I got back to our hotel late last night and put on CNN as I was getting ready to fall over into my bed, when the report came on about the three men arrested in the Denver area for suspicion in a plot to assassinate Barack Obama:
The action started around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when police in the eastern suburb of Aurora stopped a truck that was swerving erratically. The driver, 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell, had a suspended driver's license, and the truck was rented in the name of another person, said Aurora police Detective Marcus Dudley.
In the truck, officers found two rifles, including one with a scope; a bulletproof vest; boxes of ammunition; walkie-talkies; and suspected narcotics, Dudley said.
Aurora police, on edge because of heightened security surrounding the Democratic convention in Denver, alerted federal authorities.
Three hours later, at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, federal agents arrested Johnson, 32, at a hotel in Denver. He was being held on drug charges, Dudley said.
A half-hour after that, 33-year-old Shawn Robert Adolf jumped from a sixth-story window when authorities tried to arrest him at a hotel in suburban Glendale, police said.
Adolf was hospitalized and was being held on $1 million bond for several outstanding warrants involving drug charges.
Dudley didn't say what tied the men together but said more arrests were possible. One of the rifles was stolen, and authorities had traced it to Kansas, Dudley said.
We've already discussed here the likelihood that a looming Obama presidency would drive the far-right wingnuts completely over the edge and back into the realm of violence. Fortunately, these men -- if they really were plotting to kill Obama -- were neither very competent nor much of a serious threat to Obama, though I would wager they'd have wound up hurting someone had they not been caught.
The report on CNN occurred during the Larry King Live convention wrapup. Immediately after the report, who should show up on the screen but Michael Reagan, as part of King's show, which featured a regular phalanx of right-wingers who then got their shot at telling viewers why the Democratic convention sucked. (Side note: Gotta wonder if King will do the converse for the Republican convention.)
Yes, that Michael Reagan. The one who on his radio talk show two months ago attacked the "9/11 troofers" by telling his listeners repeatedly that someone should "take them out and shoot them." This is the kind of speech that, if spoken by a liberal, would earn them permanent banishment from the ranks of pundithood. But Reagan's hate speech made barely a ripple -- and there he is on CNN.
Obviously, the 9/11 troofers have nothing to do with Obama. But violent speech like this raises the cultural temperature enough that people start believing that shooting the people they disagree with is a legitimate expression. Especially when the people telling them it's OK to shoot the people they hate are showing up on CNN.
And then when the violence breaks out, of course, the Larry Kings of the world host programs wondering why things like this could happen.

Hey, David! Other than the crazies, how does it feel to be at this convention? Great, I hope!
cnn has become unwatchable
larry king’s address is one listed in ’spotlight’…….
also lists other cnn people.
and talking heads.
send him a little letter.
Why do right wing crazies get on the air with no problem, yet all liberals can get on TV is KO and Rachel? And is KO really a liberal or just PO’ed at what has happened to this country?
One would have thought that the rovians would have picked a more savvy crew but then maybe these guys were just a red herring?
Isn’t it possible to file an FCC complaint for inciting violence?
CNN went down hill once Ted Turner sold it.
A half-hour after that, 33-year-old Shawn Robert Adolf jumped from a sixth-story window when authorities tried to arrest him at a hotel in suburban Glendale, police said.
Lemme guess - that would be the guy who is pictured at the left, above?
Bright looking guy.
I remember my Political Science Professor cautioning about this possible phenomenon….when the press starts creating conflict and inciting behaviours so they can then turn around and cover it in a sensationilistic fashion…when the sensation subsides…lather rinse repeat……
Old Larry has been a CNN staple for so long that most folks probably do not recall that he got his start in late night talk radio. Hmmmm….
I’m not usually the one to point out that people have a “certain” look, try to stay above that kind of thinking, but…hello? Anybody else thinking Deliverance? Oh, my.
Has anyone ever figured out why that guy killed the Arkansas Demo party chairman?
If those guys were swarthy mid-easterners Dubya would be crediting his expanded police state powers for their capture.
good point.
Cletus Spuckler
I asked the same question at the time it happened. Don’t remember an answer. Oh, man, we should be able to. Stricter guidelines at a dfh website than a radio station on violence issues?
otoh, most “swarthy mid-easterners” don’t get so tweaked out on meth so as to render them unable to even drive a straight-enough line to avoid being pulled over…
The guy on the left looks like Ralph Reed, any relation?
I believe they are from the same rock
I don’t want to start a Whole Hillary Thing, but why does Arianna still hate her so much? She posts the ugliest photos of her.

You got it; sad, ignorant, losers….and druggies. Sort of like Oswald. The underbelly. No wonder security is out in big force; a sad necessity.
Good Morning David and Firedogs
aaarrrgghhh - just saw Pach’s comments about Movie Maker and I was to start my opus today - anyone else use it before ?
Thanks for sharing, David. Sorry if we went lowlife on your post. Oh, by the way, you look very intelligent, thoughtful and handsome in your shot.
I agree. About the only speech that is legally allowed to be infringed in this country is speech advocating the violent overthrow of the government. At this point, I wonder if it might be good if speech advocating violence against anyone on our public airwaves (or written form, for that matter)were to be considered illegal speech. The stakes are two high; too many lives are at risk.
It’s ok but iMovie HD is a lot easier to use.
Doesn’t this topic kind of deal with lower life forms?
I had a feeling you would be writing about this, David. I usually lurk these days, but read a lot here. I appreciate your focus on right wing terrorists and immigration, and have sent a lot of people to Orcinus to read what you have to say, especially after Postville. When I heard this news last night, my heart sank. It is like seeing a cockroach floating in the punch bowl at an otherwise great party.
Here in Iowa, I have been trying to do my part by working for Rob Hubler, who is running against Steve King in Iowa 5. The man who said Al Qaeda would be dancing in the streets if Obama won has said many worse things, and immigration is his crusade. He once constructed a scale model border wall while speaking on the House floor, festooned it with barbed wire, and observed that it could be electrified. “We do that with livestock all the time.” So long as it is acceptable to say such things in the Congress, we have work to do.
Yes. Enough to get city council meetings on line.
Two fine lookin’ examples of ‘Muricans ignoramus. Ya reckon there’s a single functioning brain cell between the two?
Isn’t it ironic that while Dubya expanded police state powers, as you say, he also reduced the actual amount of police on the streets?
And if there is one, it is likely thinking of protecting the HomeLand. Gag and scream
Raven - I am Mac challenged X~(
thanks Susan in Iowa - good to see you still with us - about Rep King, posted a link in the last few weeks that showed “extraordinary coordination” btw enforcement and justice in the run up to Postville - wonder where that pig fits in that scenario
I share your interest in ousting King. But, as long as Sioux County remains in the 5th District, it is going to be tough.
And, yes, one shouldn’t judge by appearances but every once in a while, ya gotta go with your “gut” reaction. *g*
This ties in with the latest anti-Obama joke going around where he appears at the pearly gates and St. Peter asks him why he should gain entrance. Obama answers “because I am the first black man to ever be President of America.” St. Peter asks, “when did that happen?” Obama: “Five minutes ago.”
Clinton’s community policing funding slashed by 60% since 05
You know, it’s almost like setting up the kill to mitigate against slow news days. Media are complicit in this. Media are complicit in this. Media are complicit in this. Oh, am I repeating myself?
It has more to do with the return of the Imperial Presidency than anything else. The Shock Doctrine enabled the Cheneyite neocon faction to re-assert vast new Presidential powers, along with a meek and compliant congress and press. According to the 9/11 commission report, the Administration received 52 separate warnings and never so much as called a meeting.
George Tenet and Richard Clarke burst into Condi’s office when she was the “National Security Advisor” before 9/11 and ran around like their hair was on fire because all the lights were blinking red.
She never even called a meeting.
She got a promotion and Dubya got more power. Sorta backwards if you ask me.
Can’t laugh: Bleach, please.
I recently saw that a Postville defendant filed a motion to disqualify the Chief Judge of the Northern District Court. Some pig fitting can be done with the article linked to.
It is interesting that Tom Latham (R-IA4)has been much more balanced in his response to Postville. Postville is in his district and he has been up there to meet with people and avoided saying anything very inflammatory.
The 4th is purple, the 5th is red. But I’m hearing that the polling looks better in the 5th, and it may be that King is just too much for those very conservative folks. For instance, the Dutch Reformed Church members up in the NW corner see Iraq as an immoral war in addition to being with King on issues like abortion. And farmers are having to use buses to bring in people to work, because immigrants won’t drive in certain counties. So immigration cuts both ways, even for conservative Republicans.
This is the guy the Republicans are putting up next.
And McShame wants to increase the DOD budget and reduce everything else
First time poster - please be gentle!
This might be slightly OT, but as a young (under-30) Democrat, this is the first election I’ve really started paying attention to. So turning on the news in the morning before work, I’ve become more and more disgusted by the lopsided, biased coverage of this whole election process! CNN (and Headline News) have been my morning company for the past few years working, but more and more of late I’ve seen them basically providing free advertising to McCain and his campaign, blathering on and on about his appearances on this show or in that town, his campaign advisors, his talking-head pundits. It had me flipping to CSPAN this morning, until I remembered there would be no DNC coverage this early.
My husband, normally a Repub himself though this time voting for Obama, said in the car this morning, “This is the first election where the coverage is good for Republicans - too bad this is the year I don’t want to watch it.”
Was it always this bad? Or, as he thinks, was the MSM in the Democratic pocket for so long that the shift to more Repub-centric coverage is more striking?
The thing I found the most helpful as I was teaching myself to use it, was discovering that you can do different things in different views, like splitting the video into multiple clips. So if you can’t figure out how to do something, try changing from the timeline into the clip view or vice versa. Also, the “project” that it shows you working on, or the “collections” of video that you imported, are not movies. Until you save as a movie it’s useless for playing on your computer or on line. These are things that I learned the hard way…
, the Larry Kings of the world host programs wondering why things like this could happen.
Can’t stand that fatuous little show. Sometimes I think it’s a tossup between that and Nancy Grace and hurling the teevee out the window.
G*d/ess I miss the sharpness of shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer that critique on point in code, to counterbalance, the banality and stupidity of the rest of everything on tv.
[snip]
And there’s a USA who doesn’t appear to have a single functioning brain cell either. :-(
If I had to make an educated guess, there’s probably an (R) after his name.
i wouldn’t place too much emphasis on looks … after all, the olymics/abortion clinic bomber cleaned up pretty well and he is as wingnutty as it gets.
my concern is the fluke traffic accident that caused this to even come to light. it makes me think twice about those who are equally wingnutty, but much more polished and financed in their potential attempts.
i just want our next president, and those surrounding him for protection, to remain ever vigilent.
itunkala
Nancy’s on CSpan and she’s not making any sense to me.
I believe it’s called “obsfucating” (sp), They asked her about accountability, and she’s giving us the SCHIP speech.
?????
Welcome to De-Lurkville !
is a gargantuan myth - perpetuated by right wing of your husband’s party - there’s lots of great material on it’s genesis and application everywhere - although Perlstein’s Before The Storm is a good start
as a lurker you have seen plenty of material here on why the Corporate Owned Media does what it does these days - no dfh worth her birkenstocks goes a day without reading MediaMatters - can’t go wrong reading David’s or Eric Boehlert’s stuff on it either . . .or digby, atrios, . . . :D
Everytime a new president is elected the USA’s customarily tender their resignations. The senior elected official in the state from the new presidents party reccommends a person to be nominated by the president. I believe that there are 99 districts in the US
thank you, thank you, thank you. I can tell from just reading what a “hard” lesson that one would be to learn
well here I go . . .my masterpiece is scheduled to drop the night of McKept’s acceptance speech
Mindless law enforcement statement.
Racist, neo-nazi, druggies. High-power weapons, scopes, ammunition, body armor….
Harmless as a pet hamster (US Attorney)!
InvaluableHarmless to the current regime, and people who think like us. The rest of you—not so much.Welcome!
The coverage has been going downhill for years; I think your husband is just starting to notice is all. Not sure where he thinks the Dems were getting soft coverage in earlier times given how badly they mocked both Gore and Kerry and how much the insiders showed their hate for the Clintons (buffoons from Arkansas was one of the more polite names).
When I was growing up, the Fairness Doctrine pretty much assured that both sides of an issue were represented. It also worked out that with the Fairness Doctrine, lies were not allowed to take root as easily.
But the coverage has definitely been going downhill since the late 80s.
IMNSVHO
Adelwolf, also, Eric Alterman’s “What Liberal Media?” is an insider view of how it works. Easy to read.
Lots of people told me I looked just like the Olympic Park bomber. People stopped me at concerts, my best friend’s mom, coworkers.
Oh, and Adelwolf, look at the video Christy had with RFK, Jr. yesterday on the Fairness Doctrine, or the loss of it.
The ink on my DFH membership card is still wet, but it made my stomach turn when I saw the CNN Election Center coverage sponsored by one of those clean-coal campaigns and AT&T.
AT&T!
Larry King (who I can’t stomach anyway) doing all GOP all the time this week, ostensibly to ‘balance’ the DNC coverage - even pre-coffee infusion, I instantly wondered, like David, whether he’d be doing the flipside during the RNC.
I’ll be back upstream, I bet — after I slot a few new entries into my feed-read.
Good Morning All.
I was all a-glow after Michelle Obama’s incredible speech last night.
Then I come here… and the tears start.
I will never recover from the John & Bobby Kennedy & MLKing horrors.
What does it take for an idiot like Larry King to wake up?!
I agree, RevBev #38. Sorry OFGuy; I know you mean no harm, but there’s nothing funny about it….
Start with the bleach and catch my breath.
Vow not to turn on CNN, all the NBC stationlets, as well as Fox.
Coult, Rusphht, and a host of other disgusting nits. OFF button may wear out, but they will not be viewed or listened to in this house.
You suppose it was just a simple accident that History channel was showing KKKhistory last night?
a pox on all of them, for they KNOW what they do.
Yer welcome. And once it’s a movie you have to import it back into the program to change it. Or work on the project that you saved before you turned it into a movie and save it as a new movie. It’s pretty exasperating.
OT: (But the topic seems to have drifted to media coverage) I wanted to give some credit to Chris Matthews last night. He had a run-in with a PUMAess and for the rest of the night kept talking about those “Wackos.” He was bolled over by Michelle Obama’s speech. He ended a Pat Buchanon spiel in which he mentioned that she made no comment on her religion, by pointedly saying that “this is not the Christian Democrats. There is no religeous test for President….” He deserved an attaboy last night.
Sorry. Here is a link to the run-in with the PUMA person.
a morbid question but I have to ask it;
after the convention, when the presidential candidate with his vp is selected, who takes the president’s place if he (for whatever reason) rescinds his candidacy?
does it go to the vp?
then the vp chooses his new vp?
I did a quick google to see if he happened to be one of those who replaced the recently fired USAs (y’know, the ones who actually had some integrity) but didn’t find anything.
O/t - some freakin’ twit on CNN claiming “john mccain has run a very clean campaign.”
Party Panic time
Thanks for that update. Chris can indeed act like a grownup when he wants to, and your report sounds good indeed.
I’ll watch him with guarded optimism.
But John McShame does not speak for his campaign and the people who do are absolute sleeze meisters under the tutelage of Karl Rove
New post upstairs…
BT upstairs
That’s sad and scary at the same time.
Did it look to anyone like that blond in the video was trying to emulate Coultergeist?
wow
Why aren’t those people on their way to MN?
virtual thank you note
- incredible pics
Yes they are. Thank you.
1,745 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen David Neiwert and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Thank you Brother Neiwert, may I have another…your work on the radical right and domestic terrorism is outstanding and needs to be catapulted into the living room media…maybe Rachel Maddow will give ya some sunshine on her new show.
It seems that we have gone long past a tipping point in our country’s politics. Violence is very much a part of our political history but until now our acceptable political vocabulary did not include exhortations to violence and our national institutions and media would recoil from expressions of political genocide. Then came Oklahoma City…the response to that act of domestic terror on the part of media and BOTH political parties was one of calculated understatement and careful tears but outrage?…Well not so much!
In my opinion we are now a fascist terror state. Our oligarchy holds power thru domestic terror and threats of terror and the use of domestic police to criminalize political speech. I’m afraid that the national institutions such as the FBI and the Department of Justice have been so corrupted that it will be impossible to change the dynamic of the terror police state as quickly as needs to be done without a series of national show trials of administration officials and exposure of the real mechanism behind the anthrax attacks.
I have no faith in those institutions such as the Secret Service or the FBI to keep our elected leadership safe…we have not seen the end of direct assaults on our candidates.
KEEP THE FAITH ANS PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE WAR IS NOW IN OUR LIVINGROOM!!!
i chose to watch CSPANs coverage last night, and enjoyed the lack of color commentary. it’s hard to turn it all off though … and it has become incredibly predictable.
p.s. Militias such as the Aryan Nation have been carefully cultivated and nurtured and now serve as the domestic shock troops, the Brown Shirts for the Republican Party…it’s time to call a spade a shovel - the Republican Party is fascist and the actions of this last administration define fascism.
The two suspects look as though they might be fans of Sean Hannity’s buddy Hal Turner who called for the assassination of Obama. I see Hal’s blog had the story up this morning but with no comments. He was the first guy I thought of when I heard the story.
Let the trials begin! Whether in Washington or the Hague the American people must be forced to see the crimes of this administration just as allied troops forced German citizens to walk through concentration camps to see the crimes of their government.
Not to mention the anti-immigration nut-jobs, such as Minutemen, etc.
Sorry I couldn’t hang in the thread, folks. I had to grab a ride into town shortly after posting …
They sound more like fall guys than a credible plot.
Well, isn’t it great that our National Surveillance State tools and techniques are in place so that wiretapping and warrantless peekaboo searches revealed this horrific plot before it reached its goals. Oh, what’s that you say? Good old police work identified a bad driver whose attitude caused the patrol officer’s antenna to go up, so that the car got search during a routine traffic stop?
Oh, well — I’m sure the surveillance state apparatus will come in handy sometime. As they say, you never hear about its successes! Yeah, right.
“No tangible threat”?
Apparently these guys wanted to find a high structure that would have given them a clear shot at Obama giving the acceptance speech, but the police blew it off by asserting that with the wind and distance it’s unlikely they would have hit Obama.
Probably just someone else up on the stage! Maybe another party leader, Senator, Congressperson, a wife or member of invited families.
“Not a tangible threat”?
And imagine the panic and chaos that would have ensued.
These guys were not making some hollow threat that one might expect by
a pissed-off venting idiot. These guys were bent on doing severe harm. They were planning to assassinate the Presidential candidate. To say that they were going to fail in that endeavour doesn’t mean this wasn’t a serious threat.
It would likely go back to the Central Committee and they would poll the Party Delegates. There is no set Constitutional procedure for selecting a candidate if the candidate dies or resigns after the convention. The VP is not automatically the Presidential “candidate”. The 25th Amendment only applies once the President is elected. In fact, under the 25th Amendment, it isn’t clear that the VP-in-waiting would take over until the swearing in occurs.
ASFAIK neither case has ever actually happened.
The FBI (Famous But Incompetent) says “just a bunch of crazies”. There’s no real danger.
In the meantime, doesn’t the Secret Service sort of keep an eye on the crazies, because they’re the ones who actually do this kind of stuff.
Maybe the FBI ought to ask the Secrect Service about what a viable threat really is.
After the UU Church attacker who specifically said, “I hate liberals” was arrested and they found books by Hannity, O’Reilly and Savage in his room I remember thinking that still won’t be enough for the right wing to understand just who is driving this hate and division for fun and profit.
I did a bunch of research on the FCC rules before I decided to go to the advertisers. I thought that the FCC actually cared about death threats over the broadcast airwaves. Turns out they really don’t. I even asked “our” commissioner about it (Copps) and he said that it would take a long time and hearing before congress before they did anything so that going to the advertisers was the right thing for me to do.
I kept thinking that surely it is not okay to target people for attack on the public airwaves, but in Bush’s America I guess it is. When there are actually attacks and people say, “Nobody could have anticipated…” we can say. “Well we did, but you didn’t think it mattered, so now we want you to make it unprofitable to call for people’s death.” (I say that because what really hurts these people is lack of profits, not some rule that they will block with lobbyists and an appeal to the people who misunderstand the 1st Amendment and think it applies to all venues. Note: I am not the government. I can object to corporate sponsored calls for death of someone and it is NOT protected by the First Amendment.)
