Once upon a time, two authors wrote two books that heavily attacked two presidential candidates.
The first author stuck to known and rock-solid proven and provable facts for the most part, complete with on-the-record witnesses. The second author lied like a rug.
The first author’s book was largely ignored by the national media and so never made any best-seller lists. The second author’s book currently sits at the top of the NYT’s Best Seller list, and was put there by heavy media publicity.
The difference? The first book, Cliff Schecter’s The Real McCain, is about a Republican; the second book, Jerome Corsi’s The Obama Nation, is about a Democrat.
So when somebody like the LAT’s Tim Rutten, in discussing how a fringe freak like Jerome Corsi could have a bestselling book, ignores the roles played by his media buddies and himself in boosting Corsi’s bilge over Schecter’s truth, it makes me want to scream:
"The Obama Nation" was written and printed because major American publishing houses have decided that there’s money to be made in funding right-wing boutique imprints modeled after the Washington-based Regnery, which has made a small fortune stoking the hard-right furnace with combustible prose. Corsi’s book is published by Threshold Editions, a division of Simon & Schuster, which hired right-wing political operative Mary Matalin to edit the imprint. Random House has a similar imprint in Crown Forum, and Penguin Group USA has Sentinel. Their business model — and this is all about business — is predicated on the existence of an echo chamber of right-wing radio and television shows willing to promote these publishers’ products — however noxious. Beyond that is a network of conservative book clubs and organizations willing to place the sort of advance bulk orders for controversial books that will guarantee them a place on the bestseller lists.
Sorry, but that’s horsepuckey.
If it was all about business and the free market, Corsi’s book — propped up by the right-wing sugar daddies behind the bulk sales that create bogus "best sellers" — would never have been published. If it was all about business, then publishers would be seeing the huge ratings that Olbermann, Stewart and Colbert garner on TV (and sales at the bookstore) and want to cash in by getting more progressive books out onto the shelves.
No, this beastie is a product of wingnut welfare, as well as the publisher’s desire to placate the Republicans and McCain in particular — as our own David Neiwert noted, McCain’s campaign has allegedly gone round and threatened to punish any newspaper, radio or TV network that so much as mentioned The Real McCain, much less reviewed it.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is just one reason why I refer to the Republican Party and its "mainstream" press stenographers as The GOP/Media Complex.

If Corsi’s book is as bad as I have heard — and I have no intention of reading it myself (I have better things to do with my time) — if it contains demonstrable and probably deliberate falsehoods, why is there not some accountability demanded under this country’s libel laws? Are those laws so weak that any lie can be put into print with barely a peep of protest, let alone legal action?
“why is there not some accountability demanded under this country’s libel laws? Are those laws so weak that any lie can be put into print with barely a peep of protest, let alone legal action?”
It’s interesting that when celebrities opt to sue some yellow-journalism hit-piece they do it in England, Australia or elsewhere. Quite simply that’s because in the US one must prove that the writer actually KNEW that the slur was a lie…wheareas in England it simply must be shown to be a preposterous lie and damaging to the persons’ reputation.
AP is at it again. It has a short history of how McCain won his party’s nomination. McCain has been getting hit a lot recently because of his wealth and how out of touch he is. So AP spins him as a humble guy with quotes like.
And then they use the meme that it is always good if it is for the Republicans with this George Schultz quote:
Out of touch? Rich? No way
Gosh, what a guy, and not a single word about him flying around in his wife’s private jet. If the MSM disappeared off the face of the earth tomorrow, the chief result would be that the country would be left better informed than it is now.

It’s the republican media stupid.
Has Olbermann featured this book?
On Fresh Air last week was an interview with a former editor at some publishing house. Asked about editorial policies today he stated that books are not edited today as in the past because the editor’s jobs have been cut to increase profits. A lot of the books that are published today, particularly this kind of stuff, would never have made it past the editor’s desk in the past.
We could start a collection here so FDL could buy Cliff’s book in bulk. Two can play this game.
I still can’t understand why the Corset book isn’t classified as fiction
it’s laughable, Rudy’s saying McCain’s a regular guy, really.
Doesn’t Rudy’s wife book a airplane seat for her purse, her 20 thousand dollar purse? Of course, she wouldn’t have to do that if they had their own plane tho.
Morning PW!
Buying right wing books up in bulk by wealthy right wingers is a sign that no one in America has actually read Corsi’s book. Bah hahahahahahahahaha! Maybe we should check the garage of one of Johnny McTeleprompter’s 10 homes to see if most of these books are stashed there?
So, PW. You just can’t leave it alone.
Good on ya! ;->
list of best or worst?
Why don’t we each buy a second copy of Cliff’s book and donate it to the library? I’m reading mine right now. That would increase sales, put money in Cliff’s pocket and maybe make the MSM pay attention.
Wonder how many of each Walmart got.
Excellent idea! They cut my library’s budget so any help they get benefits the community.
let’s see, there is FICTION, Damned FICTION, and Complete Damned FICTION
I got my copy at Netroots Nation and got it signed. I made a big point of reading it on an airplane last week. I think lots of people were looking at the cover…
I was at my local chain bookstore last night and saw “Obama Nation” with a very large display. I also saw “The Case Against Barack Obama” prominently displayed. I hadn’t heard about that one. I presume it is just as bad.
McCainstream Media in full flower this a.m. courtesy Pompous Tom and Sit! Wolfie. CNN still pushin’ the stale ol’ story of Hillary and her PUMAs. Hey, guys, maybe Hillary wasn’t vetted because she didn’t want to be vetted.
Maybe she didn’t want to have her finances and record poked around into.
So let’s talk about something relevant, like the finances and record of L’il john MsSturgis. I’m starting to think POW stands for pimper of wife.
Did I kill the thread? Honest, I brushed my teeth!

AP is a wholly owned Trojan Horse/subsidiary of the McCainstream media.
Drudge’s pal Halperin is truly venomous this morning. The disdain he sends Donna Brazile, through his creepy soul-less eyes, is a sickening sight to behold. Halperin is a walking McSame sandwichboard.
So you’re the one :)
Don’t want to mess up the thread but I was fascinated to read about your army worms. I had no idea they were still around. I remember my Dad taking me out in the field and showing me what the worms were doing and it was devastating. I hope you get rid of them soon.

Citizen Phoenix Woman:
Great post, thanx…this is a great explanation of how the “wingnut welfare” system works and how it gives cover to the rest of corporate media to advance insane political arguments as mainstream. I would jest like to point out how ever that the wingnut welfare system and the corporate media make up the entirety of the fascist propaganda structure. And there will be no change in this reality until there are some fundamental changes in our economic system.
As an aside, isn’t it wonderful that Dean Barkley and the “Independence Party” branch of the Republican Party of Minnesota are bein used ta get Al Franken elected to the Senate? As a native Minnesotan, I have been very disappointed in the DFL for givin’ legitimacy to the triangulation of the Independence Party and the Republican Party over the last 18 years…with the exception of Coleman’s tainted win the first time, has a fascist won more’n 50% of the vote in a state-wide election in the last 20 years?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE TRUTH CAN ALWAYS USE A LITTLE MUSCLE!!
95% of the people who do work of promoting right wing bilge like 95% of the public at large are directly harmed by the electoral results of their efforts. How do I stop someone stop beating him or herself over the head with a hammer when the benefits of not being beaten are so patently obvious? Sometimes it seems that evolution has failed us in the social sense that we seem to have a problem recognizing predators let alone avoiding them. Sucking up may put off the inevitable but salad or dessert the end result is the same.
One of the pups recently recounted a story about helping with placement of corsi books at a local walmart. *g*

In a few months….. in places like ebay & Amazon you will be able to buy the Corsi book for $1.00…. the wingnut press welfare system needs to clean out their warehouses for the next piece of trash it is funding via ther wingnut publishing welfare system.
I was told that the NYT’s best seller list has an asterisk next to this title to identify that “best selling” many not be accurate…. kind of like the steroid asterisk but who would know…
Thanks. I’m really starting to believe that I just got one bad bag of millet seeds that was a variety that is very susceptible. The worms have been around for close to a week but don’t seem to have done any real harm to the two other pastures. I planted from three bags of seed and I distinctly remember that the bad pasture got a separate bag. I refuse to take it out on the nice lady at my feed store. She got the seeds for me. She has helped me with so many other things that I’m not even going to mention it to her. I have a pest control guy coming tomorrow morning to help assess the situation.
I remember that and I am heading to bookstore tomorrow
Besides buying books in bulk to make themselves feel better, I think the same kind of right wing nuts are buying market stocks to do the same thing! Yep. They want to make sure ole Georgie Bush is the guy who had the “solid” economy! Spit.
Yeah, I’m gonna be in the vicinity of a chain retailer meself on Thursday. Let the games begin!
in 6 months you will find that book in the frikin dollar store.
“I’m John McCain, and I approved these methods…
of torture.”
In 6 weeks you will find boxes of that book in the dumpster
You know, I saw that stupid C*rsi book at Walmart the other day and noticed it was shelved wrong. (It was in non-fiction.
So I reshelved all of them. There’s a real nice little niche behind the bottom row of the romance novel section where books can just …fall and never be seen again, unless you’re 3 and really looking.
your adore..able
When I was in my friendly local Border’s the other day, ‘Obama Nation’ had disappeared from prominent display, and not just because they’ve rearranged the new-book tables.
have headache just lurking……carry on
Bad News: New book on the NYTimes Best Seller List at #6 – “The Case Against Barack Obama” by Freddoso. Has a dagger showing Bulk Sales.
Good News: Bacevich and Suskind books also on the Best Seller List (no daggers).
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08…..ref=slogin
One man’s truth is another’s lie.
The post I read about that one, at DKos, made it sound even worse. Apparently Freddoso can’t even keep his lies straight; he contradicts himself.
One man’s lie is another man’s bullshit
Yes with the front cover taken off and marked “stolen”. LOL!
OT? Anyone watching This Week with George? I was ever so surprised to see Cokie Roberts actually come up with something that actually was an excellent point to Obama’s benefit. Mark Halperin was saying that the “house” incident was going to be a seminal point that would go against Obama because it would now open him up to attacks about Rezko and Bill Ayres. The discussion went on with Donna Brazile saying something about personal attacks were going to happen anyway, to which Halperin replied would she rather see the personal attacks or discussions about the issues like war and the economy. It was then that Cokie said that the “house” incident was about the economy. And then she went on to explain why as I sat with my mouth agape. I never thought I’d see the day!
Even a broken clock is right twice daily.
That’s what I feared. What was amazing was that this Barnes and Noble had huge numbers of both of these books in their displays. Do the sales numbers on the NYTimes list reflect orders by the chains or actual sales in the stores (and the bulk orders to the wingnut welfare houses)? I wonder if the chains are adding to the fluffing of the numbers by putting far more copies of these books than they ever expect to sell into each retail store.
I have been pondering exactly how the McCain campaign would punish media outlets that dare to mention the book and have concluded (it might have been obvious to everybody else at the outset) that they would do so by having their corporate cronies withhold advertising. Pretty effective tactic, actually.
They’re stacked in the pews of many a wingnut church

Citizen tbsa:
How about volunteerin’ ta gather em all up fer nuthin and press ‘em into cattle and hog feed…now THAT would be a real example of new age “Andremanureship”.
It seems though that there are some changes comin in a lotta sectors of our economy especially publishin’ and information distribution.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, AND DON’T LET THE BASTARDS INTO YER YARD!!
True enough! Also true, the McShame campaign has not needed or used any excuses for smearing Obama to the best of their ability. Rezko and Ayres were going to be used at some point anyway. And it was time they got hit back. I wish they would tie the house bit to McLame’s calling Obama elitist better, though.
Guess that ”Thou shalt not bear false witness” rule doesn’t apply to wingers.
Amazon is selling the Freddos book for half price. Reading the list of tags is interesting: most people really don’t like these books. The top tags for both are things like ’smear’, ’swiftboating’, ‘propaganda’, and the like. The ratings are running either 5-star or 1-star, with someone wanting a zero-star rating.
I saw that. Halperin’s idiocy is a continuing source of amazement. Good for Cokie for calling him on his bullshit… AS IF the McCain campaign wasn’t going to bring up Wright and Ayers ANYWAY. To quote my mentor Bugs Bunny, “-what an imbessel, what an ignoranimus, what an ultra-maroon…”
Gawd I’d have to become a vegan – talk about poisoning the food supply
Citizen ratfood:
The “free market” may jest come back ta bite the fascists in the ass on this though ‘cuz most a the corporations ken afford ta have McCrazy loose the election but can’t afford ta give up two months of major market advertisin’.
Wasn’t there a big kerfuffle among the bricks and mortars because Obama’s publisher Chelsea Green had cut some kind of deal to release his new policy book first via Amazon?

Most commandments evidently contain loopholes for conservatives. I guess God and Moses should have tightened up the language although on the surface, they appear pretty succinct. Maybe there was an Executive Signing Statement which wasn’t included in the Old Testament.
She’s doing a left flank blocking maneuver after she must have gotten holy hell for her idiotic comments about Hawaii being an “exotic” place.

I hope you’re right, although the stick McCain waved at them probably included advertisers like Big-Pharma. The thought of losing revenue from non-stop Cialis ads would immediately render network executives completely impotent.
Understand that Blackwater has a division looking for loopholes.
There are many places where the playing field is tilted and the refs look the other way—and it’s right to raise hell about it and work the refs…the other side does.
The good news is that the people who read these books read em cause Rush told em to- and Obama is never going to get their vote no matter WHAT he does or says- most of these books are preaching to the choir. People buy em to have their opinions validated, not to form an opinion.
The voters that matter have probably NEVER read a political book- although they many know every detail of the stats of the 1909 Red Sox.
The right wing fires that the corporate media stoke could burn down the very free speech structures our democracy is founded on…it will probably happen even if there are some Democratic firefighters on the front lines.
Not to mention the Budweiser commercials.
Yeah, the thugs ain’t good for much but they sure take “Best in Show” for creating/finding/utilizing loopholes (regardless of the variety). :-(
I doubt that the wingnuts even bother to read the books. Just buy them and use them as coffee table books to impress their wingnut friends.
Most people are only now dimly becoming aware that we are going to have an election this year and who the candidates are…this thing has just begun…
As it begins, I need to remind myself of the volatility of two way race poll numbers….
If 2% of the electorate is jumping back and forth between the candidates, they create a 4% swing….If Obama is ahead by 6 points and two percent shift to McCain- then the lead shrinks to two because Obama has two points less and McCain has two points more….
roots project for the week — contact your local library/libraries and request the Schecter book. If they don’t have it, donate it. We can do our own book project one book, one library at a time….
The corporate media and the GOP are two heads on the same fat maggot, gnawing on the bloated corpse of our Republic. I’m not suggesting anyone give up the fight but at this point, full resuscitation will probably require something akin to Divine Intervention.
Speaking of Media bias- the Washington Post has theirs on full display—they just did a poll that shows Obama with a four point lead- how do they headline it “Both candidates hold their positions”.
This is followed by a subhead highlighting every bit of bad news for obama and none for McCain.
The WaPo wants McCain- we’d better get used to it.
There, I fixed it for ya. :)
D’oh! Why didn’t I think of that?
Mr. Smith upstairs.
You might want to mention it to her anyway just as an FYI. She may not be aware of the potential problem and if she’s as good as you say, will most likely appreciate the heads-up.
Chinese boxing — fix is in. Shame on China.
Here’s a thought: anybody else here know about BookCrossing? Check them out–it’s a fun idea. You basically give away books, leaving them in public places, with a BookCrossing label on them explaining that they’re free, just pick it up and read it, then pass it along to someone else.
How about we buy a whole slew of Schecter’s book and seed them throughout the community as BookCrossing books? It’d be even more likely to get out there than the library idea (how many Republicans have library cards?).
Oops, forgot the linky:
BookCrossing
One of the early ways a President Barack Obama can reveal he is not just a bi-racial Bill Clinton, is to restore the Fairness Doctrine in Broadcasting.
A democracy cannot stand when patently false information is propagated across the media consuming electorate.
One party has a major broadcast outlet owned by a person born a foreigner to the U.S.A.
Without this most basic reform, ALL the other reforms become nearly impossible.
I hope Barack Obama is not yet another Go-along to Get-along politician posing as a Democrat.
Sorry if I am obtuse but just saying the book is fiction, doesn’t make it true. I haven’t seen any evidence yet people who haven’t even read the book are jumping on the bandwagon. How can we have an intelligent conversation about hearsay? Put the evidence on the table and then we can argue it one way or the other.
Birchleg, Corsi has a career record. Everything else he has written has been fiction. (The one before this was about how George W. is conspiring to eliminate the US gummint altogether and replace it with a Canada/Mexico/what-used-to-be-us behemoth swamped with nasty brown skinned weirdos babbling in Spanish.
Go read the collected works of LaRouche or L. Ron Hubbard. You’ll find a lot more evidence worth mulling over on your table. Seeing as you’re so eager to waste your time.
I see, I have not read any of his books but I thought it was odd that everyone was jumping on it as fiction when I didn’t see any evidence. Let me play the devil’s advocate, do people on this blog believe his book about Bush was ficticious as well? Just curious.
Well Birchleg, just for the record, I have not read any of Corsi’s books either.
But after learning that he was one of the authors of the Swiftboat lies against Kerry in ‘04 I started out skeptical of his “writing.”
And all the reports I have read on his book, included by those reviewers and reporters who have not shown themselves friends of Obama, I would have to agree that fiction is aa legitimate statement.
Especially since he is supposed to be repeating every discredited lie about Obam including the “He’s a Muslim, he hates Whitey, he’s not a citizen, etc”
And Corsi himself has stated that he knows he has falsehoods in the book and the sole purpose of it was to defeat Obama.
So what would you call something where the author (and editor Mary Matalin) are on record as saying it is filled with lies?
Down boy, I’m just asking questions! If it is so obvious that it is filled with lies, why waste your time talking about it. Maybe that is why it is so popular. Maybe people should just ignore him and let him fade into obscurity where he belongs! People love controversy and it sells, don’t give him any fuel and he will die out.
Look at Iran, if we would just ignore the little twit, they might actually elect a real leader who represents the people. Assuming, of course that the people of that country are indeed allow to vote freely.
You do understand that the “popularity” is based on bulk sales. I.e., where the folks at places go out and buy cases of the book at a time just so it hits the “best seller” lists?
An old and discredited right wing trick which is why the books that reach
“best seller” status through bulk sales are identified as such on the lists.
And we will see it as a “free gift for donating X dollars” from some of the right wing organizations within a month.
Please tell me you are not that stupid. You honestly think that greedy right wingers are going to spend their money trying to make some book top the best seller list!? Have you met these people?
Conservatives don’t need to spend their money to influence the election and they most of them won’t. They find other ways to do it. If is one thing I have learned about big money conservatives, they don’t put their money where their mouths are, they find other ways.
So who is making the bulk book buys of stuff by Corsi (or Ann Coulter or Jonah Goldberg or any of the other right wing author)? It damn sure isn’t the liberals in the crowd.
I think most business classes would call it someone taking a small loss in hopes of a larger pay-off down the road.
YMMV.
People are buying the book becuase you are making a big deal of it. Had you not done so, no one would even know it existed. I gaurentee you won’t here it used on any conservative talking points becuase it’s obviously crap. Even the conservatives are smart enough not to use easily disproved literature to support their ideas. Think about it, when anything is a big deal, it sells no matter what it is.
There are always going to be stupid people buying stuff from both sides of the political spectrum. Hopefully, most of them will be busy reading this book instead of voting for our nation’s leader.
If liberals rail against any book which supports conservatism, mindless conservatives will go out and buy it. That is true for the stupid ones, the smart ones are more discerning. What we need to do is get over this two party system and realize America is about all it’s people and elect a representative who will support America, not half, not conservative, not liberal, but everyone, currently there is no such candidate! In fact there isn’t even anyone of the horizon who is going to bring this country together.
Don’t even pretend you have a candidate who is up to the task! Our future is bleak unless we make drastic changes! If the meak are to inherit the earth, we should have a candidate. Who out there will speak for everyone?? Name him or her, I challenge you to name one person who is able.
Go people, name your candidate, name one person who represents everyoneone!!! Exactly! There is no one! Everyone in the house and the senate, are part of the problem. Thank goodness the supreme court upheld the second amendment, it is coming to that point! Put your life where your mouth is and join me in making a new government for the people, of the people, and by the people! Just as Lincoln stated in the Gettysburg Address. Stop your petty BS and stand for something for a change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[end soapbox]
No soapbox, just hope! Apparently that hope is misplaced! It saddens me that there isn’t anyone who wants to make this country better for everyone. Everyone has their hand out and wants things changed for them and could give a dang about everyone else. Even the liberal community remains quite when it comes to a worthy candidate. Don’t you people get it, we need a change, a leader, an honest person who cares about America!
End of arguement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
