Jane and Lindsay have the police-state angle covered, so for this post I’m concentrating on the other stuff:
– Doesn’t the blue elephant RNC graphic (which local CBS affiliate WCCO-TV uses on its RNC news website) remind you of a certain Great Old One?
– As you see the news reports of all the Republican luminaries graciously begging off appearing at the RNC "because of Gustav", remember that many if not most of them had made that decision well before Gustav was a blip on the radar screen. In fact, National Republican Congressional Committee chair Tom Cole told his fellow Republican congressional candidates to stay away back in July:
The NRCC chief discouraged candidates from attending the national convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, saying that spending days there would be a “waste of time,” and they would be better off campaigning.
– Assuming Sarah Palin shows up at the Xcel Center, you can entertain yourself by watching her televised appearance and comparing it with the tidbits cited (such as this one) at the Alaskan blog The Mudflats. The proprietor has already bested the national media by catching Palin in a big fat lie involving the Bridge to Nowhere.
– Speaking of lying and liars, Howie Klein points out the WaPo’s showing that John McCain is lying like a rug about Obama and taxes, yet can’t quite bring itself to use the L-word to describe him and what he’s doing. Howie also recommends that you go visit ObamaTaxCut.com to find out whether your taxes will be cut under Obama’s plan (if you’re like 95% of all Americans, the answer is "yes").
– As you know by now, Bush and McCain have cut short their RNC appearances to do photo-ops in New Orleans. Meanwhile, just as he did for the flooding of the Mississippi back in the spring, Obama is mobilizing his volunteers to provide aid however it is needed. I suspect that Obama’s move is the more useful one, as far as the Gulf Coast residents are concerned, and the least likely to interfere with first-responder efforts; as he says, "The thing that I always am concerned about in the middle of a storm is whether we’re drawing resources away from folks on the ground because the Secret Service and various security requirements sometimes it pulls police, fire and other departments away from concentrating on the job." Contrast this with McCain’s refusal to cancel an Iowa flood photo-op despite being asked to do so by Iowa’s governor.

Are we back?
Okay, we’re having a news blitz, and I just had a kinda hard time getting here, and I’m imagining many others are too.
I spent the afternoon with my family in the open air, blue skies overhead. We barbequed and went in the pool and here I am, finally, trying to catch up.
Palin was arrested? No, that was who, Amy Goodman? Is she pregnant too? Is every one either knocked up or being arrested? I’m kidding, of course.
Hello?
Heh, I’ve had 4 comments gobbled up within the past 5 minutes…!
This is the first time since Siun’s thread that I have been able to get back on.
Hi, PW, Hi, eCAHN
Yeah, I’ve been shut out of FDL for ages…seems like it just went down “poof”!
FunnyD
So any word from the high command was the government shutting us down for a practice run or was this just a tech glitch.
The pointy hatted tinfoil crowd must be panicking about coincidence right now.
Made me look for my tinfoilhat thinking the St Paul police state had knocked FDL off the toobz…(second attempt to post this now)
Do we have anyone in the GOP convention asking questions? Someone White and WASPY looking who can infiltrate?
Hello from the AR, MO border where the clouds of Gustav provided a spectacular sunset this evening.
Anyone know if George and John had Mccake together today?
Sorry if this has already been posted, youtube of CNN’s Campbell Brown shredding Tucker Bounds on the subject of Palin’s lack of qualification. I didn’t know Brown was capable but it is worth checking out.
Got to see this, Campbell Brown eviscerates Tuckers Bounds on Palin.

Kristallnacht (IPA: [kr,ɪst.aɫ.n’ɒxt]; literally “Crystal night”) or The Night Of Broken Glass was a pogrom in Nazi Germany on 9–10 November 1938. On a single night, 91 Jews were murdered, and 25,000–30,000 were arrested and deported to concentration camps.[1][2] It is often called Novemberpogrom in German.
The Nazis coordinated an attack on Jewish people and their property in Germany and German-controlled lands as a part of Hitler’s anti-Semitic policy.[3]
On November 7, 1938, Herschel Grynszpan, a 17-year old German Jew enraged by his family’s expulsion from Germany, walked into the German Embassy in Paris and fired five shots at a junior diplomat, Ernst vom Rath. Two days later, the diplomat died and Germany was in the grip of skillfully orchestrated anti-Jewish violence. In the early hours of November 10, coordinated destruction broke out in cities, towns and villages throughout the Third Reich.

I wonder if Laura Bush will stick her head out a window and see what is happening.
I meant to post this on Siun’s thread. I wonder if we all are on some government list?
When Obama wins how do we find out?
I would love to frame some offical government papers saying the feds were watching me talk about Lefty Street Cred!
Way to go angry fem bloggers! First, the neo-cons ignore you, then those cry baby chicken hawks go on C-Span and whine about “those meanie bloggers, wah! wah!”. Of course Nuremburg Nooner viciously compared Democrats to Der Fuhrer, (whose banker was Fritz Thyssen). Mornin Joe cannot run for political office because the internet is an ugly place, where stories about dead interns never end. But it was only one dead girl who died in his office from a blow to the head. Tucker Carlson, became a neo-con when a young infant, which makes him both stupid and corrupt. Margaret Carlson is his twin sister.
They should be mad at us. Total Information Awareness spent much effort and money capturing what “free press’ there used to be. Then these reality based hippies with computers undermined their propaganda machines.
Ugly, Vicious, Liberal, Cruel, Leftist and Awful Citizen Activists (with those dangerous cameras and laptops), I salute you!
It as amazing, I saw it live.
So much strangeness.
ES – Nice time of year for sunsets I think. I love autumn light – almost.
Strange Days Indeed, tho.
OMG, PW. LOL. ROTFLMAO.
I’m going to blatantly steal that “Great Old One” bit, and post it up on a board that’s heavy with HPL fans.
That’s funny, the timestamp on our nearly identical posts was 6:58 but I must’ve hit “submit” seconds before you did.
The FDL server appears to be really struggling, I hope it hasn’t been possessed by the demons at DHS.
FDL has been hit-or-miss today or playing hide-&-go seek.
Are we back?
My paranoia is now subsiding….
a little…
That’s what they want you to think . . .
We have never said the lies or threats the right unloaded on the Clintons. We are the majority who wants the war over, Bush out and thinks the economy sucks despite the best lies telling us otherwise from the Don’t Worry be Happy Media.
We have been right about the issues and they have been wrong all during the Bush years.
We report a story they ignore it until they can’t ignore it any more and then they wonder why nobody watches.
Heh, a wee bit…! ;-)
Ian has video of Amy Goodman being arrested upstairs.
This fact we should drill in the toilet flush MSM!

Uh-uh.
Ogdru Jahad.
I knew it Bush is from one of those old inbred degenerate New England families HP Lovecraft is always writing about!
The Stars are not Right!
Could this be misconstrued as a ‘Bad Day’…?

“what say you…?”
It’s all good for Republicans!
Mostly just a (really) bad candidate. The Palin choice really showcases McCain’s phenomenally poor judgment.
Tucker Bounds’ BS knows no bounds.
I was just shocked that Campbell Brown called him on it instead of accepting his talking points at face value.
I left out this nugget from Josh… which nicely wraps it up…
Ya think…? ;-)
All this, and McCain now has a spokesman out saying that ‘oh yes, we really did vet her thoroughly’.
Why do I not believe him? /s
According to CNN, the pregnancy story came out when they found out they were in Anchorage investigating the story. I say she doesn’t last the week.
The Villager media is not happy at being fooled by McCain’s choice. Also, his choice invalidates their Villager credibility. Finally, they see the stuff we’ve got on her (see CT’s 30) even if they haven’t put it all on the air yet.
They are pissed. This nomination will NOT stand.
One thing that galled me during that exchange was that Tucker said she’d made decisions as the CinC of the AK Guard and Campbell rightly called him on it, but, he’d said she commanded them while they were deployed in Iraq… First, she was elected after they’d already been deployed to Iraq, and, second, she has no say so over them when they’re federalized and serving…! Teh stoopid… It burns…!
I think she almost HAS to withdraw prior to being formally nominated, i.e. within a couple days. At any point after that the campaign takes an even bigger and potentially game-ending hit.
PW!
The Alaskan blog, the Mudflats is great. I’ve read at least four posts and they are very, very interesting. I’ve bookmarked this for daily reading. Thanks!
Her withdrawal will hurt McCain on many levels: with the fundies, who will feel betrayed by him, and with everyone else, who will remember how choosing talent unwisely has hurt America the last eight years.
But McCain is a very stubborn man and, I suspect, she is a very stubborn woman. We shall see.
It reminded me a little of Chris Matthews nailing that punk (can’t remember but think he was a wingnut blogger) who claimed Obama’s proposing talks with Iran was appeasement. Matthews proved the guy was spouting talking points with no actual comprehension of what the term appeasement meant.
watertiger is a couple flights up
Yes, that is exactly what it reminded me of.
I mentioned earlier that even Fox has lost confidence in her. Shep Smith correcting himself when he referred to her as the candidate. He said at least until she goes before the convention, at least.
This douchebag, Kevin James.
She supported the Bridge To Nowhere before she was against it…but she still likes the Road to the Bridge to Nowhere! At least she likes the Federal “pork”…(i.e. OUR tax dollars). Meanwhile the infrastructure decays on tens of thousands of really important roads and highways throughout the country.
And this in a State that receives 80% of its budget from Oil and Gas leases and taxes. That doesn’t have State Income Taxes or a Sales Tax. Yet they still want a disproportionate share of Federal tax money? I wish the Republicans would have the audacity of taxing the Oil and Gas industry 80% of the FEDERAL Budget?
Oh! But that would raise gasoline prices they’d caterwaul. Which means when Alaska raises most of its budget from oil and gas leases/taxes that also increases the cost of gasoline…righhhhht????
Remember, it is PALIN that has sought to reveal her daughters current “five month” pregnancy as a foil to deflect the rumors swirling about her own.
Palin has already detailed many aspects of her pregnancy…her being told that the tests (amniocentesis?) showed that her child would have Trisomy-21, the miraculous “breaking of water” and airflights back to Alaska, and then the journey to Wasilla to give birth prematurely. So she isn’t averse to revealing VERBALLY all sorts of statements about her pregnancy. Why didn’t she simply release her medical records about her pregnancy. The tests, the check-ups, and the birth certificate? It would have laid all this to rest without embroiling her daughter in the issue further.
But she CHOSE to reveal her daughters pregnancy in order to establish her own motherhood. How odd!
The Villagers will STFU and write what they’re told, Terry.
They are not free agents.
Their parent corporations own them body and soul.
