The thing I like most about Obama picking Biden is he’s got sharp elbows and he’s not afraid to throw them. Remember last May when Chimpy went to Israel and compared Barack Obama to Neville Chamberlain? Here’s what Biden said:
"This is bullshit. This is malarkey. This is outrageous. Outrageous for the president of the United States to go to a foreign country, sit in the Knesset … and make this kind of ridiculous statement,” Biden said angrily in a brief interview just off the Senate floor.
Still pissed off, he added later:
“This is the same president, who talks about appeasement, the same one who asks me to get on a plane and talk to Qaddafi,” Biden said. “The same president who made a deal with Qaddafi. He writes letters, ‘Dear Mr. Chairman’ to Kim Jong Il.
“He oughta get a life here … Under George W. Bush’s watch, Iran, not freedom has been on the march … They’re a lot closer to the bomb… He calls Maliki our guy … Whose policy produced that? Whose watch was that? … Iran’s proxy Hezbollah is on the ascendancy. Don’t take my word for it, look at NIE … Afghanistan, Pakistan, Al Qaeda is stronger now.
“We should take zero backseat to this pres, talking about appeasement. … Under him, Israel is less safe.”
That’s pretty damn good stuff. And check out this smackdown of McSame and Lieberman.
The idea that John [McCain] and Joe [Lieberman] are going to eliminate any vestige of Iranian influence in Iraq, bless me father for I have sinned. Are they unaware of a border that has existed there for millennium? Are they unaware of the fact that our guy, Maliki is inviting Ahmadinejad to Baghdad and kissing him on both cheeks, literally not figuratively. Are they unaware of the fact that this government in Iraq feels compelled to visit Tehran to explain what it is that they are attempting to do with a long-term security agreement?
And check out Biden on Cheney:
"Every single person out there that is of any consequence knows the vice president doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I can’t be more blunt than that," Biden said. "He is yet to be right one single time on Iraq."
Biden’s mocking contempt of the Bush administration ’s failures will be just what the doctor ordered for this campaign. Not that Obama can’t throw a punch — we’ve seen especially last week that he can. But Biden seems to really relish verbal combat, especially on foreign policy.
If there was a man who was made to for the attack dog role of veep on the stump, it’s Biden. I’ve no doubt he’ll be better in that role than Lieberman (ack) or Edwards.

I like a Veep pick with sharp elbows and enough of pair to throw ‘em around a little.
Eventually, though, he *is* gonna cause a shit-storm somewhere between now and November 4.
Ya just know it.
Naturally, the GOP counter Biden’s bluntness with faux outrage and perpetual offense.
Like all bullies, they turn into crybabies the minute someone punches them in the nose. About damn time.
He managed to marginalize Rudy Guiliani at a time he was actually doing pretty well with his “a noun, a verb, and 9-11″ and it was nothng but straight down from there for Rudy. If he can harness his tongue, he is like bringing a gun to a knife fight – because he is smart, too. The appalling bankruptcy bill notwithstanding, Obama could have done a LOT worse.
Not to disagree…but I am so glad for 2 people who can talk. VP Dick doesn’t and W can’t, or at least “legibly”. So this is quite refreshing. As we have seen, McC. can’t either; how odd.
Attack! every hour, every day, don’t let up on the thugs who are running and ruining our country. Biden is a good one to do it. I say huzzah!
You mean that there’s a chance I won’t have to wince in shame every time the president of The United States speaks? And the same for the V.P.?
Not sure I’ll know how to act….
As I said last night, Biden will attack back with a 30 minute sound bite.
The McBush/Rove strategy is to monopolize the media coverage with dumbshit accusations against Obama- forcing him to spend his air time on defense. Biden may turn the tables. We’ll see.
We can certainly hope; at least we know the MAD “What me Worry?” Guy will be gone. I swear I thought he was drunk last week; my friend tells me he was just born that way.
I have loved the Letterman Great Presidential Speeches; “Fool me once, etc.” O what to miss.
And Giuliana was the only candidate who would have been worse than McCain who was viable.
I think Senator Biden got a great start today, talking about how John McCain doesn’t have the problems the rest of us talk about around the kitchen table, because he doesn’t know which of his seven kitchen tables to sit down at.
It’s a great start to a class-based campaign, which this country badly needs.
Feeling the Joementum?
I was trying to figure out my reaction to it all and I remember in 2000 trying to justify the choice of the other Joe in my head. It took contortions but I did—then.
Time will tell.
I suspect Cheney, Bush, and McCain are coherent enough when speaking privately, surrounded by their peers. What the don’t do well is ACT. Any expression from them of concern for average Americans, or American values is a total pretense and they’re not good enough actors to make it seem sincere.
I thought he was drunk last week; my friend tells me he was just born that way.
I think W oughta have to pass a breath test before he’s allowed to
speakleave his room…Time will tell.
I like Biden in a target-rich environment…
Digg!
Slightly off topic but Joe’s call-out to his drop dead gorgeous wife should be getting much more commentary. Yes, she is a doll but unlike McSame, Obama and Biden have no problem praising their beautiful wives. Hot husbands live and I love it!
(Gentlemen, Rev your engines. Where is Peterr? We could have a three-Rev thread!)
Hi Deb, hi Bev!
Makes sense; they don’t know the language.
Jayt, I also thought Mcc. was high/drugged at the Saddleback scene; pressured, loud speech…almost like he couldn’t stop or modulate. Awful
I’m sure you will behave with your usual decorum :)
I winced at that, considering what happened to Joe’s first wife. But if he’s over it and can say that, I guess I should be too….
I was lukewarm on Biden as a potential nominee but he’s won me over. Every would-be candidate brings along some baggage but I think his positives clearly outweigh his negatives. It might also be worth noting that many of the naysayers wouldn’t be happy with any VP choice, or with the candidate at the top of the ticket, for that matter.
Gloria Borger should not be on teevee. She adds less than zero than any/all discussions.
OT. ecahn – i just read something that reminded me of you. well, actually a question you asked during the book salon with wes clark. the article is from 1999 and by george kenney:
my bold.
Peterr likely is writing a sermon; that’s a Rev. Saturday night ;) Thanks
“Decorum” is my middle name….
Why has Biden got such a gorgeous wife, or should I simply read his wiki?
Hi Teddy.
As for popcorn, I’m eating some now—small white kernal expensive “Amish” popcorn. Small pieces but very tender and hull-less. Just got it the other day. It will be a long popcorn season. I may have to get lots more.
Only Biden knows TP but I for one think men/husbands/significant others need to give a bit of praise to their better halves. Joe’s call-out to his gorgeous wife was worthy and not just because she is a pretty gal but a huge part of his being on stage today.
I started to add “oh, gawd” but decided not to since you can’t see my face. Didn’t want to insult you.
More Biden on McCain:
As others have said, Obama could have made much worse choices. I just hope Joe comes out this aggressively every single day.
The “show text” feature does not work any longer. Anybody heard any scoop on the return of the feature announcing new comments?
Biden’s had 35 years to accept what happened and most of us only learned recently about his family tragedy. Having said that, I didn’t draw a correlation between that compliment today and what happened to his first wife until reading your comment just now.
Do you think that has always been the case? I used to enjoy her when she was a more regular on Washington Week; she was certainly less affected.
He’s a decnt if slickedback looking dude.
My point isn’t (really) Mme. Biden’s looks but Joe making sure to show some public affection to her. McSame can’t even walk hand-in-hand with the woman that has paid for 3+ decades of his political career.
Just finished mine a little while ago. Normally like to have them done by early afternoon on Sat. but Board retreat all day. Have to get back in the groove after a quiet and restful summer.
Why has Biden got such a gorgeous wife,
Same reason that a dog licks its…
Oh wait, “decorum” is my middle name… *g*
I don’t care who McCain picks for a VP, because whoever it is….is gonna get a right cross, a knee kick to the stomach, and a V8 juice bonk to the forehead by Biden! Bah hahahahahahaha! I can’t wait.
You don’t have to, or you got your chores out of the way early?
What I really like about you selise is that when I pass you the ball, you really run with it. Now if we could only get another 9 players, we’d have a helluva football team!
ANy wife who is willing to go through the torture of a prez campaign deserves kudos and a large diamond every day.
Borger can sometimes be objective but she now seems to go for some kind of toe-the-line fair&balanced yipyap. I too thought she was OK on WW. Speaking of WW, I hope none of you firepups caught Gwen on this week’s episode. Every 2nd word was Rezko, Rezko, Rezko. To think she will be moderating a debate. Warning signs should be put up NOW!
I’ve noticed that Ds treat their wives better than Rs.
My setting is a little more relaxed as I do hospital worship. But what really did it…I missed last week, so already had one. And, sometimes it is early; that’s a gift.
I loved it when he said that and it reminded me of my own parents who are in their 60’s, have been married for almost 50 years (got married young), and still look at each other as if they’re in the beginning stages of their marriage! My Dad would have said something similar if it was him on the stage today. Without my mother by his side all these years and vice versa, I don’t think either one of them would be as happy as they are today.
I have heard that the code is still being tweaked, and also hope that we may sometime soon see the return of features we learned to love, as well as Oxdown.
I wonder if Mitt Romney has taken himself out of contention, now that Biden will be his opponent in the VP debate. That one would be fun, wouldn’t it?
Gwen will moderate the Veep debate, iirc. As a Villager, she is in awe of Biden.
I confess that I’m not concerned about the attractiveness of their wives, however I think the fact that Biden and Obama both married intelligent, accomplished women reflects well on their own character. No disrespect intended to other candidates, Fred Thompson’s wife might also be very bright and accomplished for all I know.
at least she’s doing the Veep debate where presumably Rezko won’t come up—or shouldn’t.
Very likely. I just liked Biden giving his counterpart a public compliment (bonus Joe added the Doctorate). Some woman have no problem with being called gorgeous in public. My current beautiful gal hates it when I tell anyone how spectacular and real she is. Maybe it is a sign of male ego to do so but women that make us (men) and vice-vera, feel good should not be offended.
lol. best laugh in several days. thanks. *g*
as long as it isn’t a contest about hair.
Judging from her AmEx bill, Cindy probably agrees with you.
That’s good ’cause Biden won’t take any bs from her.
Yeah, that was the best smack in the primary. On either side.
What a beautiful comment.
wonder if Mitt Romney has taken himself out of contention, now that Biden will be his opponent in the VP debate. That one would be fun, wouldn’t it?
I would pay good money to see/hear Biden’s response if Willard brought out his “Double-Gitmo” position…
I hope so but Gwen seemed to enjoy bringing Rezko up ad nauseam. I don’t trust her.
Watching Biden on Shuster’s show now — I like it when he talks about McCain “signing on to Bush’s scheme to privatize Social Security” as well as his many other call-outs linking McCain tightly to Bush. Tweety said earlier today that Biden handcuffed McCain to Bush. I’d say that’s true.
Teddy, what did Biden say that caused wincing?
I know his 1st died in a nasty car accident (right), but that has surely been a couple of decades. He shouldn’t have to not compliment the 2nd just because she had a predecessor….
If McCain picks RGJoe, we will have four sitting Senators on the tickets. Does anyone know the last time we even had two Senators atop the tickets? People always refer to Nixon/Kennedy, but Nixon was Veep in 1960.
Guess I have to do some homework.
email me your mailing address & when I finally get the technique for preserves down pat, I’ll send you a sample.
KO had a pretty good segment last night about how by nominating Mitt, McCain would essentially be doubling down on the privileged aristocrats theme.
He called Jill “drop-dead gorgeous.”
It was a stupid comment on my part. I withdraw it. His compliment was well-intentioned and well-received. I shouldn’t have cast aspersions on it.
I find your comment offensive. Jill Biden came into Joe’s life 4 or 5 years after his wife and daughter died in a car crash. His two sons were severely injured in the accident, and this was right after he had been elected for his first term in the senate. When he was inducted into the senate, the ceremony was held by his two sons’ bedsides in the hospital instead of in the chambers of the senate. After that time, he drove home every night and raised those boys by himself until he met Jill.
When he got married to Jill, she insisted that the boys come on their honeymoon with them. Since that time she raised them and had a daughter with Joe.
She has two master’s degrees and a doctorate, and continues to teach in public schools, and is an activist for education and breast cancer.
So – - what was your question? . . .
Before or after he makes McShame so totally angry that he shows his temper tantrum publicly. I’ve been thinking about the effectiveness of Biden’s blows from his speech this morning. I’ve been thinking how they contrast with McShame’s constant smacking Obama around that he’s been doing for the last few weeks. I’ve come to the conclusion that a.) McSame’s punches sound mean-spirited and small-minded and b.) that, although Biden’s blows seem pretty devastating, they don’t sound mean-spirited to me, because they have the ring of truth to them. I believe that is a winning difference. I hope that pans out.
Don’t know much about Ifil, as NewsHour i s m u c h t o o s l o w for me to watch. Is she one of those blacks who gave up their race to get ahead?
Good point TP. Biden has experience and history and knows McSame better than anyone. I think he will rip him to shreds. If not he’ll at least push him close to the edge. McSame will be taking the fall for the bush admin failuires. Maybe not fair but better for all our future(s).
David Shuster does not take any bullshit from that racist Pat Buchanan. He talks right over him, and cuts Buchanan off. I like it.
KO had a pretty good segment last night about how by nominating Mitt, McCain would essentially be doubling down on the privileged aristocrats theme.
yeah, I’ve changed from rooting for Bobby JindalWho? to hoping he picks Willard….
Joe has always seemed to have a talent for twisting the knife with a twinkle in his eye.
wow. would love some. honored. ygm.
Seems so. I’ve read that she is one of Condi’s very, very, very close friends.
She was killed in 1972. How long was he expected to mourn?
Swopa must be ecstatic! I know I am!
Luv that R=privileged white man meme.
I think there is a chance that the question was offensive. But certainly no one was disrespecting either wife. As I see it.
Good night all. B
Thx. That explains a lot.
So sorry to hear that. Thanks
He won’t get the nod but Jindal would have tremendous comedy potential. I can imagine a mash-up of the VP debate interspersed with clips from The Exorcist.
Night, RB.
Me, too. I really like Biden.
Willard would bring great fodder for the comics as well. You can’t find much emptier suits than the ones he wears. With or without the funny underoos.
G’night Bev.
Joe Biden was my Senator in Delaware from the time I moved there in 1968, and left in 1981. He is considered a true son of this tiny state. Everyone in Wilmington knows everyone else! Can’t hide a political thing there. And I’m excited to see them together. A little hope, finally?
doc kirk upstairs with nuked food
I asked her about her objectivity covering Condi during a WaPo chat one time, considering their friendship, and wow did she explode. I was amazed she took the question, and amazed at her response. Can’t find the link now.
see my 65, please….
Did anyone else get an e-mail from Richardson saying that he had been asked by Obama to make a speech on foreign policy and diplomacy on Wednesday?
Hmmmmmm?
Night RD.
Just the visual contrast between Mr. GQ and Rumpled-stilts-kin at the RNC could be pretty amusing.
Youre’ welcome RB. Gwen’s eyes twinkle when she can rip a Dem for no freakin’ reason. I doubt she gets her talking points from a fax machine. I’m no Daily Howler but I suggest her questions and demeanor be closely watched at the upcoming debate she ‘moderates’.
Yes it would be fun! In fact, whoever McCain picks for VP is gonna get a V8 juice bonk to the forehead by Biden, even if it’s Newt Gingrich, Joe Lieberman, or Dick Cheney. ;-)
I think they should have asked Huckabee to speak. He stayed in the race a long time.
Thnx for the back up TP. I think Gwen is getting off, lightly.
Thanks Moeman! I could tell today that Joe has looked at wife Jill every single day of their marriage in the same way. ;-)
lol. All the money they have and they still can’t dress him up to look like his clothes fit right. Oh yeah, he was a POW so that excuses it or explains it, or something . . .
Their answer to everything—POW
BO’s answer to everything—10 houses (and counting)
which will prevail? Show of hands?
Are they giving Huck the cold shoulder? He came in 2nd, seems like a dumb thing to do. They could at least give him an afternoon slot or let him play a bass solo or something.
If Barack Obama wins the Presidency, I fully expect Gwen Ifill to become the host of Meet the Press.
How many houses does Mitt add to the count?
last I heard 4 I think.
I wonder if McThuselah can remember what address he used to register to vote.
It does seem a little odd that the McCain’s put hundreds of thousands of dollars on their credit cards every month but John apparently still buys all his suits off the rack.
Huffpo is on it. “At least 4″
The Romneys currently have a home in Massachusetts, a home in New Hampshire and a home in Utah. If the La Jolla deal goes …
I heard he had 5.
Mitt owns six or seven houses and lots of rental property. His personal fortune is over $200 million and he didn’t even marry a beer baroness, which might not have gone over all that well with the latter-day saints crowd.
No, but McShame was willin’ to pimp out said wife to the hell’s angels bikers at Sturgis to score political points.
the rack at GoodWill I think. He looks messy all the time.
Well, she is a villager, so thats nice.
McC*nt cannot walk hand in hand with his wife because he yanked her arm so hard, she is in a sling…
“the rack” aha. Another torture reference. Remember, he was a POW. And he was tortured, as long as you don’t use the current administration’s definition. Then it no longer becomes a campaign issue.
Hey, Teddy… Did you see the speech Biden gave today? I think “Someone” read your post to Obama … They really did a great job marrying mcCain to McBush.
Hey, There is serious shit ahead for Biden.
We all know John McCain had a serious diet deficiency for 5 1/2 years while he was being tortured. I mean, who the heck would give a person they were torturing a wholesome, brain and body sustaining diet in between torture sessions? That’s right, no-one!
So it is quite possible Joe Biden would be seen as attacking as a partially disabled U.S. veteran (So certified by the U.S. Government).
What is becoming increasingly evident, before the campaign really even gets started, is that “He’s The Maverick”, not because he has different views from his party, but because he FORGETS he previous positions and statements, and his party’s position. (”John McCain does NOT speak for the McCain Campaign.”)
A man who has SO Many houses may forget the number because he has soooo many houses. That is REMOTELY possible.
But THERE IS NO AMERICAN of sound mind, who CAN’T tell you what brand of car he drives.
It is more than John McCain’s body which is disabled.
Ladies and Gentlemen, John McCain is mentally impaired as a result of his tortures and horrendous diet while a P-O-W.
I think the Republican convention will need to declare John McCain a 100% disabled Vietnam vet, and send him back to one of his 7, 8, 9 or 10 homes.
A different form of affection (?) but one meant only to get votes. It behooves me that the media didn’t rip McShame for this disgusting sexist act. Yeah some male newsers could get a giggle but where were the female reporters denouncing McSame for pimping his wife’s breasts, on stage, in public, to a drunken crowd, of losers?
I hope McInsane picks the Mitster. They will have at least 13 houses at the same time folks are struggling to keep ONE house.
I liked the recurring theme of the Bush/McCain policies. I hope it doesn’t cause Cheney to sulk (as if anyone could tell).
If they trot out the POW meme to counter every criticism between now and November, I think we’ll all understand the definition of “torture.”
Sexism is still OK. Or if it’s not exactly “ok” it’s even less OK to speak out against it. Then you’re shrill. Then you lose your job.
So far they are batting a thousand on that issue.
The disrespect McCain shows for his spouse would be shameful under any circumstances but when you contrast it with the respect and admiration Biden and Obama demonstrate for their partners… it is a contest in which John McCain is clearly a loser.
I see your point Margot but I cannot understand how/why the supposed intellectual, we’ll-tell-you-what-you-need-to-hear media let this issue get by them. What McSame did on stage, whilst standing beside his wife was, in the context of a man seeking the Presidency, one of the sickest things I’ve ever seen.
Think PTSD. Untreated.
—
BTW, is anyone else having problems with logging in? It doesn’t recognize it the first time.
Whenever TradMed talks about Romney’s “experience in the private sector as a contrast to Biden’s lifetime in the US Senate,” as Craig Crawford just did, we must counter: “Romney is a Privateer. He is a modern-day corporate pirate, not a businessman in the sense Americans think of. He is a Buccaneer, not a wealth-builder for anyone except himself and his fellow hedge-funders.”
aka Alpha-Republican
IOKIYAR. Had it been a dem, it would have been treated the way we’re treating the many mansions issue.
No, I logged in from my cookie.
PTSD. Hmmm.
Was McCain ever treated pschologically?
If so, how long ?
Can the FOIA get get McCain’s mental tests and status before and after treatment ?
Yup. If Mittens get selected the media could maybe ask him about McSame supporting DHL bailing out on 8000 some jobs. Mitt has been known to clean house but it would be kinda fun fun to see if he’d even answer the question about outsourced jobs.
HIs experience as gov. of MA can be described in one word. Vapid.
hey,j. Sure hope so!
According to the NYT, he might have been debriefed by a lobbyist but then that topic was ruled out of bounds.
medical records are or should be off limits. But remember when he “allowed” access to them to the press. 3000 pages looksee for an hour with no copies of anything avaliable, no cell phones, blackberries, etc.
Hiding much?
Very likely but a house versus a human being being treated like cattle? The shallowness of the GOP-bought media is a huge problem.
And that’s news to us?
All they care about is access. They would sell out their own mothers and grandchildren to maintain access. Gotta have those cocktail weenies.
To us political hounds no. To the regular viewer? eesh
~~~
I have enjoyed the tête-a-tête this evening fellow pups. Bonsoir mes ami(e)s.
cya Moeman
Anyone watching CNN? Question from a viewer just came in: Is the 3:00 A.M. message sent by the Obama campaign a swipe at Hillary Clinton for her 3:00 A.M. ad? Nobody seems to have thought about that!
It’s 10 P.M.
Does John McCain remember what his positions were this morning?
That Wascal Waverick!!
Was McCain ever dropped on his head when he was just a baby Maverick?
We know he was McNasty Maverick by his time in high school.
Yes, I got that same email. What do you make of it?
This is going to be one of those posts I hope comes out right, and is not misunderstood.
I’ve been thinking that BO has a problem taking the raw meat approach to McCain and the Republicans because of racial/cultural considerations. It is one thing to be very well spoken, obviously well educated and informed as to issues and all, it is another to confront what happens when the image is of an aggressive black man runs up against a voter who on one hand understands personal economic self interest in Democratic terms — but culturally remains caught in racist attitudes and beliefs that include fear of Blacks. I think when Barack talked about his grandmother, who had devoted herself to raising him, and who obviously loved him, also telling him that she experienced fear meeting some black people on the street — he was identifying this phenonema. He didn’t doubt her love — but he understood that she had learned “the fear” and irrationally, it still remained.
I think we all would profoundly wish that this would disappear, and I suspect for younger people raised in environments where racist expression is socially sanctioned in many situations, it is infact becoming less of a factor. And if Barack Obama becomes President, I believe we will accomplish a good deal toward this end. But successfully electing him involves negotiating ourselves around this set of realities, not ignoring them. And in many ways, asking Barack Obama to be overly red meat aggressive in attacking Bush/Cheney and McCain is also asking him to heighten that irrational and perhaps unconscious fear that in the end might lead all too many Democrats who understand their rational economic self interests, to vote their fears which may be quite sub-conscious.
Would that we would not have to consider such — but racism is real, and getting it out of our American Culture has been a very long term proposition. It is profoundly rewarding that so many of today’s younger people are seeming more free of it all. But as a white someone who spent ten years in the 1960’s working in the Civil Rights Movement, I also know that the only times the movement enjoyed better than 50% support during the protest period between 59 and 65, was when the TV News carried video of police dogs attacking children. Less than 7% of the white 18-30 age group in the early 60’s actually participated in any civil rights activity or organizations — perhaps more supported generally and could not be activists, but it was really a small part of that white generation. Today those who were in their 20’s in the 1960’s are in their 60’s and 70’s — and those are precisely the demographic with which Barack Obama is having difficulty. They were the bystanders in the days of “the movement” and because they never took sides, they never confronted their cultural fears. And those fears still determine how they can overlook their economic interests, and irrationally vote for McCain.
My generation in the civil rights movement accomplished much, but it was limited to changing the laws which favored discrimination and segregation to laws which made racial discrimination and segregation illegal if done in the marketplace or by government. We really did not address private beliefs, and we had limited success with attitudes. (Just look at the way “driving while Black” and complaints of police brutality remain huge issues.) In fact we even had a slogan in those days that was dismissive, “If you aren’t part of the solution, you are part of the problem.” Such a slogan did not get at that part of my generation who were bystanders.
So I am delighted with the Biden Selection, largely because I hope it means Biden can do the needed and necessary Red Meat against Bush/Cheney and McCain — and allow Barack Obama to remain slightly less aggressive in ways that would call out the “irrational fears” of the aggressive black man. In no way do I believe he should refrain from being aggressive on issues, or if he is attacked, but given the demographics of a Presidential Election, I know we cannot succeed if the “fears” dominate, and economic self interests in the Democratic agenda irrationally are diminished. Asking Obama to “get rough” is, in my mind, asking him to give up potential voters who otherwise would be with the Democratic Agenda.
We have never had an election such as this where the raw psychology of racism is so much a core matter. If we win it, we probably end a good deal of this phenonema that has haunted this country since our founding. If we don’t appreciate the nuance of what we are attempting, I hate to think of the consequences.
This year is the 60th anniversary of Hubert Humphrey’s “Sunshine” speech at the Democratic Convention in Philly, 1948 — first convention after we understood Hitler’s “Final Solution” and a few months after Truman had ordered the integration of the Military. Humphrey mentioned neither as a specific, but everyone understood his meaning. “Come out from under the dark shadow of State’s Rights into the bright sunshine of Human Rights.” And the Southern Dixiecrats all walked out and formed their own party, and nominated Strom Thurmond — and it was only when Bloggers protested Trent Lott’s admiration for Thurmond’s segregationist agenda a few years ago that the media noticed, and Lott lost his leadership position. And the media did a piss poor job of telling that history. I don’t remember one major media that actually linked it back to Humphrey’s Civil Rights platform plank and speech. But guess what — it was that effort which Truman had to accept, that won him that election, and kept the Southern Democratic Racist Committee Chairs in control of the Senate in 1948. Why? Because the Black Migration for defense jobs in the North — where Blacks could vote — during World War II, changed the demographics, and the polls based on the 1940 census didn’t pick up on that vast change.
We are part of a profound progressive elaboration since that event in 1948. We need to be very smart about how we understand it, and how we move it forward.
After years of being a devoted viewer of the Friday night lineup of Newshour followed by WW, I quit watching entirely a couple of years ago. I could no longer stand to hear David Brooks find some mitigating, according to him, aspect of each step in the systematic tunneling from within to subvert the missions of all agencies in the executive branch and hearing people who knew better temporize with evil over and over again.
I viewed Biden as one of the most experienced primary candidates that did not get much attention.
I think Biden can be assigned responsibility for Guliani in the primaries taking the spiral nose dive into the asphalt without being able to pull himself out.
I thought Obama would pick him for Secretary of State and that he would make one of the greatest in American history. As Veep, Biden will be a excellent checkmate to McCain in dispelling the GOP’s maniacal fabrications. As a Veep should during election.
A great asset and strong advisor for Obama if he makes it. Choosing what he needs to Govern if he gets it vs someone that might bring him votes in a state. Very wise choice from this young presidential (Green) candidate. Unlike McCain, who will most likey choose a Romney because he brings his money and a possibility of what Romneys father might bring in votes from being Governer of Michigan. Which was a long time ago.
I now need to get me a Obama-Biden T shirt or something.
It is something to be excited about. Ans who knows, those nilly nervous nanny voters out there might see Biden as security for Obama and touch the Diebold machine for Obama, eh?
Rarely has a Gooper been laid so low by so little. I was proud of Biden that day.
