From Team Obama:
“Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same,” said Bill Burton, Obama Campaign Spokesman.
I have to say, I find this pick totally baffling. If McSame wanted for tactical reasons to pick a woman (and I agree with Jane that it’s a smart play), why not Hutchison? His entire campaign is based on the premise that the scary Russians and Iranians and terrists want to kill us and that he is the safe choice to protect us from them.
Palin is a very green candidate — she’s only been governor for a year and a half — she’s younger than Obama and has zero foreign policy credentials. And McSame just turned 72.
This undermines the entire rationale for his candidacy.
I don’t get it.

She’s a hunter, huh? The candidate you’d like to have a deer with?
Here is the press release they should have sent out:
Who?
####
She’s anti-choice even in cases of rape and incest. Hope women hear this part of Palin’s views. McInsane should be attacked for his judgment even more now.
McCain just shit and stepped back in it.
Popcorn anyone?
Her administration is also under investigation for her own version of “Troopergate”- trying to get her sister’s ex-husband, involved in a bitter custody battle, fired from his job.
I know. I’m pinching myself to see if the McCain team will soon say “Psych!”.
I was anxious about no potential pick except Petraeus (sp?). Lieberman would have wrecked havoc but not have brought along the Republican base. So they went to shore up the base, but can Palin even do it among that group? And what supposed disaffected HRC voters would go for this Christian right robot?
Can Christmas have come in late August?
Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same,” said Bill Burton, Obama Campaign Spokesman.

NUKEEELAR weapons………………….
McCain’s eyes are blinking a message as Palin speaks.
“My friends, I was waterboarded into this choice by Karl Rove.”
-G
That’s the great thing about irrationality. It’s irrational.
Undoubtedly this is GREAT news for McCain!!!11!
she is soooooooooooooo sophmoric
As to “why not Hutchison”, I’ve heard she and McSame hate each other. Plus, photos like this wouldn’t be that helpful.
As to why this pick – it strikes me as the kind of thing someone who shoots a lot of crap would do. In other words, he recognizes he’s either going to win big or lose his entire bundle on this throw of the dice, so he throws. He’s chasing his losses…. Given that McCain is a big gambler (stories of 14 hour craps sessions are out there) – it’s not surprising.
So, does McSame just like standing in front of green things?
This pick speaks once again the to lack of judgement by McCrazy. I read somewhere a few days ago that McCrazy wouldn’t pick Hutchison because they don’t get along.
This is a slap in the face to all of the qualified Republican women like Kay Hutchison, Christy Todd Whitman, Liddy Dole, Condi Rice.
A slap in the face.
-G
How old is Kay Bailey Hutchison? Also, she has said way back and repeatedly that she doesn’t want the positon, so I’m not surprised that she was not chosen. I am puzzled by the fact that they would choose Palin, first because of the current state of Alaska politics. Second because she, herself, has allegedly used her high office to personally pursue possibly retaliatory steps against her ex-brother-in-law possibly to affect the outcome of a current court case. I have no idea how well she’ll do in a debate, or anything like that as yet, though. Still, I don’t like the idea of making assumptions that would go toward underestimating the opponents strength.
I’m so thankful we didn’t have to suffer through Dan Quayle as president. If McCain gets elected, given his age and health, there is no way can avoid having this inexperienced troglodyte running our country. This is more shock doctrine at work. Just imagine what the corporatists will do to our country if she is in charge.
So Palin makes the pitch already in her speech to Ferraro and Clinton supporters …
The most sexist move of all is picking a woman for her gender not for her competence.
18 million Hillary pro choice voters are not going to vote pro life. Are they going crazy over there?
Hutchison is 65.
I tell you, this is the most schizophrenic campaign.
Good. Lord.
Did I just hear what is supposed to be a serious candidate for Vice-President of The United States?
oh my gawd. That was some scary shit.
She’s. Got. NOTHING.
It will be very interesting watching what the MSM does to get behind this one.
A virtual unknown, they have been flogging this hard and now what?
Who is going to be the first to get up and tell the world her awesome credentials?
well said
Can we stop the farce that Geraldine Ferraro is a Democrat please:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oun4WWr3j3I
She’s pumping the Palin pick, and still going on about how horribly Hillary was treated by Obama and Howard Dean. WTF!?!? During the primaries, I was pissed at Obama for not hitting back at Hillary with all the things he could’ve. He went above and beyond to treat her fairly even in the face of the steamroller of lies from the Clinton campaign. The racism and sexism in Ferraro is beyond the
Palinpale!so effin’ green she just invoked one of the Keating 5 – woot!
oh yeah, the Maverick has been crossing Party lines from the jump :D
I’m assuming that this is “qualified” from a Republican point of view.
he is a schizo
Good afternoon BT.
What’s there to get? Repugs have their own finite reality. I believe this is all kabuki. The october surprise will be mindblowing, and in the end, Cheney will still be shooting in everyone’s face…
In the style of hyperbolic journalists of yore: a wild swing by a fighter heading for the canvas.
Almost seems coordinated, doesn’t it?
this pure COMEDY GOLD
Correct.
Also, how will a mother of 5 with young children, go over with the stay at home-mother religious right?
I mean I’ve heard the Schlafley wing lamenting ambitious women for decades.
-G
Hello, Hello, Is this the correct floor for The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party?
It’s called being caught between Iraq and a hard place.
They want a woman because they want to go after Hillary’s PUMAs. But they can’t take a pro-choice woman, because that would offend the base.
They aren’t going crazy over there, but only because you can’t go someplace you are already at.
The McCain camp (once again) have revealed themselves to be politically calculating every move. The problem with calculation is that it’s very important that you check your work. Otherwise you can get a wrong answer and not know it at all.
BC
On NPR, Republican pundits flailing away trying to justify Palin and her experience.
I had this thought as well. They must have something big cookin. Not sure that would even work though now. They won’t be able to put the lid back on the can that Obama has opened up. I hope at least.
geeze the debates are going to be a doozy.
godess MSGOP IS WILDY spinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnning
While I agree that Palin is one of the least experienced of those that were available to pick from, she is certainly not a “green” candidate. Can we say Anwar? Can we say Polar Bears? Can we say “friends of big oil?”
If Prez Election ‘08 were a prize fight they’d stop it right now.
Obama showed his good sense of foreign policy 6 years ago when he came out against the Iraq War.
Palin was the mayor of a small town 6 years ago.
This pick is insane.
from wiki
I agree. But treating women respectfully is NOT a requirement for a repugligan.
reminds me of that
Here’s what I think: I think she wasn’t even on McBush’s top ten list originally. I think that his entire top 10 list turned him down flat or couldn’t pass vetting. Condi ain’t the greatest SOS we’ve had, but she’s smart enough to see a train wreak coming. Ditto the others. I think Palin was the first person on the list not smart enough to turn him down who could also pass background enough for McBush. She’s under investigation, which says interesting things aboput the ethics of anybody higher on the list.
Boxturtle (Think she’ll hunt Dems, like wolves? Safely out of range of counterattack…)
Either Rove just really doesn’t understand women, or this is McCain’s secret plan to get revenge for 2000: Play lapdog long enough to win the nomination, then do everything in your power to throw the election. Is he planning to enter HER into the Miss Buffalo Chip contest, too?
Yup, yup, yup.
Would you like some Earl Grey?
I think that it’s like the Twilight Zone. There are voters out there who want a cheerleader in chief. As weak as her qualifications are voters in our fine nation re-elected Bush.
I think that McCain saw Obama’s speech last night and decided that he wanted to see Obama become president.
btw, is shrub speaking at their convention?
Palin is said to have a child with Downs Syndrome.
Mike Savage claims it doesn’t exist.
Let’s hear Palin’s opinion of Savage’s comment.
So, how’s Joe Biden going to win a debate with her?
The racism and sexism in Ferraro is beyond the Palin pale!
Expecting a woman to give up the rights to her own body to get another woman elected is insane. Just another has been trying in inject herself into something she has no business.
Wha?!?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dwzk3g-lB0
Palin, “What exactly does the VeeeeePee do anyway?”
Paging MoveOn.org. We need an ad highlight McInsane’s judgment immediately.
Here, here.
-G
Would you want this person at some point in the future to have control of the nuclear football?
but CHUKKKY boy she is NOT CHANGE she is more of the McSame
She’s a young Phyllis Schlafly without the foriegn chops!
Hi bonkers,
I’d love to adjust my tin foil hat and go on a roll, but FDL is mostly about facts. Mindblowing, i say…
Let her talk.
why yes, and Johnny McKept’s unBirthday as well :D
I expect to hear “mother of five” repeatedly from msm.
You’ve got company, BT.
I was listening to the McCain’s event in the car, and NPR’s Linda Wertheimer was asked by the host of their coverage for her thoughts. Paraphrasing, she said “I can’t think of a VP candidate on either party’s ticket whose resume is so thin and weak. Given that McCain’s health is what it is, he’s said that his VP pick is perhaps more important than most presidential candidates. Given that, I just don’t get this choice.”
What? He answers the questions that she can’t because she is clueless.
I agree; she is really a tacky old broad. I never trusted her after she was so eager, or ignorant, about her “Italian” husband (who would therefore never cooperate with any finance disclosure). She’s got her own demons.
I think Kay Bailey only has an interest in TX. She has hinted at not going for a next term, even if she does not run for Gov, as she really apparently wants. And she also has small children whom she does want to spend time with since she waited so long to be blessed with them. I think she sincerely means it as well. Why would she want to be pummeled by McAngry? And Look what Sen. Dole has at home: surely not asking for a double dose.
Dow response: plummeting.
McSame-Pain….
Ding, ding!
and treat her like your having an argument with your “respected”wife
win on the merits
What a gold-plated gift to Obama. Couple this video with Boxturtle’s astute observation above that many candidates probably turned McCain down and it gets even wilder. With her lack of experience, ongoing investigation and this video out there, this is the best candidate they could get through the vetting process? McCain has zero judgment left (and zero credibility).
This from HuffPo.
The next Dick Cheney.
She sure isn’t into protecting species. 2 OR 4 legged.
I am confused about a few things here. Women (and men) under 45 are going to be pretty much dominated by Obama. McCain’s hope has always been for men (and now, he hopes, women) over 45… he can win this by cementing strong numbers in that demographic. How does a 44 year old pick help him here?
You can Digg it HERE
unless they haven’t been born yet.
It be educational to examine how she ran her campaign for governor.
Or her policies! She’s pro-life, for pity sake! She stands for a lot of stuff that Hillary Clinton is totally opposed to! If they can poach her voters just by getting someone of her gender, then those voters are so low information that they don’t care who they vote for. We need to remind them, every day, several times a day that their reproductive prerogatives are very much at stake in this election, as is their social security, their equal pay options, healthcare decisions, just about every aspect of their lives, and then we need to remind them again that elections have consequences. That sometimes the consequences are GWB and Cheney!
McCain’s lack of good judgement is once again on display.
The GOP is now going to have to embrace every single defense of identity politics they have spent decades refuting.
They’ll play the victim card over and over again.
Start going back and reviewing the abuse heaped on Sen. Clinton by the far right and get ready to shove that shit back down their throats.
-G
she seems perfectly capable of handling herself, no shrinking violet. But she sure will have to bone up on foreign affairs.
Mrs. Greenspan is gushing about the Palin pick
She may be the only woman of any consequence in the party that McCain hasn’t angered/alienated by calling her a c*nt.
Give it time. ANY tense moment on a campaign bus WILL bring out the explosive temper and the good ole “c” word.
He’ll show up.
Since Lush Limpdick and the thugs at Pox Newz were pushing Romnutz hard, McInsane must REALLY not like Mittens, since a Mittmo pick would’ve ensured the Conglomerate Media fluffing would’ve risen to levels never seen before in America.
Actually it was autism that Savage claims is made up.
Downs Syndrome is quite different.
Palin’s new born son has Downs.
was is the drug addicted sex vacationer saying about the pick ?
TheoCons.
Palin is strongly pro-life, and McCain is *still* trying to convince the TheoCon leaders that he’s worth supporting. We’ll see if this helps.
I think we will see Hillary go after Palin
Please, there was an earlier post about “irrational”. What is that phrase? Res Ipsa Loquitur? Yep.
oh spinnining SPINNING for HILLBOTS
She has a four-month old with Down Syndrome, and she’s embarking on a cross-country campaign for the vice presidency. Wow, what an amazing role model.
ot
gop might postpone convention
http://firedoglake.com/2008/08…..onvention/
fdl news box, here is my comment, too.
oh, so NOW they care?
no, it’s because brian williams, when asked by chris matthews the other night, if it became a choice of having to cover new orleans or the gop convention which would it be? he said even though it’s important to have balanced coverage, that it would have to be new orleans.people first he said.
Mel Martinez……..brain dead but still spinning
That’s funny, I just saw on the news that she had that person fired “to protect a family member in an abusive situation”.
not completely, she’s gettin’ the digs in, has all day.
Not only that but I remember all the things said about John Kerry and his wife Theresa because she is rich. I don’t hear any of that crap point at McCrazy. At least Theresa didn’t have 2 half sister that she chose to “forget” about.
Who will be taking care of her newborn while she’s off on the road?
I’ve heard speeches better than Palin’s from high school student-body presidents.
Bizzaro World.
they can’t cancel the convention
the airlines gonna let everyone change their flights?
the convention center’s gonna let them out of their contracts?
that is so bogus
Palin is another one of the jerks who enjoy killing defenseless creatures for entertainment.
How does that square with her anti-abortion stance?
I await the first nationally-televised kill with FOX drooling over her manly hunter qualities.
test
The Pukes want to lose this one. That way the Rats will clean up the mess in time for the Pukes to appeal to working class racist resentment in 2012.
Hummmmmm….good luck with that task in the short time remaining before Biden/palin debate. *G*
We have years and years of rightwing punditry assaults on Sen. Clinton.
Start digging them up to throw them back in their face when they start to coddle Palin.
-G
i’m wondering if ted stevens is cashing in his chips……
or else.
seriously.
But she was never student body prez.
What happened, actually, was that McCain lined a large group of vp candidates with Palin among them, and said “all those who want to be considered as my running mate in 2008, please step forward.” At which point, everyone except Palin stepped back.
Downstairs I had:
It needs amending:
Non-Compos-Mentis and Bimbo Too
postponing the convention will give them a chance to get Governor Palin a speaking coach.
Obama broke McCain’s glass jaw last night and McCain has responded with one last desperate haymaker.
From today’s performance, it looks like she’s going to make him the center of the campaign. I found schlepping that poor helpless human onto the stage today to be completely disgusting.
It is the normal wingnut thing. Embryos must NOT be killed for any reason whatsoever…after they are born, it is open season. Besides, we need more soldiers to fight more wars.
bogus, good word.
bet the goopers are laughing about our heads exploding right now, only thing is, they’re exploding for different reasons than they think.
who said ‘teh stupid’……
glad it’s not contagious.
rofl.
Exactly, you don’t study your way over someone with 35 years of traveling and forming relationships with foreign leaders.
Indubitably!
I’ve got whiplash from comparing Dick most powerful fourth branch floor wax/dessert topping Cheney to Ms. what does a VP do? Palin.
Hi Firepups!
Big Mitch is from Alaska, and he just weighed in with his take on it. This should be fun.
The whole thing smacks of complete, utter desperation.
And reflects McCain’s poor judgment.
He probably got angry while he was mulling over his choice and made a rash phone call.
I relish the prospect. A female cross between Elmer Fudd and Nanook of the North.
McCain, by this choice for VP, has conceded the election in the face of
last nights invitation for him to bring his “A” game to the big house.
The Rethugs have gone into shock… couldnt happen to a more deserving
lot.
McCain picked Palin, but she was his second choice. Katherine Harris turned him down.
had to use another woman to fight his battles for him/use their resources……while he hides behind the skirts.
What exactly are you saying here?
OK, hold your fire everybody. Has anyone here seen KBH on the tube in the last few days? She presents like a elderly woman who is over her head just appearing on TV (much less a US Senator) – The Goopers would be putting up the “Crypt-Keeper” ticket. The visuals would not be confidence-inspiring.
Also, does anyone think that Hutchinson would be treated any better in a debate? Biden would have to fall down and break his neck on the way to the podium for the VP debate to be competitive. Palin will not have a breadth of issue knowledge, but the Goopers fake that well enough to please the required lizard-brain part of the base.
And Palin is a babe. Let’s not kid ourselves.
Besides, unknown is what they needed. A lot of folks will find tons of things to like about her.
Palin:
-is a poised and immensely capable 44
-gets the former Hillary supporters something to think about
-presents very well
-is pro-birth
-has a shitload of kids
-has a husband (Todd?) in a union
-throws the female vote up in the air more than a little bit
-has a son who enlisted in the Army less than a year ago
-is a tax-cutting Governor
-is energy-knowledgeable
-has serious working-class roots
This isn’t a win, but this is now a coiled snake of a ticket.
And, they changed the story less than 24 hours after one of the most electrifying political events in this nations history.
Funny in many ways. She is obviously hard working, but not ready for anything like this.
It seems like they want to have these stories and a piece of “history” – but I think that it does more to show they its a pony show. Its not black or white or man or women – its POLICY. They are going for the women voters who only want to vote for a woman…is that a sizable vote?
It has been most interesting to watch how the media reports these things. The Dem convention was top-notch and got great play. This steps on that a bit. But also if you listen the media wants to make it close, they are playing this up a bit. Some of the truth will start to drip out though – 5 kids or not there are many R’s right now wondering WTF is going on.
Were I in Hillary’s shoes, I’d be rightously pissed that this upstart is on the ticket and she isn’t…..does that translate into anger at Obama or palin?
More than that, it reflects his temperament.
Infants are pretty portable. Perhaps baby and a nanny will also road trip.
Excellent points.
wonder how she feels about The Hundred Years’ War in Iraq, what with a son shipping out shortly?
The media shock is wearing off…they’re questioning his health and envisioning her as POTUS….and they just say…why?
Maybe it was a Rove suggestion that McBush acted on that will cause him to lose the election so Jebby can run in 2012.
one thing this does do is gives Senator Clinton more of an opportunity to stay front-and-center over the next few months… I kind of relish that, actually.
I think it’s a good pick, man.
what competence?
I just talked with a colleague who is a serious Republican.
He says that Palin is an ‘interesting’ choice, and that she was chosen to reinforce the message: McCain is a maverick and his campaign is about change.
Apparently Palin pissed off lots of folks in the Alaska GOP when she ran again Mulkowski (I’m sure that’s spelled wrong) in the GOoP primary. She ran on ‘reformer’ credentials, though my friend couldn’t cite what they happen to be.
It’s going to be fun — Barack Obama hit it out of the stadium last night, and McCain isn’t doing much to help himself.
As Mark Kleiman said, “If McCain can’t stand up to Karl Rove in favor of his friend Joe Lieberman, how can we expect him to stand up to Vladimir Putin or Mahmoud Ahmedinejhad?” To which I’ll add, “Or even Kim Jong Il?”
BC
My problem is, I can never figure out how much to underestimate the American voter.
omg. Check out the Redstate graphic: http://images.redstate.com/ticket_main.jpg
That image is kind of disturbing. Father, daughter?
Which they are blatent about – they are essentially appealing for women votes because he picked a woman VP…. again are there many people out there gonna put $4 gas in there car and go vote for that?
1,749 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Blue Texan and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“I don’t get it.”
I think I do, I think this is a “Hail Mary” for this election but is really designed to put stress fractures in some of the suture lines in the Democratic coalition in preparation for the 2010 Congressional elections and the 2012 big one. I think that the corporate bosses have given up on this election (long ago I think) and are really only interested in bloodying up and marginalizing some of the more tenuous partnerships in the Democratic base.
Whatever the motivation, let’s not over think it…let’s remember what happened when Joe Lik*derman almost died from blood loss from the chapped lips he got from kissin Darth Cheney’s hemorrhoids and let’s send Joe Biden out to stand up for the dignity of intelligent women everywhere and put the once and future beauty queen down for the count in the first round.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, BUT HOLD YER FIRE UNTIL THEY STOP SHOOT AT EACH OTHER!
If I were a Hillary supporter, I’d be pissed. This little girl is NOT a Hillary by a long shot. It’d be insulting to compare hillary’s track record to Palin’s. Hillary supporters know Hillary has walked in their shoes. They have shared experience that no pup could possibly imagine.
Yes, and women who are raped or survivors of incest will have to grow that man child within her and give birth if Sarah Palin has her way. Maybe that should give something to think about for Hillary supporters?
I heard scabborough say this morning that if not for Georgeie that ole Jeb would be elected president of the United States.
Can you be more specific?
.
the gooper on msnbc is saying palin has more experience because of her life skills as a woman……really.
The lunatic puke woman on MSNBC, I always forget her name, just said that she’d pick a woman who was head of the local PTA over a “man” who was on a “committee” in Congress…for experience.
Is that Biden’s line at the debate? Madame, you are NO Hillary Clinton.
perhaps they’ll do us a favor and nominate him in a convention floorfight next week…
now they’re comparing her to the movie ‘rudy’.
ugh..”that man’s child…”
Biden would have to fall down and break his neck on the way to the podium for the VP debate to be competitive. Palin will not have a breadth of issue knowledge
Silly. You don’t need breadth of issue knowledge when you have PNAC talking points. Reality is irrelevant, soundbites are always better than reality.
All she has to do is robotically repeat PNAC talking points (interspersed with “9/11!”) and she’s golden (or so the GOP thinks).
I have this fantasy where McCain has been working on an eight year plan to ruin the GOP, as revenge for the underhanded tactics party insiders used against him in 2000.
Now it seems to be coming true. I wonder if he is going to go into the second debate and announce he has been faking his candidacy all along, and that the entire campaign has been a performance art project.
Ding.
The drug-addicted sex-vacationer is Plush Limppaw…
You have a valid point, it is just that this seems a throwaway choice,
as if none of the others wanted to fly one last mission with “Maverick”.
I knew it was risky, therefore, the quotes. Because she laughingly gave that response to a question when she was the VP candidate. So, I can’t explain what she was saying; she just thought it was funny.
You should know that there isn’t a lower bound on that, ecahn…
Rove is assuming that the MSM propaganda machine will hold the white male losers, which leaves the women. He has to eat into Obama’s lead with women to close the gap in the critical states. That’s the play. They are drawing to an inside straight.
Good point.
Limbaugh – who apparently has talked her up on his show this past week.
he takes regular vacations in the Dominican Republic, a destination known to those seeking sex with minors
you mean of course she gives women who want to just vote for a woman a choice. No serious hillary supporter would even think twice about voting for Palin given her stances on women’s issues.
I’ve had that thought many times.
PLEASE tell me there is video of the Miss Wasilla pageant! I want to see her play the flute in a bathing suit!
the old man and the eye candy
Not saying she would be a good President.
Not saying she would be a good Vice-President.
Not saying I would vote for her.
Not saying she is right about anything.
But for the millions of pro-life-voting Republican men and women who have serious doubts about their party, this is red meat, and energizing.
Yeah, but we’re not talking about Obama’s speech last night. *sigh*
Savage disappeared autism, not downs.
Why anger at Obama? It will be anger at McCain for this transparent grab at her supporters under the falsest of reasons.
Wondering, RevBev, what did you mean by this?
I think that this is a sign of McCain throwing in the towel – the first step in the 2012 strategy: The party has asked McCain to give up by picking not the worst possible candidate, but a weak one, alowing the Dems to win. They will then be in full campaign mode for the next 4 years blaming Iraq and the economy on president Obama.
Serious or desperate?
The problem is that McCain is old and has a lot of senior moments and this person is not qualified to sit across the table from Putin.
An earlier thread was talking about her drawing Native American vote since she is married to an eskimo. She has vetoed twice the banning of shooting wolves from airplanes. Link that to the annihilation of the buffalo to native american community. McShame zero Obama everything else
I’m okay with that. Obama and Biden are on the road campaigning. The MSM doesn’t have the time to pick the Dems apart.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I didn’t hear once from either McCain or Palin equal pay for equal work. Now if they are serious about going after women voters, I would think they would have said that early and often.
Palin wants to go after the pta moms.
Did anyone hear the McCain campaign rally this AM where Palin spoke? Like Bush, she can’t pronounce “nuclear.” I clearly hear from her mouth that president McCain would keep “nucular” weapons out of Iranian hands.
I agree with that assessment. Never underestimate Rove. He overestimates himself, but that’s no reason to underestimate him. She will get a sympathy vote to begin with, and only if she is truly weak will she unravel. The game is still between Barack and McStain. She’s a side show. The Dems should simply ignore her and get on with the business of attacking the thugs, as Obama did so eloquently last night.
Why would Hillary care who McC chooses? Has nothing to do with her. Hill will do a great job campaigning against Palin.
My bad, lapse in protocol
should be:
Senator Non-Compos-Mentis and Governor Bimbo Too
Here’s more gems from the AP:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..veepstakes
Why is she a maverick?
Well, that’s all it takes to be a maverick in the Republican party, distance yourself from wildly corrupt politicians in your own party. Never mind that she is Big Oil and an extremist reactionary social conservative.
Maybe this is all just a stunt to get Obama out of the headlines; then at the convention they will “overthrow” McCain’s “choice” and put Romney in on a vote?
Or maybe they have lots of scoop on Biden viz ethics issues and plan to use her strong “ethics reform” stance against him?
I replied above. She made this excuse, while laughing alot, about not ever getting her husband to reveal financial information. Of course, some of that stuff turned out to be illegal. But her point was something about Italian men being controlling, as it appeared in the context.
My point was about not wanting to listen or take seriously much of what Ms F. has to say. I think she has become, or maybe always been, ungracious and opinionated in a crude sort of way. Enough said.
LOL!!
Hear, hear! That’s a point that can be made every time.
Hahahahaha…MSNBC snarky comment…Alaska is close to Russia, so maybe that will count as foreign policy experience…
echan@135:
“I can never figure out how much to underestimate the american voter.”
You really zeroed in on what worries me the most about the future of this country.
Don’t forget J McShame was a POW

Ha! We’re even on the cokes now.
Maybe. But for the 18 million Hillary voters, I think she’s a negative.
two words:
careless and me-too (ok, that’s 3)
think much of the decision making (and I use the term loosely)here was driven by how much traction Obama got out of his Veep roll out. these are some desperate clowns who couldn’t get there number above 45 and saw what BO had done and wanted sum a dat for themselves
which led them to be careless in their pick – by that I mean, I’m willing to bet other than checking for outstanding felony warrants, there wasn’t much real vetting going on
sure, Limbaugh and others will tout “this refreshing change” but that’s preaching-to-the-never-gonna-vote-for-a-Dem choir
one thing they won’t be able to ‘groom’ away is how uncomfortable mccain looks standing next to her.
I hope that’s the case but since IANAP (I am not a pundit) *g*, I’m not sure rational thinking is a strong point with some of the most rabid Hill supporters.
That’s why god made photoshop.
With her own troopergate problems, I don’t see the Republicans getting too specific about ethics.
Are we surprised at anything McSame does – he is, after all, I suspect he is in the early stages of Altheimers. She is pro life, mother of a soldier, anti-gay, a former beauty queen. She will surely ‘get out the base’. I can’t wait to see her in debate Biden – will he be merciful – hope not!
agreed.. but Alaska is also very far away from the Bible Belt. No matter how you cut it, this was a cynical and risky move. I just hope that it gives Senator Clinton a bigger role in the campaign…
That’s not a coiled snake. It’s an old garden hose.
well good luck with that. 30 second commercial showing a drowning polar bear and/or a wolf shot from a helicopter and it’s back to the bake sale for that crowd
Mrs. Greenspan sez there are a lot of pluses to the ticket. The only one I see is that the average age is 58.
Palin will be lucky to appeal to the fundies – all 25% of them. They will be shocked that she is in politics at all. Not quite nice, you know.
This is one of the funniest and still substantial threads I have come across in a long time.
yeah, but s/he also made youtube!!!!!
rofl!!!
Dailey Sitka Sentinel 1966 Oct 2
yeah, a lot of fundies are NOT going to like this.
I would use her to tear into Palin to avoid any “mean sexist!” claims against Biden. Biden can attack her on inexperience while Hillary can get really at the jugular and not be subject to any sexism cries…and Hillary is MUCH more impressive than this purdy chick.
What does it say to know that, as indicated by his choice, McCain considers Palin more qualified to serve as commander-in-chief than any other Republican, Joe Lieberman, or himself? Would a responsible candidate pick someone less qualified than himself? Oh, yeah, Dan Quayle. But Dan Quayle’s daddy threatened Bush 41 with exposing where his personal Iran-Contra ‘liason’ came from? [The guys name was Rob Cor— something-or-other, it’s been a while since I read Leslie Cockburn’s book “Out of Control”– recruited by Danny-boy Quayle.] Daddy successfully played that card against the covert IC Ringleader, former CIA director, and Reagan VP who became Bush 41.
rabid hill supporters? If they aren’t doing what she asked them to do for her, then they were only in it because she was female, not because of her policies. that being the case, I question whether they are piss poor dems or just part of operation chaos
firedogs, – please do not refer to anyone as pro life, they are indeed anti-choice
and I could tell some gooper got to the wiki first as they refer to her husband as “eskimo” – wont go over big with the native Alaskans – who refer to themselves as “Inuit”
It seems to me, the calculation is this:
In 1984, Walter Mondale was put up as the sacrificial goat against Reagan. Nobody expected Mondale to beat Reagan, so in the attempt to be daring and progressive, he chose Ferrarro….I think it’s highly unlikely that Mondale would have chosen Ferrarro if he thought he seriously had a chance-so there was nothing to lose by the choice. I think this is similar. McCain is the sacrificial goat this time, so why not take the shot? Palin is the new Ferrarro, and for most of the same reasons. He has nothing to lose, she helps remake the GOP’s image as more inclusive, and then gets stomped. Republicans deploy every tool in the box to try and hamstring Obama, who struggles mightily to fix the snake’s nest of problems created since 2000…and if they can actually manage to blame Obama for the problems, he’s vulnerable in 2012, and they reintroduce Jeb Bush to the electorate.
Or so it seems to me, at least at the moment.
Obama and Biden just released a joint press release that starts:
“Old barriers are falling…” Seems like a nice subliminal swipe at McInsane. Very nice.
After watching how Obama handled the verbal minefield he walked through during the primaries, and after seeing how they’ve retooled over the last week, I’ve got no concerns that they’ll have any problems handling Palin as VP on the rhetorical battle front.
the last one was good too..
i like how raven pointed out that palin said her husband todd’s name–
taaaaaaaad like gilda……
“-gets the former Hillary supporters something to think about”
Not necessarily gets all or even a fifth of their votes.
And Pro-Choice Hillary voters, while a majority are Democrats, aren’t the only primary votes she got in Indiana, and Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
But, what in her record loses even one Republican vote?
Meanwhile over at Larry Johnson’s house of Crazy Tbogg(tm), Larry Johnson is saying that:
(a) Palin’s choice and inexperience will highlight Obama’s; and
(b)”she was commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard
Outright Comedy Gold.
Worth repeating.
Christy upstairs with another smackdown of the Media and their non-story on the supposed conflict between Hillary and her voters and Obama and his voters
Well, Palin will need lots of training before she can be able to say that…/s
Yeah he is a democrat alright /s
Evidently the evangelical mouthpieces are thrilled.
BTW – most votes ever garnered in an election 114,697
1966? Hm.. wouldn’t she have been 2 in 1978?
Does anyone really think that sexist 72 year old McCain is going to LISTEN to a woman, mother of five, on ANYTHING?! No way. She won’t even be invited to the campaign strategy meetings, she might have input and that would make Mavericky McMaverick’s head explode.
2 in 1966 I mean
I loved the “Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard” justification.
Is there any real empirical evidence that the PUMAs represent a statistically significant voting block or is this a pipe dream that Harold Wolfson, among others and with assistance from Fox Noise, is propagating.
Such a pretty young thing will take great dictation and type up memos well, though.
At least McCain is smart enough not to pick a barnacle.
Here’s what I think: The message of the Democratic National Convention was that we can fight back against the nastiest of personal attacks with grace and style, we can get the point across about policy differences, we can challenge them on temperament, we can be questioning their wisdom and judgment without being personally insulting or projecting our own foibles on the opposition. In other words, one should not call the other guy an “elitist celebrity” while walking around in $500/pr Ferragamos and telling reporters he’ll have his staff get back about how many houses he and/or his wife owns because he thinks it may be around 6 but he doesn’t really know. Here’s the difference: Virtually all of our speakers made of point of expressing respect for McLame’s service and bravery, they had a problem with his policy and then spelled it out.
None of it seemed mean-spirited, but most of McBluster’s ads and even a lot of what he says in interviews is very, very mean-spirited. Even as McIdiot was saying he is not questioning Obama’s patriotism; he’s questioning his judgment, he nearly beamed mean-spirited smear job. The fact that he was being asked about it was a sign that it had done its job. MsSmear glowed smugly as he attempted to make it seem as if there was no intention to imply that Obama was not patriotic when McClaim asserted that Obama would rather lose a war to win an election. If that’s what we perceived, then our perception was wrong; he was not wrong in what he was projecting. That translates to, “They aren’t supposed to be understanding our dog whistles!”
No.
As Christy’s new thread upstairs tries to point out.
Again.
Christy’s upstairs
Ugh.. just took a gander at half a dozen fundie/evangelical/theocon website. They’re all absolutely gagga
http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/435468.aspx
http://saidatsouthern.com/poll…..rah-palin/
THIS is why McSame did this… its completely clear now. This was a deal.
Great comment. :)
Sorry 1996.
That IS interesting…
It is also interesting that Obama might have headed it off at the pass as a play for more cultural devisiveness in his speech. “You might think this and someone else might think this, but surely we can agree on that”. Fresh air, I tell ya.
Seems to me that Hillary is essential to the Obama campaign at this point. On many issues, she will be a much more natural counterpoint in the MSM to Palin than Biden.
yeah. He needs to have his people really spend time monitoring the evangelical/fundie publications and sites. Turns out they’ve been pleading for Palin for weeks now, and the pieces they’ve put up strongly suggest that they were tipped off.. they couldn’t have written all that stuff in a few hours.
Gidget.
PUMAs aren’t Hillary supporters. Despite their protestations. With some of them it’s all identity politics, for others, they just can’t stand the thought of having a black guy with a funny name for president. To the extent that they claim to be progressives, they’re either liars or sell outs.
I suggest we hold our fire before the repugs change their minds t make sure she is formally nominated.
Palin supports the aerial hunting of wolves and bears.
Grizzly Bay Org:
“Like many Alaskans, Palin believes that bears – and all Alaskan wildlife, exist for the sole purpose of serving humans. Sarah Palin, and the Alaska Board of Game whose members make decisions about most wildlife, are actively trying to cripple the bear viewing/eco-tourism industry in Alaska. This photograph (left) was published in the Anchorage Daily News amidst great controversy over the hunting of habituated bears around Katmai National Park and the McNeil River Sanctuary. Several weeks before the controversial Katmai Preserve hunt, Palin posed deliberately next to a dead bear to a make a point – that she will do everything in her power to make sure bears and other wildlife are mercilessly shot for pleasure in Alaska. Palin supports the aerial hunting of wolves and bears, and even spent $400,000 of state money to fund a media campaign to try and convince Alaskans to support aerial shooting (even though Alaskans have voted against it, twice!). In the past two years, bears habituated to bear viewing have reportedly been shot at bear viewing sites around the state – as a statement to bear advocates that Alaska is about shooting animals, not understanding them.”

Lovely visual, Gidget shooting Bullwinkle, proving that she’s as tough as the boys. The press will rip this apart. The campaign may as well let them handle it. Hillary is quite likely to take offense to being included in the same class.
She’s no friend to wildlife, or to voter participation:
From April 2008:
Alaska residents are about to lose their right to vote on Alaska issues in which Gov. Sarah Palin has a special interest.
She’s stopping the democratic initiative process by supporting House Bill 256 (already passed) and next her companion Senate Bill 176.
If passed, this will take away Alaskans’ right to vote on the aerial wolf kill initiative and remove sound science from predator control allowing same-day airborne killing of wolves and bears. If passed, this will give her friends at the Alaska Outdoor Council and Board of Game free reign to kill Alaska’s predators regardless of their actual impact on prey populations.
Palin has repeatedly stated she wants an administration responsive to Alaskans, but more than 56,000 Alaskans signed petitions to have the aerial predator measure put on the ballot (for a third time); Palin does not want you to vote on it.
If her bill passes it will be the beginning of the end of Alaskans’ right to the initiative process. Your only recourse would be a Board of Game populated almost entirely by outdoor council members. They can and do often pass regulations in defiance of what the majority of Alaskans want and what scientists have said, as shown both times Alaskan voters banned aerial hunting.

Alaska – Stop Upcoming Aerial Hunting of Wolves
In just two weeks, Alaska will have a vote – thanks to the powerful Safari Club International and Gov. Sarah Palin’s administration who put hundreds of thousands of dollars into an effort to kill hundreds more wolves – to continue Alaska’s aerial hunting program.
[…]
Alaska is out of control when it comes to the slaughter and outright murder of wolves. In just 2008, Alaska is responsible for gunning down 124 wolves by way of aerial hunting!
Alaska is responsible for the deaths of nearly 800 wolves by aerial hunters in the last five years.
In summer of 2008 – just this summer – Alaska is responsible for the murders and slaughter of 28 wolves who were killed near their dens! That includes wolf pups – 14 of them! – who were illegally killed by its state officials.
Time is running out! August 26, 2008, is the day! Alaskans will decide the fate of our wolf friends.
Additionally, I propose something further (since it all seems to come down to money and profit, doesn’t it?): Educate every person you know – even if they are just nature lovers and have no opinion of wolves – about what Alaska is responsible for doing. In fact, it is time to get the word out about each and every state that brags about its natural beauty and lives off of drawing tourists who are nature lovers. Let everyone you know how these so-called “nature loving” states treat their nature and its natural inhabitants.

The Dead Lumberjack Sketch
I think they are throwing the election.
Close. The election is already lost, and now they don’t have to worry about selecting a woman for the foreseeable future.
Frankly I think it is a brilliant move in so many ways. Obama blew it when he refused to name Hillary as vp – she had at least as many votes as he did and deserved to be on the ticket. Was it his bigotry or just his petulance? Doesn’t matter. And announcing right on the heals of a show convention, another brilliant move. Dems have consistently underestimated the republicans and have been amazingly over confident. No I am not a repub, but actually might consider McCain/Palin over Nader and Obama/Biden. If you think their positions will automatically be written into law then indeed our congress is a non-existent rubberstamp.
Sarah Palin isnt Hillary Clinton, plain and simple.
The two couldn’t be more different on the issues that matter most to women. From health care to a women’s right to choose, they’re at complete opposites of the spectrum.
Learn the difference, and vote smart.
http://www.SarahPalinISNTHillaryClinton.com
One issue that actually became an issue during the primary was overt sexism shown to a highly qualified candidate and the party’s response to that. Sorry, but that is now an issue.
And, again, the executive branch now has too much power – no more checks and balances. Are we electing a dictator? Seems like most people think so. The down ticket is structurally more important.
So 10 years as mayor of a town of 5k and less than 2 years as governor of one of the smallest states in population now equals “highly qualified.”
Got it.
What makes you think Obama is running for “dictator?” And what makes you think that is the belief of folks here?
Or are you unaware of the work this site has done in trying to stop the stripping of rights from citizens and trying to force the Congress to do their duty?
Its interesting that now Palin (aside from the surprise factor) seems to be drawing as much attention as if she had just become the GOP Presidential nominee. There’s lots of questions yet to be answered regarding the role she will play in the campaign. It is hard to imagine that McCain will be willing to let her get enough limelight to be a factor. I guess he’s just hoping the MSM will fawn all over her due to her looks and her family.
She has as much experience as Kaine – who Obama vetted. She has more executive experience than the top of the dem ticket.
The ‘highly qualified’ candidate I was referring to was Hillary Clinton. Her’ political party’s handling of her run in the primaries has become an issue, and to many it is a very important issue.
You don’t think the executive branch is too powerful? I do. And if there are issues that I do not agree with in the executive branch I want the legislative branch to provide some checks and balances. There are no candidates I agree with 100% on all their issues. Obama has proven himself to reverse himself over and over on issues (such as FISA) so its hard to tell if what he says he will make any attempt to carry thru on. I expect with a democratic congress the issue of choice/life will meet with enought resistance to make it a no starter. And the mentality that says that the president gets it all his/her way with no balance from congress is the mentality that elects a dictator. This should take no one by surprise.
Actually no she is not as experienced as Kaine. She had two terms as Mayor of a town of 5 thousand and less than 2 years as Governor of a state with 700k population.
Kaine had two terms as Mayor of a city of 200k, a term as Lt Gov before being elected to Governor of a state with a population over 7Million.
And though Kaine was vetted, he was ultimately NOT selected.
So I don’t see them as the same in any way shape or form.
And I do think the current executive office wields far too much power thanks to Mr Cheney and his fourth branch nonsense. And I agree that there are a lot of issues that need reversing. I am not a super fan of Obama but do you really think that McCain would be better? Or that any of the third, fourth, or fifth party candidates stand the chance of a snowball in hell of being elected?
Given the number of corporate get along/go alongs in Congress from both parties, we stand a far better chance of making some changes with both a Dem President AND Dem Congress.
Or haven’t you noticed how easily the current Dem Congress has rolled over?
Tim Kaine is also pro-life and Obama honored him by having him speak on the convention night celebrating women’s right to vote. His experience is a bit longer and hers is different but they are comparable. Also, she did not sit in her office hitting the “present” button over and over like the top of the dem ticket did.
I honestly think that congress needs to TAKE back power. No one will give it to them. Certainly not Obama, see his FISA vote. In a way it might be OK to have a weak republican executive and a stronger congress. In the early 2000s with both congress and pres repub the power drain into the executive became, almost, taken for granted. Then we got a dem congress and under Pelosi/Reid it has continued to be a mindless rubber stamp. I fear that if both branches are dem congress will hand even MORE power to the president. Keep in mind Pelosi said it is GOD who is giving us Obama. That is my only reason, personally, to vote McCain and I am very undecided about it. But I can say that I am very unhappy with the DNC and Pelosi/Reid, and my vote is not given for loyalty to a party like that. However I will be strongly supporting my state race to unseat a repub senator with a dem.
Post after post of people explaining why she wouldn’t appeal to them. Yah, but she’s not there to appeal to you. She’s there to get out the vote. Bush won in 2000 by getting people who didn’t vote in 1996 to vote: the fundies, the antigovernment whackos. She’s there for them. And yeah, they prefer women barefoot in the kitchen, but she has qualities that counterweigh that: big family, didn’t abort Down Syndrome child, extremist on forced pregnancies, creationist.
I’m disappointed though that so many people reflexively make out she’s dumb. Why? Do you have a catalogue of gaffes she has made? I don’t think so. She’s a woman and she’s pretty. So she’s dumb. Biden is a gasbag. She won’t have to be smart to win the debate. She’ll just have to keep her answers short and focused and the media will sell her as winning.
