And it hits McCain hard on the economy — and all those many, many votes with George Bush.
Right now, regular folks — to the tune of more than 70% — think the economy sucks and are worried about their future. Meanwhile, John McCain can’t remember how many luxury homes he has.
We cannot afford four more years of rampant Bush cronyism for the entitled few.
Not surprisingly, the business reportage has been pretty pro-McCain in its slant, but that can’t hide the fact that McCain is getting his rear end kicked on the economy — the latest Gallop poll has Obama at 52 percent on the economy, with McCain bringing up the rear at 40 percent.
Which may explain the weird pep rally from this morning — reminiscent of the creepy lime green jello and cottage cheese throw together basement kegger. The girlies who formed the staged "rally" backdrop were thrilled about the raggaeton singer McCain had in tow, while the staged teenyboppers looked bored to tears by McCain himself. Pretty much like the rest of the country, I suppose. Sad when you have to bring along your own traveling circus to get attention, but there you go.
I have been waiting for an ad like this from the Obama campaign for weeks — and this one really delivers. Watch and see what you think…

Really good ad!
I saw this earlier and think it’s great….you’re right, it works with sound on or sound off. Will this be appearing on TV? Mainstream TV?
McCainstream Media busily playing Democratic woman for McCain ad.
Will hold my breath waiting for this one to appear.
Tie Dubya around McCain’s neck with a good, tight knot.
Excellent ad!
Well usually one has to PAY to run ads- so it will run when Obama buys air time for it.
(Maybe I misunderstood your point).
I like the ad!
Meanwhile, what we all can do…share with our friends via email.
McCainstream Media will catch up…tomorrow…or next week, maybe….
Meanwhile, we’re seein’ tons o’Republican concern trolls on the teevee. Much talk of division-division.
So I look forward to all the Dems I’ll see during the Republican convention. And the equal coverage of Ron Paul’s [bigger?] event cross-town in the Twin Cities.
Actually, I think the Republicans have shown that, IYAAR, all you have to do is deliver it to the cablenets doors and they put it right into the free cue…complete with pundits.
That’s a GREAT ad
And short enough that they can afford to run it quite OFTEN!
Loves it!
Especially the tune and using the snuggle bunnies pic!
Oh, that’s going to leave a mark.
But I think the music is what makes the ad stand out. Without the music, it’s “just another” campaign spot.
That’s going to be the trick between now and November — keeping the ads creative enough, fresh enough, and hard-hitting enough to be memorable. Without that, they won’t be effective.
Hey all — the power is out at my table in the Big Tent, and by laptop battery is dying. Am going to pack up shortly and head over to the convention center and search for a charge.
loved it !
and like how the campaign changes the pace (although Halperin/Allen are in a dither)with a softer, clever ad
ps – the “houses” meme is playing well in God’s Country
Oh yay — some nice person restarted our power, so I can charge up for a few minutes while I wait for Marcy to scare up her convention center pass as well. So, how is everyone? Personally, I could use more coffee…but when is that not the case? *g*
Or you could go find Rahm Emanuel, hand him the battery, and say “Howie Klein said to ask you about Al Wynn.”
That ought to get a big charge out of Rahm.
Hey
There’s supposed to be POWER in a BIG TENT…
If you know any woman who is considering voting for McCain because she was a Clinton supporter, send her this [How do We Beat the Bitch?] so she’ll know the company she will keep.
well, thank goodness; that’s reassuring. the “dean” approves:
Hi Christy! So glad you guys are there. ;->
It is kinda funny. The self-confessed big-wigs all were pretty much startled into making all kinds of congratulatory hiccups before they pushed their reset buttons. heh.
Hopefully there will be a constant barrage of ads like this. Regular folks (who might wear a tennis shoe or an occasional python boot) should not be tricked into or scared into voting for Republics.
I am so relieved. I was just frantic that Broder would not think Obama’s choice was a good one s/
Speaking of pleasing visuals, I gotta say, I don’t mind seeing Matt Damon’s mug on my blog all day.
We actually have some really great progressive ad campaigns running this week. Please support FDL by checking them out!
Well, I’m happy to stand corrected — this spot just aired by Norah O’Donnell with Nicole Wallace gamely trying to counter McCain’s huggy bear ties to Bush. Tho Nicole needs to be careful, if she keeps talking about the RNC convention in Minneapolis, a whole lotta delegates are going to find themselves at the Ron Paul Convention.
Standin’ up for St. Paul….
There was a rumor on my local NPR station today that Illinois Gov. Ron Blagojevich might name Rahm Emanuel protege Tammy Duckworth to fill Obama’s Senate seat if he wins the election.
separated at birth?
Broder, Wallace of Wallace and Grommit
Is the singer James Taylor hisownself?
My only complaint about Jane’s last Twitter is that I can’t comment to it, so I must say something here:
So, why is there something wrong with Michelle Obama being like…Michelle Obama? Why must she be like Laura or Pat or Bess or, heaven forbid, Hillary? Just askin’…
Sorry Christy…obviously, I need an afternoon cuppa!
Fantastic!
Hey, David Brooks liked it too. With friends like these . . .
You can Digg this post at the Digg button at the top of the page. Sorry, I can’t give you a link, because I am on someone else’s computer…
Greetings from Colorado
hahahahaha!
The very “best” ads get run endlessly on television by news shows commenting on their audicity, their unfairness, or their lies.
SBVFT, in 2000, spent less than 100,000 on paid airtime, and those lies about Kerry ran everywhere!
Swell! Just fucking Swell! Yet another blue dog.
Not just Broederella. Bobo hisownself was saying on Friday how wonderful it would be if Obama chose Biden.
she’s a Blue Dog?
‘zup Berkeley !
I posted something on that about 2 minutes before the big announcement – after watching the breathless bobblehead speculation for almost an hour on saturday night – it dawned on this hippy the Village would love it – he is ‘one of them’ after all – and thought Biden, along with all the CW says he’s supposed to bring, would bring inoculation or at least a cushioning from the cocktail weenie crowd – hell I prolly coulda written the Dean’s post m’self he’s so friggin’ predictable
y’all can remind me later when proven dead wrong, but I think this will serve Obama long after November
As long as that knot is made, as Molly Ivins suggested, of wire.
It would probably be best for Obama to spend some of his stash on running this ad rather than depending on free plays on hardballs to get the message accross…
Studies show that only five people watch hardballs- but they are VERY regular.
soundalike
2004, duh
FWIW, the Right will do everything in their power to paint Michelle Obama as the second coming of Hillary.
They have an absolute fear of strong, intelligent, accomplished women who actually are capable of doing things outside of their husband’s shadow.
And they will be attacking Jill Biden as well for the same reasons.
ahhhhhh life is good :)
One of our dem friends says that she can’t vote for Obama cause she doesn’t think that Michelle could be a good First Lady.
One hardly knows how to respond to her.
SCOTUS
Ah yes- and Hillary too. They could spend eternity arguing with one another about obscure legal issues.
Fantastic ad
I would also like to see one w/ Ahnold talking about “economic girly men” and Graham talking about whiners
Looks like this shit is starting (it is August, after all):
Swift-Boat Group Sinks Nearly $3 Million Into Ad Tying Obama To Ayers
I know. It just ticks me off. It ticked me off when Hillary was supposed to change her personality to fit the “ideal” and it bugs me with every other woman who’s supposed to pretend to be someone they’re not.
It’s a damned good sound-alike, then.
I put this down to the roughage they consume.
Paint Obama as a sixties activist!!!
Good strategy!
He was BORN in the sixties!
That’s Phil Gramm (formerly Senator Gramm, Ignoramus-TX).
He left Texas A&M to go the Senate, and lowered the average IQ of both A&M’s faculty and the US Senate.
Three words: Laura Bush X*nax
Left this comment in the thread downstairs by accident.
The fact that the song is a parody of one (written in the ’50s) made famous by Sam Cooke in 1960 is a nice touch, since it comes from the same era as most of McCain’s pop-culture references.
I like the ad. It goes after McCain without being nasty or scary.
Obama needs to stay away from the voice of doom and grainy footage apocalyptic schlock the Right specializes in. This ad has just the right tone.
Hillary speaking on C-span right now.
“He was a really young DFH!”
I don’t know about you, but I think there’s a really funny TV ad in there somewhere…paging Jon Stewart…
So Phil was propping up the AGGIE faculty IQ?
Eighteen days after me, as it turns out.
We bow to your seniority.
Is that something like Rocky mountain oysters?
That was the consensus opinion in Austin.
I hope Obama’s not going to try Kerry’s strategy on those. I hope there are well funded groups to go after McCain and the Republics.
Oh man, that ad is FUNNY! They seem to have settled on the John McCain: More of the Same theme, and getting a lot of mileage outta those Shrub and “Huggy Bear” McCain photos. Wonder if they’ll continue this throughout, or if they are just trying to set the table with this theme? There is a danger of overplaying it perhaps, or maybe not…so far so good!
With the money advantage (still not used to saying that!) Obama will have a lot of different options. Rock on.
Oops! I take it back. I think I got her mixed up with another of Rahm’s people.
The money advantage isn’t too clear yet…McBush gets 84 million from the gov and the RNC is raking it in pretty well….still Obama should end up with a few more bucks- if he doesn’t piss everyone off.
On reflection, Art Garfunkel also did a cover of Wonderful World (on Watermark). His voice might have been better than JT’s.
W/ the 527’s that advantage may not be as great as you think
I thought I read someplace that Obama had freed up the 527s after all the negative ads from the McSame camp, but I couldn’t find it later. Hope he does so if he hasn’t already.
re: the ad
oh HELL yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the Republic 527s aren’t answered, they win.
John McCain covered “It’s a small world after all”
Millions of Disney visitors have marveled at his unique work with repititious lyrics.
Actually the last reports for July had the McCain/RNC and Obama/DNC pretty much even in cash on hand and the punditocracy was trying to spin it in McCain’s favor but had to acknowledge that Obama had done it in less time, was not wasting it while on vaca and would be raising similar amounts through the fall that McCain would not be allowed to do.
So it does seem to be a decided advantage to the Dems for once.
Combined with that the RNC also has to help prop up the Repub Senate and House committees as well.
Well Obama better not be freein up the 527s or throttling them down- or anything else..
Legally there can be ZERO connection between the two.
(Note- the rules don’t currently apply to goopers)
But McBush hasn’t gotten his $85mm yet has he?
(I don’t keep up with this as well as I should).
yes! our 527’s are back. would be interesting to one day know whether it was in response to McNegative or an Axelrod head fake from the jump
Here is a link to a dKos diary about the Obama response to the Ayers ad in Ohio:
link
It’s so obvious that McCain is going to cheat.
Speaking of Sam Cooke, this is a nice rendition of ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ accompanied by a photographic bio of Obama.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
By freeing up I mean rescinding his call for Dem donors not to fund them. You are of course right about the Rs – IOKIYAR, after all.
Showing Obama playin in a sandbox while Ayers was in his hayday would be a good reply.
Oh- OK—I GUESS that’s OK.
I don’t recall the specifics but at least some of the analyses included the $84M from FEC and the status of Obama fund raising to overcome that.
“Rice sees difficulties in Mideast peace process “
Well no shit Sherlock!!
Love the ad! Terrific.
She’ll do well in her post-Administration career as a hostess at the Bush Library/Amusement Park.
Again – but then he is a POW

For the general election, McCain and Obama are operating under different financial scenarios of their own choosing.
McCain has agreed to accept $84 million in public financing for the general election and the spending restraints that come with it.
Though the party committee can raise and spend as much as it wants to help him, the taxpayer money is the only cash that McCain can spend after accepting his party’s nomination at the convention next month. He essentially needs to drain down his privately funded campaign bank account this month _ and that helps explain the heavy TV spending.
Davis put the budget for September, October and the first few days of November at more than $100 million _ including the taxpayer money and accounts the RNC shares with the campaign _ and said: “We will start the general election fully flush.”
Obama, emboldened by record-shattering collections in the primary, decided to forgo public financing for the general election and became the first major-party presidential candidate in three decades to do so. That means he needs to rely on his significant fundraising capabilities to build up his cash reserves going into the fall, whereas McCain needs to deplete his.
McCain’s last month total exceeded his $21 million
Well, the DNC outraised the RNC last month, which is something I don’t remember happening before during a Prez election, and Obama raised almost double McInsane’s amount last month, which was McInsane’s best month so far. Panama John moves to public funding next month and will only (gah!) have $80-some million to spend for the rest of the campaign. Obama might raise that in ONE month. Even with the usual suspects funding 527s, I think Obama and the Dems will far outraise Repubes when it’s all added together for both sides.
And, they haven’t even really rolled this out yet:
http://narcosphere.narconews.c…..-your-data
It’s estimated that the text message plan for the VP pick gained the campaign 10 million new phone numbers (doesn’t seemed to have pissed off many that it didn’t work out that well). This latest “Vote for Change” Web site might do even more, and the fact that they’re going to turn the Mile High Stadium event into a community organizing “workshop” for an hour is breathtaking to think about how many people will start getting active. The implication of this focus on the ground game for fundraising and public opinion is incredible.
McInsane has Conglomerate Media as his ad agency which is a big advantage, but we’ll be able to buy more ad time, and completely blow them outta the water on ground game, so it’s looking very positive at this point to me.
FDL I believe backed Duckworth’s opponent in the primary Chistine Cegelis.
http://firedoglake.com/2007/09…..nuels-war/
and at that point in time being raised by his D-day vet grandpa and “rosie riveter” grandma.
McCain will ignore any spending restraints and do so without consequence.
Has this been shown here yet? Fox News is a hit at Denver (not):
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/….._0825.html
Not a bad ad but it needs more emotional impact so the viewer wants to punch a Republican in the nose after viewing.
Sam Cooke does Wonderful World
McCain didn’t say it, he looked embarrassed, although he didn’t outright disown the phrase.
Don’t think so, but I wondered at first.
