Cartoon by Mike Smith, Las Vegas Sun
Last night was the first chance I had to listen to the punditocracy bloviating about how things are going. I’m not even certain these people were at the same convention that I’ve been at this week.
For example, the constant blather about whether the Democratic party is divided and how Hillary supporters refuse to support Barack supporters. And how Barack supporters hate Hillary. Blah blah blah.
It’s a nice story, but I honestly have yet to find even one delegate that feels that way. I spent a lot of my week at the end of my very long days of slogging back and forth from the Big Tent blogger venue to the Pepsi Center, chatting with delegates along the way as we herded through the checkpoints and long lines for security scans. I rode home to the hotel with them in the evenings on the DNC-scheduled buses.
And not once, in my many, many conversations did I hear any delegate say anything along those lines.
I talked with some very, very staunch Clinton supporters — including folks who had been district organizers, the boots on the ground folks knocking on doors all around the country, and a few people who had been friends of the Clintons for years. Yes, they are disappointed that Hillary did not win. How could they not be, honestly, they are human?
But going to sit out the election or so mad they would vote for McCain? One of the women I spoke with said that would be an insult to what Hillary has always stood for — and she said it emphatically — before the Clinton speech on Tuesday.
And Obama voters? I met several on the bus ride home Tuesday night. A couple of whom told me they did not like her one bit — but one told me sheepishly that the Hillary speech put tears in her eyes. "She could not have been more gracious — what an amazing heart she has."
So why do the media pundits keep pimping the divided storyline? Does the RNC still send out oppo blast faxes? You betcha. And, frankly, if the media would have had to admit that the conflict storyline they ginned up to pimp ratings wasn’t something they’d researched very well.
Does that mean that there aren’t some disgruntled folks on either side? Of course not. But the big media-induced chasm? Full of crap. And they ought to own up to it. Think they’ll gin up a crap storyline for the GOP convention?
Me neither.

Hilary for Attorney General.
As a NYSer, I’d like that. Give us a chance to get a good senator.
The McCainStreamMedia does research? Since when? (knowing that there are those in the minority that actually DO want to do legitimate reporting and research)
imo, even the most die-hearted HRC supporters will now look at Sarah Palin, who stands in direct contradiction to everything that Hillary stands for, and lose any consideration they might still be entertaining about voting for McSame, and now Palin.
After McCain’s selection of Palin for VP today, it will become even clearer that the media support McCain more than his own party.
Christy, they are far more concerned with ratings than with truth. Welcome to American InfoTainment.
Bob Shrum thinks Palin is a good choice.
’nuff said.
They, McCainStreamMedia, must read here. A few of us wrote yesterday that McC’s big weakness is his record on women’s issues and his personal actions towards women. We predicted he would try to overcome this with a female candidate choice.
We had no idea he would make a choice that destroys his argument that Obama does not have enough experience, by selecting someone EXTREMELY inexperienced.
Jeepers. Talk about “eating” your words?
Speaking of the MSM being full of crap… McCain’s choice of VP is EVIDENCE that the recent polls showing McCain’s strength were known by McCain to be totally rigged.
NO WAY does McCain make this VP choice if he believes the poll numbers and perceives himself to be leading.
NO WAY.
http://lawprofessors.typepad.c…..lster.html
ROVE KNOWS THE TRUTH.
Oh yeah.
I caught the clip of Caroline Kennedy’s smack down of Wolf trying to feed the Hillary storyline, asking her about the VP vetting process on c&l. It was precious. “NO! I’m not going to walk you through the decision. It’s a confidential process.”
By this choice has has still not overcome his weakness on womens issues etc.
I can’t wait to see Tuesday’s Daily Show.
Media to Christy Hardin Smith: Research? We don’t need no stinkin’ research.
Yep. If I croak, then you energy companies can rest assured that there is a young and pliable placeholder who is extremely friendly to Big Oil. She can hold down the fort until Jeb gets here…
And we’ll sell it as pro-woman. Genius.
hey, when your Stylebook is produced by Fisher-Price, and you never got your much deserved shot at that Cheerleading scholarship . . .
I told my wife Palin looks like McCain’s daughter.
My wife said Palin looks like McCain’s granddaughter.
I can’t wait to see Tuesday’s Daily Show.
IIRC, TDS is doing shows *this* week Tuesday through Friday. So he should be on it tonight.

Christy,
Thanks for your “reporter on the beat” perspective. I guess the news organizations just live on conflict, and if they can’t find any, they have to imagine it. Or, like you suggest, just read RNC oppo blast faxes and grant them a credibility they don’t deserve.
Bob in HI
It’s good to hear your viewpoint from being there, Christy, because from in front of the TV screen it reminded me of nothing so much as professional wrestling.
If there IS a substantial bounce in Obama’s approval ratings after the convention, and it maintains it self post-Palin, I think it’s due entirely to 20-million-plus Americans getting to see Obama himself, instead of the Blabb-o-sphere’s snide, snarky “analysis” of him.
And I want to say this to the “historians” (the Michael Beschlosses and Doris Kearns Goodwins and the like) who show up on PBS’ NewsHour comparing this race to past ones: Draw whatever historical parallels you will, there has NEVER been an election (in MY memory, at least, and I’m going back fifty-plus years) in which “the Media” has been so forcefully arrayed against the Democratic nominee with hokey “analysis,” invented issues to ‘critique’ the candidate over, trumpeting cheap Drudgian smears as if they had substance, criticizing the Democrat (in Babington’s case) for the speech he DIDN”T give, just to have something negative to say. And that makes your “historical perspective” essentially worthless, I think.
I’ve never seen a media so determined to put aside “just-the-facts” reporting in favor of superficial “analysis,” “memes,” and superimposed false narrative. It’s what they do now, apparently. And it can still beat Obama no matter how bad a candidate McCain ends up being.
And THAT, in my view, is why it’s time to take on not only McCain but the media narrative that supports him (at ‘the Democrat’s’ expense). Hopefully Obama can do this via the FCC when he gets elected (er, IF he gets elected). In the meantime, it’s up to us, partly–LTE’s and pushback e-mails and whatever else it takes.
No doubt. I agree. Said something about that over at EW’s this AM.
His choice has eliminated the “inexperienced” argument against Obama and does not say much about his own decision-making skills.
That’s how you lose a debate. You make a big stink about an issue (here, inexperience) and then “embrace” (inexperience) in your most important decision in the campaign?
Even if there is a show tonight, Palin won’t be on. Writing is in the morning on yesterday’s news followed by rehearsals & filming in the afternoon. At least I think that’s the schedule. But I’ll watch. They might be able to slip something in at the last minute.
my gawd, can MSNBC get more gushy-excited over Mrs. Palin’s Miss Congeniality speech?
Where’s the Friday-news-dump mentality when you need it?
It *is* kinda fun, though, listening to Repubs come on the air and simultaneously espouse that they don’t know much about her, but still, ya know – SHE’S GREAT !!
For those of us who couldn’t be there, CSPAN was the only way to watch this convention. We got to see exactly what was happening at the podium. We enjoyed hearing from Democrats — and some great Blue America candidates too! And, finally, we were spared the gasbags telling us what we should think. For the politically sophisticated, well-educated FDL political observer — and aren’t we all? — watching MSNBC or CNN was painful and unnecessary.
Their stupid narratives entirely unsupported by facts on the ground, their presumption to know what we should think and feel, their idiocy about what to expect — breathless, groundless, and fact-free.
Sorry Rachel, sorry Keith — you were hanging with a bad crowd. I couldn’t keep the television tuned to either CNN or MSNBC for more than fifteen minutes at a time. There’s a lesson here for you for the 2012 conventions. Learn it, please.
Boy! I’m sure hopin’ that’s the way that ball bounces vs. the “just ’cause she’s a woman” meme.
Same old, same old from the Republicans.
NRA, anti-choice, looks over substance.
They are really stuck in a rut.
Debbie Wasserman Shultz, that Dem PUMA who was all over TV with the PUMA’s, says:
Wasserman Schultz was a strong backer of Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries and is known for her interest in women’s issues. She told Mitchell,
Tone deaf much, John?
Oh thanks, jayt!
Oh! someone downstairs just predicted that line! Good job Debbie!
GOPs have hurt feelings over the choice:
“They now know that they were used as decoys, well after McCain had decided not to pick them,” one Republican involved in the process said.
Certainly, branding him a maverick, outlaw, motorcycle dude with a moose hunter by his side as they Iditarod into the sunset.
“Does the RNC still send out oppo blast faxes?”
Yes.
This was another edition of simple answers……..
Hi Christy,
Divide and conquer strategy doesn’t seem to be working but speaking of divisions why are those clowns not talking about separate conventions in St paul, 20% + Repug Senators MIA, etc.
An obvious line. Glad someone used it soon, and think Biden should work it into the debate.
Exactly. Remember what Bill Clinton said about Obama’s first presidential choice of picking his VP was sound? Well, same principle applies to McCain only with opposite conclusion.
Thanks, Christy;
Hope you are home, safe and sound, to Peanut’s great delight, one is certain.
Of the media mewlings …
Enough!
I’m tired of Palindronic discussions and appreciate the change of subject.
If I may go OT for a moment with a couple questions:
Who has witnessed a better Dem convention than we have seen over the past few days?
Who, in far too-many years, has heard Dems speak, out loud and in public, to critical and desperately important issues, affecting you and me, all of us, as we have over the past few days?
I regard these things as far more important than ANYTHING Mc$ame or the MSM, for that matter, might do or spew garbage about.
Last evening something fundamentally important happened and people all over the nation were caught up in and became a part of it.
It is a very good beginning …
Let us, wisely, not too quickly move away from understanding (and savouring) this truth.
DW
That predictor would have been me.
Downstairs, blub points out that the evangelicals love this VP choice. that might be who McCain is trying to please. who knows?
Obama was brilliant to try and head off any cultural divide in the campaign in his speech last night on gun control, unwanted pregnancies, etc. imho.
Teddy, I watched some on CSpan and some on MSNBC. Didn’t think it was too bad.
Wonder who McInsane would pick as Miss Buffalo Chip…Cindy or Sarah?
They were both “beauty queens” after all.
Fantastic good news!
McCain is not a maverick, he is a loose cannon.
Thanks. I was too lazy to go back and look.
Good one! (eCAHN) :]
Beauty queens are the only type of woman that Rs would vote for.
You’re welcome.
There was one or two Clinton supporters on C-Span that said Obama hadn’t talked to them yet. I guess McSame’s camp took that literaly. Any one that is involved in this party so much that they would go to the Dem convention is NOT going to turn around and vote for the Dems opponent. Just crazy thinking. But maybe the Dems are very smart and put that 18 million candles floating out there to fool the GOP and they took the bait.
Seriously though,
I asked downstairs and I ask again:
Is there actual empirical scientific evidence that the PUMAs represent a block that is available to McCain or is this a Harold Wolfson pipedream?”
My and apparently Christy’s anecdotal evidence says that, while some Hillary supporters are angry and disappointed, they won’t ever vote for McCain.
It is similar to my personal feelings about Kerry in 2004. I was heavily involved in the Dean campaign and thought he got screwed over by Kerry surrogates in Iowa, New Hampshire and Washington State. It took me a long time to come around from that, but in the end, I voted for Kerry without holding my nose.
Dear Lord Jesus, I do not often speak with you and ask for things, but now, I really must insist that you
help me winhelp me help Senator McCain win the election because I deserve it and Barack Obama doesn’t, or any Democrat, as you well know. I realize that it was your divine hand that put me in Alaska — near Russia! — and made me have five children, all of whom I dearly love, and now I’m asking that you go that one last mile and make sure to put me in office where I belong so that I may carry out your will on earth as it is in heaven. Amen, Tracy Flick PalinGallup has Obama up 8% today and Rasmussen has his gaining about 5%. Apparently, this doesn’t take into account last night either.
As Obama’s campaign manager said the other day though, national tracking polls are useless and they pay no attention whatsoever to them. Plouffe emphasized the targeted grassroots activities they’re doing of which he said Obama is doing extremely well in their research. Never hear the guy be so confident before…almost trash talking.
Looking good I think!
PUMAs?
As I replied to you downstairs:
No there is no evidence of PUMAs other than the McCainStreamMedia trying to make believe they exist outside the rantings of a few people. Within the Democratic Party at least.
However, although the McCainStreamMedia has not spent a lot of time reporting it, the Republican Party does have a fairly serious PUMA problem. Called Ron Paul and his supporters.
The media support McCain more strongly than his party does. This is why his fundraising has been so anemic and he was forced into public financing. It is also why he ended up with such a weak VP choice. No one else wanted the job either because they see November as a looming disaster, because they don’t like McCain, or both.
The media came to the convention with their narratives already written and they were not going to let anything like the facts get in their way. This is something they picked up from the Republicans. While party disunity was vastly overblown, the media didn’t care. It was their story and they were sticking with it.
PUMA = Party Unity My A**
Supposed name of dis-affected HRC supporters. Mainly a concoction of Republican strategists and trolls hoping to disrupt things for the Democrats.
Because that would involve actual reporting.
SATSQ
yeah.. I linked a few fundie websites downstairs. This smells like a deal to me. Turns out they’ve been pleading for Palin for weeks, and unlike the mainstream wingnut news sources, which were clearly taken by surprise, the fundie/evangelicals seem to have jumped right on top of this with press releases and supporting material. They were clearly tipped up off about this. My guess is that a deal was made to bring McSame valuable endorsements from those recalcitrant fundie/evangelical leaders who, to date, have been on the fence about Mr 8 More Years.
38 million heard Obama’s speech on TV.
Good luck, John!
Plunger’s prediction…12 million.
rofl!!!
(i’ve had that bookmarked forever, and was waiting to use it, perfect timing tw.)
daah daah daaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
bbl. errands.
Thanks.
Just had a thought…
Maybe all this pumping of the made-up (for the most part) PUMA story is backfiring. Maybe McInsane felt this fake “divide” is bigger than it actually is, and this helped him decide on Palin. Now, the Repub party is going to splinter, and all McInsane gains in PUMAS will be far outweighed by all those he’ll lose now.
“They now know that they were used as decoys, well after McCain had decided not to pick them,” one Republican involved in the process said.”

Hey Gov Palen Dick Cheney is looking for an invite to go wolf hunting in Alaska. His note said have helicopter will travel

Now tell us what ya *really* think. *g*
How’re the furry kids?
NPR had on religious right yet to be indicted crook Ralph Reed on talking up the Palin selection.
Did not watch the presser with McCain and Palin. However, have heard outtakes of Palin on the radio.
Is it me or don’t they need to get her a voice/sppech coach pronto?
New rethug mouth on tv – Gov Palen stopped the bridge to nowhere
Strike A Pose . . .
…thank dog Obama’s the one with the celebrity problem :D
Last night some one said Obama was up 10 pts.
so, the pta/soccer mom contest winner from the campaign spoke today at mccain’s rally.
oh, waht? she’s what? does what? naaaaaaaawwwwww, really.
well, she and cindy can compare personal grooming tips and colorists.
that’ll be nice for cindy to have a gal pal in washington to shop with.

“had an Anchorage broadcasting career” ?….on what outlet?
And Mcsame wasted 3 months not getting his candiate out there and known by the public. He is just so slow… They have 6 weeks. They are kidding themselves.
Is that for real, or photoshopped?
She was a part time sports announcer and part time fisherperson. She has a degree in journalism
Seeing pictures of them together, am I the only one who gets a creepy old man vibe from McCain?

she was for it before she was against it
They would, but one of the cardinal rules is that the VP shouldn’t outshine the presidential candidate…
Thanks – saw that after I posted this.
I find myself energized after last night’s speech, as well as this colossal and monumental blunder of selecting Palin; I have been in comment and blog overdrive since early this morning.
The reaction to the speech is what really is exciting me. If Alex Castellanos and Bill Kristol are praising the speech, it must really have been effective.
I’m willing to bet a round at beer thirty that it’s PhotoShopped.
Much better than looking at Cheney.
My sources within one of the 7 Sister Foundations says the same – they were tipped off last night around 9-10 pm and started concocting the spin after that.
Nope. I didn’t carefully watch the whole thing, but we had it on except when we switched to check the weather, and there was nothing but tight shots of the stage and of each of them making their way through the crowd.
That was to cbl2 @ 68
Central Headquarters being Larry Johnson’s site. Talk Left has a bunch of ‘em too.
Another Palin cover
Pat Buchanan on MSNBC called it one of the greatest convention speeches he’d ever heard and was praising it so effusively and pulling quotes from it, they had to break for a commercial to get him to be quiet.
Mrs Greenspan said that she didn’t believe it could have been at all better.
Wow. The Obama also-rans were clearly enjoying being decoys, because the campaign is leakproof enough to let them know. McCain had to screw over everyone on his shortlist to get the same effect for one day.
Just trying to avoid being a naive boob.
With this pick, the republican convention is going to have all the excitement of watching grass grow
Christy: I think for once the Right Wing
Circle JEcho Chamber has worked AGAINST them. I believe McCain picked Palin out of an exaggerated perception of how divided the Clinton voters are from the rest of the Democrats. The GOP drank their own Kook-Aid, and they’ve pretty much pooched their chances in this election. Undecided voters are NOT going to want a completely inexperienced VP just one aged heartbeat away from the Presidency…The wingnuts love her. Will they love her enough to get behind McCain, though? The Magic 8 Ball says “Reply Hazy – ask again later.”
Why can’t McCain close the deal with his own party?
John McShame really has his eye on that buffalo chip contest trophy
Chisty: Hope and Change policy in the short.
A book by the Environmental Defense Fund Directors, Earth:The Sequel describes the venture capital players and what sustainable technologies that they have invested in.
One is cleaning the emissions in the stacks of the coal plants that are providing 50% of our electricity. Another is Solar Thermal like what is being installed in Carrizo Plains.
Mirrors reflect light on water pipes to generate steam at 750 degrees. That drives turbines in some already natural gas plants that have existing turbines. Then new ones that are not on the grid but will be built as part of the new job programs.
Wind, algae from plant by products to convert more fuel. Wave power is the largest power source next to solar.
The book describes the research and development history of these sources and how the Europeans are ahead as Bushco has not funded any serious effort so offshore manufacturers are in position to supply hardware,
Most of the capital that is sent to oil producers will be staying here as we convert off of big oil and that is available on line in USA balance of payment figures.
Universal healthcare will provide us with coverage so businesses could be relieved of that burden which will help middle class business models to be more successful.
Tax loop holes on and offshore will be closed bringing in trillions. The Bush tax cuts will be reversed and those in the $200K income and above will be contributing much more to level the playing field they have had under Bushco.
The payroll taxes from these green industry jobs will add more income as reemployment occurs. Then the end of NAFTA and “free trade” which offshore our jobs will have some penalties and protective tariffs to aid our own manufacturing base.
all of this plus the stopping the out of control defense spending for Iraq will stop that bleeding the government coffers. The effort will be capitalized by the money that is not spent on the war. That does not go offshore for oil. We will stop borrowing from China and invest in America. Converting gas stations to compressed air and electric recharge stations for the new green fleet of transportation will provide opportunity for new business model as public utilities invest in solar farms to supply the increased demand for electricity.
New compressed air cars will be available next year for $16,000.00. Light rail like Portland’s system will be in the works as more people take trains. Rebuilding our existing infrastructure will. Also building low cost housing for those that cannot pay for middle class homes is a big capital project through a National Housing Trust Fund.
Finally the dollar, under Bushco policies, has lost 50% of it’s value and that will reverse and become stronger than the Euro under a federal reserve policy that is fiscally sound. Along with regulatory oversight on the markets that have skinned investors and homeowners alike.
There is your Hope and Change policy in the short.
DOn’t be so sure. Watch the threat level colors start strobing and listen for noise from Georgia-Russia as McCain stands proudly as an ex-POW.
I hate to be the one to tell John-boy McSame, but this isn’t about getting a date for the prom.
Yes, Cindy can’t dance and is getting a bit rough around the edges, but that’s no reason to dump her now.
After all, she’s got the money. C’mon John-boy, money will last longer than one more foxtrot.

Wasilla’s new Mayor asks officials to quit
The newly elected mayor of Wasilla has asked all of the city’s top managers to resign in order to test their loyalty to her administration.
Mayor Sarah Palin sent the resignation requests Thursday to Police Chief Irl Stambaugh, Public Works Director Jack Felton, finance director Duane Dvorak and Mary Ellen Emmons, the head of libraries. The fifth director John Cooper who over the city museum, resigned earlier this month after Palin eliminated his position.
Christy,
If you’re going to Minneapolis, keep your eye out for a large group of alienated wealthy Mormons leaning towards Obama.
s’okay. me too.
she did pose for Vogue, but I am checking that make sure that cover isn’t shopped. Why in the world would Vogue allow a photograph with those glasses ?
It is so unfair to be an innocent victim of Hurricane Gustav. It could delay the Neo-con Convention next week. Is there a curse on them? Is God punishing his most loyal servants with a Category 5 Hurricane? Karl Rove never gets any breaks. Color me sad.
Yes, but this is REALLY creepy old man:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRSmaSW0hgE
Gotta be the funniest clip so far to me this campaign season. Notice how bored the teenaged girls are behind McInsane, and then the awkwardness when they go nuts for the rapper.
Funny thing…in searching for this clip, I first tried the AP “Assorted Pastries” vid, and they edited out the awkward moments of McInsane standing there like he doesn’t exist…at his own rally!! Does Ron Fournrove edit the AP video as well?
Even raising threat levels is not going to raise the excitement temperature of their convention. They have never been excited about their candidate and the issues are really against them. Okay maybe not as exciting as grass growing…more like paint drying
Someone need to get over to Wikipedia and update their page on Palin. What’s there now was clearly vetted by the RNC before the announcement.
Because you know most of the corporate media won’t do much more research than checking wikipedia.
It is about them – to hell with New Orleans
Cover seems to have been shopped. According to this, the article came out “modest.”

I don’t think the PUMAs are gonna go for the woman that gets animals killed for oil and sport.
Strike A Pose . . .
oh gawd. that’s beautiful.
What a fantastic campaign poster that’s gonna make – with that pic alongside John McCrazy’s.
Hey, if somebody doesn’t make it – I will…. *g*
Does anyone have inside info about when McC made the choice of Palin? It seems rather last minute to me.
I could be wrong.
“Why can’t McCain close the deal with his own party?”
They don’t trust him. During the primaries, I heard some of my GOP acquaintances refer to him as a “traitor.” (Why I don’t know, must have something to do with Vietnam).
My batsense says that, when push comes to shove that a lot of GOP base will actually ending up staying at home come November. This happened to Bob Ehrlich here in Maryland – a lot of fundies stayed home because they felt he had betrayed them when he fired a pro-lifer from a DHHS position, but I’ve heard it on right wing radio as well as from several wingers that I know. [with the caveat that this is anecdotal evidence, of course]
This is just like Quayle in ‘88, a “dog-whistle” candidate for the fundies. The choice is straight out of Lee Atwater’s playbook, only it’s 2008, not 1988 and the country is much more of a mess now than it was then.
It appears to have been shopped. See my 108 link.
I didn’t see any pan shots of Nutter center during McBush’s appearence. However, I drove by the Nut at lunch and I know what the parking lots look like when the show is packed (I was there for Elton John, among others). If they filled it, a LOT of folks came in by bus.
Boxturtle (Possible that the Busses were parked at the bottom of the hill, I didn’t check there)
She doesn’t have any foreign policy experience, per se, but McCain remembers when Alaska was part of Russia so he figures maybe she can help diffuse the Georgia situation.
ugh. That makes sense. This is not good…. it looks like the whole Palin thing is nothing less than a well-scripted, concerted attempt for McSame to bring the fundie/evangelical base back into play. But then, why not Huckabee? Or maybe the Christianists said Huckabee and McSame’s people pushed back with Palin as an acceptable alternative? They must’ve cut this deal since that religious summit he had a couple of weeks ago, and then, as you said, leaked it late last night to give them time to react. Interestingly, the wingnut press was kept out of the loop, altogether. This was a private deal.
Sadly, it is a photoshop, some Alaskan hippy bloggers, fed up with her celebrity
eCAHNomics, you copy ?
Last night before Obama’s speech after Rove and co. vetoed the choice of short ride.
McCain is hard to trust, even if you want to. He’s all over the lot on every issue, including torture.
The cable TV crawlers should read:
Does John McCain Take the United States Seriously Enough?
Sitka Sentinel 1996 Oct 28
Palin said she made the request for resignations to find out who supports her as mayor.
…
Palin, who ran on a platform of cutting government, has faced a rocky transition to power since beating longtime Mayor John Stein…
…several department heads supported him during the campaign.
She has been critized by the local semi weelky newspaper for a new policy requiring department heads to get the Mayors approval before talking to reporters. An editotial in the Frontiersman labeled it a “gag order”.
Palin said it is a temporary rule to smooth the way until department heads have a better sense of the administrations policies.
…
Sadly, it is a photoshop, some Alaskan hippy bloggers, fed up with her celebrity…
oh.
otoh, who cares? That would still be one great campaign poster… *g*
“But then, why not Huckabee?”
To well known – they needed a “dog whistle” candidate; think Dan Qualyle as I stated above.
Yes. See my 108 link too.
The glasses were one of the giveaways, bt was suspicious that someone interested in a political career would pose that way. Anything is possible, though, so I didn’t dismiss it out of hand.
The info came from ancestry dot com in the newspaper section. Subscription required to view it.
Hey another decider
and I would think that, if she was in fact a Beauty-Pageant contestant, it’s only a small matter of time until there are some pics from that too.
Lawd, gimme a swim-suit shot !!
if this ploy works, it changes the numbers game considerably against Obama. Not good.
Can anyone confirm if she was actually born in a hospital, or was she just created from one of Dick Cheney’s ribs?
what “talent”? free throw shooting?
It’s much more cynical than that – while he might have had his own opinion about numerous things, he has decided that being President comes above everything else and has adopted every single Republican position.
It shows that McCain is much worse than someone who is a maverick, he’s a complete and utter sock puppet.
I think that MSM’s hilighting of the PUMAs is all about money. The Dems know better. The pollsters who are feeding the accurate info to McBush know better. Likewise, the MSM is getting accurate info.
But if they told the truth, the GOP donors would fold and say “See you in 4 years, we’ll need the money for lawyers”. They’re close to doing that, anyway.
Boxturtle (As long as you keep raising, the other side won’t show their cards and nobody will know you’ve lost)
For me this is the most interesting aspect of McCain’s choice. Rather than making a choice that might help him in the general election or later in governance, he had to make a major play to shore up his base. All of the talk that this will rope in Hillary voters is mostly wishful thinking. This was about the fundies.
So why do the media pundits keep pimping the divided storyline?
Everytime Booman, Sirota, or some other sore winner wrote another anti-Hillary screed the story was kept alive.
Working on it, but here’s the 1984 contest pic.
http://www.chris-spangle.com/2…..uty-queen/
Not good? I think it’s great for us. She has no experience and has to debate Biden. Nobody knows her. I’ll bet before today that you couldn’t find one person outside Alaska who would know. They don’t have time to bring her up to speed and McC isn’t either so it’s going to be popcorn time for me.
cnbc going to have an interview with palin at 4et, done a few days ago.
what “talent”? free throw shooting?
could be. Everybody loves a good point guard. *g*
I’m not seeing ANY benefit from that choice here in Ohio. She’s going to have to work a bit to keep it from costing votes, she has none of the strengths that made Hillary popular here.
Boxturtle (If McBush loses Ohio, he loses)
Here’s the person who owns up to the photoshop job.
and mccain would never choose someone smarter than he is, keepthatin mind.
It seems that I’m not the only one searching for her swimsuit pics. Think I’ll give it a rest & wait for someone else to find them.
Y’all are gonna enjoy this one:

gooper ‘keyword’ today-
enthusiasm, perrino even quoted bush using it.
Correction: If McBush loses Ohio AND the votes are all counted, he loses.
All that’s true, but dbaker, dosidi and I were speculating here (I think) about what seems to me to an apparent deal between prominent clerical leaders who had, up until now, been on the fence about McSame and the his campaign, to bring them back into the fold with an on-the-plantation VP choice, Palin. If this, and those long withheld endorsements come through, you could be looking at a situation where large numbers of voters in their camp, who I’ve been counting on staying home, actually showing up to vote. Which is bad. This may not have been a play at moderate or women voters at all, but rather an attempt to get Focus on the Family and the like back on board.
gooper==more executive experience than obama…….(oh my, they’re pushing her experience).
audacious for them to attack this woman./end
If I were the current Mrs. McBush, I’d be really nervious knowing how I met McBush and knowing how much time a President and VP spend in private together.
Boxturtle (Perhaps Obama isn’t the only one thinking change)
I disagree. The choice of Palin shows that Steve Schmidt and Karl Rove are all on board the McCain train.
As was proven in 2006, the 2004 strategy of energizing the “base” and dragging enough “independents” along failed spectacularly. Rove is arrogant enough to think that 2006 was an anomaly.
They, as well as the mainstream press, are completely underestimating the GOTV effort of the Obama campaign because they don’t understand it. Rove is aware of it, as I said in an earlier comment – hence the shenanigans with the DOJ and “voter fraud.”
In short, this is a choice of misplaced hubris as well as being an anachronism. Dubya is no Reagan and the country is a much different place, also because of technology and information sharing, than it was in 1988.
What will be important is to get the information out there that Palin is a fundie, without triggering the Christianist “persecution” complex. A delicate balance, but one that I think the Obama campaign is capable of.
Vogue readers might remember her
No swimsuit, yet. But here’s a nice dance.
I don’t think you’re talking about more than 30% or maybe 35% of the vote. Frankly, I don’t think anyone could have helped McC. And I don’t think many Repubs who are well-known wanted to.
Yeah, being the Mayor of a “city” of 5k to 8k in size is gonna offer a LOT of executive experience. /s
Having grown up in a town of 5K, I will state pretty much categorically that there’s no way that experience would qualify for the VP. Only in Alaska I think is it qualifying to be governor.
60 Minutes did a feature on her not that long ago…check the CBS website? Expect to see it aired this Sunday…I recall it being pretty fluffy.
Not photoshopped
and alas, first runner up
You have some interesting observations. I think the political landscape has changed dramatically since last century.
Democrats got themselves into trouble with Korea and Vietnam, and Republicans took advantage as the alternative to “military adventurism.” Now the tables have turned and contrary to what it may seem to many of us, I think in the end, Americans are a peace-loving people by-and-large.
Perhaps, Obama is our Eisenhower.
Get the gal a minder, we don’t need Sewards Folly reverse engineered; Alaska reverts to Russia and they get 15 billions to take it. The fools have done it before.
The fundies, and the West.
Pollster.com has a good interactive map for tracking the polls, state by state. Over the last two months or so, when you add up the electoral college numbers, Obama has been bouncing around between 260 and 300, while McCain has been hurting just to break 175.
McCain has to run the table on Obama, and poach some states that are leaning his way. Palin helps with Alaska, of course (which is too close to call, after having been strong GOP in earlier polls), and he’s likely hoping that the independent-minded spirit of Alaskans will play well in states like Montana, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico.
But the fact that McCain, a westerner himself, does not have the West in hand *already* when he’s running against a politician from Chicago and another from DE/PA . . . that’s gotta hurt.
That really restricts his options.
For my computer to view that site, it wants to go into a less secure mode. Is it worth the risk?
hope everyone saw what Our Great Leader Kos had up – immediately following Babblington’s screed.
scrawled before Obama finished
What’s the ratio? For McCain it seems to be at least 2 minders/candidate.
Indeed, but the problem is that McCain has to do two things which are diametrically opposed – (1) shore up the base so that they don’t stay home and (2) appeal to independents by showing he’s a maverick.
With this choice, they thought they could pull it off with a Hail Mary. Choose a “dog whistle” candidate a la Quayle, while saying he’s a maverick since he chose someone the MSM didn’t know.
The problem is that his cleverly conducted image of being “experienced” got completely thrown out the window. My sense is that Obama’s choice of Biden and the subsequent bounce because of that choice sealed the deal. They only have about 8 weeks left to concoct a new image – choosing someone with no background or baggage at all makes that easier.
In short, McCain’s people are being too smart by half and are going to fail spectacularly.
site said ‘forbidden, i didn’t have permission”.
nah. Huffpo has a slide show with it in their headline
McCain is a carpetbagger westerner isn’t he.
This is good, from Hunter at KOS.
yeop, and i meant to say a woman smarter than he is. lol.
A tantalizing storyline– but where does Cindy fit in?
Found this on that link
He was a military kid growing up, finishing in VA. He’s been in Arizona since 1981, which is long enough to have the “carpetbagger” rep disappear.
Of course, in the south, where folks consider third generation born people “newcomers,” things are measured differently.
Thx.
As promised, a flickr page of pictures we took yesterday at Mile High.
Big shout out to MrsCO, aka Oxocube303, and her Mad photoediting skilz;

yep. the dog catcher has more pull in a small town than the mayor.
Just sent an email to my hunter friend asking him if he’s gonna vote for his fellow hunter. He’s a D, so I expect a clever retort.
Nice shots. Thanks. Can you tell me who sat in those things that look as if they have a cover on them – a tent-like thing?
They actually shoot late afternoon. We attended the taping on Wednesday, so they could get something in. The news broke about 9:30 this morning, mountain time.
Thanks for that
Corporate Media.
headline on Yahoo: “Analysis: Palin’s age, inexperience rival Obama’s “
Betcha know who wrote that without even clickin’
I actually think that he was going to go for Pawlenty or Romney until that speech last night. That changed everything.
Right. 11:30 ET makes it a really close call to write, rehearse & film late afternoon. And her appearance, which provides the best grist for the comedy mill, didn’t happen until about an hour later. But we’ll see.
somewhere in Minnesota, wacko GOP congress-critter Michele Bachmann is upset. “Damn it, even I have more experience than this lady!”
Is it common to become Mayor and ask all of the city’s top managers to resign? Is it common practice to make a policy to have department heads get permission from the Mayor before speaking to reporters? Palin did this when she became Mayor of Wasilla. See my previous posts.
Maybe she is Cheney reicarnated.
i’m REALLY wondering about that, i taped it, gonna rewind and look right now…..
nutter center is an arena at wright state university……my scoop cup for dog/cat food is a nutter center cup….i got suspicious when they said 15,000 attended……like they got that number from the nutter center website…..saw alabama there, sister’s treat….have to admit, they were kick ass good….really great musicians, i had doubts.
anyway, seems like SOMEONE would have had a shot of all of the people, but they kept it tight…..the way the arena is laid out wouldn’t have been able to show the crowd outside the center staging without showing empty seats.
Well, if they follow through on this, then for sure, for the first time in U.S. History, one of the occupants of the White House will be from a New State (Hawaii or Alaska).
Of the four candidates for Pres/VP, 3 are from the West (Hawaii, Alaska, Arizona) and only one from the East (Delaware).
Next thing you know, they’ll move the Capitol from Washington, DC, to Denver.

Next thing you know, they’ll move the Capitol from Washington, DC, to Denver.
that’d be great, so long as nobody informs the members of the present Congress….
somewhere in my reading today, I read where once she became Mayor, she created a vice mayor position and then filled it with gooper crony – are you seeing that ?
Palin…a creationist and pro-lifer. And who opposed her own Republican Lt. Governor’s push to declare the polar bear an endangered species. Palin considers them “varmints”.
Hillary said we needed “Science, Science, Science”…
This Palin gal sounds like a fundamentalist cheerleader from some remote isolated “lost world”.
The similarities are creepy.
Lieber.5man and the other senator, McCain will take no information from anything less.
Good Gawd, we have ozone alerts over here way to often already
CHS:
You don’t want to read Milbank today. I don’t mind his snottiness usually, as he dishes it out to both sides, but this was so petty and dishonest and detached from any of true feel anyone could have gotten from the speech, whether you were at the stadium or at home, like myself.
He made fun of the columns.
Please give him some shit, people.
…and RG Joe is silently sobbing into his hanky….
Dude, one week was enough!
…Mittster’s dogs are keeping a very low profile today….
Ron Fournier
What’s my prize?
I’m still seething over the David Brooks column. F*cking arrogant git.
boxturtle, thanks for the crowd parking info……
“if I were only younger, prettier, or a real Repubican – oh, wait”
Brooks is still seething over not being the “cool kid” at school so he’s taking it out on the tall, handsome, charismatic basketball player.
oops..I think you spelt “info-taintment” wrong.
It’s tainted, to say the least.
Funny you should mention Joe crying.
It’s just amazing to me how the talking heads don’t realize it is not necessary to talk all the time, split screen everything and generally just get in the way of the message. I watched on the HD Democratic Feed or CSPAN and got so much more out of the convention. I wasn’t interested in their opinions of the speeches or presentations and I didn’t miss them at all.
McCain picking Palin… Country First my ass!
Yep. One of the legion.
yeah but he probably couldn’t have gotten a date with the beauty queen either.
They haven’t posted it yet (might not), but the tturnstyle count for the Nutt was just under 10K. That includes in and outs, but does not count anybody who came in via the back like McBush. Looks like all three area TV stations had their cameras locked in position, the views are very similar.
So the Nutt was likely about 2/3 full. Not 15K, but his biggest crowd yet.
Boxturtle (Better than I expected.)
Saw him with the sound off on PBS. He wasn’t impressed either, but this is a guy wrote a book about a [made up, it turned out] visit to “real Americana” when he supposedly got in his car and drove to Amish country from DC.
Alterman completely took him apart about that. The man is a complete phony, but because he doesn’t shout and is on PBS, he seems moderate to the non-informed.
I’ve spoken to a number of people who thought the same.
It just scrolled on MSNBC 38 million viewers watched Obama’s speech.
Yesterday I heard 80,000 was at the speech in Denver to see it.
McCain won’t get half as many.
“sound off” meaning I had closed-captioning on. I had switched from briefly watching Fox Noise (where I saw Kristol, of all people, praise the speech), but I so loathe the sound of Sam the Eagle errrr. Britt Hume that I will break my TeeVee because I have thrown a shoe at it sometime.
he’d do anything to be a winner.
I take it Monica Goodling wasn’t available.
It’s funny about Brooks. He was doing commentary for PBS, which I was watching, and he was too much of a pussy to say anything like that out loud in front of his colleagues.
That is the first explanation of the choice that rings true to me.
I saw a lot of empty bleachers in crowd shots this morning.
Our mayor can hire all new department heads. . .
She adds nothing. She will get the vote of my anti-abortion white Catholic relatives, but they were already voting for McSame.
Hiya, pups!
Anything going on today?
I really enjoyed C-Span and never looked at another channel. I have eyes and ears and don’t need to borrow others.
doris kearns goodwin upping palin then slamming palin. had lunch with her/next to her a month ago in anchorage.
msnbc
ET! you’re in the spotlight now!
Here’s another problem for McCain. He’s basically taken the wind out of the sails for his arguments for lower corporate taxation with Palin’s appointment.
Alaska has supported it’s low personal and property tax rates for decades by generating revenues from the sales of oil and gas leases and taxes on oil and mineral production. Palin supported an additional windfall-profits tax that has generated annual revenue on the order of an additional $10 billion.
Palin Taxes The Big Corporations
Yet it’s Obama that argues that the oil companies should have a Federal windfall profits tax…not McCain. He says it deters investment in exploration and drilling…but the tax in Alaska hasn’t reduced the demand to drill more in that state AT ALL.
count in the turnstile count there all of the people who HAD to be there…..and i think it’s low, cuz boehner country, the bastion of republicanism in ohio, is right down I-75…….the biggest event of his campaign and it’s not a full house…..vp announcement. under 10 thou….
nope.
Hey ET! Strangely enough, I was thinking of you earlier today! ;)
thanks
ET,
We need some guest posts soon. You are now THE resident expert and I will appreciate all your insight. JC
Jane’s upstairs
Jane’s upstairs and I think ET is, too.
Just got a call from my wingnut son to tell me he’d just been rearended while at a complete stop. Perps fled before anyone could record their tags. He’s OK & car can be fixed.
The reason for bringing this up is that I asked him about Palin. He thinks it’s a great choice. Her inexperience doesn’t matter cause she’s not at the top of the ticket. Her taking on corrupt members of her own party is just what the Rs need now. And she’ll attract the woman’s vote.
Silence ensued when I started to counter those points, followed by: We’ll talk about this later, which is how our political conversations always end.
But thought you all would be interested in a sample of one wingnut.
Just got back from the golf course. Heard some goopers there talkin about a woman veep candidate who was as good a speaker as Hillary- and who would take away those women who were Hillary dedicated-so I guess this is it? Alaska eh? Could be good for western states- goopers need help in several of em…
Pro life- well OK- they all are- but here’s a weird thing- many of the fundie churches who are strongly pro life also feel strongly that men must lead and women must follow. Wonder if McBush knows that.
Strange that McBush would throw away the “experience” argument- since that was about all he had going for him….Strange pick for my money.
How can he bitch and moan about Obama’s lack of experience if he thinks a two year governor from Alaska would make a good prez? I don’t get it at all.
That “in trouble with the law” bit– how much of that is under the control of the DOJ? And how much is under the control of an independent AG? In other words, will Mukasey be able to squelch any legal proceedings against her?
Bob in HI
McCain’s selection represents a major step forward for the public use of breast-pumps everywhere. Joe Biden better watch out during the debates if she has that infant up on the stage with her!
Then you lost your chance to hear KO rip AP for an irresponsible hack job that it sent out on its national network. Its expected for KO to rip Fox Noise, but kinda unusual to hear him rip a supposedly independent news organization like AP.
Bob in HI
I believe that is all at the State level and the USA and USDoJ would have no jurisdiction
At least the DoJ would have no dealings with the Abuse of power issue where she interfered with her BIL’s job. VECO may have some national aspects though.
