James Dobson, 1/13/2007
"Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances."
James Dobson told The Washington Times on Friday that he now fully supports McCain.
"If flip-flopping is a sin, I’m a sinner."
Who picked Palin?
Now that the dust is settling on the announcement, it’s pretty clear that Palin was the choice of the extreme religious right. We now know that:
- McSame’s first choice was Lieberman, but the religious right vetoed him
- Rove also tried to kill the Lieberman pick
- Before selecting her, McSame had only met Palin once
- The Palin pick was uniformly praised by right wing religious leaders
And this morning we find out that the Council For National Policy (CNP) — a secretive cabal of which Dobson and Tony Perkins are members — personally vetted Palin in Minneapolis.
Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC’s spectacle in Denver, the country’s most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy.
This is a big scandal, right? That James Dobson is picking the Vice President of the United States? Not at all. So far the media are painting this selection — not as a total cave to his own extremist fundie base — but more evidence of McSame’s maverick ways.
The fact is, McSame the Maverick wasn’t allowed to pick the candidate he thought would make the best vice president by the wing of his own party he once called "the agents of intolerance." If he can’t stand up to James Dobson, how can we trust him to stand up to al Qaeda?

Now we know who will be picking our judges.
Where does Dobson’s money come from?
Ah, BT, GREAT POST.
The Obama campaign should run with this. I can just see the ads now. This is where the gold is on the Palin pick.
McCain is planning to find some lobbyists to stand up to al Qaeda.
Nice.
Have Hall and Oates been booked to sing “Sarah Smile” yet? Maybe that can be the campaign song since Van Halen objected.
Include the fact that Obama’s speech precipitated this disastrous leap. Obama left him stunned Thursday night and McCain responded with a wild haymaker.
Some people see the fact that Palin dominated the coverage as some evidence of Rovian wile. No, it’s the definition of desperation: short term gain that is the beginning of ruin for McCain.
Bom dia pups
good grief nothing surprises me about the republican party anymore let alone the freepers picking the vp candidate. maverick my ass
McCrazy had it right when he called Dobson an agent of intollerance, this is proof that by aligning himself with these people McCrazy is NOT a maverick, but an agent of intollerance as well.
Breaking news:
Georgia10 has an interesting article questioning Sarah Palin’s connections to the radical Alaskan Independence Party over at Big Orange.
They want to be their own freaking country!
agreed
Yeah, the coverage is so biased — no one notes, either, that it isn’t a sign of weakness that he has to make a crazy choice just to lock down the Republican base at this point.
Some vetting process…..
Q: are you a fundie?
A: yes
Q: anything else?
A: Nope….
More evidence of excellent vetting by McPOW.
hmmm what will Focus on the family have to say about that…premarital sex. How is that abstinence thing working for them?
saw reader gaiilionfong post this 2 threads down – and have been e mailing it like crazy
Maverick, my ass – this goes right back to Senator Kerry’s talking points yesterday -
Prisoner
Of
Wingers
Congratulations, Dr. Dobson – It’s a foot-in-mouth!
Well that Abstinence only parental education really worked…
So who is going to take care of Palin’s 5 month old infant now?
Caught snippets of a Brian Williams interview with McCain this morning. I rarely watch political coverage on tv anywhere, so I kind of see McCain from the perspective of the lovelorn pundits who are so disappointed with this new McCain. Instead of the garrulous, affable, lovably shallow personality they liked so much he is zombified, and on script. Today’s talking point was particularly repellent: Republicans are “putting America first” with their response to Katrina. Get it?
There was also something about Cindy McCain being “offended” by Obama’s criticisms of McCain (and presumably the houses). I would be awfully tempted to respond to this that maybe Cindy McCain should have picked another line of work for her husband if she can’t take the heat. But that’s why I’m not running the Obama campaign — McCain’s not so much hiding behind Cindy’s skirts as baiting the Obama camp to put Michelle in play.
OMG..you could not write this script if you tried.
May I suggest John for a boy and Cindy for a girl.
No, no! It’s going to score big with America’s women, who love their daughters getting knocked up and stuck with babies at 17.
And McCane knew all about it!! Perfect demonstration of fundy birth control.
I knew this shot wasn’t gonna fly, they set it up so Palin would look victimized.
How about “POW” for a boy. Can’t be worse than Skyler (Schuyler?) or Tyler, can it?
You did, indeed. I saw your comments on the emptywheel thread.
Aren’t women really fertile right after they give birth on not sure this news will stop the rumors. I certainly have speculated on this a bunch but I think its better now to wait until we can prove something.
Right now Palin’s story smells
fishylike 3 days out in the sun on a humid sunny day with flies buzzing around fish. But lets leave it at that until.
I am going to try and take my own advice:)
Oh Jeebus, that is completely rich…. What the hell will they come up with tomorrow it gets farther and father out there day by day.
John Kerry nailed it. McCain is now captive to the most extreme of his party. The Michelle Bachmann-Mean Jean Schmidt-Helen Chenoweth wing of the Republicans. This is not the Republican party of Sandra Day O’Connor or any way shape or form of moderation.
POW = Prisoner of Wingnuts now.
That’s a good suggestion and it’s gender neutral so it could work for both.
“I’m not a bank robber – I’m a drug dealer!”
Great the Southern States Rights nuts (code for we still support the Confederacy) vote should be McCain’s now.
Why did Sarah give her kids such bizarre names?
Oh, my God. This is such a setup. As if the announcement wouldn’t have come anyway, when the daughter the V.P. choice was seen to be pregnant!
And how malicious was the rumor, anyway? Her daughter is fucking pregnant!
Because she is a religious nut.
senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites and partisan Democrats, but also were the subject of heightened interest from mainstream news media.
”The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama’s name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their ’campaign of change,”’ a senior aide said.
I said this yesterday but it bears repeating. I am “offended” that Cindy thinks it’s perfectly fine to throw her family away and disinherit them 5 minutes after their father passed. Cindy really needs to STFU!
Dobson puts the ick in McCain’s Maverick.
So we are going to have our own version of a soap opera in the white house IF McBush becomes Prez….. the next thing we can look forward to is a “missing white woman” 24/7 on Headline News with that Nancy person….
Speaking of religious nuts, she believes in creationism, obviously. Can someone with Biden’s ear, or any other Catholic Democrat’s, remind him that the Catholic Church endorses the theory of evolution and that teaching creationism in schools amounts to establishment of religion that discriminates against Catholics, among other groups.
So maybe it’s time to talk about sex education now.
Or not… Let’s leave it to the parents. Yeah, that’ll get it done.
I bet a nickel right now that the next thing we hear from Gov. Palin is the announcement that ‘her family needs her now’ or something like that.
And he will have them do it in the finest lobbyist tradition – he’ll get bin Laden to hire them. After all, it’s always just the marketing that needs to be improved and who better to help bin Laden in marketing than a bunch of lobbyists
We need a debate on sex education saying no vs birth control which is more effective Bush has had a few years to try out his ideas and the VP’s daughter gives this debate legs.
I wonder what the latest numbers are on teen births in just say No states vs lets teach the kids about birth control states?
This could be an interesting debate.
I now live in fear if McCain wins the election.
John McCain & Sarah Palin on Shattering the Glass Ceiling
What am I missing here? How does this knock down rumors? (Knock down? There is a pun there somewhere.)
All Palin has to do is to release her medical records. This gets more bizarre by the hour.
Blue Texan:
Dobson’s Choice is a Hobson’s Choice.
With all due respect, the Confederacy should have been allowed to secede. I don’t think forcing them to stay in the Union has done a single good thing for this country, and it’s done a shitload of bad things.
Lincoln made a colossal mistake.
Presumably she wouldn’t have gotten knocked up with a second one right after delivering the first.
A perennial argument, but one I can’t resist. The Confederacy would have been aggressively imperialistic, more than we are, and would have spread slavery to Mexico and the Caribbean. A good thing we kept them.
Normal people presumably wouldn’t but these people are not normal.
I agree. But it pisses the daylights out of me for abstinence to be labeled as some form of sex ed. It is nothing more than a suggestion (we suggest that you abstain) but it is not educating young people so that they may protect themselves
Just look at the SW & Southern states….. AZ comes in somewhere 49 in education, have one of the highest high school drop out rate, teen pregnancy and poor test scores. All because the fundies in our legislature who push for charter schools (no standards or certified teachers), no sex education, school vouchers, etc….
Ask McCain…. can he defend his home states record on education and standing on these issues?
Were not Rethugs we’re americans
Thats more fight than McCain did when Karl Rove was saying some very mean stuff about his own kid.
If anything the fact that they brought it up and and announced the rumor will give it more life IMHO.
I won’t take that bet, thanks. That looks increasingly possible. Boy, people here are really quick studies, I have to say.
Mavericity?
It’s too bad that all pregnant teenagers can’t be the daughter of a Governor.
jeebus christ!
sarah’s little kid gets preggers and it’s all obama’s fault for victimizing her… i get it.
(if “levi” dont work out in the script, maybe they can make him a muslim… well, no…)
I listened to a caller on C-Span this morning, a self-described Hispanic woman living in Colorado explain that she completely supports McCain and Palin because they are “honest” and that is very important when voting for a president and vice-president. She added that Barack Obama is NOT honest, that he just says whatever he thinks will get him elected.
If she had simply contended that Obama tells voters what they want to hear, I would accept that a case could be made for that, every politician is guilty of it to some extent. When she says that John McCain is honest, it is clear she is engaging in selective observation and no facts which contradict her preconceptions will ever resonate with her.
If anything it draws open the curtain a little more on this Wasilla Wackiness. Americans don’t like a freak show.
Would you trust her medical records? I do not think this will knock the rumors I do think we should wait until we can prove something.
Then and only then we should publicly bring this up again.
We had to free the slaves somehow the war did do that.
You must be kidding?
Like stated earlier in the thread, this will lauch the sex education thing into public debate. What can the fundies say to counter the FACT that here we have yet another example of a teen not abstaining.
I need my barf bags again….
Guy on CNN…..”this is what this country does….. we come together during disasters and help one another” …… WAS this guy around during Katrina? … WTF?
Mexico got rid of slavery before America did bringing slavery back would not have been popular.
I know. Nor would Southern annexation of the country have been.
I agree with your anger thats why I want the debate:) With Bush there was a big push to just say NO in some states I think now is a good time to evaluate this policy on the numbers.
By comparing it to the numbers both before the just say No policy took effect and the numbers in birth control is mentioned in sex ed states.
Mom praises abstinence, daughter not so much…
It will launch it into the public debate, but not the presidential one. At the moment, every normal parent in the country, still the majority, sees Palin as the parent they try not to be. I hope no one’s agonizing over how this can play to the Republicans’ benefit, because it can’t.
Amen, sister. It’s just about being a blind, uncaring parent. Most people will see this Palin for the zealous screw-up she is, and that the screw-up was with her kid’s life.
Thanks to the VP we need to examine Alaska too. Also I think this issue could be a post. This is a foul mouthed fem blog right birth control vs just say no seems like a perfect fit:)
Not just Dobson, but the SBC’s Richard Land as well.
This is funny…. Sarah Palin’s Pregnancy Decision Map
enlarge and enjoy…. I
t is now on Americablog where readers have been writing in asking the question how Palin intends to balance her family and work life….. considering she has a special needs infant.
Exactly. Why didn’t she tell McCain about this when he asked her to be on the damned ticket last week? Or just tell him “thanks but no thanks”?
Serious lack of judgement on her and McCain’s part.
Maybe the GOP is trying to put a wedge between Hispanics and African Americans with Agent Provocateurs this caller might be real and legal.
But Lou Dobbs and Glen Beck everyday spewing the hate of brown people cannot be helping the GOP get any of our votes.
Obama’s honesty compared to McCain’s that seems like a GOP talking point trying to get floated in the MSM, I bet they fall for it.
Bonus stupid points for the MSM if they say Hispanics feel this way about Obama.
Rove is trying to kill to birds with one stone. I bet he believes the Hispanics won’t support Obama talking points that came out in the Primaries.
Not so much in the Bible-Belt. My sister lived in McAlester, OK during the ’80s and early ’90s. General consensus opposed teaching sex-ed in the schools, providing contraception completely out of the question. Maybe two-thirds of girls had children before finishing high school. Girl’s parents took over and raised the new babies with their other youngin’s.
BTW – the above is completely anecdotal, I lack any statistics to back it up.
She mentioned the fact that she was Hispanic. I didn’t find it particularly significant and probably shouldn’t have included it. I would say that while she is representative of an average McCain supporter, I don’t feel that she typifies any trend among Hispanic voters.
If you believe Palin was completely vetted, I have a bridge in Alaska you might want to buy.
As any yet caught the irony that on a day when people are worried whether the levees of New Orleans will hold, that on this day we learn that Sarah Palin’s future son-in-law has the name Levi?
there’s just not too many Pipers out there
Gee, why would that be?
