If there’s a bigger asshole in the corporate media than Mark Halperin, I want to know who it is. In case you missed it, he went on Snuffleupagus this morning and said that McSame’s housing gaffe is incredibly damaging…to Obama.

HALPERIN: My hunch this is going to end up being one of the worst moments in the entire campaign for one of the candidates but it’s Barack Obama. […] I believe that this opened the door to not just Tony Rezko in that ad, but to bring up Reverend Wright, to bring up his relationship with Bill Ayers.

So let’s review.

The far right has been flogging Obama with Wright and Ayers for months. They’ve peddled the vilest innuendos and sleaze about Obama’s patriotism, his citizenship, his religion. They’ve published and distributed wingnut welfare books that contain nothing but smears and lies. McSame hismelf has said many times publicly he thinks Obama wants to lose in Iraq. And McSame has run pretty much non-stop attack ads throughout the campaign, comparing Obama to Britney and Paris and lying about Obama’s positions and his record.

It is that context in which McSame gets caught admitting he doesn’t know how many freaking houses he owns — a gaffe that’s so monumental and politically damaging in an election when the economy will likely be the central issue, it makes Poppy’s grocery store moment seem mild in comparison.

And yet, because Obama mocked him for it, Obama’s the one who’s in trouble, because, darn it, those oh-so-civil and respectful Republicans that are notoriously hesitant to engage in negative political attacks — finally get to play dirty.

Unfuckingbelievable.
