Suggested RNC theme song, B.B. King – Nobody Loves Me But My Mother & How Blue Can You Get?
RNC Dance lesson, with music by – Stereo Total
Bless their little dark hearts, the Republicans don’t know what to do about the timing of of the RNC with the possibility of a hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast. How dare American citizens in need get in the way of a GOP Gala!
With that in mind, from the bottom of my tie-dyed little DFH heart, I thought I would help them out tonight and suggest an RNC theme song as well as provide quick dance lesson.
What’s on your mind tonight?

About Firedoglake
Aloha, ES!
’bout time someone put a few quarters in the jukebox.
Hiya, Eureka!
Eureka!
Another one bites the dust…? ;-)
You only need a nickel for tonight’s republican dance lesson. Unless you are a lobbyist, dance lessons start at 100k and go way up. *g*
New York, Wang.
Seriously how come I can’t get in on the New Orleans topics before serious EPU territory?
Sorry for repost….important stuff.
Leeves.org has been calling for an investigation almost since the week it hit.
Right now they are promoting a YouTube video to create awareness of what happened and to try to get the public to support the investigation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wln_iq5bc8k
The Katrina Myth; the truth about a thoroughly unnatural disaster
Vera Wang?
The dance video is too damn funny!
You talkin’ to me?
EPU’d
Can anyone tell me how to add one of those little “TM” notations on a PC?
Always open topic during Late Late threads.. especially updates on New Orleans.
I wish!
Beautiful music, thanks.
MsAnna, hugs. Hi Chris, WDD, everyone.;)
I’ve been saving that video, wondering if I would ever have a good reason to post it.. Kind of says it all when thinking of GOP dancers, no?
Welcome blog home, neurophius. Did you make it to Denver this week?
No… Wang Chung…! ;-)
Margot! Loved the BB, too.
Especially the first steps. Grab hold and shove it…
Btw, ES, mahalo for your concern! 8-)
Greetings, Eureka. Made it to Denver, hung around and soaked up the ambiance, but didn’t make it into the Convention proper. Came home early to watch The Speech with friends at a watch party when we realized we weren’t going to get into the Stadium. Had a good time, though.
It’s good to be back.
Now that brings back memories. Road trip to NO, pre-Katrina for the Abita Brewery summer picnic. We hooked up with some freinds with an old bus (50’s) and they had painted Wand Chung Tour in the back window. It broke down coming into NO from Abita Springs to the north and we had to push the fucker through the French Quarter. It gets fuzzy after that.
Of course…)
ES … thanks for the videos! perfect.
Love that dance video. watching the stands yesterday, there were so many casual good moves all the time.
how can you teach a Pug to dance?
And we all know it was Wang Chung, not Wand Chung.
Good thing I wasn’t in charge of the shoe polish.
Honey I’m home…… Miss Dog says Hi too
All the key noters gave home run speeches, I thought Hillary’s was the best of them, with Obama’s a close second… Michelle and Bill’s were great…
Welcome home, katymine.
should be alt + 2, I could be wrong though.™®©
Digg it!
test…
Hiya, Katy! Got any requests for the jukebox?
Did you get to hear Kerry? I LOVED his. Felt he finally got to give it back for the swift-boating, etc. As I said earlier, what happens when the Gores and Kerrys lose the big prize. They turn into down to earth mensches at long last. What a price tag!
Brian Schweitzer for originality..and just beause he had the most fun with his time on the podium.
Gore and Kucinich were among my top favorites as well. So many greats though. Both Clintons brought it home.
Hmmm…
Testing
Maverick
It seems that the Arizona GOP candidates are now called Conservatives and not Republicans…. or True Conservative…..but not linked to the yaahoos who have been running things for the last 12 years……..bwaaaahaaahaahaaahaaa
Didn’t work for me…! 8-(
Loved Schweitzer’s. And Kucinich … though they never let him say that he wanted Bush and Cheney to get more than 4 more years…. more like 10-20!!! :)
No, did not work, Hannibal…did you mean hold down the ALT key while pressing the 2 key? Didn’t work for me…
Another Friday, another failed bank
If I could change one little thing.. I really wish Carter would have had a turn.
I did like his speech… I agree with LL on Gore and Kerry’s too…! I may have been toobless but I still got to see the convention…
Oh! Oh! I found a RNC themw song!!!
The new news dump which we can set our clocks by.
Yes, that’s what I meant. ☯
Hi, Teddy!
We had one of those this past week in Topeka KS while I was gone…the FDIC said they were going to limit their reimbursement to depositors to $100,000, contrary to their usual policy of paying above the limit–don’t know what that is about…
Weird, it works just fine for me. ☃
Good one!
Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop by Landon Pigg
The Brits were saying they’re experiencing the worst economic downturn in 60 yrs…
OK, now your just showing off. *g*
Met a couple at moveon house party close by after the Barack speech Mr. remarked “how they going to pay for it all?” I sent him an e-mail he answered back… “Great Speeches last night. Quite a cross section with us watching it! Americana!
Now I have hope.
As Obama defiones more clearly his program mpre people will come aboard the Hope/Change train. He recovers well and has good energy..he can learn.
Moyers had Katrina Vandem Huevel editor of the Nation on tonight. worth a bookmark. A Professor Reed as well. http://www.pbs.org/moyers/jour…..atch2.html
What browser, Hannibal? I’m using IE…
ES! Evening.
“Brian Schweitzer for originality..and just beause he had the most fun with his time on the podium.
Gore and Kucinich were among my top favorites as well. So many greats though. Both Clintons brought it home.”
Wonderful stuff!
Safari, plus I’m on a mac. ☭
(TM) testing
I thought Gore was outstanding. I was at a watch party and kept yelling, “President Gore!” Straight and to the point.
Sounds great, BB, I’ve another hour and a half before it airs here in the Isles!
Character Palette is my friend. ☮
oh, I’m on a PC (he admits shamefully)
flunked – has worked in the past.
I only caught the end of Kucinich but I thought he was great! And I think that was one of the best Gore speeches I’ve ever heard.
We’re told that:
— John McCain does not speak for his campaign.
— His campaign took away his cell phone.
— He wanted Tim Pawlenty as his VP.
— He has only met his “chosen” VP candidate once.
IMHO, the poor old fucker is totally out of the loop.
I’d prefer that his campaign and wife put him in a home other than the White House.
Now you’re rubbing it in.
well, if there’s a way to add “TM” on a PC, I would like to learn it, because the word “Maverick” cries out for it…like “The Surge”
ⓅⓄⓌ
Haven’t you heard? You are not allowed to speak disrespectfully of John McCain like that.
Better The Old Wrinkly White Guy Home than The White House.
The sooner the better, wigwam! ;-)
oh, and he can’t use a computer “but he’s learning”
McCain has plenty of “homes”
He just needs someone to tell him to stay in one of them and keep his hands off our government
Yes, but it’s impossible to resist. ✯
Like this? Maverick™ Or would you prefer Maverick©?
Agree! I thought of him a lot. But they did do something for him the first night I think? I missed whatever….
I did want to see Dodd somewhere … and Edwards …even though going through 5 stages of grief a second time for him.
I heard talk about how they wanted to hide Oprah and Affleck and other celebs to fight off the “rock star/celeb” stuff. And Clintons may not have come it has been speculated so MSM didn’t aim their cameras at their every reaction. Very well worked out!
Fireworks instead of balloons, and the Denver sky just by itself … yes, nice touch, indeed. And the thunder stuff stamping on the bleechers (spell?). How cool that must have been.
I heard what I heard on a radio, so I missed the visuals. Was still moved and filled in blanks thanks to FDL and radio commentary. They said people having house and restaurant parties listening applauded but then were HANGING ON HIS EVERY WORD. That is mastery of a massive audience.
BO finally got to MLK reference, and it was so respectful and yet so subtle and yet … less is more sometimes (?)… at least I gave BO that for that one. Class and also with BO emotionally intelligent STRATEGY!
I read that part of Dennis’s speech was censored: “They’re asking for another four years. In a just world, they’d get ten to twenty.”
A theme song. But not the RNC’s.
No fucking shit!?
that would have been the best line of the Convention
mustn’t sound too angry, though
I have been paraphrasing badly. That wording nails it! thanks.
They’re such wimps. If only we could fuse Obama’s inspirational charisma with Kucinich’s guts.
Then it could be ♞ taking ♔
One thing I’d noticed and so did Reidar Visser… Biden kept the Iraq rhetoric low key…
He should have tried life in the Hague and then compromised with ten to twenty.
They’re such wimps. If only we could fuse Obama’s inspirational charisma with Kucinich’s
gutsballs.Enhanced it for ya.
but what does your little square thingy mean, Hannibal?
Oh, doesn’t show up on your screen? Guess that would depend on where the little square thingy was.
I have old eyes, what is this?
I’d hate to waste good blues on Republicans. Here is an RNC theme song and dance lesson all rolled to one, aka when young John met Cindy.
One was a knight chess piece, the other was a king.
can you translate that statement to English, Hannibal?
OK
That song kicks ass! There’s a radio show here in San Diego that plays that song a lot.
I love the classic knight fork with the king and/or castle
I would never have called that blues, but it’s a great choice.
I was close, but I thought one was a pwn!
That cracked my shit up.
I was greatly disappointed that I never heard the phrase “war crimes” in any of the speeches at the DNC. I did hear “torture” a couple of times, but this convention was way tamer than it should have been, and that “tactical consideration” deprived the American public of a much-needed cathartic reality check.
When in God’s name is our public discourse going to stop with the euphemisms and stop ignoring the elephant in the living room. We’re dysfunctional!
well…. I’m fried….what a week….. better get to bed before the next Law & Order episode gets going…. ah oh…. maybe too late…
The video’s diminutive protagonist is a fabulous dancer.
USACE did the flushing study for our National Estuary…a crap job.
They did the Harbor expansion that screwed up the flushing in the first place. The bay is filling in fast. They implement WRDA Bill projects…that is scary.
Great video they so sold out NOLA with allthe canal and the destruction of the wetlands that normally absorb the storm surge. Thanks for that Ann.
Did you read Greenwald’s column at Salon? He agrees with you, though he gave BO points for his speech finally!
Gotta go. Have a great night.
I shall bow out early tonite! I bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!

nite katymine

Actually, I wasn’t calling the Jimmy Castor song blues, I should have said I’d hate to waste B.B. King on Republicans.
sleep well, ct!
g’nite, katymine!
G’nite katymine and CTuttle.
I just had to remind myself over and over… Eureka it’s really just a big pep rally, it’s really just a big pep rally, it’s really just a big pep rally.
Helped a little.
Doc you really knocked one out of the McBallpark here today.
‘gnite Katy. I’m looking forward to Bochco’s new series on TNT, Raising the Bar.
And sweet dreams to you too, CT.
Here’s how it’s done, Chimpy:

Iraq and China Sign $3 Billion Oil Contract
I resemble Dr. K’s remarks. But I’m not running for President. And I didn’t chose a bimbo to be my backup.
strategically speaking, the best we could hope for is the second coming of Saddam Hussein, but alas a return to the status quo ante of 10 April 2003 is no longer an option. We unleased the 60% Shiite majority, and there’s no way in hell that the 20% Sunni minority will return to ascendancy. The CIA and State Department made that determination during the run-up to Desert Storm (late 1990), and they were dead on.
Yep. Fucked up.
Back to the future.
Sweetheart deal, provided by our defense dollars and troops blood! Iran will think twice before agitating China.. but we will use it to our advantage against Iran no doubt.
Thanks, ES. Glad to be of service (though the late night-concern troll munching gave me heartburn).
More importantly, thanks for tonight’s tunes: we need ‘em!
I read every goddamn word that man posts as soon as he posts it. He’s America’s greatest political writer since Thomas Paine.
Thanks for pointing that out. Well done Doctor Kirk.
Hiya, pups – ES!
Whoa, Sarah is outdoing Joe Hazelwood for bringing the national spotlight on Alaska. Won’t work. McCain is more toast than ever.
Play darts with Jesus!
Hey ET. You were the first person I thought of when I read the news this moring. WOW!!
Been wondering where you have been all day, Mr ET!
Hi ET – welcome!
ES, wigwam,
I had to run it by Ms. ET three times this morning before she actually believed me. Then she laughed for about 45 seconds. We’ve known the Heaths (her dad’s family name) since Sarah was in high school.
Too many good writers to claim one is best. Hunter Thompson is a sentimental favorite of mine. He wrote a forward to a Ralph Steadman collection I’d like to find. There was a line I really loved about how Steadman and Hitler might have been twins, separated at birth and raised by hyenas.
Wigwam sir, you are dead on. Cornered, defanged army destroyed, with no fly zones North and South Sadaam was a buffer against Iran and no threat to his neighbor states.
Iran has much more influence in the region due to stupid Bushco/Neocon greed and lies.
America is weakened so we cannnot restrain aggressor as well . The “Almighty Dollar” is weaker by 1/2 and the surplus has reversed by three fold. We are a debtor nation with a stressed military.
My question to you: can we do without force in Afghanistan/Pakistan in going after Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda?
What part of “free market” don’t the conservatives understand?
Saddam was willing to sell us petroleum at market prices. The new regime and/or whomever they lease to will sell us petroleum at market prices. Now, please tell me your definition of “win”? What the fuck have American taxpayers “won” for their three-billion dollars of incremental indebtedness? (I’m deliberately and inappropriately ignoring the loss of 4000+ American lives and two or three times that number of American limbs.)
Evenin’ ET.
Everybody’s been pickin’ on Sarah. She’s been wrong about so many things she’s bound to get something right any day now. Maybe this is it: Says Global Warming Is NOT Man-Made
The scariest part of the answer is this – I still to this day have a hard time believing that this was the payoff for putting ChimpCo in the executive branch. I know it’s true, but it is just shocking again and again.
And it’s built to last.
A couple of days ago, someone wrote, “If Hunter S. Thompson were alive today, he’d shoot himself again.” It was in a context where that seemed the most appropriate course of action, but I had to feed the dog and take out the trash.
ratfood,
Most of global warming isn’t manmade. Most of ocean acidification, which is the emerging, more serious threat, is.
Last time I asked Palin about that, on a radio call-in program, she didn’t even know what I was talking about. And she wanders between being a young earth and old earth creationist. Her church, the Wasilla Bible Church doesn’t appear to have a firm stance on young vs. old.
Exactly! The surface of the planet is becoming carbon-toxic from subterranean carbon brought to the surface by mankind, e.g., fossil fuels. It’s fucking up both the atmosphere and the oceans, and has to stop now. The window of opportunity has slammed shut. There is no longer any slack.
Might this be it?
http://www.abebooks.com/servle…..&y=14
The payoff was the obscene defence contracts for Bush cronys. They want oil prices high the less oil on the matket the more they get for their own and the more we pay at the pump. Bare foot and pregnant philosophy.
Raven commented today.
Hunter was a veritable cornucopia of cynicism regarding politics and the human animal in general. I don’t think anything in the political landscape could drive him to take his life, he’d learned to live with those demons, albeit with fear and loathing. I believe it was the rapid decline in his physical health that inspired his final desperate act.
I know there are many who say his best writing was done long ago but I thought there were some real gems contained in his Hey Rube column during those last years and the essay he wrote on September 12, 2001 was especially prescient.
I can almost sense the tipping point when I’m out on saltwater, even up here, where it hasn’t hit yet. No dead zones in Alaska yet. But all our people running for national office, including Mark Begich and Ethan Berkowitz, who tout themselves as “green,” gloss over when I bring this up.
Thanks but I don’t believe that’s it. It was published before Hunter died. It might have been something like “Grapes of Ralph.” There was something hysterically ironic about a book on such a tranquil topic as wine having a forward containing absolutely savage verbal attacks against the author.

╔M▐▐oþδ♪σ
I still can’t do TM.
That’s the best theory I’ve been able to come up with. Saddam had the world’s second or third largest oil reserve and was not part of their price-fixing club. In fact, he was desperate to sell, because we had something of an embargo on him. And they (the Cayman-Islands-based oil giants) not only lacked control but were getting no cut of the profits on his oil.
The theory that PNAC wanted us to invade Iraq to secure Israel’s eastern flank against Iran is stupid on the face of it but the only explanation I can find for Zionist participation and enthusiasm. Neverheless, there was major WASP support (e.g., Cheney and Rumsfeld) for some other reason.
It’s sooooo fucking eerie, right from dystopian sci-fi, e.g., Soylent Green or The Space Merchants (my personal favorite).
I have some foggy recollection of Rumsfeld having substantial investments in the defense industry (among other things) prior to being appointed Secretary of Defense (talk about conflict of interest). Anyway, perpetual war would be motive enough for those guys since it is immensely profitable to both big oil and arms merchants, as well as many other corporate interests who grow fat on the nectar of human misery.
I’m out, take care all.
Maybe this?

“replace the milk with heavy cream…”
Google is God. How do they manage to publish the entirety of The Great Shark Hunt for free online in our fascist/ownership society? Each page has “copyrighted material” on it, but there it is free for everyone, a part of the commons. Damn!
OMG!
Off to bed here: major sugar coma ;)
Yep. Damn!
And btw – imagine your browser being able to display that kind of material just a few years ago… Amazing.
Just reading that recipe sent me scrounging for chocolate.
nite kirk
It’s insane! For four and a half decades, I’ve long dreamed of having all of the world’s print available online. Modern scanners are amazing devices. But getting past the ownership restrictions has always been the issue. Maybe Google has sufficient money to buy and scan most everything. Wow!
here’s the google search I did:
do it and the first hit isn’t amazon or a review…
Beautiful! The world may yet become a reasonable place in spite of us.

Southern Republicans have “poor mouthing” down to a science.
Re Sarah Palin, we can assume she is a better shot than Darth.
Here is an interesting Dkos diary regarding Sarah’s attempts to improve her Wikipedia entry hours before the announcement of her being chosen as GOP’s presumptive VP nominee.
Hey, ll -
What’cha doin’ up this time of day? *g*
Mornin’, wigwam -
Didn’t mean to ignore…….comments crossed in passing.
Here is another instance of Palin’s Internet brushup.
Insomnia mixed with travel anxiety/hypeness.
Where ya off to?
Yet another interesting tidbit about Palin’s candidacy.
East coast (Washington and Philly) to visit family.
That wiki changing stuff is interesting; know how to get there for superficial search but have zero knowledge of how one goes about changing entries or “rules” (informal or otherwise) of use for people doing so. Color me an ol’ foggey (sp?)…. *g*
Late to party, IIRC this should shine a light on ET’s forebodings. 99 months or less come Monday. (also wigwam at 134)
http://firedoglake.com/2008/08…..s-or-less/
Per Karl Rove on Face The Nation:
Until two years ago, Palin was mayor of a town of 8500 people. The entire state of Alaska constains fewer than 700,000 people.
This a blatant, and insulting, attempt to woo disappointed Clinton supporters. I doubt that it will work, and hope that it doesn’t.
anxiety + hype = imminent departure (sounds like)…..hope you a safe and enjoyable trip.
Wish y’all could be here; the house smells divine! Someone gave me a starter for Amish cinnamon bread and today is it’s birthday. Never made before and hope it is sufficiently sweet/cinnamony to suit my preferences. Lor’amercy, the thing makes four new starters plus two baked loaves. Everybody on the island is gonna be sick of gifting. this thing is startin’ to look like squash.
This a blatant, and insulting, attempt to woo disappointed Clinton supporters. I doubt that it will work, and hope that it doesn’t.
I’m just as worried that it’s a lot more about bringing out the rabid rightwingers who might otherwise have sat on their thumbs. :-(
From that link:
Thaks.
I hadn’t seen that post, but had read similar comments from kirk and read the articles he linked to. Damn scary stuff!
They were apopletic about having a mormon or a jew as veep.
Gotta love newspeak:
WTF? Coal is neither clean nor renewable. It’s fucking carbon! The only way to get energy out of it is to oxidize it to carbon dioxide, which is green-house gas. How fucking stupid do they think we are?
Wow! Sounds like very good stuff.
With John McCain’s pick, he is obviously become suicidal again:
http://noolmusic.com/youtube_v…..ribute.php
This is the one that got me:
fifteen parts per million divided by 2 parts per million increase per year is 7.5 years until the 400 parts per million tipping point is reached at current rates. Current rates are increasing rapidly as newer users are maturing their economies.
side note: just re-read Innumeracy, mathematical illiteracy and its consequences by John Allen Paulos (BOMC selection) © 1988. It predicts the state of affairs that is happening now. A point of failure of the educational system to teach logic and abstract concepts to students – chilling as to consequences.
Another related book is: The Closing of the American Mind, … by Allan Bloom
Just dropped out of the pans and am sampling a slice……daymn! this *is* good stuff. Kinda think I might still prefer c. rolls from yeast dough where the cinnamon is separated in swirls vs. mixed throughout the entire batter but this recipe ain’t half bad. *g*
Did he pick her, or was she forced on him by the campaign and/or the GOP hierarchy? I’ve heard both versions.
Oh no!!! Heresy! Heresy! Left-brain-ism. Please. Please. Stay out of your head. Stay in your right mind. ;-)
NOAA Hurricane Gustav update:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refres…..y#contents
Looks like NOLA will be under the weather from Monday, possibly until Wednesday from the looks of the estimated storm track
How are people betting on the levees holding up this time?
707,
a bicameral universe for unicameral heads. Nagonnawork!
IIRC the Army Corp. of Engineers have not replaced or repaired the levees adequately. Furthermore, the contracts for pumps were let out to Republican operatives and have failed testing and have been found to be totally inadequate. If you know anyone there, have them get out, and take everyone they can with them. FEMA is broken.
The best thing I ever read about the tension between left-brain types and right-brain types was Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. A great read.
Damn, this generation of American kids does not want to be bothered with the need to learn mathematics. Leave all that to the Chinese, Indians, and Eurpoeans. We’ll live by selling their goods to each other.
If the levees break again, they might as well cancel the Republican National Convention and save the money for 2012.
Thanks for that. Made me remember the smell of my mom’s sour dough starter in the ‘fridge. Mean smellin stuff but the bread was to die for.
This from the Irish Times this morning, Gustav has strengthened to category II and could be category IV in 48 hours, just in time for NOLA and the oil rigs off LA coast.
http://www.irishtimes.com/news…..aking3.htm
away, weekend shopping to do. All the best…..
Much concern here in south central Texas. Even a cat 3 storm surge could devastate N.O. Thanks for the link T-Bear.
A friend of a friend said recently that, if Gustav hits NOLA during the RNC, he may become a believer in existence of God.
This needs to be pushed:
Breaking update;
Gustav now at Cat 3. Sorry can’t get a link to work. T-Bears link @ 190 and hit update will get you there. Scary given the storm is not yet in the gulf proper and will surely intensify as it crosses.
Try the National Hurricane Center
Good morning Raven. Kinda indicative of the depth of her ignorance no? Most people don’t understand the value of operational intel gathered from an opponents news sources during war. Soldiers are taught to never discuss unit, job, deployment or equipment for this very reason.
Brought to you by the National Security Party. Their stupid makes my head hurt.
