I’m off to Denver today for the convention so light posting. It’s my first time, and there’s a vague feeling of dis-ease about the impending spectacle that Marc Cooper shares:
Obama might be my candidate, but the Democrats are certainly not my party. The liberal think tanks, the unions, the usual-suspect progressives are all going to be in a lathered frenzy of panels, presentations, talks and seminars foaming in and around the convention center, and convincing themselves they are now somehow driving the party. They might as well be scheduled for Sunday night on Mars. The real power behind the Democrats are the nearly 60 corporations that are coughing up the bulk of the $55 million Denver tab, scooping up in the transaction much more than Premier Packages and martinis and shrimp with Speaker Nancy. The most powerful economic and political forces in America are blatantly buying even more political access and influence. And the Democrats are only too happy to sell it. Giving unlimited bucks to so-called "convention host committees" is the Grand Canyon of campaign finance loopholes, with many donations not even having to be reported until a few days before the November election. There’s insufficient space to parse through the entire list of DNC ‘08 corporate sponsors. But next week, while you’re watching some Dem or another rail from the podium about the sinister influence of lobbyists and special interests, you might want to keep handy this minilist of convention sponsors and a few of the issues on which they’ve been lobbying. With thanks to the Rocky Mountain News and the Center for Responsive Politics, here’s just a smidge:. AT&T, Qwest, Comcast, Motorola: revisions in the 1996 Telecom Act, wireless, digital TV and broadband regulation, tax policy, pension reform and FISA. AT&T was among the primary beneficiaries of the bill providing immunity against prosecution for domestic spying, approved only with Democratic support.
I’m far less cynical about the "usual suspect progressives" and actually a) don’t believe they’re deluded about their role in the party and b) have some hope that change is possible, but the sight of AT&T and Exxon Mobil in their sky boxes making their Congressional monkeys jump for campaign cash is going to be kind of hard to take. The Sunlight Foundation’s "Party Time" blog is tracking all the big corporate shindigs, and there are going to be hundreds.
(Of course, Cooper was part of the Pajamas Media empire, so I’m not sure where the high horse comes from, but whatever.)
I’m actually more excited about the Republican convention. Between watching Rudy lisp his way through the keynote, listening to Lieberman flim-flam the GOP and the Ron Paul counter-convention, the Republicans are far more willing to let the freak flag fly. And I won’t give a shit if AT&T is underwriting all their hookers.
Speaking of Republicans…yes, you pompous humorless windbag, it was a joke.

Don’t get yourself arrested!
Have a good trip.
And if you do get arrested just remember you’re in good company. Gandhi, King, Mandela, etc.
Since you’re now living in MD fox scent should be available in sporting goods stores, perhaps even in Denver. A few drops in an AC duct will take care of the skyboxes.
So a former Pajamas media hack is claiming that
What a clever way to fake the appearance of objectivity If Jane had not said Pajamas Media
I might have been fooledI might have thought he was just some regular MSM troll.Instead of a hardcore GOPer, this guy has half a brain we should watch him, he might be the future of the Republican party.
I have forgotten how long it has been since the GOP has almost impressed me.
Marc Cooper would need a ladder to get up on a high horse, but that shouldn’t stop him.
Ha about AT&T footing the bill for the hookers. What would they underwrite for the Dems, in that same vein?
Bail money is cash I don’t think most jails have moved to accepting credit cards yet.
Have I told you lately how much I love the way your mind works? *g* Do they make eau de skunk as well?
Southern Dragon @3 -
#7’s for you………are the techies EVER gonna make the glitches go away and get “reply” back up to speed?
If you catch one s/he’ll be more than happy to provide you with a sample. Don’t know how effective it would be on a bunch of skunks, though.
Been there; done that; don’t wanna go back again.
Nice of Cooper to include Qwest beside AT&T in order to tar the one major telecom that refused to trash the Constitution with the one that was the ringleader.
I think they call that one guilt by association.
Yeah, if they are like my dogs, they love the smell. It is only when the spray gets in their eyes that there is a problem. There is an idea in there somewhere.
Awww, no sense of adventure.
I’ve seen fox scent clear out one whole wing of a high school. *g*
If AT&T is underwriting, would that be for phone-sex only?
OT: There had to be a catch. Per Voice of America News:
Emphasis mine.
Phone sex:
Can you feel me now? How about now?
Marc why set yourself up for humiliation like this Jane or some other blogger if they have the free time and think that you are worth the bother can easily take your post
And then compare the numbers to the GOP convention. Also Obama leads McCain in both real people giving money and small donations.
Trying to paint a Democrat as a tool of Corporate money in this election cycle is a losing task.
If you are going to tell a lie Marc it helps if you tell one people will believe.
Just because the GOP literally owns the media Romney Clearchannel , GE NBC and Reagen, etc and you can flood voters with message does not mean they will buy your crap.
You have to sell the voters the dogfood that they like no media campaign can get a dog to eat food they don’t like.
And right now Marc the GOP tastes like boiled Spinach.
Good luck, Jane. Remember to take lots of disinfecting wipes. After some of the hands you may have to shake, those things are a life-saver.
If I may be so bold, I’d like to share a little ditty I just put up on Glenn’s thread about the Right’s mewling in 2004 about Kerry being a gigolo and their silence about McCain fitting that description just as well:
I’m hoping someone with some musical talent and a video camera can put a Youtube together on something like this.
800 numbers will be on the speed dial in hotel rooms
And who put it there?
That’s funny.
I was starting to wonder if I was in the Cone.
How you?
veepstakes vs houses this morning…which will consume today’s media buzz? Obama folks still have the opportunity to point out that at least Barack paid for his one house, he wasn’t a kept man living off his wife and his triple-federal-dippin’.
Ah, yes, the high life of the superrich and famous McCains.
I heard something from stepanopolis this morning that made my heart skip some beats
george made some predictions and gore was among them
even though I can’t believe gore would take the spot but man, my brain started to work overtime
Ralph Reed kept saying Rezko Rezco
Ralph Reed kept saying Rezko! Rezco!
I hereby exericse my rights under Amendment 5 of the United States Contitution.
I be fine and should have been out the door half hour ago. Can ya tell I ain’t into goin’ to work today.
Reply to Elliot@26
Ralph Reed! Ralph Reed! Ralph Reed!
It’s too early in the day for me to watch/listen to Reed. I have to run the gauntlet with a bunch of administrators today, so I have to keep my blood pressure low. Priorities and all. When I get back, I might be able to handle to ickies.
i wish.
in recent years the Rs have been worse, but that doesn’t mean the Ds don’t play that game too. :(
Duvet Day?
If it wasn’t payday I’d call in well.
Yesterday afternoon there was a visitor on one of the threads there was someone saying the same thing. What is the name of the developer that made all the bucks off of the land swap deal in Arizona?
Go on, take the money and run.
Cute, I like it.
Which raises a question. Would the correct answer from McCain have been:
No one told me it was a Duvet Day….
Speaking of Republicans…yes, you pompous humorless windbag, it was a joke.
And Jane…. these yaahoos just don’t know how to deal with snark do they?
if you count some houses he has on the same estate, (compexi?) then the number of homes he owns is in the teens
Have some fun, Jane!
And why is it legal for large shareholder owned companies to give away their money, instead of paying dividends to shareholders?
Been hangin’ out with the punster, have you? Gnome took care of Q.1
Q.2 -
We’ve been having especially bad problems this year with foxes going after turtle nests and no one seems to have come up with a really acceptable solution. Noticed a very heavy scent of skunk around one of the nests closest to me recently. Do you know if they are as likely to go after turtle eggs as foxes would be?
The distinction between “AT&T” and “US GOVERNMENT” no longer exists.
Consider them to be as “free market” as Fannie and Freddie, which have now effectively morphed into the new conglomerate soon to be known as “Sammie” (as in Uncle).
Your government is your landlord, your telephone company, your banker, your tax collector, your media provider, your jailer and your “protector.”
Halliburton relocated to Dubai and Bush is moving to Paraguay.
Surely we can count on McCain to track them to the Gates Of Hell.
cspan announcing the new things available during the convention on their site—
going to have all kinds of cameras, lots of video…
video clips, can now imbed them, and you can take clips from the video and just post that part…
and twitter accounts
all kinds of stuff.
sounds pretty cool.

Ah…. the sun just rose over the Siuslaw River ….. Time for a walk … brb..
forgot to say—that means speeches, too.
Howls of derisive laughter, Bruce!
“Surely we can count on McCain to track them to the gates of Hell”

I’m pretty sure we have to claim our own Duvet Days.
If it were up to me, I’d say yeah, go for it girl!
I’m heading out now, but let’s hear it for Duvet Days and Comfort Food. I think the next coupla months are going to require some of that!
(((Katy))
(and, thanks for that new term/concept)
thanks – sounds like it’s worth checking out
so morning yall……………….my McGIGGOLO makes more sense now…right?
CNN has a live feed on line in front of Bayh’s and Biden’s house. One could sit for hours watching if they wanted to postpone chores. The only reason I’m not placing my bets on Biden is because Obama is not always predictable. Please not Bayh!
Wait till we see the agreement. I knew that was the spin they were going to put on it, but I’ve also read (in Juan Cole, mostly) that the Iraqi governing parties really need to be able to tell their people the occupation is definitely ending, for domestic political purposes, and wouldn’t accept “probably.”
So let’s see what it says. I suspect the “conditions” will be pretty specific, rather than the usual vague “unless things aren’t going the way we like” that the administration has been claiming are the “conditions” for withdrawal they’ve been waiting for.
how………………..c o n v i e n e n t !
Today a learned where the Siuslaw River (pronounced sigh YOU slaw) is located.
Thanks to katymine and Wikipedia!

No, because the questioner was smart enough to ask how many he and Cindy own, not just him. And if he answered that with “I don’t know, they’re all in her name,” it wouldn’t be good with the “wives should submit to their husbands” base, plus it would be an open invitation to start banging on that “we’re not going to disclose Cindy’s financial records” that in a world where the press didn’t worship McCain would be a major story.
Corporations will clear out as soon as $hillary is booted. Change is the game.
Does anyone think that McBush has pulled the POW card ONE too many times yesterday and that little nugget is DOA for affect?
Both Parties are pretty much the same as far accepting Corporate largess, whether it is openly or covertly, at their respective Conventions. Brian Ross, of ABC News, has been dogging the story of the lavish parties the Corporations throw for the elite attendees of the Conventions.
I spent quite a bit of time looking for the 2004 episode of “NOW with Bill Moyers” which reported on a $600,000 B-day party for Nancy Pelosi. She was desperately trying to hide her face from the camera. Her actions said it all!
Here is the story about the Democratic Convention and here is the Republican counterpoint.
“The real power behind the Democrats are the nearly 60 corporations that are coughing up the bulk of the $55 million Denver tab.”
All of this talk about lobbyists and their influence on both sides, while true, reminds me a lot of the arguments in both 2000 and ‘04, when people said “What’s the difference? They’re both the same,” when asked whom they were voting for. It’s apparent to EVERYONE now (not just us) that there was a VERY big difference. I hate to see us echo this particular meme.
They eat just about anything so it wouldn’t surprise me.
I firmly believe that Nancy Pelosi should receive everything she bargained for.
That’s one of the reasons I will vote for whoever is running against her. Whoever.
Like gravity…… Self interest and follow the money. The Telelcom Acts 0f 96′ and 05′, COPE Act of 06, all gimmes to the Telelcoms from “asselelphants,” a sub-party comprised of both demorats and rethugs, beholding to corporate. FISA’s approval was determined long ago! So once the onion skin is peeled away, gravity dictates…..
Nice shoutout to the Boss.
I’ll see your Rezko, and raise you a KEATING FIVE.
Best: butyl mercaptan. This is the odorant added to natural gas, and it is readily available.
