Sure, John McCain may or may not have been confused about that cross in the dirt story. Just like he’s confused now about how many houses he owns.
But the intersection of both stories with the exquisitely named Orson Swindle is just too cozy to not raise some questions. For starters, in the Architectural Digest piece on McCain’s former Phoenix luxury home, look whose name turned up under a photo of a gloriously hand-carved mantlepiece:
The initials “MC,” for “McCain,” were hand-carved into a mantelpiece made in Guadalajara for the master bedroom. The black-and-white cat was a gift to Senator McCain on his election to the Senate from Orson Swindle, a fellow P.O.W. in North Vietnam.
Conveniently, 2005 was also when Mr. Swindle left the FTC and joined Hunton and Williams, a big DC shop which … shockingly … also does quite a bit of lobbying work. In fact, their lobbying money went UP starting in 2005 when McCain pal Swindle began working for them … and McCain was a senior member of the Senate Commerce Committee, having just finished his second stint as its chairman.
Coincidence that Hunton & Williams would hire McCain’s good ole buddy Orson — who is now serving as an adviser to the McCain campaign, according to his own Hunton & Williams bio, while also providing McCain with convenient alibi material on demand? And that their lobbying revenue would also, coincidentally I’m sure, increase at around the time that Swindle joined the firm?
For what clients do they lobby? A lot of prime client names in the bunch.
And I’m wondering how many of Orson Swindle and his firm’s clients just coincidentally had business before the Senate Commerce Committee at the time he happened to join the firm while his good ole buddy John McCain was a powerful senior member, having turned over the gavel to his good buddy and ethical powerhouse Ted Stevens in January of that year. Who wants to join me in a little digging?
Or perhaps one of the reporters tagging along on the McCain motorcade morning java jaunt could ask tomorrow if McCain bothers to get out of the car instead of sending a staffer in for his cappuccino.

Seems a bit too convenient, doesn’t it?
Seems a bit too convenient, doesn’t it?
Lotta “conveniences” and “coincidences” goin’ on with the McCrazy campaign…..
Hi Christy! Great find…as usual.
Hope all is well at Chez Redd.
DIGG This story, please. And while you’re at it, Howie has some Keating 5 info that needs digging, too.
How can you question McCain’s ethics? He was a POW!
What was that, you say. Keating Five? But he was a POW. He suffered terribly, he couldn’t possibly, having been a POW, be beholden to lobbyists.
Anyway, he was a POW, so there!
Never hang around with a guy named “Swindle” would be my advice.
I mentioned this downstairs, it’s a great point and I’m surprised nobody cought it before this
McManchurian Canidate …no?
12 houses………………….oy glad i dont have to clean them…he must have some tawny people to do it
deep olive, no papers?
What a great picture…the lives of Father Knows Best..
Rove, if he were working against McCain, would plant stories that McCain’s house help are mostly illegals. Too bad he’s not working against McCain now.
In the 90’s there was a state rep. from GA running for U.S. Congress, named Pat Swindle who went to jail for fraud and perjury, I believe. It was the first time that a was called by a research firm and one question asked “was I born again?” My answer was that my mom had a difficult delivery the first time and certainly wouldn’t want to repeat it. I wonder if Pat and Orson are related.
Could be- the guy’s from Georgia:
Grew up: Camilla, Ga.; raised by his grandmother and great-aunt.
Education: BA in industrial management from Georgia Institute of Technology,
1959; MBA from Florida State University, 1973.
Career: U.S. Marine Corps, 1955-1979. Retired as lieutenant colonel. Flew
205 missions in Vietnam, was shot down and spent six years in POW camp.
Awarded two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars and two Bronze Stars. Director
of the Georgia office of the Farmers Home Loan Association from 1981 to
1985. Director of the Economic Development Agency, part of the Department of
Commerce, 1985 to 1989. Executive director of Ross Perot’s United We Stand,
1992. Executive director of KCAA, a group of preschools in Hawaii, 1991 to
1992. Associate director of Empower America, 1993 to 1994.
Family: Married to second wife, Angela Williams. One son by his previous
marriage.
=======================
The Honorable Orson Swindle retired from the United States Marine Corps as a
Lt. Colonel. He is currently a Federal Trade Commissioner. During the Reagan
Admistration he served as Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of
Commerce.
and who’s 2 say they are not?
I think this should be “investigated”
inquireing minds want to know!
so there hippies :D
actually, there’s good information in this article from an Arizonan, natch. Including McKept took money from tribes
Gee, just like his friend Ralph Reed. Thanks
Thanks for the info. Small world two cheating swindles.
I just researched Pat and he spells his name differently swindall
This is more gearhead stuff which tends not to translate well to the throngs. Now if it involves a thong, well, that’s a whole other kettle of pesci.
I’m voting for Trading Cards
. . .all the lobbyists, homes, jets, falwell. . .y’all get the idea
Do look at the lovely photos in Architectural Digest linked above of the former Casa McCain — the hand-carved mantle is huge. One wonders if they left it for the new occupants or had it brought along to the double luxury condo pad?
Actally, they aren’t that close, unless there’s a swindle involved. The other kind…
Although Stevens is going to coast through his GOP primary here in Alaska next week, McSame is showing the lowest August numbers for a GOP Prez hopeful since Barry Goldwater.
Yeah, I was kind of being a smartass with that one. *g*
OT: This was just up at the Independent FWIW
http://www.independent.co.uk/n…..06192.html
Then McCain goes and makes a threat

couldn’t find anything on pat swindle yet.
bbl.
dmac, I went on local sources and he spells his name swindall. GA sure has some strange Christian politicians. They all seem to have legal problems.
Yeah. To the tune of $273K per year, apparently.
How much is the mortgage on your house?
Tell me again who’s an elitist?
BC
Yeah, we could send an email around with the subject, “McCain chooses Paris Hilton as Running Mate” … oh, wait…
Bob in HI
Back in the last century, where they both belong, Stevens and McCain were much closer ideologically. They both resisted the Gingrich crowd’s dismantling frenzy, and were both pro-choice back then.
As much trouble as Stevens is in now, it could have just as easily have landed on McCain for any of many bad acts he’s pulled. I think his handling of Indian Affairs was the most two-faced series of scams in the long, tawdry history of that very dismal Committee.
OT: Springsteen To Play at Obama Nomination Acceptance (?)
I didn’t see the POW cross story video, but looked up the transcript. Kinda incoherent and rambling, but it suggests that the guard drew the cross with his “handle”, whatever that means. You’d think that a military man would know that the ass end of a rifle is the stock. Maybe Mr. Swindle can clear that up as well.
But McCain is Airforce. Maybe they don’t know so much about rifles.
Bob in HI
did you say Springsteen is the VP nomination?
How about NAVY See his hat
McSame was Navy, Canoe U, auld school tie all the way. Which raises the question, “Why is a mustang marine pandering for him?”
now you’re talking
This is pretty cool:
Navy, Not Air Farce
Got to keep AIPAC happy
What size carbon footprint for one fucking capuccino?
Umm, a reform rabbi is highly unlikely to make AIPAC happy.
o/t
. . .the righties just can’t help themselves – they McHate him
Pat Buchanan no likey Scheunemann:
not linking – it’s from World Nut Daily
ok, got it, funny….
yeah, they stand out cuz they got caught.
the devil made them do it….(flip wilson)
lol.
bbl, was just checking .
I’ve been critical of Obama’s pandering to that lobbying group, but asking Rabbi Saperstein to deliver the invocation is a great move. He has been a very powerful voice for the separation of church and state, and on keeping fungie wackoos out of the courts. Obama is sending a message to a lot of people with this move. I would have preferred Rabbi Michael Lerner, but that’d never happen…
obama already has his response to the president’s “timetable”
I like this, he takes the initiative right out of the republicans court very nicely;
the entire speach is up at c and l right now
http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..d-in-iraq/
no live tape yet though
yep, but it’ll fool the fundies.
It is the private spa right off the master bath that makes me run for a big dose of late night Suzanne’s brain bleach super sprayer …….
Apparently we don’t have people on our side willing to get down and roll around in the mud with the repigs.
It’s interesting because I thought that Obama would announce before the six o’clock news est. It’s getting late.
New Scarecrow post
I’m willing. I just have no clout.
Abe Lincoln is supposed to have said:
Apparently the fundies are a subset of the group which can be fooled all the time.

The Tikkun guy? If so, I really like him.
Yup, the Tikkun guy.
I thought it was the “army-air force”. But McCane went to the Naval Academy, right? I thought he was navy, like his daddy and his daddy before him.
i looked at these photos yesterday, and that cat stood out..but didn’t see the captions…..was the only thing in the photos that wasn’t framed, or an objet d’art besides the towels on the lounge chairs by the pool..bizarre.
and the train on the mantle–glass over it.
and weird thing, cindy refers to things in the ‘one step removed’ way—my husband, over and over, and “has been in the family” not my family when talking about her childhood home….
did anyone read the article? i did yesterday.
mccain saed cindy has a photo fetish-
and the article mentions one–this is so strange,,,one of mccain the day he dropped out of the race the last time, now, tell me, is this a photo you would want around to remind you of thatday?
and–
ya just can’t make this stuff up
==snip==
The house is also a showcase of the senator’s enthusiasm for buying exotic carpets. “I’m a terrible shopper, but I buy these rugs when I travel. I was recently in Afghanistan and bought this,” he says, pointing out a large, finely made carpet in russet and brown. There are others from Turkey and Georgia, as well as the Native American carpets from his wife’s family.
my favorite person of history…..
thanks.
You are correct that McCain went to the Naval Academy. After graduating, he trained as a Naval Aviator.
And it was the “Army Air Corps” up until the Air Force became its own branch of service in 1947.
Which ideas? He keeps flip-flopping until he gets the campaign dough.
