Thirteen 2006 challengers endorsed by Blue America now sit in Congress-- Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD), John Tester (D-MT) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), plus Reps. Arcuri (D-NY), Bruce Braley (D-IA), Carney, Donna Edwards (D-MD), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), John Hall (D-NY), Paul Hodes (D-NH), Jerry McNerney (D-CA), Patrick Murphy (D-PA), and Joe Sestak (D-PA).
Four others from 2006 had close calls and are poised to win in November: Vic Wulsin (D-OH), Larry Kissell (D-NC), Charlie Brown (D-CA) and Eric Massa (D-NY).
Not one of these was a "sure thing" or even an easy race. We leave the easy races for others. Blue America does the hard ones. Our first pick of 2008 was Alan Grayson and this Tuesday he faces recently "converted" Republican Mike Smith and an establishment hack and wealthy clownish shill from the Republican wing of the Democratic Party, Charlie Stuart, in the Democratic primary.
After a very tough race Alan looks like the prohibitive favorite to win Tuesday and go into the general election campaign against incumbent rubber stamp Ric Keller with a full head of steam.
I see Alan as one of the Blue America success stories. If you've missed our earlier chats with Alan, I want to recommend you read the Vanity Fair feature about his efforts fighting Iraq war profiteers or go over and watch some of the TV shows he's been on talking about these efforts.
Above is a clip of Alan's brand new TV ad which he just started running on Orlando television. It's powerful and to the point. I think you'll like the ending.
Today Alan is joining us in the comments section for another chat. The other day I asked him to help me understand the whole concept of "change" in a political context.
Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination by being the candidate of change. Now John McCain says that he’s the candidate of change, and we bite our lips and try not to laugh out loud. But since the promise of change crosses the whole political spectrum, we’d better start thinking-- what will change... and how?
What will change are our priorities. Specifically, we will concentrate on meeting human needs, our needs. Health is a human need. Education is a human need. Public safety is a human need. Affordable transportation is a human need.
Here are some things that are not human needs: Making sure that you can own a gun. Preventing two people of the same gender from uniting. Insisting that other people speak English. Instigating unnecessary wars. When our priorities change, these issues take a back seat.
I, for one, would like to live in a place where the hungry are fed, the homeless are sheltered, the children are educated, and the sick are healed. That’s what we’ve been told, for around 3000 years, that a just society tries to accomplish. Only recently has anyone suggested that a just society is one where everyone is packing heat.
And when that change occurs, the economy will improve dramatically. Why? Because meeting human needs keeps money in the country. If the bridge that fell down in Minneapolis-- which is still down-- were rebuilt, then the construction worker who rebuilds that bridge will make money. He will use that money to pay his rent, and his landlord will make money. The landlord will go to dinner in a restaurant in Minneapolis, and the waiter will make money. The waiter will get his hair cut, and the barber will make money. Meeting human needs means putting more money in the hands of Americans. And spending it on the war in Iraq means it’s gone, forever.
The U.S. trade deficit is $2 million a minute. Under the Bush Administration, money has gushed out of this country. No wonder gas is $4 a gallon, the cost of living is rising, unemployment is up, and the housing market is down. It’s the worst case of economic mismanagement in American history.
And that will change. Because people with a conscience are coming together, and saying “we need to take care of each other.” People with a conscience are taking power in America. And people are letting their conscience guide them.
We're changing. And that’s real change.
I have no doubt Alan is going to win on Tuesday. After that he faces a well-financed incumbent with nearly a million dollars on hand-- a well-financed incumbent who has been faithfully serving the special interests who have given him millions of dollars and have every intention of shelling out whatever they have to to keep him in office. But Orlando is a very changed district and Ric Keller has never been up against a candidate like Alan Grayson.
This could be one of Blue America's most important achievements. Take a look at the clip up top again. Join me in sending Grayson to Congress: our Blue America page is here.

Hey Alan - welcome back to firedoglake!
Great to be here. Did you know that Krystal’s has wifi?
Welcome back to FDL, Alan. We’ll all be praying for you Tuesday– or at least crossing our fingers! Before we get into the race in Orlando, since you’re our first guest since Obama’s text message, let me ask you what you think about his selection of Joe Biden as a running mate.
Hey Howie!
Welcome back to FDL soon to be (I hope) Representative Grayson!
Biden is a person with a conscience. That’s good enough for me.
I’d like to know what other people think about Biden.
I just want to say that I’m glad that we have an audience here. It would be weird to be doing this all alone.
Well… it could have been a lot worse– like Bayh or Kaine. And if you compare him to McCain/Romney… well, he’s an all-American hero. Alan, is that ad at the top of the page on TV already?
OK. Let’s talk about the timetable for withdrawing from Iraq. My suggestion: 5 years ago.
Welcome Alan!
I think Biden is a perfect match for Barack Obama. ;-)
I guess in a case of damning with faint praise:
He could have done a lot worse with some of hte other names that were floated.
I’d like to know what other people think about Biden.
He will brook no babble.
Will be very hard to beat in the V.P. Debate.
Perfect guy to call “bullshit” often, loudly and effectively as the R slime machine descends toward the election.
The ad at the top of the page has been on Orlando TV for 48 hours. We put it up during the Olympics, which seems to be what a lot of people are watching, judging from the response.
Of course Biden will be hard to beat in a VP debate. They’ll have time for only one question. If there’s anyone who knows how to filibuster . . . .
Spread the word, Digg this post
Personally there were a few that I rooted for but they were unrealistic, Biden is a good choice that I can feel real good about
I would have been fine if the withdrawal in ‘91 had been the end of things myself.
But I’m kinda funny that way.
I’m pleased that Obama picked a progressive. One more sign that he won’t sell out.
Is it on broadcast TV or cable or both? This guy who makes your ads, is amazing. This is the second one in a row he hit out of the ballpark. It seems to me that ads like this are even better for going after that rubber stamp imbecile incumbent than even for a primary. Is there any indication yet that Keller knows he has a race?
Dugg.
Our ad is on both broadcast and cable. We’re showing it in around 100 spots a day.
Keller has no idea what’s going on. A week ago, he sent out tens of thousands of e-mail invitations to a “town hall” meeting. Thirty people showed up, and we sent most of them. He said he looked forward to his November race against Charlie Stuart. Will someone please buy him a ticket for the clue train?
By the way, the triple chocolate milkquakes at Krystal’s are really, really good.
What a great ad — I wish more Democratic challengers talked about the war waste and profiteering the way you do, sir. Put them in prison, indeed: music to my ears. Americans know something’s terribly wrong with the way our government lets contracts to cronies without bidding or oversight. The horror stories from Iraq are just the tip of the iceberg, but they are among the most egregious, considering our troops are in harm’s way due to lies, cheating, and graft.
Thank you for the hard work and sacrifice any campaign like yours entails, and best of luck to you next week. Are there debates scheduled with the incumbent? And how can we help make them happen?
welcome alan–here is a question and i will be back in a while to check for response.
good luck.and thanks.

what happened with this voter id lawsuit?
-snip-
The Florida lawsuit argues that not only would the law reject thousands of legitimate voters because of typos, misspellings, and the like, but that minorities are the most effected because Hispanic, Haitian, and African-American names in general tend to be more prone to transcription errors. The groups cite a report by the Social Security Administration that, “of 2.6 million voter registration records submitted to the SSA through February of 2007, 46.2% — nearly half of the records – resulted in a failed match.” Other state databases, such as New York, the lawsuit says, have failed to match approximately twenty percent of voter registrations to driver’s license databases. The lawsuit is ongoing.
-snip-
Personally, I still prefer the White Castle gut bombs to Krystals though.
Are you getting the feeling how the high price of gas issue is cutting politically? Are people in your district buying the Drill Here Now approach? Do they blame incumbents like Keller who have taken so much money from Big Oil and then voted for their special interests year after year after year? Is this issue going to help you get elected in November? The Republicans are going to try to pin the high price of gas on Democrats.
We’ll see debates if, and only if, the polls show that Keller is behind. He ducked debate after debate with his primary opponent. I’m beginning to wonder if Keller will bother even to return to the district between now and November. Maybe he’s thinking ahead to his new career — DC lobbyist.
I don’t know what happened to that lawsuit, but I’d like to find out. Maybe someone else can help both of us.
Will someone please buy him (Keller) a ticket for the clue train?
umm - no.
I am appalled to see how Big Oil is trying to manipulate people’s real pain over $4 a gallon gasoline for their own benefit. Some people can see through that, and some can’t. But when I get a dozen e-mails from Delta, United, etc., telling me that I need to support offshore drilling, I know something’s up. (I just wish the airlines would concentrate on better service, and not tell me how to vote or think.)
You’re a lot more discerning than I am. The only difference I see between White Castle and Krystal’s is that Krystal’s is closer.
I have a question — what is making some people hesitate about Obama? I’m having trouble seeing it, myself.
Flip-flop on FISA.
Apparently running to the center/right and taking the “base” for granted.
Using right wing talking points as the starting point rather than re-framing the issues to show those talking points to be the mumbo-jumbo gibberish that they are.
I love your new ad - hard hitting against a government that could cheat people and hurt the troops simultaneously.
Here’s a profile of four opponents in the Democratic primary:
(1) Committed a hit and run against a child. Expelled from college for cheating.
(2) Went bankrupt. Didn’t pay $250,000 in taxes. IRS put liens on his property.
(3) Republican his whole life until 2004. Maxed out twice in contributions to our Republican governor in 2006.
(4) Lives 15 miles outside the district. 24 years old. Has never held a job in his life.
Seriously, why do people this flawed even bother to run?
well, hans von spakovsky, the architect of that, circumventing the civil rights division to do it, is now baaaaaack—-that’s why i wondered if the florida mess had been straightened out yet, cuz now he’s gonna be in charge of oversight, along with 5 republicans and 2 dems…..and it was his brainchild.
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpoi....._hires.php
Among Spakovsky’s duties will be overseeing the USCCR’s report on the Justice Department’s monitoring of the 2008 presidential elections, a source inside the USCCR told TPMmuckraker.
Right — that’s what the ad tries to show. That the so-called “patriots” are letting the profiteers rip us off, AND hurt the troops.
I am worried that the toads and cockroaches whom the Bush Administration has appointed all through the Government will remain in their civil service-protected positions after January 2009. It will be very interesting to see what it will take to dislodge them.
Is there anyone watching who would like to run for Congress, as a Democrat with a conscience? If so, I can tell you what it’s like.
I think the last scene in your new ad is just thing for lots of them– after trials of course.
Yes, Alan; that is a huge issue and it’s like having little spots of cancer all over the entire federal agency body…it’s the same story with all the Rovians out there that he metastasized out into running GOP campaigns.
I think that the Rove approach — take whatever’s wrong with your guy, and try to make it stick to his opponent — is wearing a little thin. At least, I hope so.
A thought: If a giant meteor were heading straight for Earth, and would destroy all life in 3 hours, there would still be a lot of Republicans upset about the assault weapons ban.
same as my dad being a corporate accountant with one, i bet.
We had a nominated candidate here in CO in 2006 who ran against Delay aide
Marilyn Musgrave she had had her house remodeled then filed bankruptcy.
A local Republican told me that when he saw that ad up above, and it came to the scene where I’m on top of that huge crate, he shouted at his TV, “Jump! Jump!”
The one limited “consolation” is that I’d guess most of those cancers are concentrated in the GS12-15 and SES ranks. Anything lower in grade than those areas would most likely be considered “beneath their exalted talents.”
Unfortunately, those are grades where they can cause considerable damage as career staff and act very passive/aggressive in bucking an Obama Administration priorities.
yep, but this one they tried to get to be an fec commissioner, then when that failed, they put him on the usccr on oversight of elections…..
i just wanted to make sure you knew about it since you’re in florida, and maybe you can use it somehow…
good luck to you.
LOL! Alan, there aren’t a lot of incumbents who get turned out of office– for all sorts of reasons (including gerrymandered districts and a rigged campaign finance system that favors incumbents). Are voters you’re meeting in Orlando telling you anything that makes you think they’re ready to turn out Keller who, after is, is someone they’ve been voting for since 2000?
That’s exactly right — the Bush plants can try to stall Obama Administration initiatives, and then blame Obama for not getting enough done. Which is one reason why we need better Congressional oversight.
and that playing with their satellite lasers headed that meteor straight for earth.
Keller’s in big trouble. The district was gerrymandered in 2001 to give the Republican a 14-point advantage, and now that advantage is . . . gone. Obama and ACORN have gotten so many Democrats registered that the district is now 39% Republican and 39% Democrat.
As for Keller himself, his big problem is that nobody likes him, not even Republicans. The Democrats just haven’t put up anyone good against him. Until now.
Just watched the ad, Mr. Grayson. Well done. Keep wearing that tie and you shouldn’t catch any flak regarding lapel pins. Good luck on Tuesday. (beware of hanging chad)
Excuse me, but the Second Amendment guarantees the right to own a satellite laser. Doesn’t it?
It will be interesting to see all these anti-union/anti-civil service plants claiming the union and civil service protections when they are called into the Offices of the higher ups (secretary/under-secretary/assistant secretary/etc) and/or Congress to explain their actions or lack of actions.
Weirdly, a Republican wrote to me about the tie. I guess he thinks that only Republicans are allowed to be patriotic, or something.
Alan, The never ending republican theme is their anti-abortion fanaticism
Are they ever going to see that the last thing the republicans want is that this issue is taken off of the table and not have this issue to rally around.
…and a Doomsday Device.
Why, oh why did Bob Graham endorse one of them? I was very disappointed when I saw that!
If they try to keep Obama from getting things done, then he should give them each a desk facing the wall, and take away their in-boxes.
and i really liked the ad, wouldn’t change a thing.
succinct, precise, factual, lots of visuals to back up the words without detracting from your message.
excellent.
and nice tie.
I just wish that they would show some concern for people’s well-being after they are born.
only if you give one to israel, too.
Actually, the Graham endorsement was from two years ago, when my opponent ran against Keller. As the Sentinel pointed out, he used the same ad he used two years ago, when he lost. As if nothing has happened in the past two years.
I believe that is both a time-honored and legal means of dealing with uncooperative folks that can’t be fired yet are unwilling to support the administration.
Quick poll, just for FireDogLakers: What made you into a progressive? It’s something I think about.
Truthfully, they don’t care about unborn life either. Most of the planks in the Republican platform are an illusion. The only real one regards keeping government off the back of big-business and on the back of the middle-class.
What is it about Florida that produces such snappy, smart, and articulate Democrats? We need more like you everywhere, sir.
Okay, firepups, it’s match-money time. I’ll match five of your five-dollar contributions to Alan Grayson’s campaign at Blue America today — so your five dollars will sing like fifty!
Who’s in?
Great ad: we’ll send enough to run it a couple of times on Rachel Maddow’s new show in the general.
I’m a progressive because of seeing too many things that were unfair, where the rules were changed to favor the powerful at the expense of the average person. They went too far…it was egregious.
Thank you! I appreciate the support, and that will help to spread the word.
What made me a progressive?
My grandmother’s warnings about a Richard Nixon presidency — almost all of which came true. I think all of them would have transpired had Nixon served his entire second term. We’ve seen a lot of it happen with Nixon2, the Cheney/Rumsfeld Return.
Have you been endorsed by the Orlando Sentinel?
What is the number one thing you are hearing from your constituents?
For me, it is medical care, $752 for one blood test. Seemed just a Little High!
empathy
Yes, $750+ for a blood test is too much. The problem is that there is one price for insurance companies, and then a different price — usually five times as much — for everyone else. Why not the same price for everyone?
I think a combination of things including the family I was raised in in Kentucky (there was always a small sense of noblesse oblige), growing up and becoming politically aware at an early age with the Kennedys, Johnson, MLK, and the Civil Rights and Vietnam War eras.
And being a progressive/liberal seems to be far more in line with the Christian teachings I learned as a child than what all the “prosperity preachers” offer.
Mr. Grayson, I live abroad and not a day goes by without some report of atrocity as reported in The Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl.....le/7747517
thus:
It is becoming a necessity in fact to hold any news source responsible for reporting false, semi-factual, fraudulent, propaganda, or miss-information that acts to deceive, hide or misdirect information to the public. There is no reason the public there should not be intimately aware of what your country is doing. What are you going to do about this abomination to the body public?
Well put, dakine01. You may say we’re dreamers, but we’re not the only ones. Imagine.
Alan win big, Biden is a dem with a heart and has been chosen and will accept the nom. I am much more concerned about a progressive agenda at the convention.
OT Pelosi in Wall Street Journal: “the Pelosis’ net asset value is estimated at between $35 million and $156 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.” Who picked her and why she is so vested in the Corporation?
The only answer is to end the war. There is no mass medium in America that would report what the Guardian reports almost every day. Here, they’re all “embedded” — embedded in the Bush Administration’s lies.
caring about human beings, all of them. and from that, that people have the right to make their own choices in their lives and play on a level playing field…in all ways, economic, social, religious, etc….
caring about fairness, understanding that it isn’t always my/our turn, but that everyone should get a turn…not logical in the real world, but would be nice.
and that there are poeple who are never going to play fair. and there are people who can’t play…never will..and just like on the playground, the rest of us need to make sure it’s safe and healthy and fun to be there.when someone gets hurt, nurse’s office.someone hungry, share your sandwich. got a bully? make sure he ends up in a mud puddle. and suspended.
sounds silly, but i kinda mean it exactly that way.
this is historic, you’re kinda on the same pr tour with obama right now at my house, he just came on…
I’ll answer that one. When I was in the Army, 1968-70, I met all kinds of people, straight and gay, all ethic groups, middle class and working class, good citizens, willing to serve their country at the risk of their own lives. Their lives weren’t worth spit to either party or to the upper class. Both parties supported the war, and no one spoke for the ones being asked to die for nothing. The few politicians who spoke up against the war were liberals, and would be progressives today. So am I.
Ethic groups and ethnic groups.
lean here this week teddy, but i’ll throw some on the pile..
like your ways, alan.
nice brain ya got there…would love for you to be able to use it on our behalf.
: )
At this point, the progressive agenda depends on two things: (1) Obama winning, and (2) what is in Obama’s heart. I’m cautiously optimistic, on both counts.
Remember, when Obama graduated from Harvard Law (8 years after I did), he the first African-American to be the President of Law Review. He could have taken a Wall St. job for $190,000 a year. 93% of his class (and my class) did. And Obama took a job for $13,000, doing voter regisration and community organizing. He didn’t sell out then. I don’t think he’ll sell out now.
” Send me to congress and I’ll Send them to prison”.
that should get a lot od votes for you…accountability is the bridle that keeps government in check the runaway war spending is a crime.
I wish all of us (Blue America, progressive blogs, commenters, etc.) could do a better job vetting the Blue America candidates we decide to support. It saddens me to look at the list of 10 Representatives we supported in 2006, and see that 4 of them are Blue Dogs (Arcuri, Carney, Gillibrand and Murphy) while 2 more (McNerney and Sestak) voted in favor of the disgusting FISA bill.
None of those six will ever get another penny from me, and I will gladly support any true progressives who will primary them.
How in the hell did we get snookered so badly on that group?
I’m reading your answers about why you are a progressive carefully, and I am moved. Thank you for sharing what makes you who you are.
The “snookering” issue is a big problem. Voters think that when they go into the voting booth, it’s as if there were a slot machine inside. They often have no idea what to expect from candidates, because talk is cheap, and some people will say anything. (You should hear some of what I had to listen to, in our 8 primary debates here.) My answer is that you go with people who have led progressive lives — who have done something for the people, already. That’s what I say: When I go to Congress, I’m going to keep doing good things for people. I’m not going to stop, just because I’m elected. And I’ll owe nothing to anyone but the voters.
Flash, none of them are on the Blue America endorsement list this year, although all but Carney have asked for our endorsement again
you did it first, so, we felt comfortable giving it back.
thanks.
Is there anyone else who wants to explain why you are a progressive?
biden up—-
fighting bruce song..
the rising…
bet they had permission./s
Alan, which committee are you going to try to get on the hardest? And why?
Interesting that they would choose Springsteen.
The song I’d most like to be able to use: The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”
Ethanol from corn was the worst pick, more water, more fertilizer, Sugar Beets would have been a much better choice and would not have increased the cost of chicken, pork and beef. I hope you can get this changed after you are elected to Congress! (30% of our corn for 3% of our fuel)
(bet in about ten minutes you’ll have more…
i’m taping it.)
Alan, why have you only raised less than $5000 from local constituents? I understand your populist approach, but your self-financing seems to contradict this.
Carney! *spit*
What committee? You know, I have two elections to win before I need to think about that. What committee should I be on?
new here? welcome!
Truman Two
Thank you for your answer, that would be a good first step, the question remains how to enforce responsibility on the purveyors of propaganda and lies. Not one should retain access to either airwaves or printing press. No country where the press is professionally accountable has such an ongoing record of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Your goal is to be counted among the political elite, I wish you luck in getting there and more importantly, the persuasion to alter the nations direction among your peers.
I don’t agree with your numbers at all, but the truth is that it’s not easy to raise money from our people, when they are living from paycheck to paycheck, and may be losing their houses. Only two of my four primary opponents have raised more money, and both of them have taken more money from Republicans than from Democrats. (Because they are really Republicans, not Democrats, but that’s another story.)
I’ve spent this year fighting war profiteers, not begging special interests for money. I think the time was well-spent.
commerce
health and human services
or whatever your focus.
(the rising is redemption, overcoming, joining together.)
yes, I am new here. Thank you. I am from Orlando, and came across some posts regarding this event so I thought I would listen in. I’m not as progressive as Alan, but open to hear his views.
Another Truman Commission? Amen to that.
The one that locks up Republicans and war profiteers. Judiciary?
Alan, would you mind answering my question about local support? It seems that you have spent a lot of money, but have little local support. I know judging that based on contributions is probably wrong, but how else can we judge that and ensure we’re not throwing away our vote?
Welcome to firedoglake, miss20921!
Thanks for being open to hear my views, or anyone else’s. I’m open to hearing your views, too. That’s part of what it to me, to be a progressive.
Thanks for the welcome.
I’ve been reading the comments you seem pretty good on the issues I’m satisfied, so uh just how are you doing in your race?
Interesting point about ethanol. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that Brazil’s ethanol economy relies on corn at all, does it?
A grandfather, born in 1870’s, vacationed in Hawaii in early 60’s, thought the most beautiful people were those of the islands. Hard to hold narrow-mindedness as right when you are taught that it isn’t. It is all in the teaching, one either has good teachers, or they do not.
