New revelations are crawling out of the tundra at every turn.
Thus far, we’ve discovered Sarah "Reform" Palin is actually L’il Miss Pork, having hired folks with deep ties to Don Young and Ted Stevens to hoover in $27 million dollars in federal earmarks for her town of 6,700 residents during her tenure as mayor:
Palin has also railed against earmarks, touting her opposition to a $223 million bridge in the state as a prime credential for the vice presidential nomination. "As governor, I’ve stood up to the old politics-as-usual, to the special interests, to the lobbyists, the big oil companies, and the good-ol’-boy network," she said Friday.
Except when she rakes in it by the bucket load to boost her political career using that very same good ole boy network. She conveniently left that part out. Hypocrisy, much?
But wait, there’s more. Rick Davis lied to the WaPo about putting Palin through an FBI background check – the FBI says that did not happen. As emptywheel notes, they are omitting whole swaths of problems from public discussion.
And to top it off, Sarah Palin wasn’t Miss Congeniality in the Miss Wasilla pageant. Sure, that’s trivial compared to lying about an FBI background check, but honestly, who in the hell needs to lie about an ages-old, beauty pageant award? Could you get more trivial and shallow?
What else is the McCain campaign fudging around the edges — aren’t you asking yourself that?
Further, Palin just hired counsel in the "troopergate" investigation, even though it’s been ongoing for weeks. Not to go all litigation counsel on you, but if you are the governor of Alaska and you didn’t bother to obtain counsel in an investigation of abuse of office and public corruption you aren’t just putting your own rear end at risk — you put the State of Alaska at risk as well.
Especially where the allegations involve not just you, but also several members of your staff and your spouse who may allegedly have been involved in a scheme together.
One of my law professors once told me that only a fool tries to represent himself in a legal matter, because your emotions and your judgment are impaired when your client is you. For obvious reasons.
In this case, I seriously question McCain’s judgment.
He selected a running mate who didn’t have the common sense to have counsel from the start to protect not just her own interests but also those of the state of Alaska for which she is chief executive. That is a serious breach of fiduciary obligation, let alone just plain dumb. What a stupid, reckless gamble.
And to top it off, her new counsel is now being evasive about whether Palin will live up to her deposition obligations. So much for cooperation and transparency.
The "she lives next to Russia so she’s foreign policy savvy" argument went down the tubes in one fell question yesterday. We also ascertained that she was a member of an Alaska secessionist party? Yep, that’s who you want on the Republican ticket, someone who doesn’t actually want to be an American. Jed Report has more.
Maybe they should have booked her a room at a Holiday Inn Express?
No idea what McCain was thinking…except that he clearly wasn’t bothering to think at all. ABB said a Tennesee Williams play broke out at the Republican convention. Dang it if that isn’t the most apt descriptor I’ve read to date…

in addition, she was for that bridge not against it
McCain bought a Pig-in-the-Poke and now the Cat-is-out-of-the-Bag!
Tennessee Williams – that is wonderful. Perfectly apt.
Thanks, Christy. You are doing so much along with Jane and others and we pups appreciate it.
I asked this before and couldn’t get back to see the answer but as far as palin’s “80%” approval rating, was this poll taken before or after she began lobbying for drilling in alaska?
As to the video above, I think Treason would be apt description.
I mentioned this downstairs but for anyone who missed it. Sarah claims God favors a $30 billion natural gas pipeline she wants for the state.
Shush, Christy! Wouldn’t want to have Palin withdraw from the VP nomination only to be replaced with someone voters would, you know, actually vote for now would we?
But Christy! She was a Journalism major from U Idaho. Of course she knows all she needs to know about the law. /s
Why did the media report Bristol’s age as 16 just last week, and now with this latest revelation, she’s suddenly 17 and pregnant? Did she have a birthday? What is it that is SOOOOOOOOOO important that she now be perceived to be 17?
Could it be the age of her boyfriend is problematic? It is implied that he already graduated from High School.
The woman who allegedly delivered baby Trig is also a rape counselor for teen girls.
Statutory issues, perhaps?
And Jack the Yank has traded the ranch for a handful of beans
Ouch!
You win Christy there is no way that McCain would have missed all of this if McCain really had vetted Sarah Palin?
Now then as much as I loath, despise etc the GOP I know that the GOP must have better VP choices out there than Sarah Palin.
You know like someone who is not being investigated for trying to fire her sister’s ex a cop.
Right there you lose law enforcement and the angry bitter divorced male vote two top GOP voting blocks.
Holy Joe, Mitt, Huckabee and Rudy are now all wondering am I going to settle for being McCain’s second choice on a losing ticket? All for a hope of being a party leader and reshaping the GOP the way I want later.
Assuming that being the 2nd choice for the number two slot on a losing ticket is a good carrier move.
Word is out there that the Repubs are very worried…not about Palin…but about McCain’s judgment being questioned…
So, Christy, this post is perfect!
Quick draw McMoron
before troopergate
Wow, Christy, and you didn’t once mention her 5 months pregnant 17 year old daughter. (That revelation just seems so…quaint…now).
Why does McCain present only one of his daughters…the blond one…whenever he appears???
Please start planning campaign commercials using this stuff…assuming she actually makes it through the week and becomes the VP nominee.
Like when McGovern replaced Eagleton with Sargeant Shriver?
If he’d selected Shriver first, there probably would have been no problem but by choosing him after first selecting Eagleton, it all went to the judgment. Or lack thereof.
Same here. No matter who McCain chooses, if he jettisons Palin, he goes down for having made the poor first choice.
re he video:
oh my. If that goes viral, or (yeah, I know) gets picked up by a network, that is gonna leave one heck of a mark.
good point, Things
Ted Stevens hearts Sarah Palin. Yes!!!! Hooray!
Came across this: Madonna disses John McCain. apparently both the Obama and McInsane camp condemned the video. My thoughts? She’s an artist, the Obama camp should have pooh-poohed it all and then taken a warm glass ofshut the f*ck up. Madonna is *not* part of the political process as they claim. Neither is Neil Young.
God talks to her lets get Biblical and test that
If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.’ But the people answered him not a word.’” (1 Kings 18:21).
Each side made sacrifices to their God without building a fire. The lighting of the fire was to be performed by the strongest god, and would thus reveal Jehovah as the true God.
Baal was silent. Elijah mocked the prophets of Baal and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened” (1 Kings 18:27). Elijah poured a large amount of water over his sacrifice and asked Jehovah to reveal Himself by consuming the sacrifice. “Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench” (1 Kings 18:38). When the people saw the clear victory of Jehovah, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”
Elijah then commanded the people to seize the prophets of Baal and to not let one of them escape. The prophets of Baal were then seized and “Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there” (1 Kings 18:40). God then sent the rain he had promised and the drought ended (1 Kings 18:41-46).

Test her and if she claims falsely to speak for the Lord…well God himself has decreed the penalty.
This has been pointed out to you multiple times but Alaska is a small state. Which means most of the doctors (and most professionals) have more than one specialty OR if they have a specialty, they still treat a lot of folks with problems that are outside of thier specialty.
The doctor you reference does counseling and treatment of abused patients. But that is NOT the only type of patient she sees.
Please give the innuendo a rest.
“We don’t say we’re American, we say we are Alaskan”
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
This woman wants to rule her own country with its own sovereign constitution…
How Un-American and Un-Patriotic is that???? Get elected and take an oath to a Constitution you don’t even want to have??
This, to me, is the biggest scandal about this woman.
John McCain has always depended on the kindness of strangers.
OH
MAH
GAWD
THAT’S the tag that will spell doom for palin, I say go for it
Having his first choice for running mate drop out would demonstrate how little his much-touted experience is worth. Age and experience impart wisdom to some but McCain will always be a very stupid man.
Becuse the brown one cost him an election?
It seems possible that McCain approached Holy Joe, Mitt, Huckabee and Rudy and was turned down because they see him as a major loser.
Why, if she is being investigated for illegally using her Office, does she get an attorney paid for by Alaska? Tax payers get the shaft again.
What is Bristol’s age today? How old was she five months ago?
And now the Cat is on the Hot Tin Roof!
Bob in HI
which would lower the approval but I am disturbed if they have that kind of approval and know she lobbies TO drill, I really want to know if her approval poll was taken before or after they found that out
I am confident Sarah believes her God is loving and just and as such, would only smite infidels, i.e. non-Republicans.
The problem with that, from my Alaska perspective, is that Palin being on the ticket will bring all the fungelical wingnuts out of the woodwork of their log cabins, dragging their barefoot wives behind them by he scruff of their necks, to vote for Sarah.
Right when we had a chance of gaining the AK-AL US House seat and Ted Stevens’ Senate seat – AND the Alaska Legislature. And – for the first time since 1964 – delivering Alaska to a Dem Prez candidate.
We did, until her elevation.
If she’s removed, the fungelicals and wingnuts will skulk back to their cabins, and mutter their bitterness all the way through November.
The rural people I know who are evangelicals will not take it well that she lied about being “Miss Congeniality”. (No, that’s not snark.)
They take the beauty pageant stuff very seriously. (Full disclosure: close college friend won the state pageant and went to Atlantic City. Won big scholarship bucks.)
My friend’s still involved (in a positive way) a bit with that world and she’s an evangelical. This part will make her very unhappy with the governor.
Every time I think I’ve seen the worst, they trump themselves. The “SNL” writers have nothing on Ms. Palin and her “creativity”.
you guys do realize when she pulls out of nomination from the vp spot the republicans will have tons of fun blaming us “bloggers”, right?
gonna be a party
Holy Joe, Mitt, Huckabee and Rudy are now all wondering am I going to settle for being McCain’s second choice on a losing ticket?
Agree with regard to Mitt, Huck, and Rude-E. But JoeLie?
JoeLie is all about what’s best for the country, doncha know. So what I would expect to hear from him would be:
“For the sake of my
gigantic egocountry, I hereby accept !!”Really good point McCain then asked them as a favor in the name of party unity not to mention that they turned McCain down.
That would explain the last minute rush to vet somebody McCain was hoping that someone might change their mind but after Obama’s convention speech they backed off.
New Gallup poll has 50/42 for Obama. First time Obama has broken 50%. Yay!
I’m really having trouble believing Palin makes it to Thursday. Can you imagine the cable news hairdos “recapping” the RNC talking about all the problems McCain and Palin had this week? The thing people (those that actually watch it) will take away from the convention will be Krusty’s poor vetting process and “questions remaining about VP pick Sarah Palin.”
It just keeps getting better, turns out Sarah has ties to Abramoff.
digg, we must.
dugg
Its Alaska the economy depends on oil drilling should be a plus in that state.
I hope they blame all of us who care. Suits me just fine.
What would be the procedure for nominating a new VP candidate after one had already accepted the nomination?
Honestly, of all the things to fudge, that one was utterly unnecessary. And it’s a doozy, don’t you think? Plays right into the “People Magazine” crowd…ouch!
Of course, Hacktacular Howie in today’s Media Notes column in the WaPo0 had a paragraph where he stated that it was Drudge who really pumped the story on Palin’s pregnancy on Sunday.
So, please, let them blame Drudge as much as they want.
I think we can thank McCain’s VP choice for that news because aside from the Hurricane what else have people talked about:)
can mccain and the republican party simply concede this election?
I am just wondering
What would be the procedure for nominating a new VP candidate after one had already accepted the nomination?
I’m pretty sure those take place, by way of press release, on late Friday afternoons.
Okay this part is making me positively giddy. She hired a lobbyist who was part of Team Abramoff. ?!?
Barack’s acceptance speech. Post convention bump may just now be registering.
According to AmericaBlog Palin claims to have visited Ireland (part of her large knowledge of diplomacy) but it turns out that she had a stopover but had time to buy a sweater and a mug in the airport.
If McCain really knew about the Daughter ahead of time wouldn’t he have insisted the shotgun marriage be preformed before he announced his VP pick?
I am having visions of this
Yeah, it is looking more and more as if McCain’s choice of Palin will be a huge gift to Obama.
STATUTORY COVERSTORY
True but the MSM hacks stopped covering that the second Palin was announced then the scandal coverage kicked in the Obama bounce would have been bigger if the MSM had covered it more.
But McCain blocked that play with his face! Palin’s scandals have been getting the coverage so if McCain’s numbers stay low then Palin is the factor.
Gwin says I won: and
Take that Palin for trying to steal the title!
Isn’t the age of consent 16?
The MSM has barely covered the Palin scandals. So far they’ve mainly talked about her daughter being pregnant. When the general public begins to get a sense of how corrupt Palin really is, I think we’ll witness an aborted nomination.
yup
Great post upstairs by Suzanne. But what’s with the sunglasses?
Please stop it.
will do.
Sarah Palin has more “Executive” experience than John McCain!
In short order we shall learn that memory loss caused by electroshock therapy caused Palin to forget to pay her nanny’s Social Security tax, and that will be that.
Alaska’s proximity to Russia is not a trivial matter, really.
Russia is bidding on the construction of a pipeline that would supply gas to the 48 contiguous states, drawing on sources in Alaska.
Also, Russia has a plan (a very olde one going back to Czar Nicholas II) to build a tunnel from Siberia to Alaska that would include rail transportation and gas pipeline connections. This is likely to be completed before any substantial oil production even begins trickle down form ANWR. It would be over 3,000 miles.
hahahaha, I caught that too!
Also, the silver lining on this GOP telethon for NOLA is that it reminds everyone of just how callous the Bush administration and his GOP enablers are. This show of concern just conjures up a picture of a wife beater sending flowers and chocolates…not buyin’ it.
CHS:
You need a better metaphor: what else is the McCain campaign hiding under its blouse. Or parka.
So far all I hear are the words “reform” and “competence” from the pukes on MSM. And “excited” and “vetted”.
sigh.
Everyone in the mainstream media has covered all the major facets of this nomination, and I’m not talking about the babies: the lack of vetting, the bridge to nowhere, troopergate, the secessionist party. Read, in particular, the Times’ Bumiller story, which really massacres McCain. Meanwhile, every op-ed in the major papers is about Palin, and most excoriate the choice. Relax: at this point the Democrats merely need to refrain from gloating and giggling.
But I like gloating and giggling. :)
My friend thinks he is informed because he watches newshour and BBC. I will admit I don’t read the newspapers as much as I’d like. Thank goodness for FDL and others.
Thanks Brendanx for this info. I was worried about low information voters like our household here! I wonder if McCain just got all ornery and chose Palin to stick to some people who wouldn’t accept his man crush, Hojo?
I don’t understand the request.
I think that at this point the babies are just gravy, given the plethora of questions going to McCain’s judgment and temperament, and Palin’s ethics and experience and Democrats are politically sane to shy from the family drama. Nevertheless, it’s a legitimate issue that these callous kooks raise a girl without contraception then insist her “keeping the baby” (whether “keeping” is the opposite of abortion or giving it to someone else to be raised is an open question) is her “choice”. I think Obama will keep a lid on any attempt to bring the issue of abortion into relief, but ordinary people are right to voice revulsion and ridicule of the “family values” this Waco North freakshow want to foist on normal parents, and they’re even within their rights to speculate about whose baby that really is.
I understand and even approve of the political calculation here, but women are being put second, because the Palin family circumstances could put klieg lights on the issue of abortion and contraception and make it clear just what the consequences are of eliminating our tenuous rights to both.
Put things in perspective: 40 million people got an unmediated look at Obama, and McCain between that hammer and the anvil of another Katrina, panicked by picking Palin. Or, as a commenter here said, “He just shit and stepped back into it.” The media can’t “energize” people just by saying it’s so. For every fundie loon there’s some “independent” male with a vision of himself as a protector of our security who’s repelled, or a woman who raises a family and is aghast at a crazy lady who would keep her daughters from getting knocked up.
The key word is “vetted”. That’s the big story, and amazingly, the MSM have got it right: it goes to McCain’s judgment and temperament.
Meant “who would keep her daughters from protecting themselves from getting knocked up.”
I believe the point is that smearing a 17 year old and the rest of the family by extension using innuendo without having any objective evidence to back-up said smears is both impolite and a losing idea that will do nothing but gain sympathy for the family.
If there is specific, credible evidence that refutes the claim that Trig is the child of Sarah and not the child of Bristol (which is the innuendo being pushed), then bring it forth. Trying to read a bunch of pictures does not qualify. Nor does continual mention of a specialty by the doctor who delivered the child in question.
All the smears and innuendo do nothing to advance Freedom of Choice, Freedom of Contraception, and sexual education beyond saying abstinence only.
I know my response is way down the line, but there is something that is really bothering me here.I know two parent working familys with one “normal” child, good health no obvious problems, and my friends are struggling with one child. What is the income and resources for this family of (5) soon to be (6) and the one child with down sydrome that needs much love and attetion and caring.I hope someone can answer this for me.
For there seems to be no mention of how the Palins are living.
You sound like the Republicans here, where conversations between commenters on a blog amount to a “smear” they can pin on the party most here support. Don’t let them spook you.
Palin, an elected official, hid her pregnancy. She was within her rights to do so, but I’m not going to be a bit curious why, especially when she makes everyone else’s pregnancies her business? Come on, I’m human.
If CHS doesn’t want it discussed, that makes sense. It’s just that I think she’s overly sensitive to the reach of the Republican campaign at the expense of the free-for-all nature of a comment thread. That’s the last I’ll opine on it: Democrats thankfully have the luxury of being able to completely ignore the family freakshow aspect of Palin.
But it will energize the Republican base.
Let me reiterate my bigger point, aside from the worth of plunger’s innuendo. Among the big stories in this pick is the issue of abortion, an illustration of what the practical consequences of a ban on abortion, and curtailment of access to contraception would be. Yet that’s the one issue that won’t be directly addressed by Democrats. Again, I understand the reasons, but just thought I’d note it.
You seem to be missing the point here.
Christy (and myself and others) are not trying to impede the conversation. What is being attempted is to assure that folks are bringing verifiable information to the conversation and not just using nothing but innuendo to smear someone.
Plunger has for days now been using the fact that Palin’s doctor counsels sexual abuse and rape victims to imply that Bristol was the actual mother of Trig and that’s why this doctor was used.. No proof to this so it is nothing but innuendo and conjecture. That is a Republican/Rovian level smear, not conversation.
Or do you think we should resort to those level of tactics?
Palin’s position on abortion, whether for herself or her daughter (if you notice, all the right wing is saying that Bristol “chose” to keep her child) is a viable topic as she is showing a choice for her and her family that she would deny to others.
Her pushing of “abstinence only” education while her child is getting pregnant at 17 is a viable topic.
Using innuendo about how her doctor that delivered her Downs Syndrome son to imply that the son was actually her daughter’s because the doctor treats sexual abuse and rape victims (amongst other patients) is NOT a viable topic.
I thought you would be able to fully understand the difference.
Oh, we all know what part of his anatomy McCain uses to do his “thinking.”
The issues and reality mean nothing. It’s all about image and perception, smoke and mirrors. The Republicans are the masters in pulling the strings of the corporate media and the public, by and large, dance the Howdy Dowdy to the Republican snake charmers.
This is from someone in Alaska who says to spread the word:
“Palin has spent millions of Alaska state dollars on aerial hunting of
predators from helicopters and airplanes, dollars that should have been spent, for example, on Alaska’s failing school system. We have the lowest rate of high school graduation in the country.
Prior to her one year as governor of Alaska, she was mayor of Wasilla, a small red neck town outside Anchorage. The average maximum education level of parents of junior high school kids in Wasilla is 10th grade. These people don’t have a concept of the world around them or of the
serious issues facing the US. Furthermore, they don’t care. So long
as they can go out and hunt their moose every fall, kill wolves and
bears and drive their snow mobiles and ATVs through every corner of the
wilderness, they’re happy. I wish I were exaggerating.”
Perhaps the education situation in Alaska should see a little more daylight, in terms of vetting.
The more I think about it, the more I think McCain’s got a crush on Palin. Both of his wives were beauty contestants and now his choice for VP too?! Still I’m thankful at the spectacular implosion the republicans are treating us to!
The way I see it, Palin’s “family values” talk is a valid topic of discussion because of the wide difference between what she wants to claim for herself, and what she wants to control in everyone else.
The existence of that difference is evidence that her political positions are failures.
She wants abstinence to be the ONLY sex education taught anywhere. That her own daughter turns up pregnant as a minor is evidence that that position is a failure.
She is loudly against any American woman or girl having “privacy” or “choice” in their reproductive life; she wants the State to enforce laws against the protection of such “privacy” and the exercise of such “choice.” Yet she wants “privacy” maintained around her daughter’s “choice” to bear a child.
In other words, State enforcement of sexual ignorance and reproduction is for OTHER PEOPLE — not for Sarah Palin and the Palin blood kin!
I do believe that can be called Abuse of Power.
It is a political topic.
