Dan Rather gave a talk today at the Big Tent, and it was an impressive and genuinely important one. When the video is available I’ll put it up here so you can watch the entire thing.
Much of it was a critique of modern mainstream media, as well as the business of conventions. This in particular stood out for me:
I’m sure the broadcast and cable-news outlets will do a couple of short pieces here and there about how the real story of these conventions is the vast sums of money being raised at private parties all around town. But aside from, in most cases, simply mentioning this fact, they don’t follow up on just what that money is going to do to our political system now.
As one reporter, I think the best story here is who gives the big money to whom, expecting to get what. Now maybe the coverage does not for the most part center on this, because the larger news organizations — of which I was part for a long time, it’s important for you to understand that I do not except myself from the criticism inherent in some of the things I’m going to say today — it may be, in terms of the larger news organizations, that they don’t cover stories such as who gives the big money, to whom, expecting to get what, because after all they are part of the system. The money raised by the parties and the campaigns for advertising doesn’t go to charity.
And that’s why I’m glad to see all of you here today. Those of you in the new media are afforded a great opportunity to tell the story straight with no chaser. Because your bottom line is not tied to the status quo in ways you won’t see with those running the evening news. I hope you take advantage of the freedom this gives you to report news that is worthy of the name.
There is nothing more important, more vital, to the democratic process than an independent — a truly independent press.
Dang, you’d think the guy was reading Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald or something.

Or…reading you too.
I’ll take one straight, please. That’s neat, huh?
Go, Dan, Go!
And, how’s that lawsuit coming along, Dan?
Bob in HI
Not 5 pm here yet. Darn!
Bet the MSM would rather forget Rather.
ooo! Looking forward to that video.
just might be!
Or you’d think he’s a good, conscientious American concerned with the health and well-being of our political system. Good on him and good on you guys for doing what the former fourth estate used to do, should be doing, but hasn’t been doing to their shame for years.
wow. awesome.
I’m with the others, I can’t wait to see the video
It’s going to go to trial sometime in February or March, if it survives.
They are more like the fifth column
Mitt Romney at the convention and being interviewed by Matthews. Is this unprecidented? Can you imagine Joe going to the R’s?
I wish Dan Rather and Mike Wallace would start a blog. Now that would be a ’fun’ blog to read.
Just to demonstrate the pertinence of what Dan Rather says, I’m re-posting from a comment I made months ago that had to do with the Keating scandal and McSame, et al.
Gov David Paterson ROCKS!!!!!!!
What did he say?
yep. he is attacking mccain quite nicely
You know what would be fun? If you are a blogger in Denver go over to one of the journalists who is covering the convention and COVER THEM! Go bug them like a 10 year old.
“Hey what cha doing?
What is your story going to be about?
How do you know that there is a split between Hillary and Obama?
Why do you think that it is unusual for a second place person’s name to be put into the nomination?
Is that different from the past? No? Then why is this different now?
Did you talk to someone who said that? Who? Why won’t you tell me who? Why do they get to be “a nonnie mouse”?
I thought it was bloggers who just make stuff up based on no sources? Why are you doing it?
Could you please smile? I’m putting this up in a videocast with all your answers to my questions. What do you mean this wasn’t on the record? I thought when people talked to the press they were supposed to always be “on the record” I assume I’m on the record when I talk to you. Who are you, Tim Russert, where everything is OFF the record until you say it is ON the record?”
Now THAT would be fun.
one of his lines was (paraphrased)
..instead of giving them 4 more years, let’s give them only 4 months. Vote Barack Obama
Oops! The following quote:
was supposed to read:
Or you’d think he’s a good, conscientious American concerned with the health and well-being of our political system. Good on him and good on you guys for doing what the former fourth estate used to do, should be doing, but hasn’t been doing to their shame for years.
Makes more sense now?
Yes, what did our governor say?
According to The Hill, it’s tough to be a lobbyist in Denver this week. All those pesky ethics rules to follow, and the fact that the word “lobbyist” is becoming a dirty word:
If you’re going to retreat behind closed doors and velvet ropes, you can’t exactly complain about being shunned. Indeed, if you’d step out into the open, all kinds of folks might like to talk with you.
Like Glenn and Jane, for instance.
*g*
which Joe?
He talked about being blind and still being able to be a Gov (only in America, Barak will open up the dream for more folks), nailed McCain a couple really nice ones, (one oops, got names mixed up once). Great to see him on the stage.
Joe Biden.
(I should have specified.)
Oh, JoeLie will be there, right?
Oh my yes. DoG forbid that everything actually BE above board, just so long as it’s PERCEIVED to be above board.
Thanks! Wish it was happening sooner!

Now they are just rocking out to Boogie, Boogie and just having a blast..
I wasn’t there this year, but get my credentials and I’ll promise to do that in 2012.
I am sure they are long time democrats and next week is a long time from now so when they are at the rethug convention they will be long time rethugs
BidenBitem. (You heard it hear first.)It should be get me credentials.
*g*
I like it!
you can almost see Rather’s increasing comfort with new media – recall Jane’s interview with him at SXSW 07 where he spoke of blogs as some abstract entities in a galaxy far, far away – he himself wasn’t even sure of their role just yet
ironic as shit that Charles Johnson is there scared out of his little lizard mind by the dfh’s and Rather is embracing them :D
Whoever made the suggestion to watch the convention on CSPAN
THANK YOU
yC-Span has no Buchanan filter. The one that filters all the color from the picture.

I think Rather perhaps sees the bloggers as the reporters they people like him USED to be.
Exactly Dan! We bloggers aren’t being hounded by lobbyists and the Big Corps, so we’re reporting what the media cannot/will not/refuse to, because we can.
I have a question about a post from earlier that I was unable to join. That was the one with Laura Flanders taking about the Minneapolis police confiscating laptop computers and video equipment. How can that be legal? Where’s the probable cause?
Rather is one of the “examples” that the MSM uses to keep todays stenographers in line.
I don’t have cable so I’m stuck with Lehrer, Brooks and Shields (these two couldn’t sing a lick) on PBS. I’ve got a system, though. Look to see who’s approaching the podium, mute off if I want to hear the speaker, mute on after speech. Works great. Plus I get some reading done. Being under the poverty level has its advantages.
Yes, C-Span is the best way. I was watching on MSNBC last night for a while, but they don’t show the freeking convention. It’s all talking heads. And when they say that no one’s going negative on McCain I want to ask if they’ve actually watched the speakers.
BTW, Dennis Kucinich is scheduled for 6:30. Do you think they’ll show him on MSNBC, CNN and Fox?
Minneapolis has an ordinance for their convention. Spines prohibited
Anyone need a hankie?
Leahy up now…
Those questions are SO pre-FISA ‘08
Today, I have spent an inordinate amount of time reading the political blogs in order to grasp the various perspectives relative to the DNC Convention. And for this, my Kudos go out to all these to these political blogs including Digby.
And being that I am from the Sonoran Desert, I am familiar with the self-censorship that is imposed by the local editorial writers and the able columnists of our local newspaper. To wit, I found it in great humor when a pundit suggested that Hispanic Women should hold their nose and still vote for Barack Obama. As such, this behavior is unnecessary and unwholesome to say the least. Of course, the pundit was suggesting that the Hillarylandia acolytes should “get over themselves”.
Several weeks ago, Charles Black from the McCain Camp suggested that 77% of Hispanics in Arizona voted for McCain during his successful re-election effort. Quite true of course, but Black did not deem it necessary as to why this behavior occurred. And that’s a story for another time.
However, a couple of weeks ago, a reputable public opinion, although normally or historically skewed to the Republican view, demonstrated that 79% of Hispanics were expected to vote for Barack Obama. Sadly, self-censorship imposed itself on our news media outlets, and neither the newspaper nor the electronic media, publicized this public opinion poll. In past instances, ‘anything’ that advantaged the McCain Camp relative to public opinion polls, was much ballyhooed.
Here in Arizona, times are now tough for the McCain Camp since the Hispanic vote will continue trending upward for Obama and even possibly achieve an unheard level of 90%. And the African Americans and Native Americans continue to support the usual Democratic nominee at the phenomenal rate of 90%.
Thusly, should the voters in the Democratic column come together, Barack Obama will win and by a large margin. And if Obama loses, it won’t be because of the Hispanic Women in America.
Just a Random Thought from ChicanoLandia.

Leahy is on
oops, that reply was for Solai @41. Leahy up on CSpan1 now.
The Constitution notwithstanding?!!
at least it guarantees no Faux news so it isn’t all bad *g*
What is that
What? That ol’ piece of paper? /s
That’s actually very revealing language.
We live in a land of laws – bushco law
My 14 year old son just returned from 10 days in DC. He brought little gifts for us. For himself, he bought replica copies of the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution. They are up on his wall.
I was reading the preamble to The Constitution out loud and got all choked up.
BushCo rules.
take it either way.
On a personal level, being shunned “is hard to take,” one lobbyist told The Hill.
it’s hard out there for a pimp.
THIS is good. Very good.
How long will it be before you start getting election results from Florida?
egregious upstairs
Indeed, it is! :-)
Lakoff, Lamont, and egregious misconduct in the new post.
Polls are open for another 20 minutes. Fed the tigers an hour early so I’ll head out to the campaign meet-up about 8. The local rag’s site says Pinellas has been slow all day. I was #49 just after noon. Lot of people use absentee ballots and the county is really pushing them. Besides the results I’m looking at the turnout numbers. Cafe Bohemia in St Pete is a great little place. SPFP has put on politically oriented flix there every Wed night for a couple years. We also use those Wed’s as a meet up for the south county folks. All of FL is using the new optical scan paper ballots for the first time. Pretty cool and the workers are definitely trained. Like an assembly line. Nervous as a Rethug giving a deposition (h/t to cbl, iirc).

Keeping my fingers crossed for all y’all! *g*
