It seems there may be a reason federal law-enforcement officials are not interested in pursuing serious charges against the white-supremacist tweakers who were caught this week in Denver: The man making the decision is a Republican operative. And when it came to a threat against John McCain by a black man, he had a completely different approach.
The AP story describing the official pooh-poohing of the threat gives us a clue:
"We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said in a statement.
But when a black man in prison sent John McCain a threatening letter containing baby powder, it was another story altogether:
The man accused of sending a threatening letter to John McCain through McCain's Colorado headquarters office detailed the contents of his letter in an exclusive interview with 7NEWS Friday.
Marc Ramsey, an inmate in the Arapahoe County Jail, admitted that he sent the letter. On Friday afternoon, the US AttorneyTroy Eid announced Ramsey will be charged with knowingly threatening to harm or kill through the U.S. mail. The charge is punishable up to five years in federal prison and up to $250,000 fines.
"We won't stand for threats of this kind in Colorado," Eid said. "A death threat is not a legitimate form of political expression," Eid said.
Hmmmm. Let's see: Men with rifles, a caches of other guns and ammo, all talking about killing Obama ... they're not a "serious threat." But a man in jail sending baby powder, well, that's a "serious threat."
So, who is Troy Eid?
Looks like Colorado needs to create another pair of binoculars (or a microscope) to look into the political agenda of US Attorney Troy Eid. The veil of secrecy has been lifted and it turns out that Eid's appointment may have had much less to do with competency as a prosecutor than his reliability as a partisan political operative in the eyes of Karl Rove (with the almost certain glowing endorsement of Rove's "mini-me" Dick Wadhams).
Today's Rocky Mountain News report, Allard: Nominee's rejection 'strange' Link fills in a picture of the Rove machine rejecting Allard's firm endorsement of William Leone to stay in the job. He was a veteran prosecutor who had earned Allard's praise as "…an effective federal prosecutor."
Eid feigns ignorance as to why he was selected by the Rove - Harriett Miers justice as political theater team. But, that doesn't hold water under the degrees of separation test. Connecting the dots between Eid, Wadhams and Rove provides a "well, duh!" explanation.
Of course, this is the same administration that has ascertained that eco-terrorists who set houses on fire are the most serious domestic-terror threat facing us ... while abortion-clinic bombers and racist-right thugs have fallen off the radar.

Same-old, same-old.
Another Rovian US Atty. Why am I not surprised?
Hey David.
I’m shocked, simply shocked.
My next thought is, “Who could have imagined”.
But seriously, the Law has long been two-tiered, one level for the wealthy and well-connected and another for everyone else, and those with but little money or clot well know the inner workings of ‘justice’.
But that is a theme for another occassion.
Now we know why at least one U.S. Attorney was able to keep his position after Roves “Night of the Long Knives” firings. A loyal foot soldier in the service of the Republican’s slow fascist coup d’etat.
Scary stuff.
Thanks to DWBARTOO the Digg is open! Pups you know what to do Digg It!
Oh David you actually expected an appointee of KKarl would do anything to protect a Democratic Nominee is just the same as asking the cat to protect the Canary!!

It seems there may be a reason federal law-enforcement officials are not interested in pursuing serious charges against the white-supremacist tweaker
My Bold Did the Tweakers say or do we have information that they were going after Obama Yes or No?
Was the MSM mislead in their reporting lots of Tweakers with guns these days but if they were after Obama and they had guns and were high and drinking then they are a threat maybe not to Obama but to everyone in shooting range.
Or is U.S. Attorney Troy Eid trying to send Stormwatch a message like don’t get caught and we will try and look the other way?
Is Troy trying to scare Obama from campaigning in the South and the West where we have a real shot at wining for the first time in decades?
How do we get U.S. Attorney Troy Eid to do his job?
O/T; Heading out to Mile High in a few. Hope to have a link to a flickr page up sometime tomorrow.
Enjoy the show!
Wake up America, smell the
coffeecrematoriums firing up.So Baby Powder is a Threat to McCain but Obama should not be worried about Tweakers with Guns? There is a double standard for justice in this country.
Stay on it, David. You never know what you might uncover. Good Job.
Speaking of twisting the law, prosecutors recommended a drastically shortened sentence for Abramoff. Wonder what we would have learned if we had an apolitical DOJ?
What does the Obama campaign have to say about this?
That’s disturbing and icky.
Perhaps they are being ‘circumspect’?
The Rovian pus continues to leak from Camp McCain’s quarters.
Now we are going to see an attempt to ruin Obama’s speech by leaks of the McAngry Veep choice.
The media won’t run with the: McCain must be afraid of Obama’s speech if he’s that desperate and low class to try an ruin the night.
-G
Jeez, can’t get away from the Bush DOJ. Screwed till the end.
I have difficulty in knowing how to respond to this. I guess Eid just can’t see what’s so unusual or wrong about a bunch of good old boys getting together to shoot a black man, even if that man is the Democrat’s Presidential candidate. Racism in this context seems to weak a word for his attitude.
Thanks, all. And many thanks to cinnamonape again — he really helped me out on this. This is how the community and the information sharing within it can work so well.
My laptop got fried by a virus yesterday so I’m on EG’s computer right now, so my thread presence this morning is gonna be kinda limited. But I’ll keep checking in.
Go ELF and ALF!!
Can we resentence him if it turns out the AG gave him a deal?
We need mandatory minimum sentences for white collar crimes, rob a liquor store and you do more time than the guy who stole millions.
Also why is the AG suggesting less time? Ralph Reed is still walking around free?
Perhaps they are not sending the right message on law and order African American baby powder a threat, whites guys with guns not a threat.
Stormwatch is going to say that Obama is afraid to prosecute them to the full extent of the law if they get caught.
If you ignore something like this you get a repeat.
Not an excuse but there very well may be laws specifically involving the use of the mail. There are many insane things in the law.
Think Progress linked to an AP article that said the lighter sentence is for helping secure the conviction of others. But I doubt that we know the depth of the corruption.
What Left Wing Bloggers are second:( I thought for sure the Feds were listening to me?
But White racist guys on meth are they even on the Feds radar? The Feds are going to look all kinds of bad if they were targeting ELF, ALF and us instead of racists meth heads if anything happens to Obama.
Lots of Feds could lose their jobs.
excellent catch cinnamonape !
dugg. and I am spotlighting ALL Colorado media like a crazy woman
Yes, David this sad tale needs to be spread from coast to coast, for it is a shame and a true measure of abject failure as well as callous, inhuman hubris.
As Hugh suggests, mere ‘racism’ is hardly sufficient an explanation; this ‘response’ from the ‘authorities’ suggests an even more vile calculation and is evident proof of complete moral failure on the part of federal law-enforcement in this society.
Where is the outrage?
Perhaps on vacation in sunny New Orleans?
Wasn’t ALF the little fuzzy alien who ate cats? Loved that show!
What others?
Peggy Noonan is getting moon bat crazy again. She claims it will be a “Nuremberg rally” presumably without the swaztikas. The stadium, Invesco field DOES NOT have a ceiling. So the words will not be bouncing back but will continue forever into space. Also the DNC does not have the sophisticated thinking of the neo-cons such as Nooner. Michelle Obama’s speech was flawed because she talked about issues.
But the worst thing about the Democrats is they only have sympathy for the needy and marginalized. They do not sympathize about Blackwater, Halliburton and ATT. That is shockingly selfish.
But it may be like Nuremberg under Nazis, there is at least one arrested protestor in leg shackles. Other protestors were merely denied due process. Here are some of the delicate words and sophisticated thinking of the Nooner herself.
If there is a deal we should be able to find out what the deal was after the convictions if our system of justice was transparent.
I want to know why Ralph Reed is walking free and going to McCain fundraisers?
How’d you get a virus? I thought we had discussed that you were going to stay out of trouble.
I have long said that the Two-Party System of Republicans and Democrats is really a One-Party System. You simply MUST be a member of the Two Party System to have a chance for most public offices - the exceptions such as Jesse Ventura are rare enough to prove there rule.
But amazingly, the Republican Cain seems to be trying to slay the Democratic Abel. The Republicans seem to be trying to make this country into an ACTUAL One-Party System. For thirty years they’ve demonized Liberals and more recently Democrats as being anti-American agents working to destroy the nation.
And the people have responded, either eschewing the term “liberal” for “progressive,” if they are inclined that way, or by taking up arms against Liberals and Democrats and in some cases killing Democrats and Liberals for being Democrats and Liberals.
And now we see here that the pernicious politicization of the Justice Department has led to a situation in which it is acceptable to threaten Democrats, but where threatening Republicans is punished more harshly.
The goal seems to be a fascist totalitarian state, ruled in perpetuity by the Republican party.
Given this atmosphere, it will be interesting to see if Barak Obama is allowed to win, or if by wagging the dog or some other method the fall elections are prevented from happening, or simply stolen.
There are also I believe laws about crossing state lines or using a telephone in the commission of a crime so I don’t see the mail angle as a unique aspect.
The baby powder does raise the issue of anthrax and bioterrorism and is far from harmless. But dopes and misfits with guns discussing political assassination (as in the case of Lincoln) is by no means harmless either.
why is there a picture of Kos in blackface and with a beard? :~)
My own added thought is that speeches are delicate; they’re words in the air, and when you’ve got a ceiling the words can sort of go up to that ceiling and come back down again. But words said into an open air stadium…can just get lost in echoes, and misheard phrases. People working the technical end of the event are talking about poor coordination,
My bold
Peggy sounds like she has planned a few Nuremberg rallies herself she seems well versed in the planning details.
Ney and and Dept of Interior Griles. Raw Story has more.

So if the Obama campaign makes an issue of this (and I’m not at all sure they should), how do they do it without the candidate coming off as the dreaded “angry black man”?
As opposed to what - the rich, well-heeled, perfecty content, and insured?
That’s right, Hugh. I have no intention of minimizing the fake-anthrax theat; after all, that’s what Chad Castagena was doing too, and it is a form of terrorism.
The issue is dismissing an equally serious (if not more so) threat in such a specious manner.
Interesting that the source is Nooner. Today on the first 5 minutes on Rush he said that “some people” are saying that the Greek columns at the speech and the big crowds with echoes will bring up Nuremberg and the Triumph of the Will movie images. And that some people say that 1/2 the Obama team is very concerned about it.
Yes, the chief propagandist for the Republicans and movement conseratives is bringing up how much Obama’s speech is like Hitler’s.
Hey do you think that after Obama becomes President that Rush will start treating him and the office of the President with respect? You know like they demanded the Democrats do?
Nah. Me neither.
LOL. Yeah, he and I had a little chat about his eating habits. He decided they were hazardous to his health. *g*
Definitely a great show.
The prosecutors are saying that there are about a dozen more to be charged, but what are the chances that a high level puke like Ralph Reed will be tried by this DOJ? None, I’d say.
F*k Noonan. On second thought…
Great work David and ‘ape.
Sorta OT: Grabbed a NYT dead tree edition again today, and Nagourney-weaver starts his column, which was the most prominent part of text on the front page with, “Barack Hussein Obama…” Then, the other frontpage article about the convention also refers to the Dem nominee with his complete name. No “Sen.” before the name and no context to justify using his full name.
Out of curiosity, I find a McInsane article about his VP pick and sho nuff, it starts with, “Sen. John McCain…” No John Sidney McCain III, and with the proper “Senator” before his name.
Seems small, but this sorta things has deep subliminal impact on much of the general public, especially these dipshits that were just busted. Seems quite purposeful to me, just like the “Democrat Party” thing that a lot of Conglomerate Media is using more and more these days. It’s all about demonizing Liberals and others that might tip over BigMoney’s applecart. Ron Paul supporters have similar feelings, and isn’t it interesting we’ve been able to work with Paul supporters on some political action.
ot–cspan 3 panel on mark twain–roy blount jr on it.
Get Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton to talk about double standards and white man’s justice.
If sending fake anthrax is so high priority, though, why did the FBI toss the anthrax “hoax” letters into the circular file and never follow up?
We’ve got a much bigger problem with semitic-supremacists.
IMHO
Because they knew who did it?
yeah - good idea - that’d work.
You know if the Obama = Hitler story spreads we all know what they expect people do to when they meet this Obama/Hitler, person right?
How close to Inciting violence does Rush have to get? Of course we know that Rush will be 3 steps more subtle, but there are others like Michael Reagan who will come right out and call for the death of people on the air.
I pushed back on this violent rhetoric on talk radio and their response was to deny they said it and then claim that they were just joking. I often wondered what it would take for them to be held responsible for anything that they said, but as long at they make money they will keep saying it. That is the Triumph of the (dollar) Bill.
“high level puke,” the carny’s greatest fear.
The whole world knows that Reed, Norquist et al were in up to their eyeballs, this yet to be charged stuff sounds like BS.
Yep. BS to let Abramoff off easy while placating the masses by promising more charges that will probably never come.
IMO it’s a dogwhistle to the True Believers. The needy, unwell, etc. have obviously incurred god’s wrath and therefore are unworthy of any help.
Ugh. the visual.
Bonkers:
Could you do me a favor and take that article and send it to the copy editor at the New York Times and to the public editor? Ask them if these examples are part of the New York Times style guide? If not, why not.
The New York Times (like most papers) have a style guide that tells them how they are supposed to refer to people and this is clearly a breaking of the rules and if they are doing it differently than for McCain then they are breaking their own rules. Ask them to 1) In the future follow their own style guides 2) Ask them to note it in a CORRECTION in the printed edition.
This is NOT a case of asking them to do anything “PC” you are simply asking them to follow their OWN RULES as stated IN WRITING in their OWN style guide.
Asking a Paper to follow their OWN rules might be asking too much, but if they will have to at least acknowledge WHAT they did and maybe why.
And when you send it could can cc me in the letter. I’d love to see what you come up with.
this yet to be charged stuff sounds like BS.
what? Bullshit from the United States Department of Justice?
Nah, can’t be. I mean, if you can’t trust the DOJ, - ah fuck it - never mind.
Someone else probably already linked to this story, but just in case someone here missed it.

The Buzz About The Bidens. Why Beau won’t be there for his dad.
Baby powder is a threat. Gold Bond, however, is a lifesaver.
Kind of a rash statement.
Peterr is upstairs!
How Much is the Price?
bonkers - not OT at all, it’s all assassination of one kind or another.
Great idea. Probably not gonna happen with me doing considering sked right now, but these are the articles if someone else wants to take it on:
Nagourney…above fold…first words you see on todays paper:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08.....98aNTSnVxA
This was on front page as well. Proper usage in first graph, then full name-no Sen. in third graph. Odd:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08.....f=politics
And what’s with them not having Michelle’s speech and basically any mention of Biden’s let alone pictures in today’s edition. I know it MST vs EST, but is their deadline 11:00pm? Seems awfully early for a major newspaper.
I’m shocked that we haven’t had breaking news of an Al Qaeda # 3 arrest or an increase in the Ridgian color code.
Turdblossom is too busy trying to stuff Mittens down M.C. Dirty Macs throat.

david–you left out that they were meth heads, highly unpredictable what their actions could be and where….in contrast to the other guy being in jail-predictable where he is and what his are.

brain williams interviewing in an area where they are rehearsing tonight’s program and is so loud he can’t do the interviews……now that’s planning.
was asked last night in his role as ‘news director’ about which would be covered next week if hurricane hits new orleans, rebubs or new orleans? gonna have to do split-screen? he said important that coverage for repubs is balanced and the same as dems, but, would have to go with the people of new orleans if that happened, he said.
and did anyone notice tweety’s ‘change’? after the speeches, later, pointing out all of the red meat things that were left out? like he was waiting for it, and since it didn’t happen, threw them out himself……i was transfixed. he was nailing them one by one. one right after another. he was sitting next to keith….crowd was going nuts.

Whenever I read or watch Peggy Newnan, I have a strange urge to see if ther might be some Reign of Terror reenactors somwhwere nearby. I’m not proud of it, but I can’t deny the impulse.
Just a few minutes ago, Representative Waters was on MSNBC asserting that she has some questions about home ownership, management of the banks and the financial services industry, and predatory lending practices. Well, here’s the thing, whenever Congress allows the Chief Executive to lead them around by the nose, to not fight for their right to oversee what the Chief Executive is doing, this is the result. I’m sick and tired of Congress running around acting like the injured party when they capitulated. They
donatedsurrendered their rights and mine to the point that they are now asking why! The nerve! The Congress approved the appointments to public office, the Congress failed to enforce their own subpoenas, the Congress failed to impeach those responsible for the politicization of the DOJ or the mishandling and downright corruption of the intelligence data that led us to a war that most now see as a mistake. And don’t even get me started on FISA! Now it appears they want to know what the new administration will do to solve the problems. Here’s what I think: they want a solution, they should look in the mirror. They want fixes for all these problems, they should roll up their sleeves. They are the designers of the laws; they are the originators of the laws. Quit relying on orders from upstairs. There is no upstairs in this government, GWB notwithstanding! Congressmen and congresswomen are going to be key players in the act of taking back our country. Time to get back to being legislators rather than apologists. As to this post, excellent job, David. Oddly enough the above relates to this comment through the common bond of corruption of the DOJ. This will allow for all sorts of political dirty, despicable tricks like you saw with Gov. Seligman, and also including voter fraud and voter suppression. It was the Congress’ job to oversee this administration and not take no as an answer from the current occupants of the WH. But when you take all your tools off the table, laugh at the one Senator to suggest censure and otherwise abdicate your responsibility, you have to expect things to run amok.
oooooooh. i was planning to watch the R convention, too, but that bit put me off so bad, i just canned that thought.
wow, clips from the repub ‘92 convention, thanks cbl2===
you should watch the repub platform committee meetings from this week, was very interesting….some keep trying to reel the neocons in.

dave, may i just take a moment to reiterate, you are the best writer in blogtopia and yes, i coined that phrase.
your writing is concise, clear, well-structured and it takes the reader exactly down the road from point to point, creating a well-formulated argument.
i wish that other writers who believe in not using one word when ten will do (and i’m not mentioning glenn greenwald by name here) would take a page out of your style sheet.
thanks for your continued work.

I was not going to reply but reconsidered.
Yes it is disturbing and ICKY. It was intended so. It was intended to recall history. A specific era in history. When a certain ideology gained control of a government. The first item on the agenda was to corrupt the judicial system and bend the system to the support of the ideology. Fascist-Nazi Germany did this well, fascist being merging state and corporate direction of government, Nazi was the political party controlling government. The law courts sanctified and executed Nazi political laws alien to traditional law. The concentration/extermination/labor camps were peopled with the victims of the courts. With the courts precedence, all barriers were removed from directly committing designated persons to the camps without the purview of law.
YES the results were ICKY. Many of those responsible were either imprisoned or forfeited their lives for their part of this crime.
I would have thought the mere suggestion would have illuminated the danger present when Law is perverted to ideological purpose. Apparently not, a clear lesson of history is lost, and that too is disturbing and ICKY. What the USA of Colorado just did is disturbing and ICKY, but the nattering nabobs natter on, no investment is taken with the issue.
Maybe Arthur Siber is correct, and there is no recourse to the stupid. I should have never had to write this.
http://powerofnarrative.blogspot.com/
that is if you want to read really disturbing and ICKY.
Since that guy in prison is already f*cked, perhaps we could talk him into sending a letter to Obama with some baby powder in it to see if THAT gets the same treatment as the letters to McInsane.
Would not Troy Eid’s head explode while trying to justify bringing the hammer down hard on such a stunt done by a black man against an insane, fascistic white crazy man (that would be McInsane) while at the same time pooh-poohing the same exact stunt by a black man (no less) against Obama?
Of course, Troy and his ilk would instead let it slide but use it as a symbol of how “even black America isn’t behind Obama!” It’s lose-lose no matter what.
bush, who is a lifetime member of NACN-the New American Century Neocon-movement has done his part, as have the other parts of NACN, Big Energy, Big Arms, Big Media and Big Jesus, to subvert the US Govt. The oligarchs who control NACN have managed, with the willing assistance of the republician party and the current administration, to undermine the basic functions of govt. The VP, IMHO, is one of the architects of this movement to turn the presidentcy into a fascist oligarchy. By denigrating the congress and taking away much of its power with the willing help of the republician majority (2000-2006) they have managed to subvert the powers of govt into assisting the NACN group in its world view of american military dominance made thru invading countries that have natural resources that NACN wants to gain control of. The Iraq invasion has shown the weakness of this group as Iraq is now moving out from under the american thumb. al-Maliki has just signed an agreement with China-rather than with the Big Oil companies that the US brought into Iraq-Last year the Iraq govt rejected a deal pushed hard by the US to pretty much give Big Oil(Exon-Mobil,Shell,BP,Total and Chevron-only 1 of these companies is american based)complete control of Iraq’s oil and give Iraq in return a mere pittance. Iraq has gone further, they demand that the US withdraw by NLT 2011 and also give the Iraq govt the ability to detain, arrest and try american soldiers who violate Iraqi laws. Now still another puppet is trying to break the NACN strings. Afghanistan/american relations are not governed currently by anything other than a 4 page memo that gives the US and NATO all the power that they want. The Afghan president Hamid Karzai, wants the US to either agree to a SOFA-status of forces agreement- or leave. So it begins. What is old-see american and USMC history late 1800’s and early 1900’s in Latin american and the Caribbean basin-is new again. The oligarchs fell in the early 20th century thru excess and hubris, now they want to return.
Uhmmm…Recalling Nazi concentration camps is disturbing. The smell of burning bodies is, well, ICKY. You created the image (or smellage). I just responded to it.
