The way I see it, Palin’s “family values” talk is a valid topic of discussion because of the wide difference between what she wants to claim for herself, and what she wants to control in everyone else.

The existence of that difference is evidence that her political positions are failures.

She wants abstinence to be the ONLY sex education taught anywhere. That her own daughter turns up pregnant as a minor is evidence that that position is a failure.

She is loudly against any American woman or girl having “privacy” or “choice” in their reproductive life; she wants the State to enforce laws against the protection of such “privacy” and the exercise of such “choice.” Yet she wants “privacy” maintained around her daughter’s “choice” to bear a child.

In other words, State enforcement of sexual ignorance and reproduction is for OTHER PEOPLE — not for Sarah Palin and the Palin blood kin!

I do believe that can be called Abuse of Power.

It is a political topic.

The more I think about it, the more I think McCain’s got a crush on Palin. Both of his wives were beauty contestants and now his choice for VP too?! Still I’m thankful at the spectacular implosion the republicans are treating us to!

This is from someone in Alaska who says to spread the word:

“Palin has spent millions of Alaska state dollars on aerial hunting of
predators from helicopters and airplanes, dollars that should have been spent, for example, on Alaska’s failing school system. We have the lowest rate of high school graduation in the country.

Prior to her one year as governor of Alaska, she was mayor of Wasilla, a small red neck town outside Anchorage. The average maximum education level of parents of junior high school kids in Wasilla is 10th grade. These people don’t have a concept of the world around them or of the
serious issues facing the US. Furthermore, they don’t care. So long
as they can go out and hunt their moose every fall, kill wolves and
bears and drive their snow mobiles and ATVs through every corner of the
wilderness, they’re happy. I wish I were exaggerating.”

Perhaps the education situation in Alaska should see a little more daylight, in terms of vetting.

The issues and reality mean nothing. It’s all about image and perception, smoke and mirrors. The Republicans are the masters in pulling the strings of the corporate media and the public, by and large, dance the Howdy Dowdy to the Republican snake charmers.

No idea what McCain was thinking…except that he clearly wasn’t bothering to think at all.

Oh, we all know what part of his anatomy McCain uses to do his “thinking.”

Palin’s position on abortion, whether for herself or her daughter (if you notice, all the right wing is saying that Bristol “chose” to keep her child) is a viable topic as she is showing a choice for her and her family that she would deny to others.

Her pushing of “abstinence only” education while her child is getting pregnant at 17 is a viable topic.

Using innuendo about how her doctor that delivered her Downs Syndrome son to imply that the son was actually her daughter’s because the doctor treats sexual abuse and rape victims (amongst other patients) is NOT a viable topic.

I thought you would be able to fully understand the difference.

You seem to be missing the point here.

Christy (and myself and others) are not trying to impede the conversation. What is being attempted is to assure that folks are bringing verifiable information to the conversation and not just using nothing but innuendo to smear someone.

Plunger has for days now been using the fact that Palin’s doctor counsels sexual abuse and rape victims to imply that Bristol was the actual mother of Trig and that’s why this doctor was used.. No proof to this so it is nothing but innuendo and conjecture. That is a Republican/Rovian level smear, not conversation.

Or do you think we should resort to those level of tactics?

Let me reiterate my bigger point, aside from the worth of plunger’s innuendo. Among the big stories in this pick is the issue of abortion, an illustration of what the practical consequences of a ban on abortion, and curtailment of access to contraception would be. Yet that’s the one issue that won’t be directly addressed by Democrats. Again, I understand the reasons, but just thought I’d note it.

You sound like the Republicans here, where conversations between commenters on a blog amount to a “smear” they can pin on the party most here support. Don’t let them spook you.

Palin, an elected official, hid her pregnancy. She was within her rights to do so, but I’m not going to be a bit curious why, especially when she makes everyone else’s pregnancies her business? Come on, I’m human.

If CHS doesn’t want it discussed, that makes sense. It’s just that I think she’s overly sensitive to the reach of the Republican campaign at the expense of the free-for-all nature of a comment thread. That’s the last I’ll opine on it: Democrats thankfully have the luxury of being able to completely ignore the family freakshow aspect of Palin.
