If Obama gets in he will have a high cabinet position. As to his electoral clout, I think we always exaggerated it. It was limited to a small segment of the Democratic constituency. He wouldn’t have brought in independents. He’s a smart and terrific guy, but his reputation in politics has been amplified by the echo chamber. He spoke out of turn. My guess is that Obama’s people were holding back the particular point he made until later in the campaign, and he screwed the timing.
