mccaingryus1.thumbnail.jpgJohn McCain was a POW. Did you know that? He apparently served his time in a cell getting "not tortured" (by current definitions anyhow) by his North Vietnamese captors, and their mentors from the old Soviet Union and Cuba. It’s an amazing story, one worth hearing, and I’m sure if you ask St. John nicely, he’ll reluctantly tell you of his trials and little personal triumphs in Hanoi especially if you ask really really really really nicely.

Veterans like McCain often say that they served to protect the American "way of life", which until this administration meant protecting the Constitution (that pesky "support and defend" thing) and often giving their lives to ensure that the country they made the ultimate sacrifice for was the same for their children as it was for them. So why is the Veteran POW honorable-reticent-hero McCain so willing to watch the violation of the civil liberties of Americans in Minnesota? His reticence to discuss this? Or to assert (or insert) himself into this situation certainly sends a chilling message to Americans who are paying attention. He doesn’t care if Americans are arrested for exercising their Constitutional Rights, despite the flag pin on his lapel… especially if they hold opposing political viewpoints, now that’s bipartisanship for you!

But he was a POW.

And he’s touring the emergency facilities on the Gulf in the path of Gustav… which is his campaign event for the day…

And he was a POW.

Sara Palin was a mayor of a town in Alaska the size of Mayberry, and is uniquely qualified to be VP of the Mount Pilot Chamber of Commerce if nothing else.

But he was a POW.

Now he’s just wishing (and hoping) that every one in America remembers he was a POW.

John needs a lot of naps in the path of Gustav, it’s a Maverick-y way to handle a crisis after all, the Politics of Weather…

Did I mention that he was a POW? He’s wishing for Ronald Reagan to come back from the grave to resurrect his candidacy, because Sara Palin ain’t doing it for anyone but the "base" and the 250 members of PUMA who somehow seem to make it onto the talking head shows with their blonde spokesbimbo…

Americans arrested without cause, war without end, cities devastated by storms, terrorists roaming free and encouraged by this administration’s policies, an economy in shambles, middle-class Louisiana residents who make less than five-million dollars a year will have him lead the republicans in party hats (who make less that five million a year too) from the convention become a human levee on the edge of Lake Ponchartrain (and completely screw up security and evacuation protocols in the city of New Orleans)…what a guy!

John McCain, POW. Did I mention that? A maverick practitioner of the Politics of Whatever.
