There’s nothing unusual about this event — other than that it was more forcibly private than most and just a tad more brazenly sleazy. The democracy-themed stagecraft inside the Convention is for public television consumption, but secret little events of this sort are why people are really here. Just as is true in Washington, this is where — and how and by whom — the business of our Government is conducted.
The stuff in front of the cameras is kabuki. The video above, which includes the Denver Police using their badges on behalf of the lobbyist cabal to keep us away from their guests, is really your government in action.

How to get into the next Party
Glenn, Jane and Amy:
I’ve been on the other side of this “press can’t get into the party” game, or the “it’s private property”. game.
* If you can’t get in do the next best thing, expose the people who are keeping you out. (See tactics below)
* Get a guest list (with photos) or find someone who knows what the guests look like and then call out their names as they go into the party. “Congressman Blank of Texas! Why are you afraid to talk to the press?”
The goal isn’t to get them to talk to you, but to show their face while they are going into the brothel (er I mean event). Show their embarrassment about it and their fear of talking to the media. Did someone ACTUALLY cover their head with a jacket? Wow. That is what people do when they have been accused of a crime and are coming out of a courtroom. Not a good image for their progressive competition to have. Send this photo to the local press and the progressive competitor in their city.
Tactics to get to the “No Press” decider.
When the private security guy says you can’t come in ask,
At that point they will call over level one supervisor. When they arrive do the same with names, spelling and company then say,
At this point you should get a PR person or a party planner.
Keep pushing the “Who made this decision ABOVE you?” question. Keep getting names and spelling and who they work for who made the decision. If this sounds a little like Roger and Me that is correct, and if you remember that movie you will see just how poorly most companies handle this request for them to explain their policies to deal with the media. Those images make the brand look bad, and they HATE that. As you move up the decision chain you might get someone who figures out that it is not good PR to hide from the press. “I don’t understand why you are embarrassed to let credentialed press in?”
Also, when you get to the party planner or PR person you can ask to get a list of who is attending. They will decline. Ask if you can confirm the attendance of people that you spotted outside. If they are going to treat the event like an illegal activity then you need to treat your investigation like a prosecutor.
And finally, even if you don’t get any further than you did this time, you will have gathered names and footage that can be used in the future by progressives who are running against them.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what channel might have the least repellent convention coverage? I’m on PBS now, but they’re threatening me with Bobo…

He voted for the final bill so I’m very pissed off at him anyway. The day these folks have to meet in the men’s room of the Minneapolis Airport to pass their money is something we should work toward.
I missed it again. But I saw Maher say that people are getting stupider and stupider. He said they think drilling offshore will lower the price of gas and that this black man raised by a single mom is somehow an elitist.

Just for the record, I was formerly a Clinton supporter and I will proudly vote for our candidate Barack Obama. This election is just too important not to lose by partisan squabbling. Clinton supporters get over it! Hillary will still be around in the senate doing very important work for the cause and the party. Biden was actually my favorite candidate at the beginning of all this, so I am now even more thrilled to support this ticket.

I had the honor and treat to attend a tribute to him at the 04 DNC in Boston at Symphony Hall. My best friend works for YoYo Ma and I got to sit with them at the concert.
Teddy got to conduct Stars and Stripes Forever. It was magnificent. He actually looked like he knew what he was doing. I’m remembering every bit of it as I type this.

I’m watching PBS, after the speech, Shields, Brooks, and Lehrer all appeared to be misty eyed.
He can’t leave the state for fear the Democrats here will manage to pass a budget and get the Democratic Lt Governor to sign it. Not likely, but just possible enough that he can’t leave. May not be able to leave Sacramento to go to St Paul either.

Oh-h-h yes. I come from a “rock-ribbed Republican” family myself, lived in a Republican neighborhood, worked at Republican campaign hq sutffing envelopes for a friend’s mother, a R committeewoman in Indpls.
So few Dems in my neighborhood, I can remember the one and only Democrat (kid-I was ten in 1960) I knew.
We used to debate Kennedy-Nixon walking home from school.

I think he was addressing Jane. He didn’t sound sarcastic, so I assume it is a genuine compliment and not an attempt at a put down.

Oh I finally spotted your link to a prior post on this party. My questions were answered (I need a new set of eyes and a new computer. Colors are harder to discern lately on my screen).
Well, vendors often host events for different professions at different conventions. Something makes me think the banality and acceptance by partygoers is all too real. I sometimes wonder if people are stupid and greedy, lack circumspection and see only perks here and there. There’s also a sense of self-importance that big companies are so good at giving people. I think this is a big problem in a lot of professions, but totally appalling when perks>legislation that benefits only corps. Or leads to unholy alliances, eg. Pfizer/Yale Med School.
Anyway good work guys. I think Jane’s style is best e.g. less confrontational, more pulling someone into the conversation, before the interviewee know they know what they’re saying. I had a journalist do that to me in a bar once. Work that voodoo!
“Conservative Democrats”, huh? Are they the Christian-right that took over the Repugs party in order to overthrow R v Wade? They are pissed off because the R’s rode into Washington on their backs, and didn’t follow through with the promises. Is this the plan now? To take over the Democratic party?
I keep hearing about “crunchy cons” around my town. The christian right wingers that want to go organic, listen to christian rock music and wear sandals because Jesus did. They don’t like the war and the stigma of it attached to the Repug brand. I think they want to sneak in the back door of the Dem party, and transform IT to their agenda.
