This entire Palin selection is a Rovian head fake. It was designed by Rove to accomplish two goals. First and foremost, to take ALL of the air out of the media that the Obama camp was destined to carry into the GOP convention. It did that, in spades. The echo just simply stopped. The news cycle yesterday was absent of any analysis or follow-through on Obama’s speech…itself a major coup for Rove. It’s as though the entire media machine stopped speaking of anything “Democratic,” in unison.

Secondly, the (apparent) selection of Palin throws a bone to the Puma’s and to women generally…one that McCain doesn’t have to necessarily follow through with, but made for a nice (disingenuous) photo-op.

Third; they’re just not that stupid not to have known about the controversy – and her familial requirements and responsibilities (Downs Syndrome newborn to care for). In short, their unbelievable choice is in fact, unbelievable…”a straw-woman.”

By the time the convention occurs, news will come out that the GOP’s own investigators have determined that, while no proof of wrong doing exists, the mere investigation of it is a distraction that the GOP simply cannot afford so close to the election. As such, the announcement that either Lieberman or Romney have become McCain’s choice will come as a massive relief to the GOP base, and capture the entire news cycle for weeks to come. If Rove thought it would be impossible for a McCain/Lieberman ticket to succeed without some form of trickery, he would have dreamed this up, making Lieberman look good by comparison. All of the push-back will already be out of the system.

He’s pulled these same stunts in the past – like putting Bernie Kerik’s name into nomination only to pull him and install Chertoff as Homeland Security Dictator. Remember when the name of Harriet Miers was put forward for a Supreme Court position? Remember? A fire storm of push back erupted, only to be followed by the swift and easy confirmation of Roberts, who looked like a breath of fresh air BY COMPARISON. THEY ARE GAMING YOU!

What about the 3 month case of Mono that the daughter had, presumably from February to May…was she just hanging out having sex while sick? As I recall, Mono is very contagious…had Levi already been exposed to the virus?

What I want to know is, the daughter is the one who seems to always be carrying the baby around. So if she now marries and starts her own family, who will raise Sarah’s baby? That was my first thought as well. My second thought is that Gov. Palin has five kids, the newest a baby with Downs, a 19 year old son on his way to Iraq and now a pregnant child (yes, at 17, she is still a child in an emotional turmoil). When my membranes ruptured when I was 7 months pregnant, neither the doctor (on the phone) nor I knew whether it was amniotic fluid or urine until I went to the hospital to get checked out. At the hospital the nurse told me that in about 50& of the cases it is urine.

Sarah Palin was in Dallas when this happened to her. How did her doctor in Alaska diagnose her over the phone? Sarah never mentions seeing a doctor in Dallas. Why rush home to Alaska if there’s a 50% chance the fluid is urine?

What reputable doctor would suggest that a women with ruptured membranes subject herself and her fetus to two long flights and pressure changes? It’s a wonder they both survived.

If I were a 17 year old teenage daughter or her boyfriend…and my Mom had just given birth to a baby with Downs Syndrome I would be very averse to having unprotected sex, if I had sex at all. If the daughter was present during the delivery it might turn her off all sex for awhile.

Odd…in the Palin family it seems that it actually STIMULATED the daughters sex-drive.

Now if the daughter was having sex BEFORE the birth, it seems that she didn’t acquire any of the critical information about the risks of pregnancy. Did Palin teach her kid anything about the risks of unprotected sexual activity? HIV? Condoms? The right wing argues that teaching kids about sex should be a “families responsibility”.

Again what is so bizarre about this new twist to the story is the serendipitous timing. I knew Alaska was an amazing place. I just never realized how amazing.

For the last 20 years, there’s been an additional test that can be done much earlier in pregnancy to check for genetic abnormalities. My two children are 20 & 22, and I had it done with them. It’s called chorionic villae sampling [CVS]. As with amnio, there’s a risk of miscarriage, but since it’s done MUCH earlier in the pregnancy, if you choose to terminate, you aren’t 4+ months pregnant — with all that entails.

Regarding the “Rovian head fake” theory proposed by plunger and others, that occurred to me as well. They name Palin, all shit breaks loose, then they slip in their real choice, be it Leiberman or whoever.

But I think it is unlikely, for the following reason:

Either (a) Palin would be in on the plan, which would mean sacrificing herself to ridicule and disgrace, probably ending her political career; or (b) she would not, meaning Rove deliberately set her up and threw her under the bus.

I think Palin or any up-and-coming politician would go along with the (a) scenario — too much ego. But (b) seems even less likely, because Palin’s base, the fundies, would revolt and split the Republican party in two.

1. Where is your evidence that Dr. Cathy Baldwin-Johnson was the attending M.D.? Your link provides a bio no evidence that she’s Palin’s doctor.

2. So what if Baldwin-Johnson heads up the area’s sexual abuse response team? It’s not as if that is her sole practice. It’s a community service effort to train clinicians in the community. My child’s former pediatrician also did similar work in a community I used to live in. But her primary practice was a private pediatric practice.

FYI–whoever said that Alaska is small enough that doctors have multiple skills and multiple jobs is correct.

The doctor that delivered Trig (which is the one you mentioned) is also the doctor that has delivered many babies in the Valley for many years. She also happens to be an expert on child abuse as are many other doctors in Alaska.

Obama’s right on this one. It’s a not a so unusual event. The concern is Sarah Palin’s fittness for the office. The problem is not her daughter or her newborn.
