There were rumblings yesterday that the McCain campaign was calling GOP delegates to ask how they’d feel about a "pro-choice" VP, but it looks like they were more specific, and were sounding them out about Lieberman:
Officials with John McCain’s campaign made a series of conference calls Monday and Tuesday with supporters nationwide to say that Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman may be named as the Arizona senator’s vice presidential running mate, immediately sparking a frenzied effort by some state Republican officials to come up with a strategy to head off such a move, The Washington Times has learned.
One of the concerned state GOP officials told The Washington Times that he talked with two "high-level" campaign officials who said "Lieberman is a very real possibility."
The Moonie Times says that there are plans afoot to organize delegates against Lieberman if his name comes up for a floor vote at the convention.
With Rudi Giuliani delivering the keynote address, it should be a dilly of an event.

Jane, McCain is against a woman’s right to choose and would never consider a vp that does not agree with him. He is only tossing out pro-choice names to pretend that he is a moderate.
yah, call me ill give em an earfull
Oops. Meant to recommend the link at 1 to everyone. Great point for confusticating your Rethug acquaintances.
Rove implies that Lieberman’s inclusion could be construed as “bipartisan” – whether as VP or Secretary Of State.
As Joe has forsaken the Democratic party, wouldn’t that be more like “tripartisan?”
Better yet, let’s just arrest Joe Lieberman for Treason.
and look for some jewish support imo
Is Lieberman pro-choice, really?
Holy Joe wants to be the prick.
This is Great Joe as GOP VP is comedy gold! What a way to piss off the netroots and inspire them to vote! I am worried about Obama’s FISA stand hurting Lefty turnout and Obama’s fundraising but this could help turn things around.
Shit, that ain’t hard. All ya gotta do is open yer mouth and they starting drooling and babbling.
Did Lieberman deliver the Jewish vote in 2000? Not very well. Jewish voters currently support Obama by a wide margin.
Lieberman would be an anchor around McCain’s neck. I hope McCain picks him but there is no way.
Good call that might make Florida tip McCain Obama has to bring up McCain’s stand on making social security private.
COuld Joe even bring in his home state?
Please let him pick that Loser. Please oh please oh please.
Two droopy skinbags to lead the Republican party to certain electoral blah.
That is a great piece, though. A point that would be hard to rationalize. Problem is I don’t know many that are that nuanced.
Rudy, McSturgis, L’il Lie-bee…
just how many marriages does this trio have among ‘em? Anybody askin’ the family values crowd how they can reconcile themselves to this?
Rape Gurney Joe Prochoice Hmm? tough one.
Yes Catholic Hospitals have the right to refuse women who are raped an abortion they can pay for an ambulance ride to another Hospital for an abortion.
Which I guess makes you ProChoice if your a Republican
Come sit by me, beguiner!
p.s. It’s gonna be Pawlenty — this is just pokin’ us with a sharp stick… and McCain’s way of tellin’ the non-base, see, we were willin’ to consider everybody.
This is the most exciting presidential race I can remember. The picking of VP is of major importance for both candidates.
McShame would never want to face the Republican base explaining that he picked a Jew as VP, so it won’t happen.
As far as Rudy, I wonder if he’ll wear drag for keynote address?
Hey Pups the Digg is open so please Digg this post!
How Funny Liarman Joe on the rethuglian ticket!! Who woulda thunk??? What a farce the rethguglians and Mc Pain have become. It just goes to show you they will do any thing to stay in power so they can continue to destroy this country and apply more “Shock Doctrine” to our economy and privatize all of our countries resources. Just like the Chicago boys did in South America!
orly
Best watch out with that stick.
Oh, please. McCain is just annoyed that Obama is getting all of the press. He’d say he was considering Nancy Pelosi if he thought I’d get him coverage.
I knew you was hidin’ out there when I went to Digg.
Please please please….make it Loserman!
You want to take that one, Jane? *g*
Prick me! prick me!
I’m a great kisser.. luv, Holy Joe Loserman.
OT: Poor Toobz Stevens has to stand trial in DeeCee after all. His request to move the trial to AK was denied. How sad.
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpoi…..al_wil.php
Sounds like PUMA to me.
How are you doing today??
It’s so completely going to be Lieberman. Who else could it be? After sacrificing their bench strength to The Holy Bush for eight years, there are no other Republicans he could prick who are neither under indictment nor would inspire a collective “WHO?!??”
He will pick Lieberman and there will be hours of commentary (lifted from RNC press releases) on how the Democrats have gone so far to the left (because some of them are in favor of peace and the rule of law) that their 2000 VP nominee is this year’s Republican pick. Hours more of how he’s doing something unprecedented, unlike that fusty, hidebound Obama.
Mark my words.
omigawd
Halperin’s take on this last night on CNN was that the Lieberman (or Ridge) for VP buzz is a head-fake by the McCain campaign. The real VP selection will be Romney, who is currently “pro-life” after having once been “pro-choice”. In this way, McCain can say that a flip-flopping Romney is a better result for the Republican base than would be a non-flipped Ridge, or even worse a pro-choice, not yet Republican Lieberman.
It’s pretty simple really, Joe is the one person on the planet so lacking in charisma that he won’t outshine McCain.
puma?

McSame/Loserman 08
Pretending his way into office has worked well for Bush, so why not McCain?
Well … for what ever reason .. K-Lo and all the other dead -enders over at NRO .. have a crush on Mittens .. I don’t know why .. but they do
Let them pick Lieberman, it would help with the Catholics in my family. Many of them are liberal on economic issues and strongly against the Iraq war as well as all the wars they think McCain will start, but follow the church line on abortion (I’m a pro-choice atheist myself, but I know and are related to a lot of these folks). If McCain picks Lieberman, it would help the “progressive on issues other than abortion” crowd vote for Obama more comfortably.
I tell them that the reason McCain talks about picking more judges like Scalia and Thomas is not because of Roe v. Wade, but because they are authoritarians who think that the president is king (at least as long as the president is Republican). A Lieberman pick would help me convince them that this is so.
And I’d love to see the Republicans tear themselves apart. So go, Joe.
Party Unity My Ass
Nah, it’ll be Chuck Norris.
I be fine. Yourself?
That’s a kitty who wanted to teach a lesson. *g*
Hanging in there… summer cold been bothering but started the anti-biotics last evening and seem to be doing better on that front.
The only way it could possibly be Lieberman is if McCain’s internal projections are so bad that he thinks a hail mary is the only thing that can win it. That seems unlikely at this point, so I’m betting it’s a play to reinforce his shaky “maverick” brand. (Though how exactly floating the idea of a maverick move and then caving to the base does that, I’m not sure.)
What I find most interesting is the postmodern aspect of this whole move. It seems like everyone the media talks to about this has an opinion about how it’s intended to look (”he’s making noises about this to convince swing voters he’s a moderate, and expecting that the base will forgive and forget if he doesn’t actually follow through.”) We’re used to this from the pundits themselves, but we seem to be getting it from ordinary voters. If it’s not the usual Friedman case of pundits finding or making up people who sound just like them, it makes me wonder if there’s anyone out there who will actually react in the intended way. If everyone is looking at it with an “I understand what they’re doing here” point of view, is there anyone left who will actually be influenced by the move?

Newt supposedly predicted if Lieberman is on the ticket Barr gets 15 percent.
Doesn’t he have some legal problems pending?

When the infection in my sinuses lasts more than a month I know it is time to take the antibiotics. The symptoms keep coming and going and the way I felt tells me it is time for the antibiotics. I have asthma so the docs let me keep the antibiotics at home.

No, foothilsmike has it right: puma is party unity my ass.
If they start that, someone might want to point out to them that the very first Republican president selected a Democrat running mate for his second term on a Unity ticket.

More OT – Sen. Toobz just lost his bid to have his corruption trial moved frm DC to Achorage, disappointing most Alaska news reporters.
Legal, schmeagle.
It’s the GOP. Ask about Blackwell and you are a racist.

I disagree on one point — I doubt there’s any position McCain wouldn’t renounce if he thought it would be a winner. Abortion will never be in that category for McCain, but only because it’s politically beneficial, not because of some principled commitment.
The excerpt from his 2002 autobiography was really unintentionally revealing — he admitted he wasn’t running for president because of any principle or to carry out any cause, but just because he really wanted to be president. He never was as principled as he pretended, but he’s spent the past six years or so aggressively selling out everything he ever pretended to believe in to get the office he believes he deserves.
You’re more than welcome.
Ah, sinus infection, not a cold. Ms. Redshift gets those all too often (bad genetics in the sinus area); they’re nasty.
Many bacterial infections are misdiagnosed as viral..or could have both going on at same time.
I’m not getting my hopes up, but I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if McShame chose Cheney (or was forced by powers-that-be to choose him). If they are going to do the ‘terror, terror terror’ thing again, and it looks like that’s what’s on the agenda, nobody better.
KO had a great piece on this including the audio book version.
Yep. Worked in VA hospitals for 16 years. Docs real picky about using antibiotics as a cure all, which many folks do. One of the reasons the ones we have are becoming less and less effective.

I’m glad you folks are so confident. But I think it’ll be a really powerful team given MSM’s backing. If we let them run on the “Both parties hate us” platform, they could well carry a number of folks who simply want to stick it in the eyes of both parties. IMO it could win Ohio. And I don’t think it’s going to cost them any states they wouldn’t have lost anyway.
Boxturtle (*worry*)
Please pick Holy Joe. Please pick Holy Joe. It would be such a gimme. He hasn’t the looks or money or brains of Romney – the paper thin characteristics that hide his vapid, any policy to win persona. He also isn’t on board with fundamentalist “Christian” views, something McSame already has trouble with.
His foreign policy credibility is misshapen because it passes through the one-color kaleidescope of “war on behalf of Israel, any time, anywhere”, regardless of American interests, an attitude most Israelis, let alone Jewish Americans reject (though not a handful of powerful and generous rightwing billionaires).
The right will try to make hay with Joe’s Democratic past. That, I think, is a pretty sharp two-pointed sword without a handle, so let them grab and hold with all their might. Joe can go down in history, a right wing Veep, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, and never getting to the altar or the bedroom.

I heard the 2002 tape of McCain saying this on the Stephanie Miller Show today. This needs to be played again and again and again.
this is a family blog and yet . . . now I want a cigarette*g*

I stand corrected. I still believe that Eric Cantor gets you everything Lieberman gets, but that is a ticket that will put McCain in a strong position in Florida. That’s not chopped liver.

Ambinder has the RNC lineup. Lieberman is scheduled to speak first on Monday, right before Cheney. (plunger will show excitement) Pawlenty is scheduled to speak first on Thursday. This does not look good for Pawlenty at all.
It appears she has died -

May be about keeping L-prick enthusiastically on board until the candidate is “forced” to name another. “Too bad Joe, I tried – how bout AG?” L-prick is all about ego.
I could go for that AG thing as long as it stands for A Goner
Per NYT a family spokesperson has her in critical condition with a brain aneurysm. Very sad either way.
amen to that.
I was unaware of Congresswoman Tubbs Jones until her eloquent and passionate advocacy of Hillary Clinton during this campaign. She will certainly be missed.

Someone might, but you’d be standing in between Our Media Stars and McCain’s BBQ table. That’s not a safe place to be.
Because this is John McCain and Our Media Stars. You can’t understand the depth and beauty of their love. All he has to do is leak a “scoop” that he’s considering doing something and he gets full credit for having actually done it.
Lieberman has a solid history of losing VP races. Add him to the McCain ticket, please.
