es! sly!
Stand!
Wow. Not as happy as I should be, given the Convention…I was all so goin’ with it, digging what Biden was saying…and then he says, “We’re going to hold Russia accountable.”…and I suddenly felt like a deflated balloon. Would someone tell me why we, both parties, have decided that re-starting the Cold War is a good idea?
OMG! Me too! He went off like a rabid Lieberman.
Ah, so I should have paid attention to that nagging voice in my mind saying “Russia? Eh? WTF?”.
Politics. Can’t live with it…can’t shoot myself…
FunnyD
Insert BushCo for Russia and he would have had an audience on their feet.
I am going to go completely off if they let those motherfuckers walk away.
Hey there FunnyD.
Sounded to me like Biden promised to go to war with everyone, exept Iran.. we can just talk with Iran.
And several folks didn’t just say “Where’s Osama?” They skipped that altogether and said we’re going to hunt him down. (in so many words)
In my mind, Eastern Europe is in a dangerous place. Baker promises Gorbachev that we won’t expand NATO to Russia’s borders…and as soon as his government falls, we start doing just that. Now we’re trying to get Ukraine and Georgia, right on Russia’s doorstep, into NATO, and installing missile interceptors and air-defense assets in Poland and the Czech Republic-to which Russia has promised “100% chance of retaliation.”. We’re still in Turkey, Iraq, the ’stans, Japan of course..looking at a map, the obvious strategy is the encirclement of Russia-and they’re pissed, and tired of being disrespected. If I were in Georgia, Ukraine, or Crimea….I’d be sleeping lightly.
Hey people, hello?
I’m with you. They don’t get to just walk away…no way.
Senator Biden, let us remove the mote from our own eye…How about, “We’re going to hold the people that ordered lies to be told, that made up the lies, and who told the lies, that led the US into an unjust war accountable!”?
You’re right. Would have brought down the house.
Poor McCain, gets himself a way hip celebrity endorsement, only to find out it’s actually an Obama hand me down.
Hi, Christine!
Biden was my senator.
Hi Chris, hi everyone.;)
Hey, ES
I kind of caught that. And the whole “eeeeeek, Iran’s trying to get da bomb!!!”–knocking W and beating that war drum in the same breath…yuk.
OTOH, after all the “omg, Biden’s gonna be such a snore, how’s he gonna follow Big Dog” buildup, I thought his speech was darn effective. I think us FDL “bubble” boyz n grrrlz are extra, extra attuned to those little “tells.”
FunnyD
Hi Chris.
Then you had it good for a time.
Cats with wings.
The slow wheels of justice exonerate accused witch, 225 years after execution.
I’m sick of hearing this…The NIE, the consensus product of fifteen US intelligence agencies, says that Iran suspended their weapons program five years ago. So, Senator Biden, if you’re going to try and sell us that bullshit…you’re going to have to at least rise to the level of a humble bloger, and provide links or something to back up the accusation.
OK Pups the Digg IS open sorry for being so late with it. So make sure you Digg it and make up for lost time (:>))
“blogger”…
Preview is my friend.
Hiya Ron,
Just love this…
From a two year old article on the state of our economy and the direction that it has taken under Republican leadership!
The Great Wealth Transfer
Some of the best of the Shrill one. Thanks for the reminder.
Cat that wished it had wings.
I’m with you. I was also bummed that my radio commentators were dissing Kerry’s speech which I loved and I kept trying to complain by phone to the station. I LOVED his speech.
When Biden brought up Georgia i thought OY VEY. They are talking beyond us to the other side… walking on egg shells… must be foggy and fuzzy as if that is going to woo the McCainiacs and Repubs….. ugh. It is not a simple situation, but that shoot from the hip, follow McCain’s macho lead… how sad is this…. we gotta appeal to the patriarchal paradigm folk and walk across the faces of the true liberals, the partnership paradigm people. Flash of FISA. Flash of cowardly Dems in Congress.
Biden didn’t have to fudge it like that. Unspecific but echoing McCain.
I also thought that when Clinton said Biden was hitting it out of the park… it made his endorsement of Obama anti-climactic… Clinton that sly dog… but Obama got to say Hillary rocked the hall after Bill Clinton’s speech… so the quiet ego chess game goes on.
Loved the Schweitzer speech, too. But Kerry’s was best.
Greenwald hits the same old neo nuts on the issue of Russia.. Biden sounded just like them, imo.
Warnings to Russia from Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham
SNIP -much more worth a read.
Me, too.
And in which life would you ever have thought you would say that about a Kerry speech?
Ah. Chinese cats with wings. Wonder if they’re related to Archaeoraptors…
FunnyD
Poor ol’ tomcat with all the lady cats wantin’ to jump his bones…
Exactly. Why its magic when these guys lose the presidency. Look at Gore. Look at Kerry. Wow, the sadder but wiser men come down to earth and tell it honestly and passionately. Go figure.
Dude, no disrespect to you but I almost fell off the bed at this one,
“Warnings to Russia from Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham”
Don’t wear stripes with polka dots fella’s.
Couple of Snunches.
When Kerry went into McCain’s various position changes, made that comment about McCain debating himself, or something like that, and then capped it with: “…talk about voting for it before he voted against it!”
That took guts.
Ow, poor cat.
Listening to Kerry’s speech right now. Wow, i wish he could have unleashed this in 2004.
I’m trying ot find links to Bill’s speech and the Biden one too. Finished my DJ shift about 45 minutes ago and now planning catchup!
Dude, if I were Russia, I’d be putting anti-aircraft assets in Iran, and smuggling them into Iraq, just like we did to them in Afghanistan. Graham and Lieberman? You want to see the Russian steamroller roll over Georgia? Start sending them operational quantities of anti-air and anti-armor weapons.
You might as well just give them directly to Russia, ’cause that’s who will wind up with ‘em.
Hey I call John, Joe & Lindsey .. Larry, Moe and Curly. I don’t know what that makes Biden.. but I am not about to ignore it.
Pure electioneering . . . the cold war redoux is a neocon gambit, and it’s failed MIGHTILY, so far, WRT to Georgia.
Don’t be fooled again . . . just elect the dem . . then we can hold feet to fire.
Life is simple, don’t fuck it up!!! *G*
This was in the news box earlier.

Biden
Bubba
I was going to add.. Coast Guard cutter??? And humanitarian aid my DFH tye died arse.
Having trouble with computer tonight on this thread.
Yeah, Kerry was great. I got the feeling he was punching out at McCain, Bush, Rove…. he was getting some of his own back saying all that and he was clear and relentless … and it did illulminate how the Dems are pulling their punches. WHY??? Kerry wasn’t pulling any punches. He should write all their speeches.
Finally somebody, specifically Joe Biden, used the word “torture,” but very gingerly, at the DNC. That’s a start, but now I want to hear “war crimes” — DFHs are never satisfied.
Hunting down OBLiden is not a bad thing.
The rest is negotiable, and Obama WILL netogiate . . . and be successful.
You folks need to calm down about all this percieved PRO WAR rhetoric you think you see behind the Oz Curtain.
Let the guy get elected, with his VP, and THEN, they get 100 days . . . and then, we hold feet to fire.
ENOUGH WITH THE CRAP THERE’S AN ELECTION TO WIN!!!
Norske?? Please? Flame some, will ya?
I got a fest to go to at 04:30 for a few daze so I can get insane before I get loco to stay sane . . .
http://www.strawberrymusic.com
Y’all take care of each other . . . and leave Obama/Biden alone . . . they’ll deliver a win if ya don’t fuck it up.
Anything less than a win, and we ALL fucked.
Now herd up, and fall in line ya danged progressives!!! *G*
IIRC, there were multiple Curly’s.
Biden gets no pass from me, I am pretty much done with every fucking bit of this farce. The whole process flat out ignores you and me.
When they flaunt the buy offs and call the cops to haul off anyone trying to point them out?
Insert well known Busted phrase here.
Every bit of this is crooked and I don’t give a shit who wants to argue that fact.
Uh…did you miss Kerry’s barn burner? He hit the torture point pretty hard, iirc!
FunnyD
Don’t be fooled again
Just elect the Dem.
I like that!
if I may be so bold to dissent:
After watching the major speech videos: Michelle Obama, Gov of Montana, The Senator from Iowa? and his republican friend who gave a strong speech against the neocon policies of Bush/McCain, Hillary, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden.
I see Dean’s hand at the strategy helm with an aganda and a political map to the November election success. Every speech was delivered with stunning pace and emotionalizing not missing a beat. Beautifully done and throughout the thread, getting people back to work with equal pay, medical care for all, renewable energy that will create millions of good jobs, bringing the American dream back to everyone, respect abroad and strong economy. Diplomacy was also acentuated clearly about preemptive strikes.
I was favorably impressed by the convention. I noted that Biden made it clear McCain is a friend who is wrong on policy: he then went down a long list of where McCain is wrong and Obama is/was right.
It is to early to hit the panic button. The Dems are out in front this time on famiily value, patriotism, supporting the troops all the weak points that they were on the defensive they have taken the offense on. Good strategy!!!!
Yeah, the guy was listing the supplies. Energy bars, diapers, … I don’t know but the list sounded a bit pathetic and cover up.
I am so tired of letting the sheeple lead. Clinton had his moments, but that peripheral vision was always on the polls. Don’t bring up homelessness… we will panic the other side. Honor the liberal values you can tiptoe through with, forget the others.
Feet to fire later? Some columnist on the radio said the Dems promise to pick up its soul at the pawn shop AFTER the election.
Kerry went after torture. I thought of you.
hey larue – i really enjoying reading your food post over at the beach house – got any more coming?
Wholehearted agreement there.. At least we are slipping our Edwards and Graysons in. If it weren’t for that I might not be Standing.
Yep. That kind of fire in 2004 and who knows where we’d be…
But he has nothing to lose now.
So endeth the lesson for Democrats.
I missed Kerry’s talk, but what people told me was exactly what you’re saying. Meanwhile, I was rather disappointed with Biden’s talk. IMHO, he should have done better.
Bill clinton was pretty good, but even he was capable of better.
Watch next week and see what a real attack looks like.
And homeless veterans, iirc. I was glad to hear that in so many words in prime time.
FunnyD
We are ‘told’ that the Obama staff manhandled Biden’s speech pretty heavily, and that may account for the stilted delivery.
Too late. We bought that shit in 2006. Sorry.
Thanks. I was expecting much better from Biden, and that would explain it.
Yeah, I liked that. Duckworth spoke on that! She was good and socking it to McCain and company about Vets rights. She would run for Obama’s senate seat I think.
I’m being purposely vague about it, because I believe I heard it being discussed between Tweety and KO. Who knows where that tidbit came from…
I missed Kerry, but Biden at least uttered the word. I’ll have to watch the Youtube of Kerry — where was the fire when we needed it?
ok, pups, time for me to head off. g’nite all
Hey I liked that pep talk keep it up!! We need to be told to do things sometimes if just to remind us of the bigger picture. We cannot tolerate a
McCain administration!
So as Laure says WE have an Election to WIN So do your part to help our team win!
Someone was spreading the rumor that, if Obama gets elected, the governor will appoint her to his seat.
But But the Dems are taking the high road and maybe many will see the dirty tactics the Rethugs take and punish them for their behavior… Or at least I hope they do!!
Whoa nelly.. Take google search on Duckworth over at downwithtyranny before you make a firm decision, por favor.
She’s a total Blue Dog in the making, imo. Just ask Rahm Emmanuel.
Yeah, I agree with you on Biden and Clinton. Biden was up close and dynamic with his personal life and then he faded back it felt like on some of the issues. And then overgeneralized throwing in provocative Russia intimation. Oy vey.
And Clinton was charming and good enough… but no personal energy for Obama. I guess he did well considering his strong feelings about wifey.
I was hearing on radio so I missed the more sentimental images I guess, with family appearing, etc. We are family was pushing it hard. Not that subtle, huh?
Yep. The idea that I’m going to clap and cheer loud enough to drown out the truth-that Bush, Cheney, Obama, and Biden are marching in lockstep with regards to provoking Russia, for no real strategic reason-ain’t gonna happen. I’m not going to feel more inclined to go to war with Russia just because a Democrat starts it.
Busted, Life Is Crooked.
From day one of the caveman and cavewoman.
Some are more crooked than others . . .
This is not about crooked . .
There’s a chance for better than what we’ve had.
There’s a chance for prosecuting folks.
There’s a chance for repealing some Executive Signings.
There’s a chance of nationalizing some institutions to save our economy, jump start DOMESTIC JOBS, and reinstill the values of a middle class and greater opportunity for all . . . all the while maybe bringing back the constitution, naming some Supreme’s (may HRC get the first slot), saving Roe v. Wade, preserving Brown v Board of Ed and ensuring that science and evolution rules our academe’s instead of the Biblical Flood Carved Teh Grand Canyon.
And don’t GET me started on voting issues for blacks, browns, and native american’s . . . and the disenfranchised, the disabled, the poor and all others blocked from voting somehow cuz the GOP rigged it and polluted the Supreme’s, the AG, the DOJ, and all OTHER offices and departments of our government.
Busted, don’t you DARE fall lame ass off on the ‘they’re all crooked’ meme . .
Don’t you dare.
You pick yer ass up off the trailer floor, and you get some spine and you get in the game and pretend like your life, and everyone else’s lives depend on it.
Cuz that’s the stakes, hoss.
STAND UP!!! NOW!!!
Geebuz, I need to sleep . . I got some festing to do . . . but dammit Busted, MAN UP YA PUTZ!!!!
THINGS ARE GOOD AND YOU NEED TO STOP DROWNING IN YOUR ANGST!!!!
This is the time, it’s a cornerstone in history.
It’s deciding time.
This is history, at yer fuckin fingertips . . . crossroads.
Crux.
Do, or get done. But WAKE UP! STAND UP!!! *G*
I’m gone . . . fest fun fans my flames . . .*G*
nite suz
Gnite Suzanne, Time fer me to go Thud too.
Sorry fer being so negative folks but it sickens me to see what has happened to any form of dissent in this country.
Not mine.
Goodnight, Suzanne. I’m headed that way also.
Goodnight, all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
I’m old enough to think that if the Democrats fuck it up again, then we are all done for. Get it together — save your own damned self. If you think McCain is on your side, then get right on with trashing the Dems. It’s simple really.
Thanks for the caution. One speech does not a progressive make, eh? Guess I got caught up in the koolaid sharing myself. Will explore.
‘night, Busted.
G’ nite Suz and g’ nite Busted, thanks for Standing.
She’s great on Vet issues, not much else, iirc.
Only Patriots get exorcised about this stuff. You are one.
get some sleep
nite RonD
{{{{{{SUZ}}}} *G*
Yep, and music, too . . post festing.
Now, like Da Spook, I really REALLY need to go *poof* and nitey.
Thanks for the props . . . 4 Day Chili Verde is next.
Then, a discourse of cooking, foods, utensils, stories in the biz, and recipes.
And music, galore . . . primers one and all, boring for the in crowd that knows it.
But it’s MY story. And Da Spook and Da Betsy give me a place . . . to tell it.
Now, it’s off to festing . . . . one time, you GOTTA make this one.
http://www.strawberrymusic.com
One. Time. Ya gotta make it.
Camp space will be held for your bio/carbon imprint at HowdyVille. *G*
*snoozzzzzzzz*
Repubs: more war; forced birth (you’re 10 years old and your daddy fucked you — give birth — god wants that); oligarchy to the max; ecology — screw that!; tax the poor so the rich can promote capitalism. And so forth. I could go on, but why?
nite larue
Hey, Kucinich was up there cheering them all on. Yeah, I see the need.
Pragmatism is important, but so is moral menschness.
There is a danger of being so strategic, and looking to the followers as to where they most probably want to be led … that is a recipe for … well… where we are today.
IMHO….
Dither, if you will, over who said what. Great speakers spoke to you. The Democratic Party is not perfect — for sure! But the alternative is entirely grim. Grow up and take charge.
Hmmmm . . . what feets have YOU held to fire?
You gonna give it to the Pubs?
Go ahead, vote for the green, independent or McCain.
Go ahead. *G*
But please, on a so called progressive site, don’t be playing some kind of GOP regressive whine about what I believe in for this time around.
If you don’t get on board, then you can HAVE the repub’s you helped to enable.
And you can have the country they will deliver for you.
Have a nice life, I’m goin festing . . . unless there’s MORE jive I gotta contest . . . *G*
Don’t these fools get it? Everything our politicians say is self-satire, e.g., “In the 21st century, nations don’t invade nations.” That bullshit on behalf of Georgia who joined us in an unprovoked invasion of Iraq five years ago and had to bring their forces of occupation home from Iraq in a feeble attempt to intimidate the Russians — a mouse crawling up an elephants tail with rape on its mind.
Personally, I was pissed with the NPR reports on the speakers. I thought Kerry did well…. had he spoken with such energy in 2004 we might have had a different outcome. Hillary was good. Bill was good. The media is dissing some great stuff. I won’t fall into their nonsense. Now or never, I think.
Dude, we’re just blowing off steam. We’re on board here. All of us.
Larue, That had best be some awesome Chile Verde dude.
I haven’t had the television on anything but CSPAN this week.. reading what folks say about MSM in threads here is just forking horrifying. I don’t know how I ever watched them.
Not necessarily.. I mean i think we, in general, have the same goals, but I definitely do not agree with Larue today. Thank you very much.
FirePups: Eyes on the MSM, so Eureka Springs doesn’t have to.
Yes, Nader was wrong. Gore would have been light years better than Bush.
But Matt Drudge is leading the media narrative I recently read, and the media is leading the public. And the public estimated MAJORITY, the willfully ignorant quite often, is leading the party leadership. And that is pretty sad.
I wish I could get more warm and fuzzy about this election. I do want to fight McCain. Was an Edwards populist. Mourned for Edwards once. Mourned for Edwards twice. FISA hurt.
Very jaded about congressional corruption. Electoral college set up so candidates ignore bases and tap dance for swing states.
And fellow humans, so many, don’t seem to care about privacy, or torture, or hair-trigger war mongering, etc.
I do think Obama will win. I want to trust Obama. I want to trust that the Dems will turn the ship around.
I drove home from Santa Barbara this evening after caring for my daughter and her new babies in the NICU. I listened to Kerry speak and was well-pleased, and then the NPR analysts dissed him. I was disgusted. I don’t have words, and I couldn’t take notes while driving, but I was nonplussed, as it were. I don’t know what to say.
I was listening to wnyc… was that NPR.. I thought it was NY reporters. I was trying to call in to complain about the negativity at Kerry’s great speech!
Chris Bowers 13 hour old post…
Feeling Frustrated
I am feeling really frustrated today. I am sensing that something is wrong with this convention, and that there will be no bounce. I don’t know exactly what we need to do to get a bounce, but I do know that we haven’t done it yet.
Is it that the Democrats aren’t attacking McCain enough? Maybe, but they are attacking him some, and it is certainly an improvement on 2004. Also, it would be a terrible idea for Michelle Obama to personally deliver the negative.
SNIP
I do NOT think Obama will win. I think that the inherent racism in America will rise to the top. I think that people will sabotage their own better interests. I think that this hope will be trashed under a Rovian steemroller. I wish for better, but I don’t trust my own co-citizens. I hope I’m wrong.
Good night. Thanks for the exploration.
Listened to Kerry…he rattled the saber as well. He also hammered McCsin not as well as Biden. Biden needs to spend some time in the gym he has a spare tire to carry around. But gives an excellent speecch.
Missing Dodd what going on with our FISA fighter? And no Edwards?
Democrats eat their own.
BINGO!!!
Don’t need no stinkin Blue Dogs . . .
We can and WILL do better . . .
It will take a few erections, but if we don’t go to sleep like we did for The Contract On America for 30 years or more, then WE CAN DO IT!!!!
Damn you people are keeping me up when I shouldn’t be . . . ;-)
While I agree that racism will play some role in this election, I think it’s not written down just yet.
For what the Obama team pulled off in the primaries, Ive them a lot of credit, and I can’t believe that they don’t have some stuff up their sleeves.
G’ nite ll.. Thanks backatcha.
That’s like saying I should keep my mouth shut about the difference between Charles Manson and Jeffery Dalhmer!!!
Get it straight, the minute you stop going after these weasels you might as well join em.They are going to tell you everything you want to hear to get elected, whoever they are and sell your ass down the river the first chance they get.Who’s gonna stop them? you and all your flame throwin threats?
I will work for Obama. And I write my scary McCain-loving relatives in other states … and it is like talking to a wall … and I don’t want to face down racism or simply pig-headedness or machismo.
Anyway, hope you are wrong. I originally liked Edwards best, but I did factor in the lower depths of racism in this country.
We shall see. If the young ones stay committed they could help turn it around.
But… more wars with everybody.. makes the rest virtually impossible. We aren’t in an economic situation where a President Johnson/Obama can invade the heck out of SE Asia and still pass all the other legislation. Are we?
What killed me, really, is that NPR, of all stations, just seemed to trash all the speeches that I thought were so good. There should be a swelling of energy ….. but so much of the radio analysis was negative. I wanted to slap someone/manyones upside the head. but I’m busy….and whatever happens will happen. I’m tired of being totally impotent. Happy up America……you get what you get.
If you are going where I think you are going, then tell me this – Do you propose to simply pull out of Afghanistan?
G’nite. Thanks for the commentary – y’all are the best.
Oh yes, absolutely.
I am for reducing all MIC expenditures by 90 percent, which would still keep our MIC budget above China and Russia combined.
List, then, the responsibilities you think the US has to Afghanistan, and how do we fulfill them.
And for that matter, you may advocate the same plan for Iraq – we ask them what they want, we drop it off at the loading dock, and turn and run like hell?
They WON’T start it, if you vote for Obama . . . yer falling for the jive . . .
1) We get elected.
2) We don’t start a war.
3) If we are wrong, we hold feet to fire.
I mean, please . . .
Yer killin me . . . the cold war refuel is a neocon dream . . and as long as YOU and others continue to BUY into it, you are feeding the pub’s . . .
Let the guy get elected.
If he fails us, as Pelosi and Reid have, THEN we hold their feet to the fire.
But for now, you want to give it away on some kinda political moralism?
Please . . . get out of the way and don’t screw this up . . . . you might as well be working for the pubs n neocon’s.
Whatever we owe them (and it’s more than we could ever repay), we need to stop killing and occupying them above all else. If we can’t repay/help them without the need of an armed force, it should be off the table.
Hey, doing a drive-by and scrolling. I’m having the same feelings about the Obama campaign right now. Ambivalent.I SO want to believe….I NEED a strong leader …I will WORK to have that leader’s back.
But fuck, FISA?!!!
Bankruptcy bill?
No discussions, no input.
Of course I will support his campaign. vocally.
Financially, I’ll support the new progressives..Darcy Burner especially.
Because Donna Edwards is safe for right now, right? She doesn’t need money now..?.
So far, the Democrats are staying within the Village narrative: “Mistakes were made. The plan was poorly executed. Underlings were overly zealous. Torture may have occurred.”
They can’t come out and say, “McCain drafted and supported the DTA and MCA, which are affronts to everything America stands for,” because (sigh!) almost half of the delegates at this convention supported them too. And, the democrats need a united party. But, the conservatives didn’t get control of the Republican party without spilling some Republican blood, e.g., Lowell Weicker’s.
Night all See ya next late late nite (:>))
The US, with some help (very little help) has converted Afghanistan from a Muslim country to a Theocracy to a terrorist state, and finally into a narco-terrorist state.
Our options are ugly, but our responsibilities may be on par or even greater.
So then I must be one of the few who doesn’t give a fuck about any of the speeches? Sure, there’s been some nice speechifying, but it’s all just talk. These are the same clowns that took impeachment off the table, and lined up for their turn to let AT&T to use their tongue for toilet paper.
Hi openhope. I’m not sure if she has to go through the Nov. ballot again this year or not.
Well, McCain seems to think that “Gasolina” is about a petroleum by-product. But fans of Daddy Yankee (McCain called him Yankee Daddy, BTW) know that Gasolina is slang for “semen” and one drills in quite a different way to produce it. Engine = vagina. Cats are females. Many of Yankee Daddy’s lyrics are pretty misogynistic, and he has an assault charge against him.
I guess this is what the Republicans have to do to improve their street cred with Hispanic youth…but it would be like Al Gore hangin’ out with G.G. Allin or something.

Libby: I got a call from Denver tonight from my cousin in law to likes to emphasise she is registered Republican. She watched Hillary and was impressed. The call before this not so pliant. Now she is talking about her boss, an offshore real estate development promoter and Democrat who will be at Mile High tommorrow. Their will be a lot of orange there tommorrow and atheletes like mile high. I think my cuz is softening as she says she really is an independent. Bet she votes dem if Obama starts making his plans clear.
A lot of people put words in his mouth in their speeches as if to move him back to the left on policy. I don’t see Repubs able to offer their base much motivation. They have spent all their political capital on big oil, war, and big Corporation. They left the voters out.
Our dumbfuckery with Afghanistan goes back further than that. Russia didn’t go into Afghanistan just for shits and giggles, they were trying to back the secular, communist government. But back then, we thought communism was far more dangerous than extremist theocracies.
Oh. Honest?
Teh snark in here is often hard to wade thru . . . ;-)

*poof*
Look at that track record and tell me we are capable of doing anything right or that we will ever truly have such noble intentions? Those noble Clinton/Dem sanctions really worked out for iraq in the 90’s. I see far to many of the same D’s this week as those who led us through the 90’s to be so easily fooled. No amigo.. we need to come home, all the way home, bases and private militia and all. It’s time to do some national soul searching and reconfigure our relationship with energy with all available resources and due diligence.
How would Al Gore hang out with G.G. Allin? The dude’s been dead for 15 years.
Last time there was a vacumm in Afghanistan the Taliban filled it after the Russian were Russia kicked out. Who holds Afghanistan and the Al Queda in pakistan?
Busted, I’m outta here for a week . . .

Yer gonna LOVE this one, hoss . . . *G*
It’s MADE for the urban experience . . . 707!!!!
I am not personally attached to the otherworldly notion that ‘if we leave, they will have won.’
There is no win to be had. But it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to conclude what will happen there with no outside presence. I wish to heck that it wasn’t us, but generations of fuckery™ have given us this. We did this, and we did it a long time ago, and we perpetuated it the whole way right up to today.
Your are SO boss!!!
*G*
N that’s that . . . . I keep staying up, and I KNOW I need to sleep . . .
4 hours . . . ouchvay!!! lol
Our policies are set and controlled by people outside of congress’s eyes for a purpose
“1974 had seen the unraveling of the Watergate scandal, in which the hand of the CIA Old Guard in domestic politics was revealed. Finally, by 1976, it had become widely perceived as the rogue Agency. In the “Year of Intelligence,” the Church and Pike Committees publicly exposed decades of shocking crimes carried out and covered up by the intelligence community. This forced newly-elected President Carter and Congress to finally exert real oversight and limit intelligence operations around the world.
In August 1977, CIA Director Stansfield Turner ordered 823 positions within the covert Directorate of Operations eliminated, firing most of the Agency’s hard men such as Ted “Blonde Ghost” Shackley, Thomas Clines, and Edwin Wilson. Their response was to take their deadly talents and wares into the private sector. That same year, Armitage left his DIA post in Iran, where he worked with Richard Secord and the Shah’s Secret Police, SAVAK, and was reassigned to State Department cover in Thailand.
In a bid to reestablish their independence, Right-wing Agency operators turned to new sources of cash and foreign patronage, particularly the Saudis, for the resources needed to shake off strictures imposed by President Carter and the Democratic Congress.
Through the Safari Club, Trento writes, “the Saudi royal family had taken over intelligence financing for the United States” at 102. The shared cause of anticommunism justified the privatization and merger of U.S. and Saudi intelligence, but it also opened avenues for personal and political enrichment for those who would create and run a run a shadow oligarchy. It created a set of alliances and mutual obligations. It was also highly illegal under U.S. law for American intelligence officers and officials to accept private foreign cash — whether or not this was the original intention, this ended up allowing the Saudis, Pakistanis, and other foreign members in the Safari Club blackmail and veto power over those U.S. officials involved. George H.W. Bush and those around him who had accepted the deal also had to live with it.”

all this election stuff is just worhless foam from the mouth
On all of that we agree.. And your idea of helping is nice.. but it’s not what I heard tonight at all (save Kerry’s 3 words on no torture).. I heard John McNeospeak lite (not very lite for that matter). Far from pretending to have anything but more military solutions…escalations even.
Once again, we simply have to stop killing and occupying long before anything good can come from us, imo.
I think the Democrats tried to reach the “center” and played it too cautiously in 2000 and 2004. They didn’t challenge the Republican core philosophy. Admittedly, it was harder back in 2000 because Dubya had no real Executive record…in Texas most everything runs via the Legislature. Outside of patronage positions and the negative acts of refusing clemency and vetoing some legislation, the Governor is a cipher. But by 2004 there was more than enough ammunition against Bush. Despite this Kerry tried to imply that Bush was a nice guy…just misguided.
It seems that Obama has given the orators carte blanche to attack the Republicans on issues, actions and associations. They are no longer simply “misguided” though good-hearted Congresspersons and Administrators. Since 2006 they have been recognized as corrupt. And attacking that record was succesful THEN. I don’t think that they would be doing this unless it was cleared with the Obama Campaign.
BTW The Republicans must feel a little like the London Olympic Committee after seeing the opening ceremonies in Beijing. “How do we beat this?”
Any bets on how many people will show up to McSame’s “15,000 people” rally in Ohio? 15? 800?
Don’t agree with what?
Send me an email . .
I’ll get back to you post 9/2 . . .
And hoss, I really want to hear THIS one . . *G*
Yer there, I’m here . . . I wanna hear WHY . . . *G*
My bitch with Kerry is that when he needed to stand up for his country, his party and himself he:
-listened to consultants and wimped out
-got stagefright and wimped out
-never had the courage of his convictions and wimped out
His more bellicose militarism aside, tonight he gave the speech that he should have given 4 years ago.
Busted, my bad, here’s the linky:

Needles N Pins . . . *G*
Speak of the devil…
Kerry up now on C-Span 2
I was just citing Kerry’s acknowledgement of torture tonight as a good thing (grasping for straws to find something good about what they all said in re foreign policy).. the point was.. tonight’s foreign policy night.. presented a lot of failed old faces (Madeleine Albright, wtf?!) in thinly veiled neo con speak.
That is terribly hard to argue with.
yep
But, you don’t live in the USA, do ya?
So . . . . you CHOOSE to live overseas.
And so . . . ya know?
Yer dukin a wierd fight, hoss . . .
I’m not sure I buy into YOUR insights, given I lived overseas as a young boy.
And as long as I’m here and you are THERE, it’s just hard still, for THIS traveler, to buy into your posits.
Now, if you came back, and used your experiences, to move us forward . . .
But you haven’t . . . yer there . . not here.
Ya know?
Yer not livin our pain.
But you want to buy into the profits of our labor.
Over there. Not here.
You want to be there, and adjudicate what’s here.
I can’t buy that.
Sorry, FDL. Sorry ES . . .
I’d rather buy into foreign news sources with a perspective that comes from abroad, rather than an expatriot who espouses life abroad and don’t live what we have to . . .
Harumph.
Oh man, what are you trying to do to me? /s 80’s music, blech.
A-fucking-men!
Larue – are you kidding? Eureka Springs lives in… wait for it… Eureka Springs, ARKANSAS.
He was alive when Tipper was prating on about “indecent lyrics” – it would have been the equivalent of Gore trying to get credibility with the “alienated youth” during the first Clinton-Gore campaign by talking about the poetry of Allin’s oeuvre. Saying “Gasolina” is a song about “energy independence” and pandering to “Yankee Daddy” (sic) is about the equivalent.
It actually is more of a Borak moment, I suspect, showing just how out-of-touch McCain really is.
I hope they attempt to dance to it at the Republican Convention.
Maybe they’ll also dance to one of Meghan McCain’s favorite Ramone songs “My Brain Is Hangin’ Upside Down”…oh wait that’s actually “Bonzo Goes To Bitburg” (scratch that :-)
newt- and, don’t forget that Kerry kept kinda sorta promising to challenge the results in O-HI-O. And, he had extra $$ left over, and as far as I can remember, we never got an answer to that.
I dunno, maybe I was reading too much BradBlog at the time… ;) correct me if I am wrong.
Read “Caravans” by Michener. It was going on in the 1950’s…though the Brits were more involved since they were the colonial overlords of Pakistan/India.
Call me a traitor to the cause, but I for one am not pledging my vote to any candidate at this stage of the game. I’m officially undecided, and candidates must earn my vote.
Yes, Larue, Clinton was my Governor when I was in elementary school. Learned the hard way about conservative Dems who talk nicely and measure their success by how many progressive votes they can garner while shooting them in the back at the same time. Pardon me if I call it as I see it, once again. New front man face, same old song and dance..
sorry, I meant we never got an answer as to what happened to the extra $$. He may have contributed later to other Dem campaigns- vague memory of that. But, he didn’t use it to the best to fight back at the time.
For the record, we both read Brad.
But this: Political conventions are not just 4-day partys. They are relationship and momentum-building energizers, and yes – lovefests.
Making the most of a convention is a simple matter – feed your people red meat for the fall and let them loose.
An invigorated Dem party, post-convention (and when/if the candidates decides to put up his dukes) in 2004 would have/should have made Chimpy irrelevant.
Neocon operatives in and out of government want to keep the ME in turmoil. They have been successful at making it difficult to achieve peace which is the antithesis of their MIC (war machinery). False flag and tounting Nations like teasing a caged wild animal is ongoing. It is unrealistic to “wish peace”. Peace takes a lot of ground work and preparatiom and as Bill Clinton aptly pointed out we have not been waging diplomacy. Even in the best of times peace is a challenge as resources demand increase and resource decrease.
Will the ME get peace or will they get something that is less painful but not peace.
I wear a peace hat every day. I am a believer in peace. And the “Dominno Theory” as a reason to take on South East Asia was more fear mongering. Fighting Nazi Germany was not fear mongering. Opposing Jihadists from Nukes is not fear mongering. I think to the greatest extent possible diplomacy is the first defence tool. Our Military is over commited and cannot operate with restraining rules of engagement when they are wearing a target and in harms way by being there. It makes sense to withdraw from Iraq. But Afghanistan and Western Pakistan hold some serious threats that need to be checked. We should have stayed in our no fly zone strategy and containment. I had questions about the Us Involvement in Balkans.
I can tell you this: I am a nieghborhood watch captain and will resist crime. I have organised those meetings. Without the police/sheriff deterence/presence more crime. Same with unstable regions. Their has to be a lot of talks negotiations and confernces. But Iraq we have to leave.
Can the UN handle that?
I vaguely recall wondering what happened to that 10 million bucks, how it would have helped in Ohio.
1,747 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Larue:
My God citizen Larue, what the fuck are you sayin’…is it that no one ken complain of our country’s actions or our behavior in the world unless they live here??!! How stupid is that?!! Or is it that no one can disagree with YOU unless they chant some silly national loyalty oath and carry a national ID card??!!
Well citizen, this is one union card carryin’, American born military veteran who didn’t serve in this country’s military for anythin’ like the requirements for free speech you are advancin’ here. In fact, everythin Sister Eureka Springs says in her comment is right fuckin on and even if it weren’t she’s got every fuckin right ta say it.
Tell me your comment is jest a spoof and you are really a dumb blond in disguise!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION THE RIGHTS YOU SAVE COULD BE YOUR OWN!!
Rumors are McCain will announce his VP selection on Friday in an effort to get some of the wind out of the sails of the Democrats. Pleghm-baugh is going catatonic about reports that McCain has selected a Pro-Choice running-mate. That means it could be “Holy-Joe”…or perhaps Carly Fioroni or other female corporatist. hard to think of any remaining Pro-Choice politicians in the Republican party (Ahhhnold being ineligible).
“We’ve just lost the election” Phlembaugh howls, in a last chance effort to scuttle McCain’s selection. Novak’s Brain begins to exude from it’s cranial vault, and Coulter begins a banshee wail.
I’m starting to realize that the problem I have in signing up for any campaign is that I was raised by fucking intellectuals.
It’s hard to be shaped by historians like Kenneth Roberts, a Pulitzer Prize winnning historian known as the historians’ historian, who’se books on the beginning of our country are as vital now as they were when I got kicked out of high school Gov. class for referring to his footnotes as an argument against why we should not be in Vietnam.

On the anniversary of Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast…
Nice McCheese.
He’s made some bonehead moves, but for this one he will pay dearly.
Head on, John.
Citizen Norske, Thanks for your support, but just so ya know. If I were a sister the only kind I could be is a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence, but I am a fellow who doesn’t swing that way. *g*
Sorry BROTHER Eureka Springs…but what’s important is whatchu say and shit man, I gotcher back…and you are soooo right on about the Clintons and their very real obeiscence to our corporate rulers. (And before ya take me apart for my spellin’, I’m at work and don’t have a spell check)
Perhaps Johnny Boy and Holy Joe will share some birthday cake…like he did with Bush as Katrina was bearing down on New Orleans? Happy Birthday Johnny Boy!
Maybe the demonstrators at the RNC will bring along some birthday cakes and play MacArthur Park (i.e. “who left the cake out in the rain”).
BTW seems that the anticipated “Days of Rage” much hoped for by Limbaugh didn’t pan out. Not that there weren’t demonstrations. 3000 Anti-War Iraq Vets march in Denver. Without a permit, outside the restricted “free speech zone” and it still went off peacefully.
The next Obama ad – right fucking here.
newt- I exactly get that. I was not slamming Kerry on his performance this eve. He did a great job. I was just responding to the points you listed. And, some have criticized other speeches as not being total “keepers” for the ages. Hillary’s. Bill’s. etc. But my reaction was different. They had a job, for the sake of ramping up enthusiasm and moving forward, and they did that job damn well. (I will leave Biden out of this- I didn’t listen, so nothing to say on that.)
Actually our involvement with the arabs goes all the way back to sometime around 1780 and the whole Barbary pirate thing where we chose to bribe them to stop attacking our merchant ships before we had a navy. Thus we wrote the constitution to form a navy rather than bribe em.But your right the biggie was the treaty of Versailles after ww1 that split the ottoman empire up between France,Russia and the Brits which we are dealing with to this day.
It’s all good, Norske. Sounds like you have a really cheap office manager./s
Really, the last speech for the ages was November 19, 1863
I won’t pretend that I don’t just love political rhetoric, but there is little profundity to be found anywhere…
Birth of a child, death of hero or loved one, and possibly committing the Republic to a dangerous course in order to save it.
Maybe he was funnin yah? G)
Openhope and Cinnamonape Ho! As as the Shaman says Ho! Good hearin you. Raven is never more?
Good discussion ES we have to Stand for what we believe for sure but building back America is a big big long job. The lessons of history have repeated themselves and the voters do not learn. The greatest battles to be fought are within.
We have a constitution to protect us but without a willing congress no good.
We have to buy the media back to prevail.
Aaarrrggg!!!!
History!!! But perhaps not just the history written by the winners.
REAL history.
Friday would be John McCain’s 72nd Birthday…that’s 72 years old!!!
August 29th…the day that Katrina made landfall and breached the levees of New Orleans. The day we lost an historic, major US city due to the failure of the Bush Administration to adequately maintain the levee systems. Thousands died as a result of a lack of preparedness by Bush administration appointees.
Bush and McCain found it more important to be in a photo op than to engage themselves in something as mundane as a hurricane destroying New Orleans. The cake wasn’t even eaten, it was left out on the runway to crumble…crumbling like the inadequately constructed and repaired levees of a great American city.
Obama refused to hugie kiss Pelosi after his appearance tonight. Thought that that was interesting she did not get the blessing.
Couldn’t agree more… and I don’t know if I can afford to buy out ABC Disney.
big brother can you spare a dime? /s
Biden’s son up now on C-Span 2
Gee, who would have thunk:
News Box-North Korea suspends dismantling of nuclear facilities
I nailed Bush last week when he slipped into New Orleans nine days ahead of the anniversary to take credit and run. Anyway, it’s a video worth spreading around if you choose.
about kerry, my daughter said it was a good answer by kerry; it just took him four years to come up with it.
that you did
Well the question was about Afghanistan and the USSR, I thought. I’m well aware of the relationship of the US with piracy in North Africa. In fact one of the first US treaties with a foreign power was with the Sultan of Tripoli in an agreement to cease piratical raids against US flagged vessels (we also tried to impose a pro-US emir by force).
That Treaty of Tripoli, BTW, also contained a clause expressing no animosity to the Tripolitanians due to religious differences…that the “United States was not a Christian state”. The Treaty was signed drafted by Washington, but eventually signed by John Adams after unanimous consent from the Senate. The full text, including the statements declaring that the US was not a “Christian nation” were published in both Philadelphia and New York papers. There was no dissent in Congress regarding the section.
Given that the Constitution was being drafted about the same time it’s a bit hard by “originalists” to argue that the founders intended the nation to be a Christian State…but that was clear from the “no religious test” provision.
Beau Biden…the next Senator from Delaware?
If I’m not mistaken, that treaty not only expressed no animosity, but mentioned the Muslim religion by name… Muselmen I believe it was framed…
There may be a media sale after this election…like 10 cents on the dollar.
What if progressive citizens bought it or some of it?
Panhandling for truth…sure here’s a dime for your cup… clink.
Signing off for rowing recovery, did a smart four miles in my scull earlier in the fog time to let the GHs kick in and refuel ny calcium pumps. Thanks for the discussion. Happy canoeing to you sir. I thought I saw Raven on the previous thread expressin’ himself about someone that said no Vets would vote for Obama. The Raven swooped down and ripped the eye out of that argument.
I didn’t know this.. Very interesting and helpful. Thanks!

When Bandar can back the Brits down there is reason to be concerned
“Saudi Arabia’s rulers threatened to make it easier for terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed yesterday.
Previously secret files describe how investigators were told they faced “another 7/7″ and the loss of “British lives on British streets” if they pressed on with their inquiries and the Saudis carried out their threat to cut off intelligence.
Prince Bandar, the head of the Saudi national security council, and son of the crown prince, was alleged in court to be the man behind the threats to hold back information about suicide bombers and terrorists. He faces accusations that he himself took more than £1bn in secret payments from the arms company BAE.”
Bush probably backed his ass
Balsy little bastard
The Guardian piece?
Spot on… ” Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. “
Treaty of Tripoli
The Boston clipper ships were trading with the Muslim pepper ports of Sumatra starting decades earlier. Pepper was how Elihu Yale and the Peabody’s made their millions. Pepper, of course, was critical in the preservation of meat in the days before refrigeration. Peppered and spiced meats could last through a “gameless” winter or a smoldering summer, and conceal the smell and flavor of spoilage.
Most of the trade was without incident, but there were pirates in that region as well. About the same time that Jefferson sent out Marines to North Africa, there was another incident involving the capture and ransoming of sailors from one of the Bostonian clippers. The Marines were sent out to locate, and destroy, the pirate chief that had undertaken the attack. Other Sumatran Pepper ports were more than willing to assist, and joined in the raid.
The Dutch, British and French were all trying to establish trade monopolies along the coast, the American s were constantly at risk from attack, not only by pirates, but also foreign vessels.
Very nice. Thanks.
nite pups
Do you know the name of the book that Twain wrote about his experiences over there?
I was heading for bed. And then had a FUCK!! moment.
Imagine what an Iraki family says before heading for bed.
And maybe our young soldiers will be breaking down their doors. Or maybe our young soldiers will be forced to set up road blocks. Or maybe our young soldiers will just have to shoot people, because it’s war. Right?!!
It’s just what we do. Nothing personal. Democrat or Republican,….war is never off the table. Fuck Afghanistan civilians. Pawns and unmentionables all of them.
Oh,shit. We are the same people in theory as the people our Congress authorized tortured. We ARE the rabble. We are the next target of the “immigration” raids.
