For Harry Reid, who really is a believer in bipartisanship and Senate comity to say this is surprising:
"I've served with the man 26 years," Reid said. "Do I have the ability to speak with experience about someone who has abused everyone he's dealt with? Someone who does not have the temperament to be president, who's wrong on the war, wrong on the economy, wrong on nuclear waste. What am I supposed to do? Walk around talking about what a great guy he is? I don't believe that. .... "
One of the most self-defeating rhetorical devices of the convention has been the way every Democratic speaker has felt the need to preface their attacks on McCain with ritual statements of how McCain is an honorable brave man who loves his country. Often, indeed, they say he'd be a great president. Perhaps McCain's POW status makes certain attacks on him off-limits, but this incessant praise from Democrats merely reinforces the myth of McCain as the great honorable daddy figure who is strong and principled. It's crazy and what's worse, most of them probably don't even believe it.
McCain's an asshole. He's a man who called his wife a c*nt in public. He has a violent temper and he's hated by many of his colleagues. And most of them are wandering around pretending that he's some sort of plaster saint.
I don't say this lightly. Heck, I liked George Bush Sr., unlike a lot of folks, for example. You can be a good man, and a Republican. But you can't abuse everyone around you and be a good man. Democrats need to learn from Reid and stop pulling their punches.

I just heard that Sarah Palin (Who?) will be McCain’s VP pick. Is this true?
Ian!!!!
Bring it!
Palin’s introducing the new quarter in Alaska.
John likes young women.
McCainstream Mornin’ Joe reporting L’il Lie-bee in Dayton, but then he would be there, anyway.
L’il Lie-bee…the self-loathing toady.
Pain has plenty of time to go national in politics so why would she want to get on board the Titanic II.
Sarah Palin - governor of Alaska - see BT’s post below about “someone from Alaska…..”
Nicely said Harry.
Is this a sign of tougher tactics to come I mean if Harry can take the gloves off?
Reid sounds like he’s had it with McCain and the McCain myth. He’s not the one I would have expected to tell it like it is about McCain. Here’s to hoping the flood gates have swung open, and Senator after Senator comes out to tell their personal horror stories about the abusive jerk, McCain.
Democrats need to learn from Reid and stop pulling their punches.
Didn’t see any punches pulled last night regarding McCain’s temperment and judgement.
Palin (R-Corruption)?
I’ve served with the man 26 years,” Reid said. “Do I have the ability to speak with experience about someone who has abused everyone he’s dealt with? Someone who does not have the temperament to be president, who’s wrong on the war, wrong on the economy, wrong on nuclear waste. What am I supposed to do? Walk around talking about what a great guy he is? I don’t believe that. ….

stunning!
heh his HIGH SCHOOL NAME was..McNASTY……..he didnt have to be a POW to become a nasty bastard
Reid finally is showing his long lost boxer past.
Mika — I’ve got a feeling the press is being played with… we’re not going to talk about it until we know…
Say it, Ian! The prefaces before the attacks were overdone. I think some will see them as disingenuous, which in many cases they were.
On the Young Turks this morning, they had a piece about how Romney and McCain absolutely hate each other - sound bites and all. Riffing off the above post, McCain obviously carries grudges; hence why it is not Romney (unfortunately, in my book)
I am guessing that the “base” put the kibosh on Lieberman, solely due to his “pro-choice” stand.
If it is Palin, I think they’re going for the “maverick” card for low information voters - he’s picking someone the MSM didn’t think of. It’s the only chance they got - I see McCain showing up more often on Letterman, Leno and SNL, just to show what a nice guy he is.
Reid finally is showing his long lost boxer past.
gettin’ off the canvas, throwin’ a punch at the air, and tryin’ to figure out what round it is?
So when is Reid going to tell us what he thinks about Joe Lieberman? And more importantly when are Democrats going to do something about these ghastly Republicans and Republican wannabes?
Start immediately to focus on the validity of EXIT POLLS.
The only way they can steal this thing is to manipulate the polling done prior to the election, and then manipulate the machine count in the aftermath.
A necessity to pull that off is for the GOP to Swiftboat the validity of Exit Polls, which would show about a 10 point advantage for Obama which they must be able to explain away.
Mark my words, the enemies of truth will begin to start hammering on the reliability of Exit Polls well before the actual election. You’ll recognize it as seeming to come out of left field - completely out of context.
BE PREEMPTIVE! Start to write your stories now about the RELIABLE use of Exit Polls to determine whether there has been fraud in elections held over the years around the globe, as observed by the likes of Jimmy Carter. Cut Rove off at the knees before he gets started:
Revisit the exit polling data from 2004 and share it with others:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2.....exit_polls
Call it to the attention of the media. Let the media know that we WILL NOT TOLERATE another stolen election, nor will we tolerate their complicity in disparaging the validity of Exit Polling as a valuable check against election fraud.
Prior to the 2004 elections, CNN’s Jeff Greenfield was interviewed about the then-forthcoming elections, and his parting comment at the end of the segment was what would have appeared to be an off-handed disparaging remark about the reliability of Exit Polls.
Greenfield was shilling for Rove – and this was a TALKING POINT ordered up by Rove. “Exit Polling” had not been part of the prior discussion, but was something that he slipped in at the end of the segment – as if ordered to do so. Keep an eye on Greenfield and others. Call them out by name.
DON’T LET THEM SWIFTBOAT “EXIT POLLING”
The convention is over, it’s time for the gloves to come off and get serious.
I can tell you Gordon Smith is taking a beating recently.
The commercials around here are just hammering him and hog tying him to Bush.
SHOW TEXT?
The ‘Show Text’ isn’t working for me. Is that the case for you all or some of you? Anyone know?
Citizen Ian Welsh:
Since last night the gloves are off and the cage is closed…no Democratic punches are bein’ pulled anymore, this is a war of attrition and McCrazy and Lieberman have no place ta hide and they can’t dance.
GREAT question,he needs to confer with Dick Durbin
I’m sticking with my prediction that it’s Pawlenty for McLame, based entirely upon the shit-eatin’ grin he was sporting on JoeScar yesterday morning.
May I mention that I disagree with KO. I like Mike Murphy.
Oh, and, where is Tom Ridge this morning?
i think they shat their collective boxers, last night
To judge by the quality of their organizing so far, I think Obama’s people are leaving nothing to chance on this score. They surely have targeted the precincts where stuff is likely to happen, and will put people in there to ensure that it doesn’t. This is a very big campaign, run almost like a corporation with its several divisions. They are sure to have a vote-suppression division to make sure it doesn’t happen again in Florida, where the rethug governorship makes it most likely. We have Ohio and Arizona, the other state where one might expect real pressure. I forgot Minnesota. That state needs watching. But for the rest, I think we are ok this time out.
Or Jeb Bush?
Tom Ridge, would be the smart choice
Jebbies toast…sorry Scarpitts

Patience. Patience. Techno miracles tend to not be quickly done.
NPR had Pawlenty on this morning saying he wasn’t going to be in Dayton. I have to wonder if Republicans, as opposed to the media, already realize that November is going to be a disaster and don’t want to be the one associated with it along with McCain and Bush.
Mika’s programmers evidently tellin’ her to STFU and let the McCainstream Media side of the panel spin along….
Jeb is a THEIF …. a major league criminal
Mika is totally pathetic, she might as well be perfume, cause she is like the air
The good news is that especially Ohio and Virginia are now both run by Democrats. While Florida still might be a cesspool of voter corruption, if the numbers are correct (see 527.com) we might not even need it.
I concur with Greg Palast, among others, that the vote in Ohio was stolen. The issue was that a lot of it was done through sleezy and unethical, but not illegal (enough to be proven, at least) tactics, such as putting not enough or crappy voting machines in heavy Democratic districts.
I have much more faith in Obama’s ability to GOTV than Kerry’s 4 years ago. The issue, in my view, is not necessarily the stealing of votes, per se, but the ability of republicans to drum up instances of “voter fraud.” Rove is not stupid, he knows the demographics - it is why the DOJ had such a focus on “voter fraud” in the first place.
or in my case - Techno miracles tend to not be
quicklydone - at all.Haven’t you heard, Ian? Assholes can’t be shot down. But if they are,
they somehow lose their assholiness.
I am not a fasionista, but on Joe TV, there is a Crazy John, spokeswoman Nancy Fotenhauer. She mistakenly confused her bracelets as earrings. Funny.
Thanks for the reply. I knew it had been not working (for me) for awhile now, but I’d been reluctant to bother asking about it.
oooooh, poor McCainiac Nancy Somebody pouting because Mika challenges the McCain camp leakings as disingenuous….
but, but, but, you all obsessed about Obama’s veepstakes…what about uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusssssssssssssssssssssss….
LA Times has a piece on Palin here:
The news just said Pawlenty has been told within the last half hour that he is not the pick.
definately stolen heres the proof
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/....._0827.html
I meant to add (Stupid no edit function), note the use of the word “maverick” in the piece.
oh, she’s a piece of work.
NPR had Pawlenty on this morning saying he wasn’t going to be in Dayton.
Interesting, but I would hate to think my usually impeccable reading of various shit-eatin’ grins may be on the fritz…. *g*
I don’t think she’s pathetic…I do think she gets ganged-up on not only by Scarbro but also the behind-the-stagers.
Yeah - I think some mention of this was in Kennedy’s piece for Rolling Stone a couple of years ago.
i betcha after the speech last night, they changed their minds…need some heft
Is she the one who thinks she talks about economics? When I saw her, she laughed and interrupted the other guest all the way. Rude and snarky.
she needs to take lessons from Rachel,as a woman she is embarrasing to me,in her meakness…MeakMika
You are correct plunger, ‘the people’ … “WILL NOT TOLERATE another stolen election …” nor one ‘postponed’ to celebrate an Autumnal ‘Surprise’.
The question then arises; will the d ‘leadership’ tolerate such theft or postponement?
There is but one acceptable answer.
Must we have the audacity to ‘hope’ that the leadership is prepared for such a test?
Do you have a linkie?
Show text works fine for me, as long as I wait until the refresh is completed. Explorer/PC.
NPR said a private jet from AK arrived in Ohio last night.
yep.
bushie welfare recipient.
oh bring it baby
all the lithe blondes …..what was the movie STEPPFORD WIVES?
Heard earlier this morning on MSNBC someone mentioned that Palin was going to be at the Alaska state fair unveiling the new Alaska quarter.
Instead of these reporters all sitting panting by their blackberries, hey, maybe somebody should go drive by Tom Ridge’s house…or whomever…and see if the Secret Service is camping out…or where they’re at? You know, reporting?
Not just waiting for the steno-script.
I like Jim Geraghty’s take on Obama’s speech last night
http://andrewsullivan.theatlan......html#more
After 8 years of Bush, of Cheney, of torture, renditions, and Guantanamo, of the death of habeas corpus and the 4th Amendment, of endless wars and the promise of more, of massive giveaways to the rich and corporations, of the housing and oil bubbles, of Katrina, of the failure to create jobs, of the pervasive staffing of government with cronies, goofs, and ideologues, of its looting, of constant incompetence, and of frequent criminality, why would anyone be angry? Inexplicable.
i cannot understand JJ anymore…im trying
When I saw her, she laughed and interrupted the other guest all the way. Rude and snarky.
Just another reminder that being de-betrothed is not necessarily a bad thing. heh.
hitler liked blondes, too.
I just heard on CNN that Palin was on some kinds of ethics committee dealing with oil in Alaska. Surely that’s a joke that’s too good to pass up.
As for the idea of Sarah Palin…even troopergate aside… an OLD man with recurrent cancer and serious anger management issues picks a raw angry housewife from arguably the hotbed of Republican corruption who has zero experience in commander in chiefly issues…
yeah, that works….
CNN, Corporate Neocon Network says it is Palin. Of course, they are frequently wrong, and always uninformative.
Good Morning Ian and Firedogs,
Nancy Pfotenhauer has the standard right wing pedigree, lobbyist, obstructionist, extractionist whore
common dreams
source watch
anyone have a clue as to where we can find overnight viewership numbers ?
Trying to find the press release on the Alaska site - there is some mention of it, but I can’t get on there now.
See BT’s post below where he has the link to the private jet from Alaska issue.
My source is very well connected within one of the “7 Sister” foundations (Coors, Bradley, Olin, etc.) and apparently they’re not happy about this pick -saying that she’s not qualified to be commander in chief (whatever that means)
Take it for what it’s worth.
Show Text works for me until the refresh the page.
ET, phone home…… we need you now.
Spit, fucking Today Show all McCain.
MSNBC saying it’s Palin… not confirmed
Re Palin, there is this via TPMmuckraker:
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpoi.....ck_638.php
Mika: I smell a rat.
Meh, I have to go to work, I was in bed all day yesterday, sick, and this afternoon I have to go to my Uncles service.
Bleah.
Gallup saying Obama up 48-42.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/109.....48-42.aspx
I don’t see how McCain gets a bounce from Palin. The PUMAs are already heading for Obama.
Found this on Daily Kos:
The only problem is, I think he’s dead.
Feel better Busted.
My condolences to your family. Never fun stuff.
hang tough, Busted.
Scarbro says: 3 hours of media hype is not worth 85 days of media saying the McCain campaign are liars.
Speaking of abusing everyone he comes in contact with…
Here here! I am sick to death of the mamby-pamby “We honor John McCain’s service…blah blah”. Total nonsense and totally irrelevant. His past service is not distinguished, POW status be damned. He didn’t CHOOSE to be a POW, it wasn’t some brave, daring choice on his part. He did sign a confession after being “harshly interrogated” (it is NOT torture, not according to the GOP AND McCain any longer). He was simply unlucky enough to be shot down while strafing civilians. So what? I (OK, the entire aircrew on our B-52) was shot at by Iraqi missiles and AAA while bombing sand or re-bouncing rubble (Mithras PLEASE just let there not have been Iraqis at those locations!) during Iraq War Episode I. In our case we were simply luckier than McCain. Big deal. Nothing heroic or magic about it at all.
McCain’s military service should be ignored. Simply not mentioned at all. If it is brought up, the response should be, “So? And?”. I just want to see the facts addressed without preamble flourishes. Simply attack McCain, the man, for his nasty temperament and VERY short fuse, and attack McCain’s “service” as a senator. Compare and contrast his rhetoric as a “Maverick” vs his actual votes and his stated positions. Highlight his flip-flops.
Above all, quit making every attack on the slimeball only after a fawning, ass-kissing preamble for his “service” in uniform. There’s nothing there to fawn over.
I think the boys may be ignoring Mika at their peril.
Wow. Harry Reid said that? Maybe I’ve underestimated him. As for McCain THIS is how he’s going to react to losing the election.
As my wife and I watched Photenhour’s Heather-like smiling snark the other day, I noticed that her neck was totally different color from her face. It looked very red and irritated, like a case of hives. We decided that it was a case of telekenesis and each of us stopped choking our Dr. Pepper glasses.
The only problem is, I think he’s dead.
So he couldn’t refuse if asked.
It may have come to that. 1/2*g*
I cannot imagine picking Palin given the ethical issue in Alaska right now. If he does pick her, she’s the sacrificial lamb for the rethugs (and therefore dumb as you-know-what) or he’s exactly what we think he is–batshit insane.
If it’s Palin, let’s start a pool on how long it will be before he calls her a c*nt in public.
Well, I think they know that people don’t care as much about McCain’s pick as Obama’s, so it doesn’t merit the same level of effort. (Plus they’re all tired out from partying in Denver. )
Chuck Todd dampening down…. anybody but Pawlenty and Romney….
“the revenge of the press corps” could come to McCain’s campaign if all these head fakes don’t lead to something special
Great, the Magic Dolphin Lady flapping her gums on the speech last night.
If it’s Palin, let’s start a pool on how long it will be before he calls her a c*nt in public.
or a pool on how long before she’s indicted?
Ooh, Dan Quayle and a beauty queen all wrapped up in one… or Lieberman. Take your pick.
This is a good day to disrespect our organs of mass propaganda. General Electric has a “footer” saying who is not going to be Insane McCain’s choice. How is that “news”? Our “Free Press” is pathetic and only serve Corporations. I am thinking it is not necessary to watch most of this trash.
Must feed the undercurrent of media feelin’ used right now….
oooh, me likey.
But would she be better than Jindal, the magic-using exorcist who cures cancer with laying on of the hands? “Out devil cancer! OUT!” Ta-da! fixed.
My local paper this morning was suggesting that the pick was Pawlenty. Where did that come from?
I half expect him to pick Condosleeza, but the logistics of that pick would be difficult. She must at least PRETEND to be doing State Department shit for the next 5 months (though she hasn’t actually done any of that shit for 8 years as it is). Pick the black woman to neutralize the black man on the Dem side. Black and a woman to make a splash. Cokie would just LOVE that pick, but then, ANY pick by McCain will be seen as a “smart and bold” move - more proof that McCain is a “Maverick”.
Sooo many possible pools …
Capeheart: pulling off the events like Obama’s overseas trip, the DNC convention, speaks to a level of skill and organization that people need to pay attention to
Oh, definitely, the only reason to watch it is to mock it.
I loved it last night when even Pat Buchanan admitted the Republicans were struggling to get ten thousand people to come to McCain’s VP announcement.
So true. I was thinking about the contrast between this DNC convention and 2004. This one ran like clockwork. This guy is good.
love to see her debate Biden on Shia,Sunni,or Putin vs Geogia
I heard Harry say that and was stunned, thought I’d misunderstood. That was huge.
Yes, I have been impressed by the campaign organization and use of up-to-date technology.
Other guy [not Halperin]: Obama showed another step of maturity as he spoke last night…these are serious times and these are grownups
McCain campaign looks adolescent….
High props coming now from the Scarborough team for Obama….
After Obama picked Biden, McCain’s pick would be Palin in comparison.
Sarah Palin…to pick up a few percentage of the votes from Hillary’s rabid supporters????
Brings up memories of Dan Quayle deer in the headlights look.
If Palin is the pick, a pool on how long it takes McCrazy to forget her name - in public?
or pull her arm so hard she needs to wear a sling..”g”
In fact, McCain’s pick is MUCH more important than Obama’s objectively because there is a solid chance that McCain wouldn’t survive one term, let alone a second (not a threat, just a fact of actuarial stats), anyone he picks as his VP, should he be elected, WILL be President before the first term is up.
pass the Dom,and popcorn,im beggining to smile again!
I’ve had that thought, too, sadly.
hahahahahahahahaha
It’s completely in the pattern of Rs picking incompetent members of disadvantaged groups to display in prominent positions to cause Ds to criticize a member of one of its base groups.
That sentence was inartfully crafted, but I hope my point is clear.
Ian wrote: “McCain’s an asshole. He’s a man who called his wife a c*nt in public.”
Just for my personal edification, does anyone have an Internet link to said quote or is it just contained in Cliff Shechter’s book?
