Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid discusses reasons for keeping Joe Lieberman in the Senate Democratic caucus.
In this context, Reid volunteers that he recently went to Leiberman and said, "Joe, I need money from you." He describes Lieberman responding, "Will $250 thousand be enough?" Lieberman subsequently gave $250 thousand to the DSCC. Senator Chris Dodd also cited Lieberman’s donation to the DSCC yesterday.
Reid also describes the importance of having had Lieberman’s vote on the budget during the last session, and the need for his vote on legislation during the remainder of the current session.
Regarding Lieberman’s inclusion in the caucus in the next session, Reid states, "Nothing is set in stone." Regarding Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin’s angry characterization of a question about good votes by Lieberman as "illegitimate" yesterday, Senator Reid describes the question as clearly fair.
The excuse of Lieberman’s votes for the remainder of the session makes no sense to me. Nothing of consequence on energy policy or anything else will overcome a presidential veto. Moreover, the Democrats are invulnerable now to any loss of control of the Senate, no matter what they do to Joe Lieberman.
So, it just looks like Joe Lieberman is paying protection money to the DSCC to obtain license to call Obama a traitor, campaign for and travel with John McCain, speak at the Republican National Convention and campaign for a slot on the GOP presidential ticket. Reid, to his credit, candidly all but says so.
What clearer indication of Democratic party corruption, however legal, can there be?
Watch it!

250 Million? Probably not. You’ve got to have an extra zero or two in there somewhere.
wow
Pretty clear that Reid doesn’t want to deal with this issue now…That’s OK with me- dealing with it in January after we know if we’ve picked up additional seats and how the voting strength sorts out is OK with me.
$250K maybe?
Yeah, it has to be $250 thousand. For $250 million, they’d nominate HoJo instead of Barack.
He says “quarter of a million”…$250,000…not “million”. Just sayin’….I was wondering where the heck he could get $250 million.
The New Media at work. Please keep this stuff up.
Appreciate Reid’s honesty at least. Hey, Traitor Joe pays! It’s nice to know that’s what it is, and now we can all do everything we can to grow Blue America/FDL to become MUCH more influential that it already is. Our task is clear.
Ditching his wife and marrying two and a half beer baronesses.
Y’all think Teh Party of Wun concerns itself with fewer than 9 digits? C’mon. Thousands are soooooooo yesterday. Remember how odd Dr. Evil sounded when he wanted to hold the world hostage for One. Hundred. Thousand. Dollars?
Reid says “quarter of a million” and “250 thousand”, not $250 million.
Yeah – raise $250,001
Gee, having money is even better than having principles. You see that is what separates Democrats from Republicans. Democrats have principles to sell out.
Maybe he was trying to do bad snark?
Apparently principles are like virginity, you can lose them over and over again. No, wait a minute…
Where in the hell did Liebercheese get a quarter of a billion dollars?
On another note, someone around here had a funny comment about wingnut bloggers getting pantsed in junior high and still not able to deal with normal people because of it.
Can someone point me to it, please? I used the advance search function with no success. Thanks, and carry on.
Time to jangle the house keys at McBush and Romney…talk about “elite”…Romney owns 55 pieces of real estate:

Looks like Joe Lieberman is more important to the d party that all of the ‘folks’ who might vote for Obama.
Interesting calculation.
BTW: Never knew Joe had that kind of money, what say 250 MILLION?
There are principles and then there is PRINCIPLE.
Big smackers, all around.
Whither the d Par-ray?
Par-Tay!
Good Work Pach. Reid cites passing the budget with Lieberman’s help as a great accomplishment. Reid says the Republicans could not pass a budget with ten extra guys, but the Democrats got it done with their narrow majority. Whoopee!
The budget was a fiasco. It’s approval was denied by Bush, until Bush got all the war profiteering billions he wanted with no oversight or accountability.
This Harry Reid cites as a major accomplishment. Maybe it would have been better not to get a budget done. If the Republicans could not get one done, maybe it wasn’t needed. Harry gave Bush all that money and he’s proud of it.
Its laughable.
That’s a very bad sign coming from Reid. When a politician begins to act like it’s all about the “Benjamins” then I would reply that maybe Reid isn’t the right guy for his Senate position. As for HoJo’s votes he plays both sides against the other….and I would toss him out of the caucus for being a Republican shill.
I get it now (I’m a bit slow): our tent’s so big that it includes the other party as well.
So…all of Lieberman’s hard work on his Katrina committee may come into question soon…the pumps in NOLA don’t work right…and have not been tested properly at all.
Actually, in Reid’s eyes (and probably Durbin’s) the vote that Short Ride gave that was and is the most important one he ever has cast is the one that put them in as Majority Leader and Whip.
The Tax Whisperer and McInsane have so much in common!
McInsane was a POW, and Romnutz’s dog was trapped in a cage and tortured as well.

See, they’re both just like all of us.
Apparently in politics the loss of virginity lasts about as long as a voter’s memory.
Actually, that was “One MILLLLLION dollars” in the first film. Which of course could be scrounged up just from the platinum cards of the members of Dick Cheney’s cabinet, and thus isn’t intimidating at all, thus the laughter.
The second film sees Dr. Evil, back in 1967, making the opposite mistake: Asking for way too much money (”One hundred BILLLLLION dollars!”), which causes the world’s leaders to laugh hysterically; he might as well have been asking for payment in Monopoly money.
What a surprise, NOT. The so called dem leadership is a bigger a joke than the republics.
If Reid announced a press conference today to announce that Lieberman will be relieved of his committee assignments in January (if the dems hold the senate), then the dems should remove Reid on the spot. This is not the time for the dems to upstage their own convention and campaign with such a message. It would be suicide- but then the dems have done such before.
this from the sam guy who wouldn’t let the senate investigate Homeland Security’s murder of NOLA.
From Roger Ailes (the good one, not the bad one) last week:
Indeed they have.
250 thousand?
Sounds more like it.
Makes the d’s look even more craven.
250 Million ain’t peanuts, but 250 THOUSAND?
Talk about a ‘cheap’ date.
Why that ain’t even real Principle, in the La-la land of poly-tics.
Hard up are ya Harry?
Jeez you guys sell yourselves cheap. Dirt cheap. And that 250 thou buys what?
Precisely?
Guess we’ll nevah know.
Maybe it’s ‘cuz the money was from Joe, and thereby ‘means’ more?
Awww, ain’t that so sweet?
hush money from HoJo’s slush fund.
That’s good. Although pop culture references from the ’70s are too recent for John McCain, somebody will have to explain to him who Gary Glitter is.
coincidentally, that sum equals a big chunk of the petty cash that was unaccounted for during his 2006 “they kicked me to the curb but I’m baaaaack” general election campaign.
I thought they explained that they gave all that money to street
walkersworkers and forgot to ask for receipts?Yaaaak! I hate it when i mi-un-remembur.
It makes me feel like a Republican.
Just heard Norah O’Donnell tell that Cindy McCain’s half-sister has said she is going to vote for Obama.
I think Norah’s a dem- just a guess.
Sigh. That should have been “mis-un-remembur”.
Yikes. More from the Party of “family values.”
http://www.usmagazine.com/news…..-for-obama
Her son (would that be Cindy’s half-nephew?) says he’d never vote for McInsane no matter what Party he’s in, and is scared of the idea of Cindy being in the White House. Ouch.
I don’t think Harry Reid is telling the truth. CNN reports two Lieberman donations of $115,000 to the DSCC; one in 2007, one in 2008. So when did the quarter-of-a-million dollars conversation, and contribution, actually happen, Harry Reid?
I work for a not-for-profit. I just gave my boss a donation, then asked her if she would mind terribly if I wrote a grant application for one of our competitors.
She was not amused.
Joe did not give $250k of HIS money to the DSCC.
Jow gave $250k of some Pac’s money to the DSCC.

The McCain camp, abetted by the usual commercial network chowder-heads, is ranting about the tonight’s stage setting as the “Temple of Obama”. There’s a stone cold killer response to that nonsense. The Greek revival look is in many older Federal and State capitol buildings, as well as the almost brand new symphony hall in Nashville, TN (25% McCain advantage in TN). There’s a good reason for this, besides the innate beauty of the architecture. We owe Western democracy to the Greek classical times, 500-300 BCE. So what better way to show our gratitude to these ancients than to revive their architecture? From Wikipedia the word democracy
The strength of the people is the perfect description of Obama’s message, and coincidentally the choice for the name Democratic party.
On the other hand “Republic” denotes a form of government, as distinct from a monarchy or a dictatorship, in which people have at least some impact. McCain is in favor of the country America, which doesn’t automatically translate into great concern for its people and their liberties. Obama is in favor of the people who make up the country, which will always translate into concern for the country which secures their “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness”.
Someone named… Hamsher(?) is upstairs!
Live From the Big Tent
Nice that Cindy’s family gets along so well- somethin about throwin 100 million dollars in a swimming pool heated to boiling and filled with shit? (with apologies to Terry Southern)
LOL
But oh wait he’s an INDEPENDENT- running with the GOP, caucusing with the Dems, giving money to the Dems to stay on committees.
oh ok. I get it.
Remember that McBush needs to burn through every penny in his current campaign chest before accepting the gooper nomination. Should be a flood of ads in Ohio.
Deer, meet HEADLIGHTS!
Holy crap is that double standard ever tough to defend against.
GREAT JOB!
The crooks admit to taking bribes on camera!
I mentioned this already, that Joe Lieberliar claims to be an observant, orthodox Jew. Joe does not work on Saturdays, The Sabbath. But he does work on the Sabbath. I guess that would make him a religious phony. At least JoeMo is generous with money he gets from the corporate lobbyists. His wife is a corporate lobbyist. I wonder if she works on Saturdays? Did Harry Reid get the $250 thousand on a Saturday?
A FOX talking head actually schools the rest of the mainstream media on the art of the follow-up question…leaving Rove squirming in his seat – caught in a total lie about the call to Lieberman.

From TPM
Invesco Insanity
Ben Craw and I just arrived at Invesco Field in Denver, site of tonight’s acceptance speech by Barack Obama. We were lucky enough to have grabbed the last couple of seats available in the press box.
An hour before the day’s official convention schedule kicks off — and six hours before Obama is scheduled to speak — a scattering of people are already in their seats above the field. Delegates are filing in. They are seated on the field itself. It’s a bright, sunny, not-too-warm day here, but that’s a long time to be baking in the sun.
I hate to even comment on the set prepared for Obama for his speech. The ridiculous right wing meme that the set is a Greek temple to Obama is too mindless to deserve comment. The set looks like nothing so much as the East Colonnade of the White House.
The demand for press access to this event is so great that we’re apprehensive about losing our seats here in the press box. We have seats available in the stadium itself as well as some access to the field itself.
We’ll be bringing you reports as we are able, including video as the day unfolds.

Whether it’s paying off Reid, or dishing out his “petty cash” on the streets of Bridgeport back in 06, Lieberman knows that in the end, money talks.
G*d/dess, watching Harry Reid on that clip is like looking at the Wizard of Oz after the curtain is pulled. He appears so stoopid. He scrambles for justification. First the money (stoopid). Reid seems to think that he appears clever rather than corrupt, and when that doesn’t hold, Reid pulls a serious face and starts talking about “needing votes.” So what is it Senator Reid? Pay to play Holy Joe, or “we need the votes that we aren’t going to get from the wingnut”?
I heard it was N** H***** and H******* as well. If Lamont had dished “petty cash” out for the same purposes, would he have gotten away with it? Blumenthal says it’s not his territory to investiagte. we don’t have a rats chance in hell of getting our corrupt DOJ to investigate. But I think this story should really hit Holy Joe smack back in the face where it belongs, especially now. There have to be a lot of witnesses. What was the going rate supposed to be? $200? Hmmm.
