GRITtv interviews Rep. Barbara Lee the author of Renegade for Peace and Justice. A voice in the wilderness, Lee was the only member of congress who voted against the authorization of the use of force following the attacks of 9/11, essentially questioning the notion that a war on terror was a sensible way to respond. Attending her first convention in 1972 as a Shirley Chisholm delegate, she says that, "I’ve never made peace with my party." Perhaps that is why she’s been able to fight from within it.
Lee continues to be a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq and has even called for the creation of a Department of Peace. Imagine that! Lee is also the first Vice Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Here on GRITtv she talks about the convention, Barack Obama’s historic candidacy, and what the Democratic Party must do to reign in defense spending and change the course of US foreign policy.
