My mom – a lifelong Dem who is 77 – said to me that McCain “used to be a real person.” I’m not sure if that’s true, but at least in 1980 he was more of a happy warrior.

Since I didn’t hear the speech, either, it’s hard for me to judge, but it seems possible she was going for symbolism. As in “I’m on the campaign trail, and now it’s to support this guy”. If the speech didn’t match that message, it might not have made sense, but from this article that’s the impression I got.

Obama has had some problem attracting Clinton supporters. Tying an old visual symbol to a new purpose seems like a good idea.
