Congrats and only about six months obviously overdue considering the demographic of their viewers:
Rachel Maddow will replace Dan Abrams as host of the 9PM hour on MSNBC, the New York Times’ Bill Carter reports. Just last month in a Times article by Jacques Steinberg, MSNBC president Phil Griffin declared Maddow "at the top" of a "very short list" for those who should have their own show, though at the time he said he "[didn't] know when" that would be. As Carter reports, the final stretch of the 2008 election season will be Maddow’s debut as the host of her own MSNBC show
Now all we have do is watch it.

Clean-up isle 1, dead zed
Most excellent news! I’m very much a fan of Rachel, and listent to hear on my way home from work. When I get home, I watch Olbermann, and now it’ll be back to Rachel.
She is very smart, well informed, and wise; exactly what the MSM badly needs. It’s like one of us is finally one of them.
It’s those who are trying to become brain knowers without getting permission who creep me out.
Good morning Attaturk and thanks for the post.
Rachael is smart, funny, informed and informative and yes long overdue.
I only see posted video clips of Maddow, but I’m favorably impressed so far.
Per her Wikipedia entry:
Citizen wigwam:
What is certainly one of the many advances in communication opportunities that Rachel’s show provides is a camera and mic for many of the fine blog journalists and commentators who we here at the Lake kinda take for granted. I’m especially lookin forward ta seein a bunch of Glen Greenwald and Marcy and Jane “take No Prisoners” Hamsher. I hope she ken give Josh Marshal some light too.
The synergy between Olbermann and Maddow should make for a real two hour cage-rattler…heads have gotta be explodin’ over at Fox Noise.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THEY STILL HAVE FIGHT LEFT IN ‘EM!!!
Sweet!
I first heard Rachel on the new Air America and loved her wit and smarts. They canned the show but brought her back and she’s been a rising “star” who is intelligent and presents the left side of things very convincingly.
This is a good move and hopefully more people will be exposed to her intelligence and her views.
Congrats Rachel. You deserved it!
This post saved me from looking up where to say Congrats to one of the best informed people on TV
Mornin’, pups -
Has anyone heard any further news on the health status of Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D)?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26303502
Now all we have do is watch it.
so not a problem, be-Fezzed one.
Allow me to take a moment for my people and celebrate that Rachel is the first ever out lesbian to host an American primetime news show.
Maddow will be the first out lesbian to host a prime-time news or political commentary show on American television, and one of the very few women ever to do so. MSNBC does not have any other news or political commentary shows hosted by women
What Rachel brings to the mix for all of us, aside from being brilliant and very very good at her job, is another voice and bridge to and from the progressive camp.
It was such good news to hear this yesterday!
x
I am so excited about this. I have faithfully listened to Rachel since she was on Air America in the mornings. She is brilliant. How she relates news is a thing of beauty. She is clear, logical, provides background, connects the dots giving us the whole picture usually with ironic humor. She is a gifted storyteller.
I hope to see on her new show all those great guests she has on her radio show, people that are rarely or never seen on msm. I have a R relative that thinks Faux is balanced because they have Alan Colmes on with Sean! R’s & far too many other americans think the so-called liberals they see on Faux & all the other “news” programs are representative of real progressives. It makes my head hurt to think that most americans have no clue who most of the guests on liberal radio shows are. No wonder this country is so damn ignorant & we get the kind of leadership we do.
This is really exciting. She could be even better than Olbermann really, because hopefully she will use the whole hour properly, and not have an oddball-type section.
I agree with you, Norske, it would be great if she brought in top bloggers.
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo and Friedman today. MoDo’s piece of fiction today is titled “Two Against the One.” She fantasizes that in a small hideaway office in the deserted Capitol, a clandestine meeting between two senators with one goal. If she wants to write fiction she should quit the Times and start churning out bodice rippers… This post from The Daily Howler does a good job of explaining what’s wrong with her. Mr. Friedman asks “What Did We Expect?” He points out that President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia gave Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin an excuse to exercise his iron fist.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes with real maple syrup. I’m doing a little happy feet dance for two reasons — not only does Rachel Maddow get her own show, but it removes that jerk Dan Abrams. We’re battening down the hatches and getting ready for Fay. We’re told to expect enormous amounts of rain at the very least. Have a great day.
1,738 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Loo Hoo:
I think that she’s gotta bring in folks from the bloggosphere because it’s not jest the “personality” of ther host but the talent and voice of the guest commentators that make or break a program like this…and if she is to succeed like the network bosses want ‘er to then she’s gunna need ta bring in talent that hasn’t been seen before and developes an audience off of Olbermann so that people develope loyalty to both hours. This could be the best regular information programming since “See It Now”.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE BASTARDS AREN’T DEAD YET!!
i caint hardly wait to fer her to have her own show. seems lack sumbidy should real eyes that they could make a ton of money showin tuther side of thangs on a counta the main stream media bein fully owned n operated by them publicans.
Nothing like a little humour to go with those banana pancakes. Since Sulztburger Junior has taken over printing fiction has become the norm.
Cleveland Plains Dealer
Nicole Williams, spokeswoman for the 11th District congresswoman, had no information about the incident.
Right on. Hopefully she’ll leave “teh funny” to Olbermann, since it would fall pretty flat when she’d do her comedy bits on Air America. She’s great at analysis and interviewing.
We are going to need to watch, and in huge numbers since MSRNC canceled Phil Donahue’s show a while back even though it had good ratings. Like Olbermann’s show, we need to make Maddow’s ratings so good that they can’t possibly rationalize canceling her right away. Spread the word, y’all!
Firepup Freedom Fighters:
…AND now we get two fuckin’ hours a night, this is enough ta put Fox outta the fake news business and back into comedy reviews.
Perhaps Rachel should have Henry Kissinger employee Josh Cooper Ramo on for commentary, like NBC does. /s
http://gawker.com/5035463/henr…..mpic-fever
Anyone else freaked that Shrubya, Putin and Kissinger were all together in a far away, locked down land while Russia starts pulling some weird shit in Georgia? Very odd timing with all this, isn’t it?
Thankee for the up-date.
The first half-hour of call-ins to Washington Journal could be interesting: thugs only…….should bush 3.0 choose liarman for VP?
Maybe he should have two VPs Lyndsay and the Liar.
Good Morning, And I think I just heard our li’Pres. is going to check out New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. I am so hoping he doesn’t make any more mess. The NO people should be warned; more lies/photo ops coming their way. Wonder if he will visit the homeless, take a look at the housing his Housing Authority tore down? Or maybe he will want to make a nother well-lighted speech from Jackson Square. Or maybe just fly over. He sure gave us good photos. Poor folks. They have had enough bad luck.
Cograts to Rachel. Silliness to make her wait so long, with so many losers that needed replacement.
Rachael is the best liberal voice out there. So quick to rebut repub talking points. I’ve never heard her show. Does she have guests who represent the other side? When they say KO is an echo chamber, it’s a valid criticism, imho. Rachael shines when she’s opposite some neo-con. Of course, she may have difficulty getting them to appear on her show. Can’t wait.
Interesting example of two wrongs making a right. *g*
That’s great news. I have been really impressed with Rachel. I used to listen to her regularly on AAR, but since we don’t have an actual station around here, I only have the time and money to listen to the Thom Hartmann podcast. I enjoy seeing online video of her though.
I just wish I got MSNBC. I would have to upgrade my satellite package to get it, and I’m just not willing to pay even MORE money for TV. The one good thing, though is that at least Fox News is also not on the basic package so I don’t have to block it.
What are the odds of getting a bonafide liberal on CNN.
Happy news about Rachel!
the three stooges
Good for R.M. She deserves support.
And watch it we will. She’s fantastic.
The right is always wrong, no matter how many of them.
Yippee for Rachel.
What are the odds of getting a bonafide liberal on CNN.
Slim to none. :-(((
This response brought to you by the Department of SATSQ.
She’ll be up against Hannity and colmes. That’s the best news. Their ratings are waaay too high. Makes me sick when I see how many viewers they have.
MoDo even worse than usual, and that’s saying something. She’s bonkers
It would be great if she brought on Noam Chomsky, John Perkins and other leftier intellectuals, even Rick Hertzberg.
The MSM hosts don’t give progressives a voice on the tube and they need to be heard to de construct the BS narrative we have have been told for years.
Another Rachel devotee since March 31, 2004 when AAR went on the air. Been listening to her as they flew her around the time schedule over and over again.
Perhaps the last straw was seeing that CNN still had the majority of dems watching them—why I’ll never understand.
It’s MSNBC’s opportunity to shine here and hopefully build a whole program line up of real live smart people. Looking forward to it.
But I don’t know how she’s going to do both AAR and the teevee gig every night without cracking up.
KUDOS RACHEL!!!!!
Neo-
confascists have no problem putting other people into meat grinders, for their power and profit. However the chances of a neo-confascist appearing with Ms. Maddow is unlikely! She will turn them into fat filled hamburg meat or blood sausage!!What’s to like? But, Ive never understood Rush. Idiots.
Yeah, best news in way too long a time! It’s amazing to see how much she’s improved since the first guest host hour for KO; she was obviously nervous and speech flow was at warp speed. Please understand I’m only referring to presentation and not content because the woman is scary smart. Gonna be interesting to see what kind of title they come with for the show.
Will be watching! Rachel is one of the savviest most interesting pundits on the air these days. The rest are old and stale. Yes, Pat Buchanan, I mean you.
Another watching note — TIVO time… CNN touting John King’s profile program tonight on John McCain. Does some of what Frank Rich was asking for–looks deeper into the guy. Including the circumstances of his “worst moral failing.” In the trailer, juxtapose of Cindy’s comment that he had been separated for 6-1/2 years with the reality that he was living with Carole while shtuppin’ Cindi
Typical Republican family values….philander and alibi, rinse and repeat….
Guess this means Edwards can be running for prez as a Republican in 2020.
Let’s see a campaign ad for the Myfriendsian Candidate with an NVA prison guard drawing O I L $ in the dirt, McCain brainwashed by captors to call his wife trollup &c in public.
How’s Vern Troyer’s McCain impression? Really like to see it in an ad for restaurant 894th Aero Squadron, or maybe some Top Gun scenes . . .
Liberal Majority for Asshats in Office (LMAO)
I try to watch KO in the evening and enjoy Rachel very much. It is very good news that she will have her own show. KO said on a post yesterday that he was looking now for a new guest host (hint Jane). Other folks that I enjoy hearing on tv are Bill Moyers and on Link TV, Amy Goodman, James Zogby and Mosaic
Re; the Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones accident. Isn’t she a super delegate? and isn’t that now at least 2 (Bill Gwatney) that are out of the voting?
Good Morning, I am so excited about Rachel having her own show. It will be interesting to see the format of the show and the type of guests that she has on.
In the trailer…Cindy’s comments…..Hysterical.
At least three, counting DiFi: http://firedoglake.com/2008/08…..ing-ankle/
That just makes it stranger and stranger…Odd coincidence/timing???
I think MSNBC made the decision now on Maddow as a response to the McCane team’s nasty letter. I like it a lot!
I don’t particularly like Charlie Rose, but sometimes he has excellent guests. Also, there’s a program called Night Talk on the Bloomberg channel, where I heard an excellent interview with Ron Suskind. (Things I run across when I’m channel surfing during Olympics commercial breaks.)
Re Cindy: Talk about feeding the crap to oneself…or thinkin’ she can feed it to the rest of it. The woman is cold…but then her sister knows that.
and re L’il Bush goin’ to Nawlins…your #25…maybe he’s just droppin’ by Medusa Matalin’s place for beignets and bribes…
It’s the Clintons, picking off pro-Obama superdelegates one by one. ;-)
more Attaturk upstairs
Okay, a little OT:
I just had an idea that’s kind of childish, and therefore more like something a Republican would suggest, but here it is anyway.
John McCain is so full of shit, I think I’m going to start referring to going number 2 as “taking a McCain.”
Maybe I’ll even teach my kids to say “McCain” instead of some of the other terms they use.
Or for my oldest son, I’ll reprimand him if I catch him saying a dirty word. “Don’t say ’shit’ if you have to talk about it call it ‘McCain’”
Fareed Zacharia, GPS on CNN Sundays can be good too. He did the best interview w/ Obama that I have seen on MSM
CNN may be forced to get someone with real-life views. Be hard to get someone comparable to Rachel though.
Tubbs was a HRC supporter not sure about Feinstein
Yuck…G.Farraro talking about who will be VP? Who the “McCain” cares what she thinks?
I look forward to seeing the format too. Also the intro music and pics.
Citizen JamesJoyce:
These bastards aren’t “NEO-fascists” they are simply the next generation of indigenous American fascists that trace their pedigree back ta the ante bellum slavocracy…the hired help are always available, that is the itenerat preachers and snake oil slalesmen who shill for the plutocrats and make fortunes from the gullible as long as they ken deliver those pathetic creatures to the polls. There is nuthin’ “neo” about these fuckers except the technology and the breadth of corruption of the 4th estate. The oligarchy that runs the show today is linear decendant of the ante bellum northern bankers and the Southern slavers. Nuthin’ new about these slimy fuckers…our grandparents were fightin’ their goons in the streets.
I don’t have cable and after next Feb won’t have TV when the digital conversion takes place but Rachel on her own show is a great start at overtaking Faux News’ ratings for the time slot. Suck this, O’Reilly.
Did anyone watching the Olympics last night see Shawn Johnson’s performance on the balance beam? More importantly, did anyone else catch the peace sign she flashed after she knew she had won gold? Then, on the interview with Costas she’s wearing No Nukes/Peace symbol earrings and NBC had no choice but to show them along with that enchanting smiling face. Good on ya, Shawn, for your performances and your own little protest. Had to drive the reichwingnuts crazy.
Jack Cafferty has been pro/Obama – anti/McCain but that guy needs a personality transplant
What were Cindy’s comments?
Will probably be some twicking as it goes along but I definitely agree with another pup this morning in hoping they keep teh “cute” to a minimum.
This is good news, but until I see Phil Donahue return I will not get really excited. The rightwingers aren’t going to be afraid of her because they can marginalize her by up-playing her sexuality.
Her gravitas is limited to those who read and post here. Perhaps that will change, but why do we need to ‘groom’ a well spoken progressive when we have Phil in the wings?
Enjoy.
Unfortunately, Dan Abrams was getting better and better at calling bullsh*t on his show, and often had hard hitting pieces that bashed Bush, McCain and other Repubs. I would much have preferred to see Rachel take over Chris “thrill up my leg” Matthew’s hour….
Feinstein supported Hillary.
I totally agree!! It always fries me when KO has the usual MSM/MSNBC clowns on over & over: Jonathan Alter, Richard Wolff & Howard Fineman. I love it that he now brings on the guy who used to be Edwards’ communications chief + Jonathan Turley & Chuck Todd.
There are SO many good, knowlegeable progressive voices that never get heard. Put Juan Cole on once or twice a week re Iraq/Afghanistan. Put Marcy on re the latest “time line” and the weeds of the scandal du jour. Put Jane on just because she’s wonderful. So many voices; so little time.
Oh, and I hope she doesn’t waste a segment on “humor” the way Keith does. The folks in that final segment of his are drek!!
Wagonjak – I agree that Abrams was getting better lately, and also wish they’d flushed Matthews to make room for Rachael.
I think the 4th Estate has always had its share of corruption. Go back and read about Hearst and the Spanish American War.
It’s my understanding that MSNBC chiefs require Olberman to report on the celebrity news, but it’s all right with them if he satirizes that whole scene.
That was an “edited” quote from previous comment. Sorry for the confusion.
cerebral aneurism and significant cognitive impairment: latest reports.
Dan Savage used this approach when he effectively turned Santorum into a filthy word denoting things for which I might get moderated for spelling out here! It caught on and endures, that meme.
Hint: a Santorum is a very frothy, juicy activity.
