
2) I think they are going to royally screw up getting everyone back home.
2a)I’m not completely convinced that we are passed the danger time for levees failing.
I think this AP headline says it all about the delegates yesterday:
With no speeches, delegates focus on buttons
Do they have their priorities straight, or what?
“John McCain can’t stop the storm, but his campaign is determined to make the most of it”
These guys are clever. The implication in this use of words is that Mccain CAN and DID stop the storm.
the only dem that’s that quick on the draw is obama, thank dog.
meaning i wish MORE dems were that quick, but thannk dog obama is. hopefully that’ll win the day
If the american people could just get hip to this ONE thing — that the repubs ALWAYS mean exactly the opposite of what they say. It’s a classic MO in public speech for authoritarians. wouldn’t mr orwell agree?
The implication in this use of words is that Mccain CAN and DID stop the storm.
Ha. I just had a weird mental image of McCain in a Moses robe and holding up the Moses rod standing on top of a spilling over levee, arms up, calming the storm.
I don’t see it. He’s way too old to be Moses.
as the french say – exactement
That was each other’s belly buttons, right?
You mean, Republicans don’t take care of people? What part of outsourcing and off-shoring jobs with tax breaks for Multinational Robber Barons does not take care of people? Republicans are Up With People! They always have been. And I want to thank Dubya fer his leedersheep on this here last hurricane thingy.
The Republicans contemplate their navels as they enjoy the sonic stylings of Hookers and Blow!
Now where’s them Family Values Hookers and Blow!
Can someone tell me where in the lower 48 where Republican governors aren’t dealing with major economic crises? Why not talk about the crisis Enron and other Bush contributors did to California’s Economy and how Ahnold can’t get the Pubs to help solve the problem by a little more corporate taxation.
Alaska is not like the lower 48…and the State Constitution requires that oil companies are taxed and pay substantial amounts on the leases on State lands. 80% of the State budget comes from taxes and lease payments on oil and gas extraction. The Republican “corruptors” (Stevens and his cronies) in Alaska reduced that burden on the oil industry somewhat.
But just what Republican is saying that the corporations should be paying 80% of our Federal taxes.
To pay for “no tuition” universities (for residents), no personal income tax, no sales tax? And creating “surplus” investment funds (aka Social Security) that pays back residuals to the residents? And Palin was just pushed to institute an even higher “Excess Profits Tax” because the oil ndustry has been making billions in additional profits from the increase in gas prices.
Sounds a bit more like “Socialism” Norwegian Style. But not like
LOL!
Maybe Palin will be reduced shortly to a
tropicaltopical storm:http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpoi…..moff_t.php
Oops! I implied above that Ahhhnold was in favor of more “Alaska-style” corporate taxation. In fact he’s in favor of a regressive sales tax, increasing college tuitions, and cutting student aid, hospital services, aid to the handicapped and poor, services at State parks, etc.
It’s the State legislature that is in favor of the wealthy and big corporations paying their fair share…like Alaska does.
Of course, those taxes are enshrined in Alaska’s Constitution…so it’s hard for those Republicans under the thumb of the corporations to remove it.
a better translation perhaps? no charge ;-)
RNC delegate: We already do a lot for the people of New Orleans…

Excrément is a french word, and somehow, it fits McCain.
Southern Dragon,
For some reason, I’ve been thinking about you while reading the book I’m into now.
The Tenth Insight.
Gov Perry, not an ounce of embarrassment in that man. I so miss Molly Ivins. She would have rubbed her hands in glee before she sat down to write a lethal response to that idiot.
Yeah, they take care of unfortunate young women by helping them pay bills and fulfill their “mothering”instincts.
By appointment only of course.
OT: Pretty interesting article by Nido Pitney and Sam Stein at huffpo titled, “Palin’s Church May Have Shaped Controversial Worldview.” The pastor makes Jeremiah Wright look pretty tame by comparison. The Iraq War was God’s will, John Kerry is damned to Hell and maybe the people who voted for him. Oh, and Sarah herself made a pitch that God favors a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state.
Andrea interviewing someone right now at the Convention who is saying that instead of the theme of the Convention being “maverick”…it’s now starting to be “teen pregnancy”, and that top Repub “pros” are getting really worried…
Heh.
Sorry, that should be NICO Pitney.
I’m more of a bumbling wanderer of other dimensions. Get lost a lot, too.
Much appreciation for the education (non-francophone), It fitted
I shall treasure (and remember) Excrément henceforth ;-)
I think the funniest thing is that Palin supports AIP who want Alaska to become its own country.
So much for “Country First”…McCain chooses someone who doesn’t even want to remain a citizen of the United States of America…
Jeebus.
Reminds me of that old Steve Martin line: “Yeah, I’ve been doing some charity work…helping young mothers get their start…(audience groans)….WHAT?!”
Oh, the Humor! Oh the Humanity! Oh the Hubris! of these people.
A suggestion: Never stand too close to these people at anytime, when lightning strikes, it might get you ALL.
new post from Christy
Well, that looks like the prez may be attempting a G chord, but his fingers are at the wrong frets. No wonder the lady is crying. She’s prolly got more than one reason.

Disasters are always ameliorated or exacerbated by politics. Because of Katrina the Republicans HAD TO look interested and involved in a “mirror-image” situation on the eve of McCain’s coronation as the GOP nominee. But they utterly failed to demonstrate interest when it failed to serve their short term political interests. Thus the structural preparations for a hurricane in NO and the emergency relief by FEMA were run by incompetant cronies and a disnterested WH.
And the standard Republican mantra afterwards was “This is a local problem. The Federal Government should NOT be involved. It’s Nagin’s and Blanco’s fault.”
FACT: The Federal government almost completely funded the reconstruction after the 1964 Alaska Earthquake and provided hundreds of millions more to develop studies on how to ameliorate the effects of earthquakes. Does Palin think that States should not receive Federal assistance in disasters? That it is simply a “local matter”?
Suzanne has her very own daylight post upstairs
Oh, honey, there’s other dimensions there too.
It’s very new agey weirdy, but I’m looking at what the author is proposing with an eye to learning Something.
Don’t know why I thought of you, but I did. What can I say?
No way your getting lost is more than my getting lost. Ha!
I’m a poor little sheep
That has gone astray…
bah, bah, bah.
What did the doc say about your eyes, btw? good news?
— Blue Texan
Ironic given it was Minneapolis where a bridge fell because Republicans REFUSED to fix it.
Republicans say it’s Free Enterprise for some people to lose their homes (mortgage crisis) and retirement funds (1980s debacles and Enron) and everyday cash (high gasoline prices).
Got money?
