What does a person who’s politically devoted deal with friends who are ignorant yet opinionated?
I just had a blow-out with my spouse about the importance of spending time on the internet delving into the information that we need as a country to carry on. I’ve blown off other friends diatribes about being politically active. But I hear their message…”Don’t involve US”.
Now it’s hitting close to home and I can’t back down.
Is this a symptom of what we face in the coming 2 months?
Unfortunately, being feisty, every attack argument from their side ” don’t get so involved, you get too intense”, is something I hear too often and I’m not willing to hear it from family.
Maybe it would be good to have a ” Mediator” explain how we can keep our friendships in a time of crisis.

twas my first evah serious post. as i said, last night – nervous nellie but today, even with only 3 hours sleep and one cup of coffee in me, i ran with the big dogs and spoke truth to power.

but i gotta say, my heart is down here in the dark with the pups. i really do think of myself as just a pup who gets to play backstage. its better than any backstage pass at any rock show – and its every forking nite!

I wish it were as simple as getting a divorce. It’s so much more complicated than that.
The opinions I’m hearing are from a much broader range than my spouse [who’s using my political information involvement[ ie. obsession] as a reason to attack me. We are both of the same affiliation. He’s just much more cautious, less informed and therefore more trusting in our government than I am.
It seems to be more of a general group thought that being informed, and spending countless hours studying the alternative information is fruitless. No one pays you to study the incredibly complicated events in our current government activities.
Personally, I wish I could just hit them all upside the head with a 2×4 into next week.
But I sincerely believe that violence begets violence.

I hear you. And, really, I didn’t get divorced over politics……but over the whole picture. And I’ve found ways to talk with my neo-con twin brother so that we can stay friends even if we do not agree on anything politically. I’m lucky to have informed and interested and curious people in my circle. This is a bad time because the country is so split and so anti-intellectual (i.e.; anti- learning!). Hang in. Find people who share your views. I don’t trust our govt. as far as I could throw them, but I have children and grandchildren so I hang in and try to educate. And mostly I rather naively hope for the best.

What I’ve found is that if you’re really lucky, you’ll find one sympatico person who shares your passion for politics, news, all this stuff. It’s actually pretty rare.
Just explain it to other people as “I’m a politics buff” like some others are baseball fanatics, know all the stats, etc.

Democracy is messy and should accommodate disparate opinions. The breakdown here has got to do, in part, with so much uninformed opinion.

As I read your posts in this thread, I get the strong impression that you are very dismayed that you cannot persuade others of your “truths”. Or not so often as you might wish.

You have your truth; others have theirs. Why get so fretted when others do not see things as you see them? It was always thus. Do what you can and conserve your energies to fight for what you feel/think is right. Put your case strongly, with good information; that is your work. That’s my take.

Coming home midday to a Suzanne post – a beauty by the way – was a nice surprise.

Important thing about Republicans – there used to be a whole lot of conscience-driven Republicans who I disagreed with and respected. Most are gone, replaced by radicals. Their radicalism makes America’s ‘leftist-extremists’ of the 60’s seem like Cub Scouts.

I am proud to know Suzanne as of the former strain.

I think that openhope’s concern goes deeper than being a buff of some subject, inasmuch as politics ought to speak to our survival, and, at least for me, baseball and such do not do so. Benj Franklin seems to have been correct when he posited that politics was a fundamental necessity and study if the American polity as founded would survive.

I am pleased to see that you appreciate, as I read you, that many of these latter day Republicans are not reactionaries so much as radicals. And they certainly are not true conservatives. But as I have posted here before, that opens a whole other rat’s nest: conservative, a or conservative b, etc.

McCarthism of the 50s unjustly painted many “liberals” as communist traitors. McCarthy was expossed for the dirty trickster he was.
In Minnneapolis we see the same tarbrush on “peace activists”.
I have a conservative republican friend who was watching the convention tonight as we spoke on the phone. The news showed people breaking windows. vandalizing and other damage. She believed it was the peace demonstrators. I ezplained to her if you want to demonstrate for peace you act peacefully. She got it, partly but not that these thugs were there to smear the peace movement.
We are in a new era of McCarthyism.

However, I strongly believe that we need “socialized medicine” in the U.S. We need to keep local health care jobs safe and provide access to everyone. How else can we all be strong?

The American culture has moved more to materialism. Consume, have, use and win. They are not taught that the constitution is necessary to have freedom. They see freedom as a good economy. They see failure as not achieving material goals. Ethics, morals and esoteric values are not part of what consumes their life and consciousness. They want the material dream. I think we are playing to an audience that is not listening.
Patriotism or the lack of is defined as that that defends these values.
ACLU is probably one of the most conservative organization attempting to save our democracy…ACLU is tarred as a pinko effort.

I fear you’re right. It’s appalling the amount of silence on the police brutality at both conventions.
But especially the RNC. Brutality in the streets, pink boas and partying in the convention.
But worse, at the Dems Deal, no mention of overt police force? No outrage at the orchestrated violence against dissent.
On the matter of the anarchists…several young people I’ve talked to reminded me that smashing the windows of a “corporate” entity is far less violent than what those same corporations inflict on local people in a global monopoly. And they’re right.

The peace deonstrations are not put on by Anarchists. Rather iI have spoken with demonstrators in many other marches (Seattle WTO, LA) that verify goon squads posing as demonstrators nave been sent to wreck the orderly demonstrations with violence.
I my mind violence has no justification. The peace movement of the 60-70s had the same problem… opportunististic drug organizations exploited it to market drugs. They were not peace activists. And niether are the thugs that are destroying property. Ask Dr. Murphy who has been to many and seen these tactics.
