Woot !
g’evening pups
Mercy, I gotta get up at four AM and go to work.
Gnite.
you gotta work on the holiday busted? g’nite
I’m working tomorrow too. Three times as much workload because everyone else is off except one other to split the whole load with me. A 10hr day isn’t out of the question.
Very nice song, btw.
Suzanne!
Love the tune
thanks – and dang, that bites muzzy. at least you have a workmate and are not expected to do it all by your lonesome
thanks newton – i figured we all could use a little mercy tonight
Night Busted. Think I will head out as well. Take care all and enjoy the music.

Katrina hit and we all were shocked and saddened. We expected to be able to pick up our hearts and move on. Build back the levees. Build back the city, the coast, the life that was hanging by a sliver. But somehow our hopes have not been realized and our souls are truncated. We lost the battle for what should have been. We are dismayed. We are fools.

It is hard to believe this is happening again….. three years ago Phoenix took in thousands of refugees from NOLA….. Our local progressive radio station had a drive for new goods for those newly arrived, many with only the clothes on their backs….
Very conflicted with no shelters available….. what do people do who cannot afford a place to stay? Did the buses take them to shelters somewhere else?
Time for this firepup to get some sleep. Night all!

240 people came to Austin TX tonight. Some have been taken to nursing homes and hospitals, but the remainder are spending the night at the convention center. They are asking people to volunteer to adopt a family for a week or two.
Lizards gone wild.
i saw on my local oregon news a family of 6 that had to walk 5 miles to the bus – they did not have a ride and on foot was the only way they had to get there to evacuate.
i worry about those frail and elderly who can not walk to the buses.

Anybody in the Twin Cities for the RNC going to the Party for Change? I’d love to meet some FDLers!
Huge hugs to you, mary. And to your parents and siblings.
I think they ended up all over the country. Quite a few ended up here, which is just about as far away as it gets.
Nite dear Betsy
John McCain, a very dirty old man.
I know that Madmommie and her kids are safe. I hope they will be unafraid in the future. I hope this for all of us.
Thank you, Suzanne. What an awesome video. The voice, the poetry, the visuals. To God’s ear, tonight.
I too have that fear….. many of the frail are no longer with us…… the big issue is that they provided buses NOW and also allowed people to take their pets with them…
I also have an issue with accusing people of looting….. IF you are white, you were obtaining supplies and if you were a person of color…. you were looting….
Racial profiling is hard work.
What’s on my mind?
I’m frustrated! I live in Wasilla, technically speaking. I live closer to Palmer, a real town, as opposed to the fairly generic development sprawl one, like Wasilla.
But, here and at a couple of other blogs, I’ve found myself actually having to defend Wasilla, and Sarah Palin, as much as I despise Wasilla, and feel Palin totally unfit to be Vce President, barely fit to be our governor.
I realize people Outside misunderstand Alaska, the most different of our states. But for those of us who have been giving thousands of hours to advance progressive causes, ideas, candidates and organizations here, every time we see our people mischaracterized, it pisses us off.
A lot. I predicted this would happen, soon after McCain picked Sarah.

ET I was very worried that Mittens would be chosen…. Mitt nearly won the primary here and I thought our chances of making any changes here would be wiped out with a McCain/Mitt ticket…. The religious right doesn’t have a big presence here, more the Ron Paul libertarians……
Hadn’t thought of that but you are correctomundo.
Alright…. heading out to bed….. have a nice travel book to ready… hmmm …A Year in Provence…. Nite everyone
OMG, Suz. We could use some mercy now. Thanks.

Oh, Mary. I know you love NOLA. This is heartwrenching for all of us. Can’t even begin to imagine what it is for you.
Love you, Mary.
Edward Teller – hopefully the silver lining is that this will draw a spotlight on people and communities in AK where progressives can get face time. Maybe an unrealistic stretch, but there’s definitely a chance. btw, is a “fish picker” a familiar term in AK, and if so, does it have a pejorative meaning ?
I offered up my home last time with the Department of Homeland Security, and never heard a word back. I did stipulate that I would take no felons…
Wow… she is good. So grounded and strong. Thanks.
g’nite katymine
I have been working for a new and young website design company. Most of the people have I built sites for have been nice and some have been cool. There is this one dude who is strange and unconscious. When I spoke with him he had a real time instant message video set up. As we were talking I glanced away. When I glanced back he appeared nude. Now, I couldn’t see his weewee or anything. He was sitting in a chair in front of the computer. I think he had on shorts and had taken off his shirt. I decided to ignore the sumbitch. Here is the kicker. He has a business buying and selling forclosed homes. The name of it is…… wait for it……windowpane.com. Jeebus. Jeebus fuckin’ christ on a stick.
thanks loohoo
libbylib, i just love her voice
they just reported that water was lapping over Lake Pontchartrain causeway…. after reading the post over a digby about the sloppy building of the levees….. Would a repeat of the drowning of NOLA be bad or good for the GOP?
fuck — what station? cnn?
good for the GOP–they would blame it on Obama
Man, what a night, I played a gig and actually got that crazy woman from AK off my mind for awhile.
To think that I will have to put up with her voice another day is almost too much to take, let alone two months, or, perish the thought, four years!
Why didn’t McInsane stick to his guns with Lieberman>
what kinda gig?
That is the funniest! Sarah cannot stand the touch of McSame.
Where are they?
Who cares? I just hope everyone is safe. Let the GOP try to make political hay on the backs of the hurricane victims.
At this point, it ought to be bad. Even with a properly let contract, they should have rebuilt the most hazardous structures by now.
I’ll add, though, that most of the immediate rebuilding was focused on getting NOLA back to be able to withstand a Category 3 hurricane. If Gustav is worse than that, they could wriggle off the hook. Again.
MSNBC is talking about Lake Ponchartrain sp? right now and showing video of waves lapping on the shore
I am a singer-songwriter-guitarist.
IIRC, Cat 4 or greater were widely discussed in the aftermath of Katrina…
We should have hired the Dutch. They know what they’re doing. And we knew they knew.
The models have all tightened up and that hurricane is heading straight for Lousiana.
They’ll need some good thoughts.

and they will
if they can’t find a way to blame Obama, they will blame the Democratic Congress of the past 2 years
My sister and her husband have had three houses - one at a time - in Sedona. I love the place, and have hiked a lot up on the ridges, and skinny dipped in Oak Creek.
thanks, switching to msnbc
thanks, twinpeaks
Is there any way the Ron Paul supporters will go for Obama?
Yes, they were. As I recall, though, they decided on a phased approach – Cat 3 now, Cat 4 (or better) a few years later. I didn’t understand the rationale, since it’s seems pretty obvious that we could expect more big storms. It may have had something to do with there being a war on that was already draining the treasury, but I honestly don’t recall ever understanding why this approach was chosen.
Anything from the MSM on Blackwater’s presence?
I think Gustav is epic karma coming back to bite the GOP/Bush regime. It connects directly to one of, if not the worst, failures of the Bush Administration (Katrina Response) refreshing the minds of forgetful undecided voter types who wait until the night before the election to decide who to vote for. It also ruins the GOP convention designed to showcase VP candidate Palin and show McCain in his most youthful light.
John Lennon’s “Instant Karma” has been playing in my head all day long.
they are talking about the high police presence down in NO on msnbc – but no mention of private or blackwater
A sobering message from you. Thanks. Not much consolation probably, but you made me stop and want to be more compassionate and reasonable and not in hyper-drive speculation.
So close to home for you and once again, things getting reduced to cartoon-format partisan commentary by each side. You are so much closer to the flesh and blood reality behind the intense media/rumor surreality/hysteria.
We are all so ripe to speculate and characterize … and set off ricocheting lashes and backlashes … and where we end up nobody knows… or where we knew we didn’t want to end up. And, like with family, we can criticize them all we want, but let someone else outside the family try it …
When Bush won a second term, I think collectively all of us progressives went at least low grade “nutty” from the horror … and this roller coaster ride seems endless … we all want serious healing to begin, no new fresh hells … but the ride keeps twisting and rising and falling…
Good luck with it all to you and your dimension of coping.
Maybe. The “real” libertarians aren’t all that taken with Bob Barr, either. In the end, though, libertarians are about hating big government, and we all know that big government and Democrats go together like eggs and bacon./sarcasm
And frankly, Obama hasn’t given them much hope that there will be any meaningful change in the power of the government. He’s ducked every time it’s been up to him to do something as a party leader. He hasn’t been too forceful in declaring that he’d roll back the powers Bush has assumed, either.
MSNBC reported earlier that the Shrub went to Texas to help with the storm.
How will Arbush-doh! help? That pensive look foto op during the flyover did not help last time. JEB’s pump deal did not help. The various outside contractor deals were wasteful and incomplete. The FEMA trailers were a rip off and a gaseous scandal. The speech under the Kleig Lights was no help. Dubya can’t even button his shirt.
I guess the Republicans are right – Republican gubmint is the problem.
I doubt it. They will just stay home and polish their guns.

The most scrutiny on Alaska since the Exxon Valdez. Hopefully, this one ends up on a reef too, but with less toxic after effects.
When Dubya must attend a hurricane meeting, it bores him to no end and he doesn’t undershtand nuthin. That’s why he thought it was ok to pay Brownie a compliment. He don’t know nuthin.
True. I was really disappointed in his FISA vote. Just was wondering if it would be possible that the Paul/Barr/Nader folks would vote with us.

Haven’t seen any of that. Questions about obout the maternity, yes.
honky tonk angels
I know some Paul folk and some Nader folk, and I don’t see much hope. The truth is that they don’t vote that way to be obstreperous. They do it because they don’t see any real hope of things being better with the two parties we have. I suspect that if either candidate demonstrated a real commitment to making this country a functioning constitutional republic again, they’d probably vote for him (or her).
We tossed the last of those guys out of the primary months ago.
The maternity issue IS the attach it references.
well, maybe they have some brush he could clear down there…
Yes, that one’s going to go over really well.
All the lefty’s I know think Bristol is a fine young lady who happens to be caught up in a ruse orchestrated by her sanctimonious mother.
Weren’t the Bush’s (Laurabot and Dubya) just agog over the hilarity that is Desperate Housewives?
I’ve only heard Palin speak when she was introduced the other day with McCain. When she pitches her voice to make a point, she came off to me sort of shrill in the same way Hillary was criticized for her voice during the primary campaign by folks on the right. I wonder if that will not fair well for her when she has to debate Joe Biden?
sorry suzanne, I got behind on the comments because my computer was acting like a seven year old PC with Windows 2000. I guess I owe you a beverage.

ET- Yeah, count on a new “fresh hell” to replace this one, but that damn “schadenfreude” gene in all of us sure does stir it up fast and furiously.
I know quite a few Ron Paul folks, and they are generally strongly pro-gun, fiscal reform, anti-gay, anti abortion, pro-hunting defenseless animals, and pro-military, so Palin is definitely their kind of woman. They would be glad to vote for her while they have no use at all for McCain.
crap – hope it finishs soon :)
They need emergency water, medical, food a rebuild engineering team that does not include USACE. They need a 30 year plan of recovery including rebuild of all levees. All paid for by the organizations that got rich by expanding the shipping lanes and destrying the wetlands that absorb surges.
This is part of global warming and needs to br expressed in environmental as well as human terms. God does not have a thing to do with this. If God wants to make people of color miserable then the idea of God should be as ugly as the Neocons who represent this “Divine” almighty power. Please bring the bolt of lightening.

The most ridiculous thing about the baby or grandbaby meme is that it wa started last winter here in Alaska by a far right enemy of Palin’s.
Once Palin realizes what bloggers are capable of uncovering about a candidate’s life, she is going to wish she never signed on to this campaign. LOL
I love the title of the article. Some day, I’ll have YouTube technology again, but in the meantime, I get the idea. Impulse control gets a little problematic after you reach a certain age …
newt…you’re a hoot!
They did that to “balance” the ticket. Palin, fuckable, McCain, fucked up.
Truth is, I know exactly what Mary is talking about.
Eye Candy, as has been said here and many other places.

I beat you to that one at 104. :-D

Of course, boss.
Yes. In a debate, Biden could take a metaphorical two by four to the seasoned KBH or Liddy and some Republicans would cheer him on.
some elvis and dark chocolate
She’s a looker no doubt, I just couldn’t put up with her squealin.
It’s a classic argument from ignorance – We haven’t seen any proof she was pregnant during that time, so what’s she hiding? Why in the world would she fly back to Alaska after her water broke? Whenever I see an assertion like this, no matter where it comes from, my first instinct is to take a couple of steps back.
I think the fact that the baby was born with Down’s Syndrome suggests strongly that Sarah had the baby, not her daughter. DS is much more common in pregnancies where the woman is over forty.
Then there’s that photographic evidence …
Anyway, enough about the secret alien love child …
Look at the creepy old geezer staring at her bonafides.
If Obama did that to anyone the MSM would have it on all channels.

A couple of threads back, we were discussing the value of the debate between Biden and Palin. I argued that Joe can be gentlemanly and deferential and will leave Palin in a quivering mass.
But if, as argued by others, nobody cares to watch, or are not tuned to the issues in the first place, it would be meaningless. And even if they are watching, they will likely swallow the talking points as given.
My take – the world will watch these debates, and now that Palin is the nominee, there will be even more focus. And this will possibly be the only shot at seeing her actually pressed for an answer to any question.
{ersonnally I admire your candor if everyone was as open and honest as you are the world would be a far far better place to hang out on. (Grammar?)

I agree. The Biden/Palin debate should be exceptionally entertaining and widely viewed.
I thinl her “Big OIl” connects are what he will get from her…four more years of oil policy. Lotsa big bucks. Status Quo.Three new SCOTUS conservatives…watch it gel. It’s so Rovian. SO ANWAR.
I agree with your analysis. I would suggest a good strategy might be for Biden to look straight in to the camera (audience) and ask America the unasked questions the moderators certainly won’t ask on whether Palin is suitable and qualified to assume the office of president, then Palin will have to defend herself without him having directly attacked her.
i am so looking forward to the veep debate
You got that right. Burn baby Burn.

There are a dozen topics Palin will not be able to touch on, due to lack of depth of knowledge to lack of relevant talking points. But when it comes to being able to expand an answer into a policy proposal, or to describe a real-world circumstance, or talk about who she has met and discussed issues with, she will be flat-footed and that will be a stark moment.
Biden needn’t ask her anything. Folks will see the difference.

Joe will do fine with her cause he is a true gentleman
I saw Raul on the Delbert Cruise last January. At the late night jam, he played my Telecaster and did a *perfect* rendition of “Puff the Magic Dragon,” in the style of Roy Orbison. It was hysterically funny.
I got to play “Your Cheatin’ Heart” behind Raul and with Michael Rhodes, the best bass player in Nashville.
Did you see Biden-Obama on 60 minutes? Joe has really pulled his act together since the primary debates. He is acting all refined and statesman-like. It’s a good thing, but I loved the old spunky Biden too.
Actually, I’m watching it as of about five minutes ago.
kewl!
How bout some mana?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4bIHyzaves
dammit, i totally forgot and missed it
Alaska’s a lot more complicated than that, suzanne. Gets back to my “what’s on your mind” comment at the top. Palin ascended from local to statewide through her 2002-2003 complaints when she was chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Pipeline Commission. The job was given her by Gov. Murkowski, as it was a position in which the chair was historically “made and bought” in the mafia/big oil sense. She didn’t play, and ended up resigning.
At that time, all the major Mat-Su Valley GOP players were either ascending through being made and bought, or because they couldn’t be gotten rid of – like Vic Kohring.
Nobody hated Palin more for her independence from the oil bribe machine than Sen. Lyda Green, who I expect to be indicted soon. The rumor about the baby started in her staff and supporters, as Palin was pushing her AGIA plan through the legislature, over Green’s objections.
sweet.. thanks
Here’s some good news – the port along the Columbia that is receiving components for a wind farm in Eastern WA is so busy they can’t ship them all inland.
Now we just need to figure out how to keep the transmission lines from going down in the wind …
60 Minutes interview right here.
thank’s for correcting my misperception, et. i’m glad i have you and your knowledge to learn from.
thanks newton
I bet Palin will get a crash course in every thin she needs to know to pull off a debate from the neocons at the American Enterprise Institute. It does’nt matter what she truly knows or does’nt know, she just has to pull off an acceptable act.
way kewl response (from newton’s link)
Lyda Green was one of the folks Steve Benen quoted as being less than complimentary of Palin. Since she was a Republican (and the only one in the article), I was wondering what was going on there.
No doubt she will be drilled.
But Biden is a big-game player. I think the difference will be more than stark.
As others have suggested, attention payed may be key – I think that’s not a problem.
That sounds a little Dick Cheney-ish but in a goodway.
ok, pups, that’s it for me tonight. g’nite all and thanks for hanging out with me.
Eternally sworn enemies.
Right after Palin beat Murkowski in the 2006 GOP primary, Lyda Green brought a big packet of tens of thousands of dollars in political contributions from big oil and lobbyists to Palin’s house. She was very conciliatory to Palin, who she had been wan toward until the primary win. Palin curtly thanked Green, leaving the envelope where it was. A few hours later, the envelope was returned to Green.
It must have been hard for Green to bring the envelope to Palin. It must have been humiliating for Green to have to return the money to the yet unknown person who had told her to deliver the bucks to Palin.
This is one of many stories I still have to more or less sit on, that has never made the news…
I knew them when they started out at the Cactus Club in Miami. I pitched some songs to Bobby, the one who married what’s her face. I always thought Raul was weak as a writer. He can sing though.
Sweet Dreams
nite suz
Biden has dwelled within the foriegn relations committee for the past seven+ years. He will have juicy GOP stories he could pull out and reveal that could be absolute BOMBS! She would be defenseless against this inside dirt he might want to talk about with the American voting public.
I get the feeling Palin’s cursed with some sense of honesty. It’s a bit hard to believe in any politician these days, particularly from the GOP. (I feel foolish just for suggesting the idea.)
The bay area has all the fun Imagine all that talent represents less than 1% of the talent that cibs there. Impressive. I can see the Angels hangin out so I guess homeland security will be on deck to bust those DFHs. “We have met the enemy and they are ourselves”.
Goodnight, Suzanne.
And… He’s on Senate Judiciary.
Exactly, and I sincerely hope he does not hold back.
She’s has lived politics since he was in her mid-20s, so she isn’t overly afflicted by honesty. Compared to the majority of politicians she may appear honest, but it is relative.
The bigger problem is that she believes the world is 7,000 years old and will probably end soon. She sometimes wavers between young earth and old earth creationism, but I’ve gotten surprising responses from her in the past about the end times…
Then – Is Governor Palin good for Alaska, and Alaskans?
Forget the ‘honesty test for politicians’ question – Do Alaskans benefit from her governance? Is she steady?
She has shaken up the 30-year-long frozen status of getting our natural gas to market, instead of being burnt off at the wellhead or re-injected to build wellhead pressure. Other than that, she has been better than Frank Murkowski, wore than most other governors.
Perhaps “less corrupt” would be a better way of putting it.
The fundie thing is certainly troubling. If there’s one trend in politics that bothers me for any number of reasons it’s the increased emphasis on religion, and the hold it seems to be gaining on how we manage science and education. It’s been the public school systems and our ability to fund and foster scientific research with little interference that have made this country so affluent. Now these guys want to piss it all away because it conflicts with their interpretation of a 2000 year old religious text.
Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. I was reluctant to use the Lyda Green quote in my article, and now I’m kinda glad I obeyed that instinct.
just gave you a hat tip…
Thanks. I love the slogan on the back. “What housing crisis”, indeed.
That was great…some loaded questions answered well. I think Joe needs some serious gym time to get in shape. What was 20 years ago? A skeleton?
