Looking over today’s Democratic National Convention schedule, you’ve got to love the lineup for the early evening:
- The final speaker offering remarks at the end of hour No. 3: Rahm Emanuel
- The first speaker at the start of hour No. 4: Steny Hoyer
- The keynote speaker: Mark Warner.
A preview of the first two:
I respect and admire John McCain’s many years of service, both in the Navy and in the Congress, and I believe that he is the only candidate with the experience, judgment and wisdom to lead this count — wait, which convention is this again?
As for Warner, well, there’s this bit of news today:
"There may be parts of the speech that aren’t going to get a lot of applause," Warner said Monday, "but I’ve got to say what I believe will get our country back on the right path."
Some Democrats were already complaining, saying that Warner’s job is to put a dent in Republican John McCain’s image.
"This isn’t the Richmond Chamber of Commerce," said Democratic consultant Paul Begala.
When Paul Begala is the one calling you out, you know there’s something amiss.
Oh well. At least we can look forward to seeing Lily Ledbetter tonight. I’m also eager to hear Gloria Craven of Unite Here.
It’s just going to require some bobbing and weaving to keep my blood pressure at something approaching normal.
[Credit to Eli for the speech preview.]

Rahm and Steny. The stupid wing of the Democratic Party.
Hello, again, David. Still having a wonderful time and wishing we were here, I presume?
We are “there” in spirit!
awesome. nothing like Stainy Whore: maybe he’ll be secretly videotaping the whole thing. we know how he loves to spy on people.
Ann,
Did you hear about the sprinkler system going off in the Fox News skybox? heh-heh!
I’m worried about Mark Warner, too. I hear he has said if they think he’s going to be an attack dog, if that’s what they wanted, he’s not their guy. Come to think of it, if he doesn’t give an excellent speech, Mark Warner ought to worry about himself. He just may want to run for Prez someday (if Hill ever realizes she’s probably not ever going to be Prez) or even a cabinet position, so he needs to move this party forward, and part of that is taking McLame two steps back.
No! What happened, or gotta link?
Don’t tell me KO’s favorite tv unpersonality blew his top in there
Dear teacher,
May I please have a hall pass tonight.
I don’t need whut these guys are gonna try ta sell me.
My time is valuable.
I’ve got a couple of cats to pet in peace & quiet.
Thanking you in advance for understanding.
Adie
As far as making Repigs angry, there’s one repig I’d like to make furious, so much so his temper rings from one coast to the other. That would be McLame! I’d like him to show his ass so bad that we’ll all be calling him McBluster, even the repigs!
so much for smoking in bed with the foxes, chickens.

Too much junk:
To be honest, there was one exchange between KO and Chris Matthews that made me proud last night. Wish I had a transcript to describe the exchange, but to paraphrase, it went something like KO saying why isn’t it praised when we see someone helped out to get a better education through Pell grants or loans or whatever student aid they could get, when we see these two people who worked so hard to get to where they are today. Then Chris Matthews said that he couldn’t have gone to college but for the student aid he got (can’t remember which kind he sited). Then KO said he’d go him one better; he was the first in his family in 100 years to become a college grad, and he did it because Cornell was part of a seven college (something…)so not only did he get assistance but he only had to pay state rates. I give them credit. Makes people see these programs really do pay off by helping folks to become more useful productive citizens, and reinforces the values that put the programs into place in the first place.
Didn’t they tell him that this speech isn’t for his campaign? (I’m f*cking tired of the ‘centrists’ who can’t stand having daylight between the Dems and the GOP party. They need to decide which party they want to belong to, and get off the fence.)
agreed. I thought Chris did a great job yesterday. He’s got the talent and education and smarts. All my kidding basically traces to identifying with him a bit. I’m also a grown-up hyperactive kid, just as I strongly suspect he is. It is so-o-o-o hard to control sometimes. Many of us never ever out-grow it. A lot of people don’t realize that.
Marcy and I got an interview with Blue Am candidate Annette Taddeo – Florida – in a district with demographics changing in a way that heavily favors her candidacy. Plus she is excited about massive turnout that will help her race and other downticket races.
She is very optimistic and determined. We have a winner here.
Thanks, Dakine01 and AZ Matt, for the links. Pretty funny. I agree with C&L; just bad Karma, or their chickens came home to roost!
Sounds like it is going to be a love fest tonight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c855XLjrdXQ
It is a little difficult to understand how they can find time for people like Rahm and Steny but Wes Clark got the bum’s rush.
Saw Mark Warner speak at the first YearlyKos in Las Vegas, when he thought he would run for Prez. Was not impressed by his speaking, although he was a good governor for Virginia. He’ll make a good Senator too, but he’s not gonna give our base the red meat we want to hear from the keynoter.
If tonight is another soft bipartisan lovefest, we are DOOOOOOOMED!
I was listening to NPR yesterday on the way home and they were doing a follow-up on 2 students who were trying to find the money to get into the colleges they wanted to go to. One young lady couldn’t because her parents could not afford to go deep in debt due to ongoing medical bills her father had. Both students had very good grades from a rigerous high school. Bush has done a great deal to screw over middle class families and the ability to get higher education.
Listen, all we have to do is wave a big stack of money in front of their faces to get a last minute edit of their stupidity.
I’m sure that’s what the McCain people did with Steny et al. Works like a charm.
the Keynote is Bygones ?!?!?
what time will Ledbetter take the stage ???
I have a church meeting tonight. What a pity I will miss most of this.
BooHoo.
And just every once in a great while, He smiles. Hell, that one must have been good for a chuckle.
Bush accepts no blame for the problems of people who are not his base. Is it his fault that they were not wise enough to be born wealthy? He worked hard to do that and they should have as well.
More like rats roosting.
If I knew I’d never had to hear or read another remark by Carville or his better half, I’d be dancin’ in the street.
When will the Dems understand that this is not a tea party? This is battle to the political death – especially this time. Politics can be mean and ugly but you need to know how to play the game and the Dems just don’t seem to get it. I have never been impressed with Warner and I can’t see why he was asked to make this speech except to try to take Va for Obama. I guess that’s a good reason but not quite enough for me.
Debt is the gatekeeper to the colleges that rich families attend. If you are not rich, you don’t get in. Class enforcement. Don’t expect anyone to care. They do not see the benefit in educating the masses, and they do not plan on paying for welfare either.
Hey poor people! Stop being poor on my dime! You’re making us look bad!
Wonder who mom and dad voted for
I must agree with my wife. Obama is going to lose and the Democraps are not going to win as big as they COULD have in the Senate or House.
Why? Because they are STILL doing precisely the same thing that lost Kerry the race in 2004 and Gore the race (at least, made the race close enough so that the SCROTUS could appoint Bush without causing an outright civil war): they are letting themselves get all groggy from the punches being landed by the GOP/Rovians. They are FAILING to aggressively attack, attack, attack the GOP, Bush, AND MCCAIN! Instead, they are falling all over themselve to fellate McCain for his useless POW experience (no different than that of any and all other POWs who are not qualified to be President as a result).
They are trying, once again, to “ride above the fray” and win votes by being nice and “adult”.
They are getting their ASSES handed to them AGAIN. Obama is crashing because he is either ignoring the shit coming from the Rovians or (with few exceptions) he is answering the attacks with explanations that the attacks “just aren’t true!” This doesn’t work. It NEVER works. It wont work this time.
McCain is going to continue to erode Obama down to a nub. That erosion will start taking a bite out of the rest of the race too.
The Democraps are ineffectual, lillylivered, weak, and TOTALLY divorced from reality as it is, instead pretending to believe that reality is as they wish it to be.
Fucking idiots.
The Democraps called (again) to my home the other night. My wife, in exasperation for their harassment in begging for money that they are not going to get (not a dime since FISA), told the caller to QUIT CALLING! WE AREN’T VOTING THIS YEAR!
This isn’t true…though if Obama and the Democraps keep this limpdickedness up we may well sit this one out. All they manage to do is piss me off more and more with each and every mambypamby, mealymouthed, useless and ineffective response (or total lack thereof) to GOP attacks.
There better be some punches thrown real quick. Dropping, hardhitting punches in the dick against McCain and his GOP ilk real quick or what my wife told the Democrat on the phone will become reality.
Quit fawning and reiterating McCain’s totally blah military history. IGNORE IT. Pretend it doesn’t exist, or if forced to recognize it, turn it against him the way Wesley Clark did. Attack him (indirectly) for his age and memory. Attack him for his outright warmongering and wishing for more. Attack him for his houses (more of that, and louder). Attack period.
With Emmanuel and Hoyer, this portion of the DNC is a total loss. This equals the GOP’s first night with Bush, his President Cheney, Lieberman, etc. Total loss.
Sheesh.
Carville has certainly worn out his welcome. Being a Clinton toady is of little value to anyone who is not a Clinton.
ohhh lordy – dems aint got no fire in da belly!! sheesh – here we go again!! W T F !!!
God works in mysterious ways.
Wouldn’t it be great if the delegation expressed its displeasure with business as usual by booing and/or walking out on that kind of BS?
Thanks for the stinker of a FISA bill, Steny! We remember!
Just push the chair back and say “no more jello for me, ma!” That would be some kinda free speech!!!
Their high school was a magnet school and most kids were from lower income families.
Ledbetter to speak in the 7:01 to 8 pm hour
carrumba !!!! Alejandro Escovedo – to perform in 5 – 6 pm hour
most excellent
I sorta disagree. It isn’t dems vs. reps anymore. It’s incumbent old guard vs. new guard. That’s why the Biden choice is brilliant (IMO).
The dems don’t even need a rove to bring down their candidate. They lurve themselves some status quo. It works for them. It just doesn’t work for America (voters).
They need a real Boston Tea Party!
Given HRC’s love fest for McShame during the primary and his choice for a mate makes me think hmmmmmmmmmm
This is voter suppression, Democrap style.
The GOP actually goes out and actively/physically suppresses the vote of their opponents. The Dems? They mentally suppress the vote of their own voters.
Tonight’s Schedule (huge sombrero tip Blue Texan)
So do democrats
Matalin might be an evil, lying, Republican but at least she can stay on message. Carville is just a deranged, gibbering idiot.
Another idea, compliments of FDR:
Cut the sound during these offensive speeches, start shouting from the floor “Obama, Obama” and let ‘er rip from there.
What they need is the protesters on the streets to break into the convention center and take over. THEY get it. The people in the building? Not so much. They’re very very comfy in their corporate pet status.
Was not impressed by his speaking, although he was a good governor for Virginia. He’ll make a good Senator too, but he’s not gonna give our base the red meat we want to hear from the keynoter.
I still think Evan Bayh’s presidential (later reduced to Vice-presidential) aspirations were shredded when he gave the mother of all milque-toast Key-Note Speech in 2000.
Obama, otoh, brought the house down in 2004.
One would be tempted to think that Warner might take note, and compare…
They probably would if they weren’t locked in free speech cages and getting pepper sprayed…
I’m going to have my own tea party – I will not be watching any of the convention until Obama speaks. I cannot take this bunch of sheeple.
yes she does.
I’m thoroughly convinced that the reason McSame was able to close the polling gap between himself and Obama was because of his many moves toward the right; as someone said on TV yesterday, when the two policies become so hard to distinguish between, the voter will go to the authentic one. He should not have betrayed his base on FISA and the several other things he did to try to capture centrist positions. In the meanwhile, he passed by many voters who were headed toward the left out of disappointment with the right.
Cornell has colleges on campus that are part of the State University system. Instead of a full private tuition at 38+K/year, you can earn your Cornell degree at State University tuition rates of 20K/year. Let me see if I can remember all the State Colleges:
College of Ag & Life Sciences
College of Human Ecoloogy
College of Industrial & Labor Relations
College of Veterinary Medicine
It’s a well known method to achieve an affordable Ivy League degree for NYS residents.
I&LR class of ‘77
Please. These are Democrats here. These aren’t people like you and I (or is it “you and me”…the rules seemed to have changed between when I was a kid and recently). They each live in their own cozy world of corporate favors that blocks out the sounds of the real world around them. This allows them to keep repeating the same mistakes again and again and again and again without ever being in danger of learning from those mistakes.
The polls are based on “likely voters”…those who voted previously in the last two elections…they are not asking all of the newly registered voters, so the polls are very inaccurate.
Still don’t understand that! Many people to speak I never even heard of. Wonder what sin Wes Clark committed? He might have made a good cabinet officer, too. I doubt that’ll happen now. Sure wish someone would explain.
Dan Rather just left, Katie Couric earlier.
Latest Gallup shows McBush up by two points nationally. I propose using that number to compute Obama’s “election bounce”.
And Biden does not represent status quo?
Corporate America loves him.
Dave, if you come to Saint Paul, the cab fares should be a lot better. A one-way trip to downtown Saint Paul will cost around $10 with a $2 tip.
If you haven’t already booked a hotel yet: Get a hotel in downtown Minneapolis. That way you can take the light rail into downtown Minneapolis straight from the airport, about a 30-minute ride, for $2. And that’s during rush hour. There are several buses that go between the two downtowns, but the one you want is the 94B or (even better) 94D Express. Those take less than half an hour (the 94D takes about twenty minutes) to go from one downtown to the other on I-94. Check http://www.MetroTransit.org for more options.
We’ll see.
I rather suspect it is indicative of the mistakes Obama has made in running hard to the right since winning the nom.
You cannot win against those who actually live, breath, eat, swim in the right wing by adopting those positions with slight modifiers to make you seem “reasonable”.
“I’m for endless war for good reasons!”
“I’m in favor of keeping troops in Iraq forever for good reasons!”
“I’m in favor of spying on Americans without warrants for good reasons!”
“I will use the dictatorial powers won by Bush for the Presidency for good reasons!”
“See? I’m unlike McCain because he would do ALL those things for bad reasons!”
Did the same to servicemen’s families until Jim Webb’s GI bill. Shameful.
Fraidy cat BO team called a variety of dem vets in high places asking them to publicly cut Clarke off. Some did, some didn’t.
For some reason, the BO team decided a while ago that McInsane’s military history was off limits. Bad decision.
Oh no are they getting divorced
That’s my point. agreed.
OT
BuzzFlash has a “Hippies for Obama” button. Funny.
Name dropper! ;)
Wonder what sin Wes Clark committed?
totally *sucked* in his appearance here at FDL?
The panel with Christy and Markos turns out to be tomorrow
Got one word for you: video tape? Maybe two: tivo?
Surely you jest? Clark committed the unpardonable sin of calling into question McCain’s POW experience as a valid and useful and exclusive preparation to be President. Rather than kissing McCain’s old, moldy, wrinkled, melanoma-infested ass for his POW experience, he actually called a timeout on McCain for his incessant use of “I was a POW!” as an excuse for all gaffs AND as THE experience required to be President.
Clark, for speaking plain old objective fact, has been ejected from “polite” sycophantic Democrat society.
Clark must have done something that really ticked off the Obama campaign, something greater than the remark to Schieffer about having been a POW not qualifying McCain to be president, which was simply the truth.
Bush and McCain don’t want to share the wealth.
Dan Rather just left, Katie Couric earlier.
did it appear that either of them had the slightest clue where they a) were, or b) might be going to?
Amen, brother?sister! How went the dentist visit?
Been meaning to ask, where’d the name come from?
sooo sad but soooo true……….
If I wanted to erase some stuff on my TiVo to make room for it.
Ummm let me think about it.
For Steny? For Rahmbo? For Warner?
Prolly not.
I wouldn’t read more into it than necessary. The DLCers advising BO demanded that Clark be excommunicated for questioning McCain’s POW useless experience. Plain and simple as that.
that would be my guess. Stoopid move.
Again bringing a knife to a gun fight.
“If tonight is another soft bipartisan lovefest, we are DOOOOOOOMED!”
My comment is a little rougher. I will withold it in the interests of civility.
Cleaned and sharpened, good for another six months.
I had used “catfood” as a screen name after the King Crimson song from In The Wake Of Poseidon, then awhile back I started using an image of Remy from Ratatouille as my avatar at TPM, at which point “ratfood” seemed more apt.
Breaking: Newly registered Dem, Vicki Iseman, does ad saying why she’s left McCain
the Republican partyfor Obama.Dreaming…sorry…*g*
its setting up to be 4 more years of bushco….. you think country is fucked now?? hah – wait til mcinsane gets done with you…. jus sayin
Nothing like fighting fire with gasoline
All the gossip that’s fit to print.
Lucky you! Last visit (for something revoltingly expensive), he found three new cavities……which, in turn, necessitated two more visits (to avoid being numb on all four sections). Baaaaaad bank balance month. :-(
That name explanation went way over my head (probably explained by the number of gray hairs on it) but it sure sounds good. *g*
I am mostly impervious to popular culture but occasionally absorb small amounts via osmosis.
Has anyone heard about some kind of computer glitch taking place now causing huge airplane traffic problems due to some problem with filing flight plans?
I heard that KO-CM exchange and yes it was refreshing to hear something positive from some well-compensated media anchors employed by GE about the important role of gov’t -assisted higher education. Someone can correct me, but iirc CMatthews got accepted into the Peace Corps in the mid-60s which meant that he thereby legally avoided the military draft for Vietnam. Yeah, I bet he’s not too down on gov’t programs to assist the youth!
Just on tv – computor system glitch affecting all domestic flights.
Not only that, but he’s worked for several Democratic members of congress and for Jimmy Carter.
OT, I know, and I don’t mean to be jumping up and down about this, but that airplane problem is apparently affecting flights all over the country. You should have seen the map CNN had up a few minutes ago!
FAA cannot permit any planes to take off or land because the flight plans cannot be filed and due to this massive computer glitch that has occurred affecting a broad swath of the east side of the country. Guess landings would be only in emergency cases until they can be cleared. Flights backing up countrywide.
Worked for former speaker of the house and a few months ago rumors were about that he was thinking of running for PA senator (Spectors seat)
I might be joining David Neiwart tonight in tossing a brick thru the teevee if I don’t hear Warner using that precious prime time keynote slot to take some well-deserved shots at Bush. Is Junior all that popular in VA these days?
As for my party, they never seem to learn. Gore failed to learn the lesson from Dukakis about not letting the oppo define you, about having to actually go out and fight for the contest using all the tools at your disposal, including defining your sorry opponent. Kerry, even more bizarrely and wimpily, then repeated Gore’s GE mistake.
Now I hope Obama isn’t going to pull a Kerry “let’s not offend the swing voters” nonconfrontational, above-the-fray postpartisan approach.
And no, Nancy Pelosi’s weak tea yesterday about how “George Bush is wrong!” is not what I’d call taking it to the oppo. I’m sure Steve Schmidt and Karl Rove were having a good chuckle as they watched her lame speech.
Nice outfit though.
5825 planes airborne, many circling. Oh, this is becoming really messy! Atlanta has 100 planes taking off; about 140-150 arriving. Wow! There anticipating a lengthy cleanup. No radar outages and they have not lost contact with any of the planes, so that’s good news.
As a Democrat, too.
Marcy interviewed for Italian television about her senator encounter yesterday.
Good freakin’ grief! Just switched over to CNN…….what happens with all the planes that are flying on minimal fuel?
They’re not blaming it on a cyber-attack, are they?
Not to panic – what is down is the program that deals with flight plans, From what I understand there is full communication with all planes. New flights plans cannot be filed
I love my Mac but we need to do something so that we are not completely dependent on computers. If a “glitch” can do this, our whole country could be shut down by an intentional attack on computers.
There have been gliches going on for a week or so. The program just crashed
The Democrats are in between a rock and a hard place.
They are funded by the same corporations as the Republicans.
All Republicans and Democrats are members in good standing of the U.S.A. Country Club. In interests and perspectives, the members of the USACC are more like each other, than they are like average Americans.
The Republicans have a full time, radio network of propagandists, a 24/7 Republican TV network, and the Republican favoring MSM is all in full time Democratic Party/Candidate Disparagement Mode. (Except K.O.) Why would a corporation give air-time to a populist messenger? They do NOT have a death wish against themselves.
Most of the (Independent) American voting public has been indoctrinated by years of propaganda by Reagan, curches, NRA’s, etc. to be emotionally pre-disposed against the Democrats.
The ony hope the Democrats have is to “pretty please” beg enough Independents to consider voting for them to win the election by one vote.
If the working stiffs in this country were able to mentally process the “facts on the ground”, and get really made about how the whole system is set-up to shaft them, Dennis Kucinich and Russ Feingold would be the flag bearers for this Democratic convention, not Barack bring the Democratic Lambs to the Republican wolves Obama.
I think Barack is shaping up as a bi-racial Bill Clinton. I hope I am wrong.
I doubt if much can be done to reduce are dependence on computers but we have to do as much as possible to make the systems used by agencies such as the FAA (a) reliable and (b) secure. In regard to security, I hope there is a place for Richard Clarke in an Obama administration.
According to this from CNN it is at one of two flight plan processing centers. Specifically at one south of Atlanta but that the other in Salt Lake City is up and processing.
Did my second on camera interview, this time for Reuters. Need to recharge the cattle prod now. What kind of a life is this for an introvert.
They never should have installed Vista.
No, at least, not yet. And Waccamaw, that would be some of those emergency situations I mentioned earlier. They have expressly said, there is no safety issue involved. They are in contact with all the planes and are processing things. Radar, etc., working.
707 !!!!!
No kidding.
Jane upstairs.
Jane’s upstairs
And I fully expect to see that happen in the not too distant future…….physical destruction shuts down selected areas of the country (that’s way too broad a generalization, I know) but the low-information citizens in this country have NO idea the disaster a cyber attack would generate.
Clark will be back. If Obama gets in he will have a high cabinet position. As to his electoral clout, I think we always exaggerated it. It was limited to a small segment of the Democratic constituency. He wouldn’t have brought in independents. He’s a smart and terrific guy, but his reputation in politics has been amplified by the echo chamber. He spoke out of turn. My guess is that Obama’s people were holding back the particular point he made until later in the campaign, and he screwed the timing. Timing is everything in the 36 minute news cycle.
I don’t think so. Why would they tell him to not even show up at the convention?
Icing on the democrat crap cake.
Let’s see, 20% of 18 million times 2 = 7.2 million — the probable initial deficit.
Obama, Pelosi, Reid are more dangerous than McCain, Pelosi, Reid.
Steny just finished…thank goodness. Whoever thought he’d be the least bit exciting, inspiring, or even able to read Teleprompters decently…well, they were mistaken. yawnf.
