We’ve been hearing from the Senate leadership since 2006 that Joe Lieberman is "with us on everything but the war." We asked Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin to offer an example a piece of critical legislation the Senate had passed with Joe Lieberman’s assistance. The role of the Majority Whip is to count caucus votes and enforce party voting discipline.
Senator Durbin pointedly declined to answer the question and characterized it as illegitimate, ultimately putting his hand in front of the camera and asking me to account for my whereabouts and clothing as of three o’clock yesterday afternoon, as an example of – from his perspective – putting someone on the spot unfairly.
I’m not so sure he’s used to answering questions from people who do … journalism.
Watch it! Thanks to the Voter Genome Project for the handy flipcam.

Lieberman for VP!
Pachacutec, love it, too funny…
C’mon, Dick! It’s now okay to kick Joe in the nuts (figuratively speaking, mods). The Dems have nothing, NOTHING to lose now.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahaha
he is now IMPOSSIBLE to rehab or PROP UP
I’ve asked this before, I wonder if anyone has an answer
has lieberman voted with us when his vote was the differance?
I know he votes with us when it means nothing, when we can’t pass a fillibuster, but has his vote ever made the differance?
I am led to believe, if his vote makes the differance he has always been on the other side of the aile
Durbin teh sukketh…………….period
What a class act DD is.
Durbin is a tad testy when he is pressed for specifics isn’t he.
Go Pach!!! Fantastic, well articulate, knowledgable questions which our MSM will NEVER be able to emulate.
I was really surprised he got as aggressive as he did.
I had politely thanked him after he put me off, and then he went after me on the “where were you yesterday?” thing. He extended the interview and went off.
He seems to think I was playing gotcha, but I had no idea he could not or would not cite one vote where Lieberman was helpful to the caucus after he specifically invoked his role as Whip and talked about many “key votes.”
It was bizarre.
He also said the question I asked first would have been legitimate or unbiased. I don’t know what one he was referring to, but would that be the one he put off originally as involving too many hypotheticals?
I know these guys have been trained post-macaca on youtube, but you would think someone might have worked with him before taking him into the blogger media area to be a little extra prepared for Lieberman questions, what with Joe speaking at the RNC and VP speculation all around.
What does all this say about how bad the establishment media has been about asking these kinds of questions over the last two years?
Where were you at 3:02 yesterday afternoon. You are asking me to rememember one vote from thousands of votes?
Wow! Shot down in a blaze of hubris. Durbin Deep can’t remember one vote (from thousands). The more (favorable) votes there are, then the easier it is to pick just one. That’s like not being able to name one flavor of ice cream. Durbin, you sucked wind here.
Depressing, I expected a little more from Durbin.
The convention is looking like The Great American Puppet Show.
Didn’t Lieberman spearhead the ‘let’s threaten Iran with war’ non-binding resolution co-sponsored by HRC?
Pachacutec !!!
now wait a minute – go to 30 seconds in, when you introduce the topic or Lieberweasel – he immediately dismisses it and touts Biden (”Biden’s okay”) as if you were talking about RG Joe on the f’ing Dem ticket !
he dissuades you in a right church, wrong pew kinda fashion
speaks volumes on their mindset
not co-sponsored by HRC, Kyl (R – Uranus) was the Co Sponsor
He seems to think I was playing gotcha, but I had no idea he could not or would not cite one vote where Lieberman was helpful to the caucus after he specifically invoked his role as Whip and talked about many “key votes.”
—————–
it is gotcha to those who NEVER,EVER w3ant to be held accountable
your camera scares them as much as a mirror for DRACULA and all other blood sukkkkkkkkkkerz
then he went after me on the “where were you yesterday?” thing.
Any idea what that was supposed to mean?
and (whispering) Pach, I think he’s a little pissed at you….
as my feeble memory serves, no. i think he, and quite a few of the DLC, are Repub moles meant to deliver the Republican Majority Forever. The ticket McCain/Lieberman (which i am betting on) is meant as payment for good behavior – McCain waiting his turn, and Lieberman being a good Repub all this time. Witness after the Lamont primary in CT, when Lieberman lost, all the Rs came out to campaign and finance his CFL run. **hhhck, tooie***
they really are Courtiers,to the king, peons (serfs) must NOT ask pertinent questions of the ruling class
he is their idea of Sammy The Bull Gravano to Reid’s Gotti – weak ass shi*
so is Durbin ,one of our “good guys”? …bletch…wretch
lol
my planet reference was aimed at the gentleman from Arizaona – not you :D
CSPAN doing segment on bloggers at the convention.
they really are Courtiers,to the king, peons (serfs) must NOT ask pertinent questions of the ruling class
We must be *such* a disappointment to them…. *s*
Bravo Pachacutec!
Digg it firepups!
ya, to my memory, if the dems definately win, he votes dem, if the repubs definately win, he votes dem
but if it’s a question, he votes repub
that’s my memory
Durbin’s questions re your socks really confused me; i was wondering if you had egregiously flouted a dress code. i’m finally realizing it is meant as a memory test to put you on the spot to compare with your test of his memory. If he had asked about my socks of yesterday, i would have said, “These socks right here!”
yup,anybody with a)keyboard,b)camera device,c) brain partially functional
Good catch! It never crossed Durbin’s mind that Pach was talking about the Repug ticket. In his mind, Lieberman is still “one of them”.
hard wired to “the script”
holy cow, the republikkkans are commiting suicide now, check this out from think progress;
holy cow, I think they figure since they cannot win they will just get it out there
this is bizarre

Jane’s on CSPAN.
Great video, Pach. You’re really a natural at this. Please keep finding more good opportunities like this one. (It would be great if you could catch Harold Ford, but the number of great questions to ask him would be nearly overwhelming).
rip…accountability
thanks !
I agree – it’s very odd. They must have decided that everyone hates their party so they might as well let the true colors show. I hope it get a lot of publicity.
Jane on Cspan just minutes ago – looking fabulous as evah!
Cannot see the video @ work, but in my experience Durbin’s office gets defensive about not being sufficiently progressive/left. Their point (and it’s not a bad one) is that Durbin has repeatedly taken principaled stands against the grain of his party (his vote against the AUMF is always brought up) and paid a price repeatedly.
Somebody does need to give Durbin a primer on the blogosphere. He doesn’t know squat about bloggers’ concerns and thinks that we are as uninformed as the MSM. He usually votes the right way but he is too much a member of the Senatorial club. And he will look an even riper fool if McCain picks Lieberman for VP.
looking back at our NN dinner where we had the pleasure of meeting Pachacutec – he looks harmless – teehee
That’s part of what makes his videos so good, too. His voice is also perfect.
Geez, I could use another of those great margaritas about now. I just came in from working in the pasture…
Really, those fat cats who own more than one pair of socks don’t share MY values.
Yes, Pachacutec, that is exactly the kind of old-fashioned journalistic question that is not asked enough nowadays. And I think your instinct is correct: he was defensive (and aggressive) because he really was caught off guard, he really doesn’t remember that this is what journalists are _supposed_ to do.
Sorry you had to deal with that, but thank you for doing it anyway (and managing to keep your cool)!
CSpan running Sen. Kerry’s great speech now for those of us who missed it live. ;~D
And thhaaaaaaaaaaat’s the truth.
Yup, Pac. he’s especially not used to answering questions from people he thinks will follow up and call him on his bullshit.
kerry was great, he does need to learn how to let the crowd enjoy what he’s saying though, he was determined to move forward even though the crowd wanted to applaud his content.
but he was really good
I’m glad Biden used that line again: “We need more than a good soldier…” It should become a staple of the campaign.. and they should lose the honor and respect and he’s my friend bullshit.
Amy Goodman doing a great interview with Danny Glover on Link tv
oops. I ended my last 2 comments with the word “bullshit.” Gotta work some variety in there.
Wait a minute, socks come in pairs? I’ve only got one.
My favorite part thus far is Kerry introducing Obama’s uncle seated with the stunning next First Lady to warm and sustained applause.
Waxmen up next on Democracy now – he’s calling on Obama to cancel blackwater contracts
Thank you, Pachacutec;
So many ’substantive’ dems are revealling themselves as, how to politely put this?, hmmm … as total jerks.
Why Durbin his-own-self could occupy a huge portion of the kingdom of jerkdom.
And such a serious fool, as well.
By the way, Pach, why would Durbinus most-lame-us ask YOU such a question?
What ever IS going on up there in Denver?
PS: Pach, please don’t scare these timid souls, they are the ‘backbone’ of the ‘opposition’ and shall be the ‘conscience’ of the Obama Presidency.
;~D
What happened to the FDL Twitter box?
I just came up with a thought, I wonder how it would play;
when someone confronts a democrat (or hillary) with the fact that hillary said mccain had experience and obama did not, I think this would get good action;
“experience is a far cry from ability or capability and there is no question obama has far more of both of those then mccain can even claim”
oh man, that would smart me thinks
who’s box is a twitter?
That means you have to wear two day’s worth of socks at once! Ohhh, the humility.
lol, seriously. Durbin could even ask which particular piece of legislation Patch might find to be important. Is clothing really more important than the legislation that guides the country?
suspect there may have been some privacy issues
excuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me?
It was understood, thanks.
Clinton to support the resolution, tho, as I recall, at any rate.
Clinton did support… (brain burp!)
I think the Dem Senators are feeling somewhat guilty because they know they have let HoJo get away with sticking it to the party and they have done nothing about it. They should feel very guilty – it’s called aiding and abetting.
Unbelievable. And there’s something about denying climate change somewhere too.
Okay, washing BBQ off the monitor…
and feel the cold wind of our voting them out.
It’s called being played for suckers.
I couldn’t wait any longer. I put up my post on Open Salon celebrating McCain’s birthday tomorrow. Lots of pictures to set the mood.
Kerry was killah :D
all the blogispheric wistfulness about needing that guy in 04, hell, I want that guy in the Senate in 09 !
some hippy somewhere posted a stump speech he gave in Mass. a few weeks back (he is running for re election) and how the speech was about struggling americans of all stripes and not him – dear gaia, dare we to hope ?
we’ll see
“And we can see where all that experience has gotten us!”
Durbin to himself: I come into the blogger media area and they ask me a bunch of questions about Joe Lieberman. What’s up with that? I give them the standard Democratic schlock answer we give the rest of the media and they question me about that. That’s just rude. But I got back at that guy and managed to look Senatorial doing it. Oh wait, there was a camera. Shit.
Hahahaha…love it!!!
sorry, I couldn’t resist the set up on 59, forgive please
If the ‘clothing’ in question is worn by the Emperor, then its ‘cut’ or ‘reveal’ might well shape what is commonly referred to as ‘reality’,
but in Durbin’s case, ’twas simply something to rag on …
;~D
Four Wheels, No Brakes !
that’s a big BINGO daddy, yeah.
Dem Senators have lots of reasons to feel guilty but I can accept that they think Joe is a necessary evil until they pick up additional seats, rather than cede majority party status to the Republicans.
The real kick in the pants will be if they end up with 59 seats and need Joe’s vote to have a filibuster-proof majority.
Very good point. Do we dare hope he might decide to aspire to Kennedy’s role eventually?
Durbin is not testy if you use McCain’s interview with Time magazine as a comparison. I’m listening the the tape now. http://www.time.com/time/polit…..09,00.html
McSame has an interesting concept of policing:
This is in reference to American cities.
Sounds like “clear and hold” from St. Petraeus’ counterinsurgency manual.
Some great convention pics by Alan Chin at Bag News.
whew, i was all atwitter at that.
Durbin is a heck of a good guy. Taken by surprise, he didn’t want to make an offhand mistake in the middle of that gabbling maelstrom when the Democratic majority and his relations with Harry Reid hang in the balance. Write to Harry Reid for this information if you really want it.
I might think the “known criminals” are in jail
Anybody see this?
This makes it sound like Durbin being unprepared for a completely predictable and legitimate question is somehow our fault.
Secure The Area, Establish A Perimeter
Milspeak 101. his glaring omission is that this was a giant FAIL in eye-rack
The MSM has them all spoiled after years of softball questions
McC is just babbling. He has no idea what he is saying throwing out figures and dates and times. He’s truly ridiculous.
If Shortride is named VP, I seriously suggest we get mobilized here in CT to make Shortride give up his seat. That actually pissed some Dems off in 2000 when Lieberliar ran as VP and didn’t quit the senate, with a repuke governor poised to name a repuke replacement. Even though there’s irony there.
I Hear Lowell Weicker is available :D
Yep. What’s next, a privatized (Blackwater) police force?
Massively off topic — Rachel Maddow is speaking upstairs, I went in the side door and got like 20 feet away during the taping :)
Serious interview yet with that famous sparkle in her eyes. Outstanding orange shoes.
great job jim, tried to register with salon to give it a rating, but it didn’t cooperate……will try again later….
and i thought the louis caption on the front was fitting, that louis later whipped his butt.
Great choice, who knew that a 36 Hudson even looked like McCain?
being a ‘twit’?
ha
: P
Here’s another great quote from the convention:
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland got a big cheer Tuesday night with a new twist on an old anti-Bush line.
President Bush, he told Democratic Convention delegates, “was born on third base, and then he stole second,” a take-off on former Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower’s famous rejoinder that the first President Bush “was born on third base and thought he hit a triple.”
Anybody get a pic of the shoes?
‘Tis really a question of the citizenry knowing their ‘proper’ place.
Three paces behind, and keep yore mouf shut, them with gravitas and substance should not suffer the impertinence of mere tabble.
Don’t ya know?
;~D
And yes, Hugh, it is our fault. Nancy Pelosi warned us and we’ve taken no heed.
someone earlier say kay bailey butchison…
i sooooooo hope so, can you imagine the ‘corpse look-alikes’ on stage next to each other? no way…they’ll have to ‘get thee to a tanning booth’……
death warmed over can be their campaign slogan instead of bush3.
and she talks in platitudes, can’t break loose.
against biden?
ha, spirited ad-libber next to corpse ‘hit the replay machine’…
seriously.
wow. Dick Durbin is certainly, ahem, a DICK.
what a jackass (and I don’t mean that int he sense of the party’s icon).
what you have there is a textbook example of our ossified political class: out of touch, living in a bubble, and incapable of even the tiniest iota of intellectual honesty or consistency.
i don’t think any convention reports are off-topic….are they?
even from pups…….this is it, this is the week, and next week, any info is welcome in my book.
to what are you referencing?
i meant which thing!
sorry.
how’s the worm situation?
I agree. Durbin could have said, I don’t have a good answer for you and left it at that. Instead he gave a blow off response and got called on it.
Hilarious! So glad you’re there Pach.
This has become a pattern when dirty bloggers try to interview Those Who Know Better. Remember the Sen. Boxer/CTBob clip? That also involved a “liberal” senator and their completely incoherent support of Traitor Joe.
No matter how respectful and nice you are, they get so pissed when fairly challenged in ways the DeeCee cocktail weenie circuit never do. Why the hell couldn’t he simply say, “Trust me, there are many, but I’ve been so busy here and having a little trouble recalling specifics on the spot. That’s a fair question and I’ll try to get back to you. How’s that?” Or something to that effect.
The anger directed at you, and CTBob by Sen. Boxer, is just bizarre. Many of us have been these people’s biggest supporters over the years in donations and volunteering. Accountability’s a bitch, huh? Makes you wonder about their true motivations, and reach for the tin foil hat, doesn’t it?
THANKS perris, i was watching that yesterday, and was fascinated by the guy who kept wanting to keep therapeutic research in the amendment……missed the end of it cuz i switched to hear a speech….
heard it dismissed for further discussion, but didn’t hear how it ended….wow.
i watched a lot of it this week, was very interesting…..
they didn’t want anybody knowing that they didn’t have an inside rap with god after all, who didn’t hear/answer their prayers. forecast=no rain.
cracks me up that we’re supposed to ‘receive’ god’s blessings or trials, but they can ‘tell god what to do’……god will do what WE WANT if we pray hard enough….man, oh, man, i’ll leave it at that…..
wow, just watched the video….
i think he’s pissed because they don’t know what to do about him.
like taking the heat for someone who’s screwin’ your wife cuz he knows what’s in your basement, seems to me.
Any chance for another link . . . this one doesn’t work for me. I truly want to forward this to several of the (general) healthcare blogs, as well as a couple of T1 diabetes sites. T1 diabetics have longed for change in this venue, and have felt any progress toward a cure has been thwarted. As they eagerly discuss how a proliferation of endorsed stem-cell research may move them forward, they will be outraged to see just a blatant, in-your-face platform.
Great journalism!
Durbin’s JOB is to count votes and ensure passage of Democratic legislation in the US Senate. If he can’t give you any examples of how Joe Lieberman has helped them pass legislation, there are none.
Again, great journalism, Pach! Keep it up, team.
Pach,
I think they (Dem leadership) are afraid of alienating Lieberman. Which may explain the agitated response.
Why are the Dem leaders afraid of alienating him when Lieberman has done enough to alienate Dem voters? Why the caution?
