Greetings, Eureka. Made it to Denver, hung around and soaked up the ambiance, but didn’t make it into the Convention proper. Came home early to watch The Speech with friends at a watch party when we realized we weren’t going to get into the Stadium. Had a good time, though.

It’s good to be back.

Now that brings back memories. Road trip to NO, pre-Katrina for the Abita Brewery summer picnic. We hooked up with some freinds with an old bus (50’s) and they had painted Wand Chung Tour in the back window. It broke down coming into NO from Abita Springs to the north and we had to push the fucker through the French Quarter. It gets fuzzy after that.

In a positive development, Senator Joe Biden yesterday refrained from any mention of his previous “plans for Iraq” which include a soft partition scheme and a more recent (and more general) plan for “active federalization”. Instead he referred more generally to Barack Obama’s position on the war in Iraq.

What remains for the Democratic Party is to define an exit strategy that does not convert the Iraq situation into a net gain for Iran. As long as the final phase of the US occupation of Iraq involves consolidation of the Maliki regime and the basic system of government adopted in 2005 (rather than a weakening of these two factors) such gains for Iran will be the inevitable outcome. What is missing in Democratic discussion of exit strategies is the realisation that US policies in Iraq from 2003 to 2008 (and specifically Washington’s particular choice of partners among the Shiites) have unintentionally strengthened Iran’s position in Iraq quite considerably, so that leaving Iraq tomorrow would not in any sense mean a return to the status quo ante of 10 April 2003. This point may perhaps seem a little long-winded for an election campaign where there will be a preference for black and white caricatures, but for those who truly care about the political stability of the Gulf region in the long term it should be seen as the fundamental issue.

Iraq and China signed a $3 billion deal this week to develop a large Iraqi oil field, the first major commercial oil contract here with a foreign company since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The 20-year agreement calls for the state-owned China National Petroleum Corp. to begin producing 25,000 barrels of oil a day and gradually increase the output to 125,000 a day, said Asim Jihad, a spokesman for the Iraqi Oil Ministry.

The contract revamps a deal the Chinese company had reached with Saddam Hussein in 1997 to develop the Ahdab oil field in Wasit province, south of Baghdad near the border with Iran. That’s the best theory I’ve been able to come up with. Saddam had the world’s second or third largest oil reserve and was not part of their price-fixing club. In fact, he was desperate to sell, because we had something of an embargo on him. And they (the Cayman-Islands-based oil giants) not only lacked control but were getting no cut of the profits on his oil.

The theory that PNAC wanted us to invade Iraq to secure Israel’s eastern flank against Iran is stupid on the face of it but the only explanation I can find for Zionist participation and enthusiasm. Neverheless, there was major WASP support (e.g., Cheney and Rumsfeld) for some other reason.

AUSTIN — U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison proposed this week that a high-growth state, such as Texas, be allowed to drop out of the federal highway funding system and keep its motor fuel taxes for its own road building needs.

It would be better, the governor’s spokeswoman suggested, if Congress could do something to increase Texas’ share of federal gasoline tax dollars. At present, she said, Texas ranks at the bottom of the states in percentage of gasoline taxes returned to the state.

The distribution formula discriminates against populous states with heavy highway usage, Hutchison’s office said.

The senator, in her address to the county officials, noted that Texas now gets a return of 92 cents from every gasoline tax dollar it sends to Washington and soon will see that increased to 93 cents.

When Hutchison first entered the Senate in 1993, the return was only 76 cents, she said.

Hutchison’s success in getting the percentage increased has given Texas $15 billion in additional federal highway dollars over the past 15 years, her spokesman, Matt Mackowiak, said.

IIRC the Army Corp. of Engineers have not replaced or repaired the levees adequately. Furthermore, the contracts for pumps were let out to Republican operatives and have failed testing and have been found to be totally inadequate. If you know anyone there, have them get out, and take everyone they can with them. FEMA is broken.
