Law-enforcement officials are dismissing the apparent plot by white-supremacist tweakers to shoot Barack Obama in Denver because it’s clear that they weren’t competent in the least:
And of course, that means the wingnutosphere is even more eager to dismiss it, as Nitpicker reports. This includes some faux-macho posturing about guns that actually only demonstrate the wingnuts’ base ignorance about them.
Well, we’ve already observed that we were fortunate that they weren’t very competent. But where there’s smoke … well, let’s just say we shouldn’t be quite so eager to just toss this off.
Especially considering that the chief reason for dismissing any concern is that they were tweakers. This rationale was touted by the cops and seized upon by the wingnuts. But even Rachel Maddow applied this logic:
“Know how you can tell a crime isn’t going to be successful?” (Rachel) Maddow asked her new friends. “Crystal meth.”
There’s some legitimate basis to this reasoning, but it’s not wholly accurate, either — because tweakers, while innately unstable and scattered, still are capable of wreaking extraordinary harm. Example No. 1: Tim McVeigh.
The Oklahoma City bomber and his Arizona buddy Michael Fortier were prodigious tweakers. At one point, McVeigh even exchanged some stolen guns for methamphetamine. As this 2001 piece about the relationship of meth to criminal behavior notes:
In fact, McVeigh’s lawyer made an argument during the trial that his client was a practicing, paranoid, delusional "tweaker," or meth addict, whose judgment had been irreparably impaired by his drug use.
The bottom-line issue is not whether these men were actually capable of killing Obama — considering the levels of security in Denver this week, any plot would have had only an infinitesimal likelihood of succeeding in the first place, and the plotters’ apparently addled state would have reduced that to nearly nothing. Yet it seems not to have crossed anyone’s minds that even if Obama was never at risk, any number of innocent bystanders stood in harm’s way.
No, the issue remains that there is an unusual level of visceral hatred towards Obama already extant because of his race. And that hatred is being whipped up to feverish levels by the dog-whistle race-baiting that is endemic to the right-wing attacks on Obama, as well as the general levels of violent rhetoric they have been deploying for the past decade and longer and rising in recent months.
These crazies don’t act in a vacuum. And the problem is one not just for their immediate targets, but for all of us.

Thanks, David. I can only imagine what the wingers would be saying if the tweaked guys with guns had been black and in Minnesota.
‘Afternoon, David;
The threat (how can it be anything else? ‘incompetence’ never stopped Bu$h CO) was dismissed before there appeared sufficient time to actually KNOW.
Strange that.
Passing strange …
I have never heard that Tim McVeigh was a tweaker only that he was upset that Clinton burned down WACO. I read, watch the news am reasonably aware why can’t the MSM keep me informed?
Maybe because the storyline the MSM was pushing at the time would have suffered if the Oklahoma City bombing was just a bunch of Meth Heads. Instead of people very angry about what Clinton did at Waco.
The last thing the GOP wants is for Law enforcement to go after skinheads in red states.
Yeah, that thought occurred to me too.
probably not the right thread for this bit of d r i f t g l a s s levity.
I do recall seeing some info on McVeigh as a meth head but it was not prominent by any means.
What if they were Black with Turbans?
And had F*ck Bush T-Shirts on?
Where did they get the bullet proof vests, the guns, etc.? Until these things are tracked down and all possible leads to a plot are exhausted, we cannot assume they were acting alone. Odds are they were, but it has to be checked out.
When I saw that the state attorney general had dismissed the seriousness of the allegation so casually, there is no wonder the depth of damage this cabal has done to the justice system; it exists no longer when called upon to protect a political candidate of the opposition party.
By letting the Tweakers run free is law enforcement hurting or helping them?
Short term a lot of lives were ruined and will never recover both from crack in the 80’s and some long sentence.
But long term was less damage done than by ignoring the problem?
Either dittoheads or hannitized. So hard to tell which.
For that matter, what if they had been 60-something librarians carrying “Bush = McCain” signs?
What if they were wearing turbans…
Are sales of bullet proof vests legal for non law enforcement?
It’s fun to be funny, sometimes.
You’re very clever with words.
I like words.
I like heart too.
Teacher! He’s copying me. :)
Who bankrolled these guys Meth, guns, bullet proof vests cost money. Either they have been robbing banks or cooking lots of meth to afford this stuff as well as their drug habit.
They will get the FBI special agent that got the goods on Ivins on it right away
I think that was the USA
Does this mean they won’t be able to fulfill their obligations as delegates at the GOP National Convention next week?
Yes, I think you are correct, my bad ;-(
meth is relatively cheap and its key ingredients, ephedrine or pseudoephedrins can only be produced by highly sophisticated manufacturing techniques that are only possible by nine companies worldwide. Hence, meth can be easily controlled off the marketplace if there was a global will and desire to do so.
http://blog.legendarylife.com/…..h-epidemic
My bold First the Oklahoma City bombing now this we can control meth or stop it entirely just stop producing the key ingredient even if it hurts a drug companies bottom line.
A big stand against Meth a complete stopping of production of the key ingredient combined with government help to find a non addicting alternative for legal use would win us law enforcement votes in all the red states.
We could run the table then on election day.
This story smells way too convenient for the security zealots.
Pulled over by pure luck, and then fully confess to a plot this enormous? I’m just not buyin’ it.
See what happens when you lose all your credibility, crying wolf a thousand times too many? How are we supposed to know what the hell to believe?
Let’s ask Karl Rove – “The Terrorist”:
”That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. ”We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”
So Karl, when will you let it “leak” that the way these guys were REALLY caught is through use of warrantless wiretapping, thereby cementing once and for all the image of “Saving Obama” through the revocation of our remaining civil rights?
Karl…come on, fess up. You know you want to take credit for this one.
You read better newspapers than I:)
The gop is only interested if they have a darker skin color.
Well, like I say; it was mentioned but usually buried deep in an article so you really had to persevere to actually find the info.
Kucinich’s convention speech edited (what a shame).
The Hill reports that the Obama campaign has, at times, been “tightening the reins on campaign speeches and stressing that speakers emphasize a rags-to-riches theme.” Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) had one line redacted from his speech, which suggested some conservatives need to serve time in prison. The original line read:
David,
No Credible Threat Found
is a perfect title for the future bestseller chronicling the young Senator’s murder
sorry firedogs, had to let that one out, my paranoia increases daily
They are meth heads they talk allot sometimes any stool pigeon hearing them talk crazy in a bar will think this is my get out of jail free card if I report them.
Odds of this resulting from a “random traffic stop?”
There are a lot of other threats that they “deal” with

Even if you are high shooting guns Guns in a crowded area could kill lots of people. Even if the tweakers had no chance of getting near Obama.

I’ve never seen that quote officially attributed to Rove.
I mean, I always suspected that it was his, and it sure *sounds* like him, but I thought that that quote was officially attributed only to a “senior official”.
That dentist did a passin’ fair job of sharpening yer teeth; give him/her my compliments next visit. *g*

Owing to “their great size and other worldly strengh”, ‘they’ left no clues at all …
Quote from Rep. John Haller (Pa) unveiling ‘Martial (Martian?) Law Plans’ … before the U.S. House of Representatives
Followed closely by Who Could Have Imagined? :-(
That is 100% correct – yet I attribute it to Rove every time I use it. Let Suskind or Rove refute it. That is ALL Karl Rove. He can’t help himself.
that wasn’t Rove, that was some Cheney minion . . .idiotic enough to say it to Froomkin of all people
was prolly the little guy found to have been in Georgia 10 days before the shit started
what’s the t-shirt McVeigh has on?
“As people do better, they start voting like Republicans – unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing.”
Karl Rove.
I doubt he is wearing a t-shirt
Addington?
The quote came from this article by Suskind, not Froomkin:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10…..ssuserland
can one of the firedogs more familiar with guns explain this to me ?
what the hell ?
Odds are higher that a Police informant at a bar or one of the Tweakers meth customers overheard something and then talked to the police who are trying to claim all the credit and keep their source alive. Stuff like this is gold I’m sure it buys you a few get out of jail free cards for using.
Last I heard the Feds were listening to Arabs, Ecoterrorists, and Left Wing Democrats what are the odds that the Feds were even listening to much less thought that a bunch of angry tweaking white guys were a threat?
Even with computer programs that look for code words the Feds would be hauling in half my old home town for questioning about violent stuff said about Obama on the phone.
I think it was a tip from an informant but I will admit nobody knows now.
David can outcheney Cheney when it comes to placing himself as far away from the actual crime as possible.
I didn’t mean to imply that the Feds actually did use wiretaps to catch these guys. I was inferring that they may insinuate as much down the road to further their agenda.
Rove is a magical thinker arrrgh the Reality based community is laughing in hindsight having been proven right.
from one of David’s links:
Law enforcement officials were also investigating whether the men were linked to vandalism shootings that targeted at least two federal buildings in Denver over the past two weeks. Windows were shot at the U.S. Custom House and the U.S. Military Entrance Processing Station on the same street in Denver’s downtown Federal District.
Additionally, a bullet was recovered from a Hertz rental car that was hit on Aug. 15, and authorities are now looking to see if it could have matched the guns seized from the men.
Nah, no way these guys were a threat, or would ever have fired those weapons.
Just tweaked-to-the-gills hunters, no doubt. With walkie-talkies to, umm, alert each other where the deer were…
my bad.
Good point we can’t let them use this to justify wire taps.
Harken back to June of 2006….. Anyone think those seven black guys arrested in the warehouse in Liberty City actually had the wherewithal to blow up the Sears Tower? Didn’t think so. Didn’t stop the feebers from making a federal case out of it, though, did it? Whatever happened to equal treatment for all? Crushed ‘neath Homeland Security’s jackboot, that’s what.
Any word yet if the Tweakers listened to Rush Limbaugh and Michelle Malkin during the entire car ride to the convention? Did they Post at O’Reily’s blog assuming he has one?
I had heard that there was also a scope and that one of the rifles was a sniper type rifle. Who knows what is accurate at this point. Different rifles have much different capabilities as well as the ammunition. The range and the trajectory can vary significantly.
Suppression of the press, for doing some of that old-fashioned shoe leather reporting. *sigh* I really hope we can get more/most of our party away from Big Money sometime soon.
D
God bless Kucinich — at least he tried.

Dang I would have liked to link them directly to the Mainstream Right Wing Media. Still what radio stations were the vehicle they were in presets set to?
I wonder if the AG the Cops Secret Service and DoJ are telling the Boys to lawyer up and shut up, ’cause they want this to go away. Heavens that a full investigation into their background, friends and alliances could be at all useful!
What’s all the uproar about? Just think if Hillary had won over obama, what she would have to have endured. And it wouldn’t have been from just the right wing crazies.
Thanks for that link.
40 grams of meth, these boys were wound tight. That’s about 1 1/2 ounces, that much can pretty much turn you into superman. You know aiming that rifle, popping off a round, making a new reality while totally paranoid, cool.
Hi Waccamaw, if you are still in the vicinity. I had ducked out for awhile and just saw your message.
Troy Eid is a Bush tool. His appointment as a State AG was always controversial…a recommendation forced upon the Governor (who apparently thought he was too ideological). But Eid was a Republican party “rainmaker”. He once withdrew his nomination when the issue of conflicts of interest might arise with his wife, who Bush also appointed to the Federal Courts. But like Nosferatu, he returned from the grave.
I just wonder if the fact that Squeaky Fromm, or John Hinkley, Jr. used drugs and were “delusional” prior to their assassination attempts would handcuff Eid from acting if this were a REPUBLICAN candidate.
I suspect Eid has a dual standard…the outdated “Twinky defense” is okay if the act or attempt involves an attack on a Democratic candidate? The law apparently only is applied to members of the “correct” party.
I recall that psychologists defended Dan White arguing that he was delusional and drug-impaired, as well. He was also filled with hate for Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, and knew quite well that he was on a mission to kill them. The decision of “manslaughter” was widely assailed but efforts to change the law only occurred after a Republican President was nearly killed by a deranged, obsessive individual.
In fact, after the Hinkley assassination attempt on Reagan there were reforms of the Federal laws on the “insanity defense” which prevented a mere reference to a person being mentally ill being sufficient to serve as a defense. This was revised to allow only those cases where an individuals was incapacitated from understanding the consequences of ones actions. (i.e. that the act was not intended to “kill” another individual).
It’s clear in this case that at least one of the individuals, despite their use of drugs, were well aware of an act represented being intended to kill Obama. The intent, motive and consequences were quite clear.
Would Eid have released a “Squeaky Fromm” if she had made such statements about McCain, and was toting about firearms? “Sorry! Have to wait until she puts the plan into effect- otherwise she’s simply a delusional, drug-using, religious cult member!”
The rifles also were supplied with scopes. That’s not exactly the sort of weaponry that “tweakers” might carry in a drug-deal. I doubt that they acquired those in some “drug-addled” state and that these guys were just talking random stuff. That suggests planning.
In addition Eid’s comments ring hollow, especially after he DID press Federal charges against an incarcerated Colorado prisoner who sent John McCain a letter that contained a powder that turned out to be harmless. Baby powder! Oh, all such mail out of the prison is screened…there is no way the guy would obtain anthrax or other harmful powder, and no way that it would have reached McCain.
Muslim-named Convict Charged With Threat Upon McCain
Just how is that a “threat” made by a prisoner behind bars with baby-powder “realistic”, while the one made by a group of sniper-scope armed white-supremicists who are roaming the streets of Denver searching for Obama (they selected a hotel thinking that Obama might stay there)…a fantasy.
Eid is a right-wing functionary. A member of Traurig’s ” Abramoff team”, appointed by Karl Rove.
He’s the last person that should be protecting Obama…sort of like asking Musharaff to protect Bhutto.
Oh fucking shit! This is bad, very, very bad.
