Doesn’t this all sound like an episode of Dr. Phil gone wild rather than a presidential campaign?
Whatever the personal angle in all of this, the public interest question ought to be asked whether or not Palin was using the power of her office to settle a personal score, and whether said actions constituted a misuse of public funds, resources or otherwise distracted from the duties of her office and those of her employees involved in the ensuing mess.
Isn’t this about as basic a vetting question as you get in a Veep selection process?
"Are you currently or have you ever been involved in a criminal and/or civil investigation of wrongdoing? Do you have any depositions forthcoming in any legal matters? Have ethics questions arisen during your tenure in elected office which resulted in any investigative matter being opened? If so, please describe."
I mean, honestly, any vetting process at all should have uncovered something this basic, shouldn’t it? If, in fact, there was any vetting process other than "she’s my soulmate, let’s pick her."
And if John McCain and his staff are so sloppy that they missed something that has been all over the evening news and newspapers in Alaska? What other corners has McCain been cutting that the public ought to know about? What other really obvious details is McCain missing on an array of other important matters?
How can anyone in America trust McCain’s judgment when he didn’t even bother to do basic homework on something as important as selecting his VP candidate?

If McSame knew how to use the internet maybe he could have found this stuff out himself!
But then again why waste time vetting her ,she’s an evangelical ,she must be clean!!!
How can McCain’s judgement not be trusted? He was a POW.
From what I’ve read/seen, the tips line was opened about 8/15, following Palin’s press conference on 8/13 where she tried to walk back her earlier lies about pressuring the Commissioner she later fired. That press conference came about after the tapes pertaining to the firing surfaced.
Next point – the investigator who the bipartisan legislative committee appointed has a contract which runs through 10/31. In other words, he has to complete his investigation and get his report out by 10/31.
Next point – part of his investigation is expected to involve a deposition of Palin. (Remember Bill Gates’ video dep during the Microsoft antitrust case, where he couldn’t remember squat?)
Morning Christy
I am suffering through a really really balanced panel discussion hosted by Politico & Pioneer Press.
with Tucker Carlson, Peggy Noonan, Mark Halperin, John Harris, someone I don’t think has said a word, and Arianna Huffington
Mark Halperin, when asked what should journalists should ask Palin, replied:
The questions that McCain obviously hasn’t.
McCain is actually pulling a brilliant political double somersault with a half twist:
Palin will be forced to withdraw within two weeks,
her critics will be labelled as anti-feminist,
McCain picks Lieberman as her replacement,
and the right wing will have to suck on it.
Call it McCainievellian.
Christy,
There are also the questions about Palin’s judgment in her first choice to replace the Public Safety Commissioner she fired. Seems her first choice had a substantiated sexual harassment complaint (and was issued a letter of reprimand) that he initially tried to deny. He lasted all of two weeks on the job.
From what I understand, that deposition is scheduled to take place within the next couple of weeks. Either they didn’t ask about this — or they did and dismissed it as a non-issue for some reason. Either way, it’s just bizarre.
From reading the family dirty laundry details in the Wash. Post story, I would like to know why the brother in law was never charged with a crime? Don’t they have laws against wife beating and child abuse in Alaska? As far as I can see, the brother in law is still employed with the state. Why isn’t he in jail?
yes Mark Halperin said that
Thanks for pulling all this information together, Christy. What conclusion can anyone come to other than that, in his first big demonstration of what kind of judgment he would demonstrate as President, John McCain crashed, yet again.
Straight Crash Express
Palin is McCains soulmate??? I thought the soulmate position would be his wifes. Uhoh.
Does this look like someone ready to be a heartbeat away?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kkvq5Rh5VYQ
Palin is only until McCain looks into Putin’s eyes and sees his soul.
Decider II, reporting for duty.
I love describing this as “Dr. Phil gone wild”. The more I look at McCain and his choices (on lots of levels), the crazier he seems.
And I find any prospect of Palin’s actually being VP simply terrifying.
Then there is this
Conservative Ire Pushed McCain From Lieberman
I’d rather not live with the consequences of his hasty mistakes as presdient.
Palin will pull an ‘I don’t recall’ and it’ll all be swept away by the next Rovian headfake.
One of the biggest problems in custody disputes is that they often come down to a whole rash of allegations that are behaviors witnessed by the two adults involved and kids who are terrified to talk about what happened because they have to testify against either their own mother or their own father. They can be very difficult to sort out in the best of circumstances. And when you add in frayed nerves, high emotions, and a high incidence of exaggerated claims in these types of cases, it gets even more difficult.
No idea what happened in this one case, but I have rarely — and I do mean rarely as in I can count them on one hand — been involved in a custody dispute for clients where the issues didn’t result in an all-out war between the divorcing/divorced parties and their families. Honestly, how any lawyer keeps doing domestic cases without utterly losing their mind is beyond me — it was really depressing, difficult work, which is why I most often worked as a guardian ad litem advocating for the kids in those cases, whose voices far too often got drowned out in all the shouting.
from the Post story:

If she listened to this man threaten murder, why didn’t she call 911? Why is it in an email after the fact?
I don’t get it.
me too!
add to that McCain’s health and age and …
John McCain, in his first television interview since his shocking vice presidential pick, said that he saw in Sarah Palin “a partner and a soul mate.”
psssstt – Johnny Boy -
Do Not Piss Off The Beer Goddess.
you’re welcome.
I haven’t read anything on that either. Maybe Mrs. Palin’s sister is lying.
Again, Gustav has been a blessing for McCane.
Oh, and do watch the YouTube — the news report is really devastating, and it was out there for the watching by the McCain camp well before Palin was selected. Really sloppy vetting, I have to say.
A) incredibly lazy
B) so sure of their ability to steal it just doesn’t matter to them
C) so sure the msm won’t touch anything remotely negative about the dynamic duo
D) kinda stupid
Palin herself says in an email she heard the brother in law threaten murder.
I had the exact same reaction to that quote, jayt. *g*
McCain is Bush without the staff support that got Bush through the first election. He has never been anything more than a advertising phenomenon, from the time he got Cindy to buy him a seat in Congress and then carpet bag Goldwater’s Senate seat. The Pukes have mastered the art of electing nobodies, because they understand that the great unwashed think politics is something separate from their real lives, and so they vote the way they buy soap or automobiles — they vote on what they are sold. McCain looked like something that could be sold, and had it not been for the shoddy goods delivered in the form of Bush, he might have had a chance.
McCain lost the MSM with the Palin gambit. Cokie’s jealous that she wasn’t picked; Gloria, too. Even Andrea Mitchell would make a better candidate and knows it.
ayfkm ? she is being liar
Elliot – just in case you haven’t seen it
Certainly not. Looks like someone telling a lie and knowing she shouldn’t be doing so.
They knew it and didn’t care. Mrs. Greenspan was telling us moments after the announcment that Palin was under investigation and that it could be explained away.
Cindy did not win the ms Buffalo chip contest
Tried looking at the YouTube video and could only stomach about 50 sec.
Pailn brings back childhood memories of an infamous substitute teacher. She was one of those who was a “local”, was always available but who was not qualified (through education or temperament) to be a fulltime teacher.
Problem was, she thought she was the real deal and used her time in the classroom as a power trip and seemingly as a way to torture children. (She had the same annoying voice as Palin).
Every time that sub showed up, there would be a rash of tummy aches and visits to the nurse, calls to parents.
Watching Palin makes me feel queasy again.
Oh that’s a good one! thanks.
I had a conversation with a senior, rational, moderate Republican last night and she was baffled by McCain’s choice. She was deeply concerned about McCain’s age and health, since they are close, and what would happen if Palin took over with no experience.
My wife is in the same business — family law. She always tried to get the parties to settle out of court, exactly for the reasons you describe. Now she mostly mediates.
There’s a link in my piece to a Jonathon Alter bit of analysis — he is not complimentary. And Joe Klein all but says McCain is an incompetent, sloppily-reasoned buffoon here. (While mocking Bill Kristol. I swear, the pundit world has been turned topsy-turvy.)
Vetting implies caring. THEY DON’T CARE!
It’s all a game to them. They want high offices occupied by people who are easily manipulated by the lobbying elites and the corporations that run this country.
Uncorrupted, intelligent people occupying the White House?
Banish the thought.
“Are you currently or have you ever been involved in a criminal and/or civil investigation of wrongdoing? Do you have any depositions forthcoming in any legal matters? Have ethics questions arisen during your tenure in elected office which resulted in any investigative matter being opened? If so, please describe.”
You’d think they would’ve thought of this. I mean even doing a rough brainstorm on the back of an envelope, you’d think someone would’ve said, OK, criminal history? Any problems, involvelments in any indictments, lawsuits, scandals, what have you?
Honestly, how any lawyer keeps doing domestic cases without utterly losing their mind is beyond me — it was really depressing, difficult work,
What – you don’t miss the 1:00 A.M. phone calls with “He’s drunk, he’s on my porch, banging on the door! What happened to my Restraining Order?”
I ended up getting an unlisted home number. I lasted about a year doing *both* Family Law and Crim Law.
Crim Law yields a much better breed of clients. In Family Law you see good people at their worst, in Crim – vice versa, in general.
imo and ymmv.
I talked to TRex the other day, and he was comparing her to the Harry Potter character, Delores Umbridge. Thought that was hilarious…and rather apt.
Of course, they may have “asked her” (as opposed to looking into her record themselves) and she answered the way she has: no, it’s cool, I look forward to you looking into my record, because I haven’t done anything wrong.
Not really bizarre, if you take a couple things into consideration:
– They don’t grok the internet. Really.
They thought if they picked somebody who was a relative nobody from a place that’s remote from the rest of the continental U.S., they’d be able to slip it by us. But we can “travel” anywhere now, because of the internet, and we can find all sorts of details they figured would be inaccessible to us. They still live in a Drudge Report world, in which political content only gets leaked by them, capice?
– They got the blessing of high-ranking fundamentalists who also don’t grok the internet.
She’s got five kids and kept a Down’s baby, shoots guns, loves drilling for domestic oil (Big Oil, too), spouts creationist and anti-abortion rhetoric and is easy on the eyes, too? Well shucks, she’s a gift from the Lord above!! That’s all we need to know, she’s got our blessings!!
Makes perfect sense. Palin got all the vetting that shallow, corporatist morons need from the Monica Goodling of the Veep’s office. They don’t want anybody too smart, only smart enough to fall in line and do what she’s told. If she doesn’t know what the vice president does, even better deal — the vice president does what the lobbyists tell the veep to do.
Bonus: she’ll shut everybody up about Obama, because they’ll be speechless at the choice. That part didn’t need much vetting at all.
Wasn’t the child who was alledgedly tasered actually from a previous marriage and a step child of the police officer.
Will the corporate MSM report the sloppy vetting of an anti-choice, creationist, cheerleader to be VP? By and large the village elders are treating this cynical choice as “legitimate”. OT, today it’s McCain that has stolen the initiative and is in the process of defining Palin. When will the Dems learn that they have to define their opponents before it’s too late.
The legislature should insist her upcoming deposition be videotaped.
I,m glad McSame chose Palin ,he pretty much sealed his fate with that choice he’s gonna lose!!!!!
Something else starting to hit the fan – over at the Great Orange Satan, they’re looking at possible connections between Palin and the AIP, a secessionist political party. One AIP official indicated, some time back, that she was a member when she was elected mayor of Wasilla, but so far it hasn’t been proven.
That’s something else that McCain’s people should have found out first.
Re Soulmate: McCain is hoping to get into beauty queen heaven where women’s bodies never sag.
Maybe we should let the convention go ahead and nominate Palin before our “vetting” gets her knocked off the ticket. And we Joe the Schmoe for VP pick. After she is nominated we can ‘vet’ her.
Just thinking out loud…
Hmmmm…I don’t know. Although, as a matter of personal opinion, I’m not a fan of anyone being tasered in the home. Especially not children of any parentage. Just so ya know… *g*
Another question is why wasn’t it reported that a kid got tasered when it happened?
McCain’s thought process: She’s hot. I’m hot. People will love us! Besides, lobbyists run everything so what could possibly go wrong?
she passed the damn TB test, and there were no outstanding traffic tickets, you hippies shut up ! :D
The only thing Republicans care about is winning elections and then dividing the spoils amongst themselves. When will the American electorate figure this out? When will the American electorate get tired of being screwed by the Republicans ideology of avarice and greed?
omg jayt
You aren’t saying your attitude is
“take two punches and call me in the morning” are you?
Any rational person can see that McCain made a huge error in choosing Palin. The question now becomes whether he will acknowledge his error. Probably the strongest running theme in the W years has been a steadfast refusal ever to admit even the hint of a possibility that perhaps he was a teensy bit wrong. The “maverick” McCain of 2000 probably would step up, admit his mistake, change to Huckabee and move on. Since he now is completely in the hands of Turdblossom, that will never happen. She will only be dismissed from the ticket if she actually is indicted and then that will be accompanied by a loud “who could have seen”. KKKarl is still busy creating reality for us.
This also explains why they think she has foreign policy experience being pretty close to Russia.
I do too. I’m pretty close to Canada.
Exactly. Why was a criminal complaint ever filed against this brother in law.
Yes, if we were electing a Ms. Grizzly Adams, she’d be up there in the running, wouldn’t she? But, last I checked, being able to field dress a deer is a survival skill that really has nothing to do with essential knowledge for governing. I can field dress game, too, thanks to growing up with a dad who taught me how to hunt in case I needed to know for survival — but that doesn’t qualify me to make national security decisions. It just makes me a decent shot.
that should be “never” filed.
Don’t count KKKarl Rove out and “assume” Jet-Boy will lose. Fatal mistake.
Here’s the vetting process, in full –
She’s not a Jew like Lieberman (McCain’s first choice), but a Good Christchun Fundie Gal, personally approved by Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention:
Are there no adults left in the Republic Party to step in and say, for the good of the Party and the Nation, “no”?
I do know that the police supervisor who got fired looked into the allegations from Palin and did not find enough merit in them to warrant a firing. So there’s clearly a bit of back and forth there. Like I said, these cases are rarely black and white — and sifting through all the grey is a royal pain in the ass. How lovely that we’ll all get to do so publicly in this case, eh? The poor kids caught in the middle of this get to now have the entire nation peeping into this little window into their family’s business. UGH.
Ding! Why change what’s worked so well during the last eight years? :-(
Palin’s most important qualification seems to be that she can stand next to McCain without looking down at him.
Actually I am not a fan of children being tasered anyplace. *g*
and I had enchilada suiza for dinner last night . . .hello Mexico Ambassadorship !
Because, after all, praying correctly is the only important qualification.
likewise, Christy.
water like a waterfall pouring over the walls/nonlevees in SW NOLA says MSNBC
no, I always told ‘em to call the police, because really, I never signed up to show up and physically handle angry drunks.
I always took the calls, but I dreaded weekends.
Take a look in your local telephone books – Yellow Pages and regular – you’re not gonna see home numbers in the regular phone books for the attorneys advertising Family Law in the Yellow Pages.
why is Richard Land getting any cred on who should be veep or prez for that matter?
See my #5. The sly old fox is three steps ahead of us.
By criticizing Plain, we’re all falling into his cleaver trap.
Or maybe McCain is just out of his depth running a campaign,
much less running a country. Pay no attention to that man behind the …
and she will have to leave the campaign trail to be deposed in the investigation. this appears to be the worst PR mistake of the year, however, I don’t discount the Rovians’ ability to turn her into a heroine for family and country.
Prisoner Of Wingers
oh, OK
I’m a little sensitive about that stuff
Remember that Rove was pushin’ Romney, the Bush family choice… maybe there’s a floor fight brewin’ even as we speak….
The poor kids caught in the middle of this get to now have the entire nation peeping into this little window into their family’s business. UGH.
And that’s why I think the issues highlighted in this post are the best ones for going after Palin. When shown a few pictures from the “whose baby is it?” controversy, my 17 year old daughter immediately decided the baby is the teenager’s but just as quickly got very upset that people are looking into it. Palin’s teenage daughter now is a victim no matter how this turns out and no matter who is the mother of the baby.
I hope she officially becomes the VP nominee before she quits. She can be remembered as the Republic Eagleton.
Yes of course !! How could I forget about Rovian politics?
hey Christy.
You’re a lawyer as am I. It looks like me go through a far more thorough “vetting” to get our licenses than McCain put this woman through.
typo alert:
looks like WE. Not “me”.
heh, we all are POW’s
How did the Republicans vet Palin?
They did a search of Google images.
That picture of Palin holding a rifle came up.
They knew they had their running mate.
Their motto is: Keep it simple, stupid.
Let’s not forget Karl still has Diebold in his pocket.
can’t say that enough.
If Rove’s behind this, the choice of Palin might not be just a Hail Mary to keep the election within a couple point margin.
He might actually have known a lot more about her, and chosen her as a poison pill, of sorts.
You see, McCain’s campaign was being held hostage by the fundies; since McCain’s visit to Michigan, the fundies had been saying they would refuse to vote for McCain unless their Huck got either the veep nod or a sizable role at the RNC convention (probably included the platform process). McCain cannot win without the fundies, so they had to do something.
But the crowd outside Invesco Field and the reaction to the DNC convention earlier in the week made it all too clear that the election was tanked for McCain, unless they pulled the Hail Mary, changed the subject AND salvaged the fundie vote.
So they call Palin — and I’ll bet she got the call midday on Thursday, with just enough time to pack and get on the plane for Dayton.
Where’s the poison pill? If Rove actually knew enough about her, he’s already planned for her to have to exit the race because of some personal problem(s); the fundies will be unable to regroup and force another candidate on them inside the tight window of time (let’s say October 1-November 4), cutting them out of the decision making process. And if Palin has to exit because of scandal, so much the better as it discredits the fundies’ leadership and forces them to shut the hell up to save face. They won’t be able to backpedal and throw behind Obama at risk of looking foolish.
Yep! If you have the presence of mind to jump in your vehicle and go over there to witness this argument “through a window,” then you should have the sense to call the police if you truly think he’s threatening and will turn violent any minute. Unless of course you don’t want to involve your family in a domestic abuse scandal before you assess the damages to your own reputation. If there were any real charges, she should have charged them. If there was probable cause, like using a taser on a child for entertainment, pursue the case. Otherwise, you are abusing your power. The question remains, if one will abuse their power as governor of Alaska, do you really want to reward them with more power?
So the party that has griped and moaned for decades about quotas and affirmative action leading to unqualified beating out more qualified people are now crowing about this political maneuver.
Amazing.
-G
good point.
I think applicants for a new apartment are more thoroughly vetted.
Who is looking at whom?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RN5xbWtNSU
Mr Conservative Viguery (Richard?) was on Ed Schultz Friday morning and he basically said that the religious conservatives got what they asked for.
Those were always just talking points to win the next election anyway.
You may be correct but this scenario is too Rovian even for Rove, If the neocons wanted Romney badly enough they would just take McCain for a limo ride and tell him it’s Romney, or else…
Brilliantly cogent assessment.
Gen. Baptiste was saying that would happen.
Yep, that’s the buzz I’ve heard.
And, who needs a president who is such a spoil sport that he’ll shoot himself in the foot if he doesn’t get his way? Truly adolescent behavior. Oh, yeah? Well, watch this.
NPR had a story on this morning talking about how up on the oil industry Palin was and that she was very pro-drilling. But that she was a maverick because she had taken the oil industry on increasing royalty payments from them. They sought to portray this as sometimes she was for big oil and sometimes not. The truth is Alaska is addicted to oil revenues and can’t function without them. So someone like Palin wants as much development as possible and to get as big a cut as possible. There is nothing contradictory or mavericky about this. In the lower 48, we call this greed.
In any case, NPR with a report like this is trying to push the meme that Palin is some kind of oil industry expert, therefore with qualifications, therefore not a bone ass stupid choice for VP.
Re: the “Who da Baby Mommy?” issue…
If you really want access to all of the available information online to ascertain whether Trig is actually Sarah’s child, or her daughter, Bristol’s child, most everything you need to draw your own conclusions is available for your personal review in the links provided by me in this thread:
http://firedoglake.com/2008/09…..g-swim-13/
Would the Governor choose a “family physician” – an MD (rather than an OBGYN) as her personal doctor? Is it just a coincidence, that this doctor, Cathy Baldwin-Johnson, is also the head of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) for the Matanuska Susitna Borough?
Feel free to use your own powers of deduction, rather than simply believing what you are told.
Nope, we’ll have to disagree. Just need to look at the map of the primary results in Michigan to see Romney as veep was a losing proposition. Romney took a big chunk of the state, but McCain took fundie country here.
That same territory would have bailed out on McCain if he didn’t pick a fundie since they didn’t want Romney to begin with.
This entire Palin debacle wasn’t to win the election, but to retain the base so that they’d have a crack at bringing it close. Mitt couldn’t do that for them.
Remember when Bush was touted as the “Energy President”? Hey, now they have an “Energy VP” and she’s cute and seems to dig old farts. What’s not too like?
watching the maria bartoromo interview, when Palin is talking about the oil industry in her state, she sounds smart.
I want someone to ask her about pakistan.
Shit ,a military helicopter just flew over my house .I knew I shouldn’t have logged on to this site!!!
Senator Kerry nailed it for all of us yesterday:
I would like someone to ask her what are the problems faced by america’s cities
Get used to it.
I have never thought that McCain would accept Romney. He’s too tall, handsome and he made his own fortune.
The younger McCain might have liked having a Mittster along as a wingman — just to pick off the extras. The older McCain would not be to tolerate the today’s contrasts between them.
Explain it to me like I’m a three year old.
This entire Palin debacle wasn’t to win the election, but to retain the base so that they’d have a crack at bringing it close. Mitt couldn’t do that for them.
I always thought the race was to get a win, not come close. I do understand regaining strength in a base, but how does coming close help?
Richard Land: Ya gotta pick an evangelical!
McCain: I pick Sarah Palin, all you base are belong to us.
-G
is it just me, or does the national media seem to be rather blatantly rooting for Gustav in today’s Man vs. Nature contest?
oooh pick me !
D-I-E-B-O-L-D
How bout this, McCain is a sacrificial lamp and they can’t wait to get Barak in office so the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” can really do it’s stuff.
I don’t know there is a lot to be smart about. Her position is drill all you can and keep those jobs and royalties coming. Global warming gets in the way? Forget about it. The environment? Screw it. When Alaska runs out of oil and gas the whole place is going to dry up and blow away.
I don’t find this development model smart at all. And Maria Bartiromo’s participation is another strong indication of an absence of smarts in any discussion.
think of it as “Close Enough for Diebold”.
crap, I knew I was typing too slowly.
Coke or Pepsi?
Laura McGann, Washington Monthly:
Early in her tenure as mayor, the city council threatened to recall her over accusations that she fired the city’s police chief, Irl Stambaugh, and the library director, Mary Ellen Emmons, without warning. She accused them in a letter saying: “I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment …” (The Anchorage Daily News, via nexis)
http://www.washingtonindepende…..-candidate
Can there be any doubt that she would continue the corrupt hiring practices of the Bush administration?
McShame indicated that it was time to take off the Rethug hats and put on American hats
1. why then is everyone saying what a great leader McShame 7 Palin are?
2. Aren’t those hats nailed on
I wasn’t trying to be snarky. Just didn’t understand. That line was from Phildelphia, and I always liked it.
You’re saying they think they will have more room to doom if Obama is president?
I didn’t think you were, I just gave what I see as a plausible answer.
I have to say, that is an intriguing thought.
How they would love to Carterize Obama.
The economy, the shattered reputation, the military in shambles.
See what Obama did! They certainly have the ability to keep up a steady drumbeat of disinformation.
-G
They have to bring the race in certain key states within less than 3%.
They’ve already proven in races past that they can mess with a narrow margin.
I’ll use Michigan again since I know it best, and it’s going to be one of those key states. Here’s how they’ll do it:
– They have a Secretary of state who is a hardcore Republican (had been co-chair of Bush/Cheney campaign in 2004) who has implemented many changes in state under the guise of cost reduction, that interfere with the ability of mostly minority voters to register to vote;
– There is a voter ID law about which the MI-SOS has issued a diktat requiring contest of any photo ID that doesn’t look exactly like the bearer (did you gain/lose weight? change glasses, hair color, hair style since you had the photo for your ID taken? you’re a target);
– While the voter ID law here also allows voting without a photo ID provided an affidavit is signed, the voter must come back within 6 days to confirm their ID with a photo. How many minority voters will do that?
If every affidavit is contested, every non-matching ID is contested, in addition to many new voters thwarted by limited voter registration access, you can whittle down 1-3% of the vote pretty easily.
And then you throw it to a Supreme Court with Alito, Scalia, Thomas and Roberts on board.
Piece of cake, more so than a victory in Iraq.
CalGeorge
Had read about Ms. Sarah and the town librarian but thanks for the cite.
I am really disturbed by the prospect of more governing by “grudge and gouge”.
new post
On Labor Day, a New TV Campaign for the Employee Free Choice Act
Can there be any doubt that she would continue the corrupt hiring practices of the Bush administration?
Well, it does appear that she can move right to the AP classes in “Corruption and Cover-up, GOP-style”, if nothing else.
Thank you! The man isn’t even in charge of his own cell phone, much less a VP selection.
a sacrificial lamp
Ha. If I wasn’t so busy cooking up some grub for a picnic later, I’d do a photoshop of McCain for ya. Something with him with a lampshade on his head?
(btw, do you like potato salad?)
Could some one be sabotaging Mcsame so they can use his choice as VP as a reason he is not qualified to run and then pick a different candiate for Prez at the convention?
anyone watching the cable nets ??
CNN/MSNBC are all levee spills, all the time
Faux – no footage of anything other than loose barges. they are doing everything they can NOT to show the levees – too effin’ funny
Wicked cool back and forth today gotta go catch ya later!!
And even the police will tell you that the one call they fear the most is a domestic dispute.
She abused her power as mayor too. Fired the sheriff and the librarian!
Hi, I’m on my way out but if it hasn’t been mentioned, the release date could hurt the democratic party also. She will cry on tv and say she was just trying to protect her love ones. The news media will swoon even though the guy she fired had nothing to do with her love ones. Never underestimate the power of palin.
– But the problem is that, as far as the GOP and the corporate media are concerned, the truth doesn’t matter at all.
How can you attack Sarah Palin? She has a Down Syndrome child!
They undoubtedly knew about all of this — they just figure they can bullsh8it their way through it, and the media will let them, and they’re probably right.
Come on, all of you guys know this already.
Quit eating white spuds, rice, pasta a few years ago. I made a big batch of sweet potato salad for today!
Come on, Loo Hoo, you know very well you can’t govern a city if you don’t have the full support of the librarian. What are ya pickin’ on Palin for? /s
You have kabuki in your memes.
-G
Yummers. When I do sweet potatos, I use ginger and cinnamon.
Okay, back to political shenanigans and Water water everywhere.
(thanks all for indulging the foodspeak. :))
I thought those levees were designed to withstand a level 3, hasn’t Gustav been downgraded to a 2
You know the hard right winger women are already pointing the way on this. Read several posts yesterday in which they expressed their concern about a working woman with 4 children and special needs infant; they said that one can’t be truly pro-family if they put their family aside for their job, and the veep’s job requires that.
A number of them simply couldn’t understand how she could spend so much time on her current job as governor, cutting into her ability to deal with a special needs child.
Frankly, I’m pretty puzzled about this myself. We have a family member who had a Down’s baby at age 41; the baby was in the hospital for 9 months out of the first 18 months of their life for multiple surgeries, including two heart surgeries. Down’s infants are very likely to have heart problems, as well as a number of other physical challenges. Who’s caring for that baby if mom’s at work full-time and dad’s out in the oil fields?
But this may be one of those Rovian “opportunities”, yes?
According to Wooten, (consider source): the boy was 11. The boy asked and badgered, to see what it would feel like. Wooten relented, set the device on the “test” setting and the young man received his wish.
Not to say whether Wooten’s version is truthful, but it is pausible to those of us who were 11 year old boys, who raised 11 year old boys, who had 11 year old boys as friends and schoolmates. Parapharsing Mark Twain (and taking liberty of 3 years), 11 year old boys don’t mature their brains until they turn 21 or so.
well Dad is now officially a Mr. Mom.
Not this time, too many investigations and trials ahead.

the Company caught stuffing the levees with newspapers feeling just a tad defensive this morning:

My favorite line in that NY Times article is that that Palin was the only person on the list who had no detractors among McCain’s advisors. No one was advocating FOR her; it’s just that everyone else on the list had someone in the room who was a detractor. THIS is how we choose a VP running mate?
no, that was a campaign promise and not reality
So Dobson and the wingnuts were in Minn last week vetting Palin…who wudda thunk?

The Council For National Policy Meets In Minn, Vets Palin
By Max Blumenthal Mon Sep 01, 2008 at 02:48:46 AM EST print story
Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC’s spectacle in Denver, the country’s most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy.
CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul Weyrich. At a secret 2000 meeting of the CNP, George W. Bush promised to nominate only pro-life judges; in 2004, then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told the group, “The destiny of the nation is on the shoulders of the conservative movement.” This year, thanks to Sarah Palin’s selection, the movement may have finally aligned itself behind the campaign of John McCain.
it is now that she’s VP pick

Gustav made landfall 15 miles south of Houma, not NOLA. What NOLA is getting are Cat 1 winds I believe.

This is another distressing legacy of the failed Bush Administration and the Republican Cavalcade of Fools and Incompetents chosen to “ru’n”, as in ruin, the country.
The idea that a person so obviously underqualified to be president, as is Mrs. Palin’ is seriously being considered an “inspired” choice, tells us American standards for president have sunk to new lows.
Let’s face the music.
Republicans can’t DO governing!
Republicans can’t DO Free Enterprise without crashing and taxpayer bailouts.
Republicans can’t DO democracy.
It is time for reason based Americans to shun the entire Republican Party, and to try to start a new, Eisenhower type of Republican Party, with Republicans who place America and the Constitution above petty party affiliations.
For the transitional period, I would urge grown-up Republicans to vote for Barr or Paul, if you yet cannot reconcile yourself to voting for a Democrat, even one who holds the promise to be one of our greatest unifying presidents.
If enough Republicans DO NOT vote Republican this year, the gross malformation that the Republican Party has become, WILL be excised from the body politic. Saving America should be more important than saving your local Republican representative staying in office forever.
Let’s rescue America and the Constitution this November 4th by shunning ALL Republican candidates, across the board.
Let’s declare this Nov. 4th, 2008 a new Independence Day for reasonong and democracy loving Americans. America is better than the bigotry, hate and incompetence that has become the Republican Party in the last 38 years.
God save America. But He doesn’t vote. We do.
So, we need to roto-rooter our arteries?
You’re cracking me up this am. I [heart] Raven.
I may be thin skinned sometimes, but I do love people with brains.
Overtopped, not broken.
“she’s cute and seems to dig old farts.”
Palin does not appear to dig old fart McSame in the butt vetting video. Towards the end as he is (repeatedly) moving in on her, she backs away and turns her head away until she finally gives in to the cheek rub.
He is obviously the kind of man who cannot sense or doesn’t care when a woman is evading physical closeness with him.
But if it truely is the dau’s baby, then it could be used as a blackmail issue over Palin. That would be diastrous for the country.
You brute, you brute, you brute.

It’s time to shrink the Republican Party down to a size where it can be flushed down the toilet.
And no demise could be more fitting for the immoral clump the Republican Party has become.
Is there a law if you see/think you see a crime/know of a crime you are supposed to report it?
Josh Marshall had a really good round up of Palin’s Troopergate.
Basically, the real problem was that these incidents were not reported in real time, but after the marriage fell apart. Which means they may or may not have happened, but they also were inevitably reinterpreted by all parties involved. Start looking into the actual reliability of memory and it’s scary.
He was investigated on 14 claims, 5 were found to be founded and he received a suspension. The real trouble came after Palin was elected and she started trying to have the previous investigation overruled and the ex-in-law fired. When she was rebuffed, she fired the head of the agency.
Even if the guy was a loser, not the way to handle it.
Sheesh, Plunger. I mean time for you to refer this “case” to the Nat’l Enquirer and let them take over. Seriously, they have the resources to investigate this and the progressive blogospher can move on to issues we can actually prove.
I have used my powers of deduction and the pictures you cite in your earlier thread prove nothing. I mean if the Palin’s wanted to cover up Bristol’s alleged pregnancy what the hell are they having an official family photo with Bristol in a tight sweater showing her “pregnancy.” And comparison’s of Palin’s 1st pregnancy and 5th pregnancy proves nothing. Not all pregnancies are equal, esp if Trig was a preemie.
Finally, the choice of doctors is also meaningless.First, what evidence do you provide that Baldwin Johnson was Palin’s attending physician for the birth? Please provide link. And what is the significance of the “coincidence” of Dr. Baldwin-Johnson being Palin’s family physician and the fact that she’s the head of the local sexual assault response team. Huh? In Baldin-Johnson’s bio she was named Family Physician of the Year. Perhaps she was chosen because of her reputation. Yes, I agree that it is unusual that a family physician would not refer a pregnant patient to an OB/GYN but you have not provided evidence that Baldwin Johnson was the attending physician for the birth. The fact that she is no longer at Mat Su Hospital as you cite in your linked thread alos means nothing. So she left? Perhaps her practice is now affiliated with a different hospital network. Happens all the time.
Personally, these things strike me as small potatoes. My goodness, McCain was one of the Keating 5. Americans, by and large don’t care about these things, especially if it turns out her brother in law was in truth a violent thug. It’s inappropriate, but geez, the current Vice President, part of a twice elected ticket, lied straight faced to the entire nation over and over and over leading the nation to war.
What was suprisingly unvetted given McCain’s well documented interest in Iraq and global climate change was Palin’s abject absence of understanding, seemingly complete lack of curiosity, and uninformed and ambiguous at best position about the first and her anachronistic ignorance about the latter.
