You're all familiar with the concept of the Overton Window, wherein previously unthinkable ideas can gradually become acceptable, even "sensible"? Well, it looks like that very same phenomenon is happening with the previously unthinkable idea of a presidential candidate scrapping his running mate for the first time since 1972 - and we all know how well that turned out.
As her National Enquirer clown car candidacy rolls on, geysering hot fresh scandals left right and right, speculation about when her new "partner and soulmate" might decide to go in a different direction has been abundant. But instead of being limited to the fever swamps of the liberal blogosphere like all those George W. Bush scandals that we just knew would result in his impeachment or electoral defeat, the Sarah Palin deathwatch has gone mainstream.
The New York Times asked about it:
Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina said that he had heard no discussion about removing Ms. Palin from the ticket.
The LA Times talked about it:
One Republican strategist with close ties to the campaign described the candidate's closest supporters as "keeping their fingers crossed" in hopes that additional information does not force McCain to revisit the decision....
(...)
For McCain, the Friday surprise of introducing Palin resulted in a weekend of buzz and anticipation. But if additional surprises surface about Palin, McCain could face stark choices.
Might he be forced to anger conservatives by dumping Palin? Could he risk an admission of poor judgment, tainting what he has long claimed as a key strength?
US Magazine is polling on it (bottom of the main page if you'd like to cast your own vote).
Hell, even Perez Hilton is in on the action:
John McCain might want to sue his Vice Presidential vetting team!
The crazy shiz people are digging up on Sarah Palin is never ending!
(...)
Should McCain dump Palin?????
What do U think????
Granted, he's not exactly mainstream media, but my point is that the possibility is leaking into popular culture - it's not just a dirty hippie wet dream.
Personally, I agree with Glenn Smith that McCain won't dare dump Palin, no matter how bad the scandals get, but the fact that people are even thinking about this is absolutely devastating to his campaign. Instead of the usual discussion of a running mate's political pros and cons, we've got a discussion about whether McCain was so reckless, sloppy, and beholden to the religious right that he chose someone completely unsuitable, and whether he's too stubborn and cowardly to admit his mistake.
But whichever choice he makes, he's already lost.

Eli!
Eli!
how original of me….
Riesz! Jayt!
As her National Enquirer clown car candidacy rolls on, geysering hot fresh scandals
Oh my. Is Mary Mac around?
Eli, the words “clown car” have taken on a new meaning, maybe even a life of their own, here at the Lake.
I’m gonna let somebody else explain it though - preferably a *female*. *g*
Hi Eli, sorry I’m EPU’ing this picture I’ve been trying to post all day. Yeoman Smith/Cindy McCain
http://images1.wikia.nocookie....../ed/Smith_(Yeoman).jpg/76px-Smith_(Yeoman).jpg
does Mrs. Palin remind anybody else of a hyperactive real-estate salesman?
I wasn’t familiar with the term “Overton window” but we’ve been discussing for a long time the concept of mainstreaming radical ideas. Why have we been unable to respond in kind on the left? Even in these “best of times” for progressives we’ve been conned into nominating a centrist.
Hey Eli
The 10 Million Dollar Pick, my bold.
John McCain, aided by Sarah Palin, reports an August cash haul
10 million, 3 day holiday weekend, sounds like a deal when down to me.
Lincoln tribute, wasn’t he against secession?
I don’t see it happening. Pastordan said it this morning:
my bold. I think the shoe fits.
Exactly, sort of a bully and someone who is never wrong. Scary.
Yeah, like the mom in American Beauty???
Babs Bush, how can anyone look at her and NOT think of her Superdome comment?
I think corporate money has a lot to do with that, actually…
That and being the mother of W will be her legacy. Karma is a biatch…
Hey Eli!
Great to meet you at DL a couple of weeks ago.
Yeah, I think McCain *only* dumps Palin if Dobson et al. give him express permission.
Likewise, RevDeb!
Eli, I prostrate myself in awe! This is the perfect description…
Good analogy. Anyway, Dobson and crew could care less if she an utterly corrupt and sleazy specimen, as long as she talks the talk.
Actually, Dobson himself would have to go out front on that one I think. Otherwise the flock won’t buy it.
…Which would only conceivably happen if Bristol got an abortion.
She’s payment for his support. The Godfather has called in his favor. McCain can’t say no.
It would be great for Ds if McCane would dump Palin, but it’s not gonna happen. And the Ds better get their act together if they expect to defeat her. She’s a bulldog who will trash all & sundry. Straight out of Karl Rove’s play book. DO NOT MISUNDERESTIMATE HER.
In which case her Bristol’s mom would kill her.
It’s still not working… (tried to see it downstairs too…)
Good evening firepups. Howdy Eli. Sorta on topic, SnarKassandra is blogging again. This time on teen pregnancy, birth control, sex ed, & Bristol Palin. Dear Governor Palin
but a miscarriage—that would be another story entirely.
Oh well. Obama wanted this story taken off the table. Well and good, but the story in the WaPo about Sister Sarah using her line item veto to nix out a home for unwed mothers, in my opinion puts it back on the table.
Sooooo kewl. Ds are whowhoing W pere.
Because the McCainStream Media is owned lock, stock, barrel and soul by Republicans.
Hey, check out the latest AP run down on Palin. Even they are listing all of the negatives. And if they are, the ax can’t be far behind. . .
“Should McCain dump Palin?”
No way! She’s way too much fun!
She may have skills, but her baggage is simply unbelievable. As is the fact that McCain either missed it, or viewed it as unimportant.
McSame sealed his fate when he made such a reckless choice,he’s toast.
What the F*** was he thinking?
In which case her Bristol’s mom would kill her.
Sometimes that “sacred duty” thing sooo sucks….
Ooo, Fournier’s not gonna like that…
Let McCain be McCain-crazy as a moon bat. This is a neo-con campaign and Sarah is his neo-con sexy soulmate. He might be nuts, but he sees something in Sarah…she is a keeper!
Perhaps I should have said, “missed it or dismissed it”…
Absolutely, and for sure pay attention to this. They may let her fail this time, but like some zombie she’ll keep coming back and back and back and back… As a ghastly example I’ll offer Little Donny Rumsfeld…
And all of this having to kow-tow is pissing him off royally. What do they think he’ll do if he’s elected? Listen to these piss ants? No. He’ll put sweet Sarah in a room somewhere and listen to Liebermann and Graham.
This is not a man who turns the other cheek.
Google “yeoman Smith”…look for picture in orangish suit at podium….her hair’s down, but the Star Trek look is all there.
LOL And I thought Hillary had too much baggage. Palin is a Samsonite factory.
That’s Just What I Said
“What the F*** was
heI thinking?”There. New campaign slogan.
She’s more of a theocon, really. The neocons wanted Joe.
‘Sokay, tho - McCain is neoconny enough for the both of ‘em.
Anyone watching the convention think it lacks energy?
I so agree. She’s Danger, danger, danger…
Baggage don’t mean nuthin’ to the Pukes. Look at what they’re getting away with in the Cheney junta. The more we attack her the more they will rally around her.
Remember the first principle of American politics: IOKAYAR.
Heh, heh… The staring at her butt while twiddling with the wedding ring is SOOO special!
Digg
Why is Tweety allowing Repugs to claim that Palin fought corruption?
Listen to democracynow this morning about how Max Blumenthal found out that a secret meeting of Dobson & his ilk luv Palin. Couple that revelation with the fact that Ds must attack women in order to attack Palin. It’s a devishly clever selection. And Ds who dismiss such a powerhouse will rue the day.
One difference between ‘72 and the present, Eagleton dropped out because of a single revelation that he had undergone psychiatric treatment. Palin’s candidacy appears to open an entire Book of Revelations.
And the clumsily advancing on her while she edges nervously away. I look forward to more displays of their fantastic running-mate chemistry.
from Charlie at BlueMassGroup:
The last thing the dems need to do is be stupid about this.
Hey, LS, why is it that progressives are too distracted to see the danger?
Don’t bother answering. We know the Ds are too dumb to live. Darwin awards all around.
I just HAVE to do this OT…… just saw a commercial FOR High Fructose Corn Syrup…. blah blah ….its made of corn, its pure, NOT that there are a ton of health issues linked to it…… the clueless woman who is pointing out the punch is full of it…… cannot give one reason why NOT to consume it…..
Now back to your regular programming….
The beauty of this is that most of this is actually coming from the media - all we’re doing is pointing at it.
nice ass as he twirled his wedding ring
Elliot Spitzer asked more questions prior to choosing Ashley Dupree.
There is plenty of energy outside. CNN covering protest.
Did Ds have all this vibrato (sp?) violin stuff? Did I miss it? When (not in my lifetime I spose) will public react to background music with visceral disbelief like I do?
Okay. I’m pretty much out of here. Every time I try to comment replying to a previous comment I get the “debug” lines of crap. And last night the site was entirely down. It’s getting more than a little tiresome.
because he’s a tool.
This has been another edition of simple answers to simple questions.
I haven’t seen any indication that the Dems are mishandling this. I think Obama was right on the mark about families. He’s very smart and so is his campaign and I don’t think they will go nuts over this.
I have a couple of pints of corn syrup in my pantry, bought in excess to make gigantic bubbles. Looking for a reason to use it up. Best suggestion to date is pecan pie recipe.
Explain to us the danger. The danger is if she gets elected — the American people may be stupid but not that stupid.
Anyone watching the convention think it lacks energy?,/i>
I’ve got it muted. I’m gonna wait just long enough to listen to check out the applause, or lack of same, when president Georgie is introduced, and that’ll be it for the night for me, I think.
Hey, Marion. Don’t go away mad. Don’t even go away. I think it’s growing pains.
Doncha love it? NOBODY can see a picture of a casket or a body bag or a funeral until they can be used as a political backdrop. [vomit]
Exactly, Biden praised her today. They will let her hang herself.
I’m doubtful that the senator is still capable of McCoitus even if the Secret Service was lending a hand.
Is Joe Lieberman planning to honor Patrick Tillman tonight?
eCahn, there is also, I think, a good bit of old fashioned snobbery among Democrats - it’s back to the John Kerry “We’re too good to get into this sort of discussion” sort of stuff. We all see ourselves as (pick whatever suits) too well bred, too smart, too educated, etc. To a lot of Democrats, Sarah Palin is a joke, and as we know from our rather poor experience with George Bush and Dick Cheney, not taking people like this as serious threats is a big mistake.
Orson Swindle now that’s a name born to be a gooper.
corn syrup is very different from the High Fructose corn syrup….. the HFCS is a byproduct from ethanol production.
eCAHNomics @69, I’ve just given up on trying to reply to folks other than this way… Stay away? You’ve GOTTA be kidding! (Any new preserves in the offing for brunch? [small drool])
that’s not how the scenario
evolvesis inteligently designedit
evolvesis inteligently designed like so;[palin] “my daughters life is not going to be up for public grabs, and her life has become too much a distraction and might hurt our great leader’s chance for election, I have to rescind my acceptance, though nominated I will not serve, heck, I don’t even want to be an american, how can I want to be vice president”
there
Is Joe Lieberman planning to honor Patrick Tillman tonight?
oh lord - don’t bring that up. You know how Joe’s always running off to start new Congressional investigations.
His staff is exhausted.
Yup, we are elitists. Check back on Nov 5th
She’s a bulldog. Grabs ahold of the neck, shakes it relentlessly until prey is dead. Sarah Barracuda. Ds, like your mention of Obama’s reaction, are powerless to respond in kind. If you attack, the female base of the D party is pissed off. If you don’t attack (BO), you are weak. How much more danger is there than that? Rs have cornered Ds with Palin selection.
i believe hojo is planning on honoring himself
ROTFLMAO
I think a lot of it goes to the Obama Campaign asking all the 527’s to go away…. They really need them…..they need somebody to be the bad guy and let them hammer away at McBush/Failin
D is for Change!
Ha! LOL. Is that the baffoon up now?
Palin’s nomination and implosion is the last straw for the corporatocracy. Those guys that skim the tens of millions (sometimes hundreds) off the bottom line of their shareholders get paid big money not to back losing horses. They will pull their support from McSame, and put their cash on Obama, hoping that they can get him into DLC mode. Obama will play them for what it’s worth. Without a viable threat from the Pukes, the corporatocracy has nothing except assassination to threaten him with.
Social pressure will maintain the exec contributions to the thugs, so McSame won’t be down too far. But the back room stuff will be strongly against him. One thing these guys can’t stand is a loser, and he is making out to be one big time.
Remember how a little while ago–oh, yeah, it was YESTERDAY–they were saying that they announced Bristol’s pregnancy because of mean rumors being posted on liberal blogs? Turns out, not so much. The Enquirer was about to publish:
http://www.nationalenquirer.co.....rity/65370
Duncan’s dancing fingers find the gems before anyone else:
You can poo poo the Enquirer, but their staff of lawyers is probably bigger than their editorial staff. They don’t go there unless there’s a there to go to.
It doesn’t matter how it would go down… it’s just not going to. Even if she falls on her sword, everyone will still recognize that she was forced out.
The Overton Window is in use right now with the complex issues surrounding the Unitary Executive. The Republicans have pushed the window so far that if, under Obama, we can succeed in moving it half-way back, we’ll all heave a sigh of relief, pat each other on the back, and leave the window there– halfway down the track towards Fascism.
Part of the trick with the Overton Window is that we become so used to all the manifold changes that we forget the Way Things Used to Be, when Congress defended the Constitution, the Courts upheld it, and the Executive didn’t challenge it. We forget how Government looked and acted.
Now if we can undo half of the dents in the Constitution, we’ll look at the remaining dented wreck, and marvel at how much better it looks, accepting the dented wreck as the epitome of the Original Intent.
I hope Obama is Man enough to know how important it is to roll all of that back, even if he loses power in the process.
Bob in HI
You betcha. Snobbery has its downside, even (especially?)when it’s our downside.
Sarah Barracuda got her nickname because she was a catty bitch in high school.Welcome to the reality based community.
Recipes that use corn syrup? Here are about a bazillion…!
Hey Suz, got to see your take on the police action today. Thanks.
Well, I think Americans, not necessarily progressives, but Americans fall for the nationalistic flag waving, POW whistle call, America is a white country, etc., etc., just watch what is happening as I write this…USA, USA, USA…
People can’t stand negativity. They respond to “belonging” to a mass identity…The Repubs are masters at it. They hang together. They keep it simple stupid (KISS).
Progressives have allowed themselves to be painted by them as always fighting the American Dream…they have allowed themselves to be constantly demonized.
Obama may have cracked their hold on society because the country is hurting…
We shall see.
Palin has charisma, and she knows how to ramp up the energy. She is dangerous to progressives. Unless she gets axed, which I doubt will happen but could, the real race will be between Obama and Palin. Americans are addicted to this stuff. Just my two cents.
Laura Shrub is proud of the ‘exciting’ Repug ticket…! Hello…?
Aloha ya’ll!
How does she compare to Hillary? Obama managed to beat her.
Don’t insult me. Spend your time more productively by thinking about how the uninformed voter reacts.
They seem to have gotten Laura’s meds well balanced this evening, and they’ve trained her when to do whatever it is that she does that the rest of us call “smile.” What she does is something ENTIRELY different… It’s not quite a rictus, but I don’t have a term for it.
wow
I bet she’s voting for obama, I BET she IS
How can a person who aligns herself with a secessionist movement claim to be a patriot.
that was still a polite fight for the sake of eventual party unity. The gloves never really came off though the corpo media tried to pull them off the candidates.
You’d be right if it were only her daughter that was the problem, but it’s a lot more than that. Her attempting to can the municipal librarian because the librarian objected to banning books (already purchased) because they contained words that Ms Palin considered to be bad; her enthusiastic membership in the Alaska Independence Party; some shady business with respect to ear-marks, and her presence on Stevens’ criminal 527. There’s enough there, and more to bring her down. She might be tough (and we don’t know that she is because she hasn’t been tested), but she hasn’t been on prime time.
She is a good respresentative of what the Republican Party has become. In that respect she’s a good pick. Hard to see any other upsides.
my pleasure loohoo and thank you
I guess that depends on when her next birthday is.
Whooie. Just warm-ups so far. I was wondering why we hadn’t heard anything from the trooper.
Obama v Hillary was in a narrow sense a fair fight. (Don’t want to go there tonight, so don’t press me.) Palin v Obama is an entirely different subject. Lots of dog whistles, things going on behind scenes, long history of religious nuts controlling national agenda. Do not underestimate.
BTW, listen to Mrs. W, if you think I’m an alarmist.
so what does Levi have to say about getting hitched? Somehow that doesn’t seemed to be taken into consideration……
I also think that now that the far right wing/theocon side of things is just all vibrating because they have one of their own … they probably actually are counting on McCain buying the farm…the sooner after the swearing in, the better. Before Palin was chosen, I think a lot of them were willing to sit this one out; NOW, forget it…Dobson and Co. will fire up the engine for Sarah. John-b0y is an afterthought.
Snort! It’s not just the kid. Sarah’s mother-in-law doesn’t understand why she was chosen either! In Alaska wrangling the family seems to be harder than in the lower 48….
siun has a report from the streets of st paul upstairs
