Morning BT.
Carville is an ass.
Can’t wait to hear more about Pach’s meeting with Billo.
Good morning Blue Texan! Michelle Obama’s speech was wonderful. I teared up throughout all of it. I especially loved near the end when she said Barack drove slowly home from the hospital while looking in the rear view mirror at Michelle & Malia Ann to make sure they were okay. How sweet! A good Daddy is the key to being a great leader. We no longer want the “I blew up frogs” & “I approve of my daughters talking about sex at the 2004 Republican National Convention” types in the White House!!!
Last night I got a breathless call from Eddie of Turn Maine Blue. He said there were 300 cops in riot gear and people were jumping over walls. He abruptly ended the call when he said he had to go before he got arrested. He must have witnessed this:

Eight years of authoritarian dictatorship in America is almost over! I can’t wait to say goodbye!
Yes, that crawdaddy Carville needs to go away, and stay there
Why does she drop the g in ing, and say min instead of men?
Carville would have prefered a public crucifiction of that traitor Gov. Bill Richardson over Michelle Obama
I’m sorry? That’s like asking me why I say, “cornah” instead of “corner” or “deeyah” instead of “dear”. LOL
Not sure where you’re going with your comment.
I lost my regional accent when I went to college. She went to Princeton. Why did she not lose hers? Does she think it makes her more authetic?
Kay -
? from downstairs: have you ever actually heard any of the content in the tapes bush 3.0 is supposed to have made when he was a pow? If they do exist, why haven’t they been aired by now…….or are they one of those things that have been “disappeared” or an urban legend? No offense intended but it’s one of those trust but verify thingies, please.
[edited by Moderator] If I won $50 million dollars tomorrow I wouldn’t start talking like a pompous asshole who looks down on everyone including their accents.
Michelle Obama is who she is and if you can’t handle it vote for the old wrinkly guy who will work hard against you to make sure you’re wearing a burka before long. And he’ll be fine with your accent no matter what school you attended!
Okay, going to work pissed off now. LOL
[Mod Note; Please do not insult other commenters. Thank you.]
Oh yes, when the POW guy says these tapes don’t exist we must believe him. Besides, he has 10 houses, has a nice accent that some can enjoy, and he has all of it because he’s a POW!
You believe what you want and I’ll believe what the rest of the country remembers when Johnny was reporting live from Vietnam. Okay?
Interesting that asking Qs makes one an asshole.
I’m about 2 decades older than the Obamas, and everyone in my generation knew that regional accents impeded advancement. Just wondering if times have changed and in the 40 somethings, retaining regional accents is considered attractive.
Besides, if you changed your accent when you went to college then that means you are one who cares about what others think of you. You wanted to fit in so badly you decided to start talking differently. If I’m not mistaken, that is a sign of insecurity. No way in hell would I change myself to fit in! No way.
You look down on people here a lot at FDL. It’s not just Michelle Obama. This is YOUR problem. Not mine.
totally
OT
but I HATE GWB
cspan–mccain at central high school in phoenix, with latino rapper who endorsed him-but they haven’t shown him on camera…can’t narrow it down to just one punchline.
principal gave him #1 jersey and ‘72 jersey, the year cindylou graduated from there……..hmmmmmmm, he’s 17 years older than her?
can’t narrow it down to just one.
There’s no accent quite like the one Bush adopted in order to pretend to be a Texan. It’s curious that he’s the only one in that talks that way.
bring on the rapper
‘daddy yankee’
he got more applause and screams from the crowd.
wassup? hugs and squeals…….
mccain not so smart…
showing what a fogie he is.
grinning like he peed his britches.
ruprect–
You’ll certainly not like talking to me. I’m a college grad and I talk just like Michelle.
What American accent do you have?
Didn’t say anything about liking or not liking. Just inquiring why. Can you ’splain it to me?
A regional accent does not seem to have impeded Teddy Kennedy’s advancement. Or George Bush’s, for that matter (of course, neither did his intellect, but that is a different matter).
i don’t see anything offensive in what ecahn was asking.
what she said is true of her generation.
when i moved here, the first thing my uncle asked me about about was the local vernacular. he wasn’t looking down on anyone, just wondered about it.
it exists. and yes, where i worked people were held back for promotion because of it.
valid curiosity question i think.
Those of us from Ireland think you all speak rather strangely.
That’s pretty funny. I grew up in the mountains of NC, and it says I have a “midland” accent, or no accent. “You probably are from the midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois and Missouri)”
Very few of us are Ted Kennedys or George Bushes. For the many whose parents are not prominent, but who wanted to be upwardly mobile (guilty as charged, but I thought that was the American dream) losing regional accents was part of the package. Wondering if that’s a generational thing.
People ask me why I left here, there’s one of em right there.
I was afraid you might be offended and did not intend that to happen. Have just never heard anyone ask mccain about the tapes so have no way of knowing what his response might have been. It isn’t that I don’t think he’s not perfectly capable of having made such tapes. I was alive and kicking back in those days but unfortunately not paying attention in the depth many at the Lake were.
Are the Dems trying to give the Presidency to McSame?
Monday was a complete waste of time. This isn’t Oprah, it’s a Presidential campaign. Really, who cares about Michelle Obama?!?!
Wednesday is “security” day which should be just as useless.
More action and worthwhile news outside the convention center than inside.
Well, atleast AT&T is happy.
Whereabouts in the mountains?
“Whereabouts” = one of them regional thingies. *g*
That and insecurity about your own being.
that was fun. My result:
Your Result: The Midland
“You have a Midland accent” is just another way of saying “you don’t have an accent.” You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.
To pick a nit:
Obviously, *someone* has never been to southern Indiana, where there is a thick Southern accent.
Want to thank you all for the free psychoanalysis. Coffee’s been consumed so I’m off.
I’ll be 65 in November. When I was growing up I was told that in order to make it in the big world I had to lose my syrupy Virginia/South Carolina accent. I did lose it over the years, mainly by being out of the south, joining the Navy and traveling around the world, which shows in the way I spell and pronounce some words. Twenty-five years ago it would have been impossible for anyone to guess where I was from. When I moved back to the south I picked up a southern accent again, not that syrupy Virginia accent but almost. Had I decided to live in New York City I would imagine I’d sound like them. Shelby Foot, author of “The Civil War” had a beautiful southern accent. A lot of it depends on who one associates with. I know New Yorkers here who have been here 20 years but sound like they got here yesterday, primarily because they hang out with other New Yorkers. Plus times are changing. I listen to what folks say, not how they say it. I’m not the same person I was yesterday, much less 50 years ago.
Mornin’ Firedogs,
“creepier” indeed Blue Texan – and they foiled it with a traffic stop shudder
and Carville was merely following the Beard’s theme set earlier when he asked Gergin if the Dems had “squandered” Monday night – he asked right after Pelosi’s speech
switch to CSpan period
Yup, we don’ speak English, we speak American.
Thank God very few of us are Geroge Bushes! There may be a generational aspect to it, but I think a lot of it depends on the field of work, and where you work. In my career (engineering), there are quite a few upper level people with somewhat heavy southern accents (of course, I am in the south). It also depends on how you were raised – both in how you react to others with an accent and how you feel about your own accent.
Gergen although Gherkin would be more appropriate for these pickleheads
Grew up in Boone – very familiar with “whereabouts.”
It was the “people magazine” evening. Designed for the mildly curious masses and not the hard core movers and shakers. Just like sporting events for middle america where, it seems, the six packers are dying to know all about the previous three generations of a goal scorer and not about the brilliant pass to assist the goal. Dumbing down of America is what I believe it is called.
I don’t know if the tapes exist but I do know some former Air Force fighter pilots regard McCain as a traitor.
Damn colonist!
Mornin’ BT and Everyone…
McSame snags key celebrity endorsements — Pat Boone and Lorenzo Lamas.
Oh noes…we’re in trouble now. I’m shaking. (with laughter.)
It’s really interesting how many of us at the Lake seem to be in that same age range (at least, based on comments). Do you get that same impression as well?
Wilford Brimley is the perfect McLame endorser
LOL. Yep, still drinkin’ tea grown in China in protest, too.
Your AP at work in Michigan…local TeeVee stations report that Ted Kennedy only appeared on video tape at convention.
Neat to grow up in a college town……guess it was much more a *town* when you were a youngster than it is now. Native born meself but have lived in the SW corner of the state for many years….and love what’s left of the regional accent!
Well, but I liked him in Cocoon.
Yes, but I appreciate the younger commenters like wooblybits and cassie very much. Love the new ideas and energy of the young ones.
Pat Boone and Lorenzo Lamas.
Oh noes…we’re in trouble now. I’m shaking. (with laughter.)
Washed-up-Hollywood for McSame!!
And, no Gallo wine for me either. Some habits die hard, right you old hippie? :)

Yep. I grew up in Kentucky but have lived all over the country. It’s as much a defense mechanism as anything but you do tend to pick up and sound like the prevailing accent for the area in which you live. I’m pretty much at the point where folks will say “You’re not from around here?” but with a question as they’re just not sure.
It was really nice. It is much larger now. The population of ASU now is greater than the entire town when I grew up. The developers have taken over in the past several years. Not the same.
America has been dumbed down but 4 years ago Kerry allowed himself to be defined by the rovians and Obama is currently combatting that. Unfortunately a lot of dummies go to the polls on election day.
Ya got that right, ma’am. Damn proud to be an old hippie.
Energy doesn’t seem to be missing among the “elders” either. *g*
People still can’t figure out where I’m originally from but there’s no doubt I’m a southern boy.
Singular – y’all
Plural – all y’all
Not here, that’s for sure. At work I have to listen to their aches, pains and surgery stories. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
janehamsher: DNCC says it was all a mistake, some security guard didn’t know what passes meant. #DNC08 # 10 mins ago
True of the whole bloody state! They’re (developers) are flooding the SW *and* SE corners as well…and not for the better. Oh well, at least one thing about being older is that I can remember it the way it was. :-(
They gotta quit hiring Rethugs for security.
Howard Dean up next on JoeScar….
LORENZO LAMAS???!!!!!!! Folks, it just doesn’t get any cheezier.
People in FL are beginning to fight back (about goddamn time) against the developers. Taxes and water issues forced it.

Many thanks for the twitter updates.
They’re tearing into the sides of the beautiful mountains that surround the town to put up condos. Now, they have to worry about mudslides taking out Wal-Mart (not that that would be a bad thing).
One can only hope.
Good on the people fighting back! Forkin’ developers and their forkin’ golf courses that suck water…..a pox on them all!
When I was a kid the US population was 160M It is now 300M any wonder it seems a little more crowded
Next they’ll dig up Nixon.
I’m (only) 56, but still consider myself an old hippie. There are some great advantages, like sandles, no bras (for the most part, I mean) and not having to shave my legs. Ha ha.
A maverick and a renegade doesnt get any more appropriate does it
Will some kind soul tell me where I can find these twitters?
Primary today. My gut feeling is we’ll win but sure doesn’t take the edge off. This is worse than the general last time, when we figured we didn’t have much of a chance. Where’s my pipe.
Stupid! stupid, they are! Same thing happening in Jackson County with mucking up the terrain and, hence, streams…….tho’ I’d pay good money to see a slide take out a walfart.
Yeah, being a Southron boy myownself, I can play the role. When I was living and working outside of Boston on some DoD things and a few other southerners were around, we’d play the game and make the accent that much stronger just to mess with people.
But when thinking about it, I would play down the accent as well just because it was easier.
On the front page, down by where the news box was.

When you lived in Boston did you have a cah to drive to the pahty in?
Thank you kind souls. (((SD & Ellie))
Sometimes I forget to go there.
Well you soon will have the incredible joy of dealing with Medicare and the sop to the pharma industry known as Part D. (I just got off the phone with a dipshit from a Part D company and now need an early bottle of Jack). I am so glad that I can escape the clutches of the insurance industry if I get seriously ill and feel sorry for those stuck in this country. Thank goodness for my Irish passport!!!!!
Huh?
you don’t know what jinx is?
here’s the wiki
‘Cause you both told me where to find the twitter – as in, jinx, you owe me a [coke].
I have to figure out how it all fits in with the VA. I’m not service connected (too proud to go after a PTSD disability) but at 65 I become eligible like I was. Unless they’ve changed those rules too. Always been healthy so haven’t had to live those health care nightmares.
I do now. Thanks.
I thought I had jinxed the campaign somehow. All that weird voodoo stuff.
I’ll take the Crypt Keeper over Nixon any day.
Navigating the health care quagmire is going to be one of the next growth industries.

Ahem…a DFH of mid-forties here…
Carville was exactly right. But I forgot, we’re all just supposed to keep drinking the Kool-Aid and cheer.
I think the convention will get better, but this was an awful beginning. Though Michelle’s speech was pretty good, “Don’t be afraid of the candidate” is pretty weak tea as an opening night theme.
Any chance you could share which station(s) said that? Have avoided my own local television stations here in my part of Michigan for weeks now.
We are in trouble now. McThusula is giving his “Onion Belt” speech.
Carville can kiss my ass. Son of a bitch has accomplished nothing except help get Clinton elected. He and Matalin are two sides of the same coin. They’ve both gotten rich playing this game.
If the convention had started out with fire and brimstone where would it have gone from there?
And it may be weak tea to you, but there is a huge swath of voters — so-called Dems — who still believe the crap that’s been spread for years now about Obama since he first ran for public office in Chicago.
When the unions here in Michigan have to send out literature that explains to their members, “Obama is not a Muslim,” there has to be some effort expended on affirming the Obama brand as belonging to middleclass Americans (read: white Reagan Democrats).
Pisses me off personally that we have to do this, being the child of a Hawaiian-Asian father and a Caucasian mother, both American citizens born in the U.S., but there’s absolutely no avoiding it. Carville can kiss my ass because he’s done gawddamned little to help this situation for the last two decades.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool, y’all.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
So your father was from an “exotic foreign land” :)
The problem isn’t “so-called Dems.” That’s just flat out wrong. The problem is we have a candidate who wants everyone to like him and is afraid — so far — to have sharp elbows. He wants everyone to like him, and that is bass-ackwards in this campaign. His key issue should be “it doesn’t matter who I am insofar as I am NOT a Republican who will continue the disastrously unpopular course that we’re on. Instead, he’s trying to “reach out” to them. Fail. Picking Biden is a step in the right direction on this front, but the first night was squandered.
Where does the convention go if it opens with fire and brimstone? I have two reactions to that: 1) Anywhere it wants to go — the theme of “McCain is bad and more of the current assholery that no one wants” is established as the foundation of the convention; and 2) who said anything about “fire and brimstone?” I guess it’s too much to ask for the Dems to, you know, come out with at least a few jabs, if not a haymaker.
The anger at Carville is misplaced. Shoot the messenger much?
We all have our ideas about how the campaign and convention should be won. We’ll just have to wait and see how it all works out, won’t we?
Carville is a scumbag. Always was, always will be.
edit –
wonruni don’t see anything offensive in what ecahn was asking.
Then you were not paying attention. Here is what was said…
Why did she not lose hers [accent]? Does she think it makes her more authetic?
The latter question is implying that Michelle might be faking it to manipulate the people to whom she is speaking. If someone suggested that I was doing this, I would be offended.
and here is me thinking, y’all is plural for you.
I’m with nomolos – colonists! I was one and got remedied ;-)
Where can I hire a speech teripist?
Carville was exactly right. […] “Don’t be afraid of the candidate” is pretty weak tea as an opening night theme.
If all you heard last night was “Don’t be afraid of the candidate”, then all I can say is that you must be afraid of the candidate. Is it his policies or skin color that frighten you?
What I heard throughout the evening was that Obama is a man who came from humble beginnings, earned everything he has by way of hard work and determination, is as down to earth as anyone I’ve ever known, and will be an excellent president for all of these reasons.
Californian. It’s known as “newscaster’s English,” which I no longer consider a compliment.
Snakes! Now that McSame has tied up that all-important Wilford Brimley endorsement, let’s see Wilford do some ads! Speak at the RNC! Oh, please!
