Tragically Hip – New Orleans is Sinking
Nine days ahead of the Hurricane Katrina anniversary, President Shock Doctrine extraordinaire graced New Orleans with his own brand of hope messaging today.
The front page of The Times Picayune had this to say:
Just blocks from the historic Louisiana National Guard facility where Bush delivered his comments and stretching for miles in every direction, large swaths of New Orleans and nearby St. Bernard Parish remain a hodgepodge of restored houses, abandoned, rotting lots and empty concrete slabs, the telltale sign of post-flood demolitions.
The region’s health care, criminal justice and public education systems also continue to struggle.
Somehow I don’t think hope means what President Bush thinks it means.
What’s on your mind tonight?

“The region’s health care, criminal justice and public education systems also continue to struggle.”
Oh, I thought the feds and the shock doctors had fixed all that up with privatization, charter schools, and malign neglect.
Well, let’s throw a few billion more at Iraq and Afghanistan……surely they need it more than our own beloved New Orleans.
“NEW ORLEANS (AP) — President Bush said Wednesday that “hope is coming back” to New Orleans with the help of $126 billion in disaster aid poured into the Gulf Coast region over three years after Hurricane Katrina.”
(from Eureka’s link above)
How much of those billions ended up in the hands of Bush’s political cronies via no-bid contracts?
Hi ES…
My boyfriend Elmore was in Spain taking his youngest son to the south of Spain where he was going to be an exchange student when Katrina happened. So he watched TeeVee coverage via the European lens and the treatment of the dead was extremely shocking to them….. that was the point the coverage when into major spin…..
Then 13 months later Elmore was doing Monday Night Football at the first game at the Dome after Katrina….. he had never been in NOLA but the whole experience started the minute he got off the plane….. everywhere was the overwhelming smell of mold and they laid off 1/3 of the transit workers, there were jobs in NOLA but no housing and a lot of the roads were still broken…… nearly broke his heart to see all the damage viewable from his 13 story hotel….. he said… ”it is like Katrina was just a few weeks ago”
Fron down thread Joe Hill
Oh and while I was at I did Digg your Dugg Neuro
Bush gives the term “derelection of duty” an entirely new meaning. It’s one thing to be derelict, and yet another to fail to understand that you’ve assumed a duty. Party on, frat boy, party on.
An Obama ad ought to show Bush staring out his airplane window …….and New Orleans today. Shame.
Hi ES. New Orleans. The anniversary is coming up right during the
R convention and coincides with John McCain’s birthday. I hope we can get the picture of W with the birthday cake for John. Yeah. They were real concerned about the folks in NOLA. Let’s see how they spin their behavior on that mess.
And W’s promises. He many were carried out? But the casinos were up and running and ready for business in record time.
In this context, hope means praying that somebody who cares and is competent is put in charge very soon.
remeber you passing along Elmores impressions as they happened, katymine. I will never forget it.
I had to hit this tonight.. since my tin foil hat started melting as I read this today. I couldn’t help but think this was all timed to avoid coverage during the convention.
I am off to bed. Take care and enjoy.
Yay for attractive progressive vloggers!
Oh, and this is America’s future if we keep letting conservatives have any authority over anything.
Damn I was in love with Joan Baez when I was 18 or 19. Now I’m friends with one of her cousins but have never made any attempt to meet her. But, still, I think of her as a goddess of some sort. And, who was that unworthy fool that she married for a while? David Harris, or something? What ever happened to him? Icons of my generation. Sigh!
And Bush should slowly morph into McCain.
He will do two games there this season…. Last year he said it looked like nothing had been done in that year….. Elmore is one of those great big mush puppy kind of guys with a heart the size of Alaska (won’t say Texas)…. Will pass on his impressions again this year….
Another thing about NOLA and Katrina that could have helped is this. Here in Florida there are many homes vacant during the summer months when the seasonal people go north. I wrote to some of the blogs and asked that they appeal to some of those owners of vacant homes here to make them available. I don’t recall that any action was taken.
Then again, Jeb was governor. I’ve heard rumors he was not inclined to offer help to “those people.” Even boat owners who offered were turned down. The Bush family values. Real fine people.
you have facebook mail
Sweeet!!
Good! I used to visit New Orleans at least once a year. Often stay with friends who lived there.. No more.
I don’t think this cop is going to be asked to do anymore presentations.
‘night, all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
Hey, Suzanne…..if you are lurking…..platform diving showing on west coast now.
thanks – am watching it
Joan has been seen many times here at the Little Fox.. being just one of the crowd. The Little Fox is a great venue for music not to big and rather cozy!
New Orleans was one of those very special cities that has a culture, personality, cuisine, music, etc. all its own. The U.S. has a few others, but if anybody except a thorough partisan were to pick one out, the chances would be nine out of ten that they’d pick New Orleans. What a tragic fucking loss to Americana.
WELL When ya going to give us one of your patented dives??? Remember no splash..
well it is really bad when the parental units are in bed and I’m putting the house to bed….. Nite everyone
Cool! Redwood city? Nice playbill. I’ve got a brother in the area. Hmmm.
headache tonight so no diving
please feel free to cannonball splash the forking bulgarian judge – just to let him know that i was thinking of him
nite katymine
So, am I right that the trick to no-splash is to turn your palms toward the water and finger tips toward each other and let them make a hole for you to dive into? I once had a girlfriend who was something of a champion diver (so she said) and that’s what she told me.
Kitchen fire.. How is the rebuild coming? They are lucky the whole house didn’t go up.
Bush should be prosecuted for Genocide for what happened during Katrina.
The lack of response was deliberate and continues to this day.
yep been here 30 years and we just love it here. We are on a dean end street so very little traffic and close to everything here and right in the middle between SF and SJ… best of all worlds here in the bay area..
sorta.. this video explains it well
Bye, Women’s Beach Vollyball.
Isn’t Katrina on Hugh’s list?? If not it sure should be!
How ya doing Busted??
What’s on my mind tonight? I wonder how much further along toward NOLA would be if we didn’t have a bunch of raving shitheads running our government. And trying to get rid of one in the congressional district next door is looking a lot more difficult than it ought to be.
Once upon a time, I might have disagreed, but certainly not now. There can be absolutely no doubt about the racism and deliberateness. What happened in New Orleans was a human atrocity, and a cultural nightmare. The cultural treasure was the people and their culture. It wasn’t monuments and artifacts. It’s unrecoverable. But, with the riffraff out of the way, damn they can make realestate profit when the market recovers.
Bye, Women’s Beach Vollyball.
Sniffle.
I don’t watch TV usually but I am going to make an exception just now.
Here’s an image to help us get over the loss.
That got it done.
Going to be a nail biter! Nice post, Cujo.
Yup. Thanks. That’s exactly what I thought I understood.
Just in case y’all think I am being a jerk, I am rooting for all the young individuals who are giving their all.
These youngsters are off the scale amazing and deserve a giant pat on the back, regardless of where they come from
Thanks, ES. I’m afraid you’re right. Holding true to form, here’s what the Seattle Times wrote tonight:
The bar is set pretty low for being a moderate Republican these days.
You keep writing pieces like that, you’ll have to change the header of your blog to “Teary-eyed Old Bastard.”
Nice work.
Well said Busted and very true. It takes a lot of work and dedication to just make it to the Olympics never mind win a medal!
I was reading an article in one of the dead tree editions tonight that said that people were criticizing some Americans who had been passed up by their own country’s Olympic basketball team for playing on teams from the countries where they’re employed. As if they owed so much to this country that they should sit out the games rather than compete for the place they live several months out of the year.
One of the things that generally turns me off are all the anthems at the medal ceremonies. Those athletes do owe their societies something, but in the end it was their own dedication that got them into the games. This ought to be about them, and not about medal counts, etc.
Rant over.
its womens beach volley ball in the rain!!
brazen hussy — small wonder he used the third person
no comment
wet scantily clad women in sand
My point, the individual perseverance, most of these competitors are children, sixteen years old and under the microscope of the media.
I am rooting for each and every one of them!
Cough cough, not all of them are children……
i said women dood
cough
A winning combination…! Btw, I’m further tape delayed than ya’ll! ;-)
Lots of pictures of divers in this PI gallery. Guess beach volleyball really is over.
I didn’t realize riding a bicycle in dirt was an Olympic event.
Yes dear.
I “hope” that history does Bush justice. The harsh justice he deserves.
diving isn’t over – they switched over to women’s vollyball
back to diving
dark dank cell is what he and his administration deserves for just the Katrina response alone never mind all the other crimes!
that’s it for me tonight, pups. g’nite all

nite Suz :>) sleep well!
Goodnight, Suzanne.
Wow, ES. I’m glad someone thought to make a vid for NOLA using this incredible song by The Hip. I was wondering when someone would.
I’m mostly coming down off my usual post DJ night high at the moment. *yawns* But the fact that NOLA (a place i still want to see someday in all its wonderful glory) stands like this 3 years later is a shame. I gave where i could, but can do no more right now. Yet another crime against humanity that the Shrub/Cheney admin has done.
Chertoff and DHS, having demonstrated their meticulous observance of emergency response best practices, will similarly take meticulous good care of our personal data, right?
What do you mean??? you don’t have any right to private personal data… see latests FISA bill… say no more~!
Beach volleyball certainly does. Just saw a picture in the PI.
Last weekend some friends and I were discussing the Olympics. One of them asked, quite seriously, if men played beach volleyball.
I’m guessing this is one sport where the women’s game gets more coverage.
Absolutely!
I am on more fucking lists than you can shake a stick at.
They will take such good care of it.. you will be the last person on earth to be able to check and see what they do with your info. /s
Ask and go straight to the top of a new chit-list.
They have men’s volleyball?
I saw some vids not too long ago that seemed to show that there were still places where the demolished buildings hadn’t been cleaned up yet. Sadly, I don’t get YouTube these days, so I can’t watch this thing.
The Ornery one made me turn on the Olympics.. track is on here.
More or less depending on you point of view /s
Men’s beach volleyball used to get better coverage, many years ago. Then someone noticed that more sports fans are men, apparently.
More or less depending on you point of view
/sAll better.
private personal data is unamurikan
private profit, now that is allowed
I can’t even call my 94 year old Granny.
She has been psyching herself out about these Olympics for six months.
I’m on the DO NOT CALL list until it’s over.,
Photographic proof, courtesy of the AP, I think.
Oh so poignant post ES – our Big Easy branch of the family all survived but moved far away and unlikely to return – bless ‘em.
Dood,
I could have went all day without that visual.
Olympian male volleyballers are tall enough to play basketball
I wonder what influences their choice of sport
hey it is capitalism at it’s very best… just ask uncle Miltie and the Chicago boys…
US Lady Volleyball, 2 t o 0.
Our ladies win what a game they played.. amazing record of wins they are racking up!!
I actually would not mind so much them having some of my private personal data, as long as, like good capitalists, they paid me a fair price for it…
It annoys me to no end that in order to get the “reduced” price at the grocery store, I have to let them swipe a card that allows them to monitor my purchases and target me with mail ads…If they want to study my buying habits, I would be happy to become a test subject, for a reasonable fee…instead, I have to give my data away just to get a “fair” price on my groceries
there’s something wrong with that
The thing that pisses me off about that is if ya don’t use the card ya pay twice as much.
Meat, Beer, Smokes and Cat food.
Have a nice day.
and then the government can ask them to turn over my grocery buying data–and the grocery corporation will cooperate, without a warrant–so that they can profile my grocery buying habits to see whether I’m a terrist–i.e., whether I buy too many middle eastern foods, or whatever
whatever it takes to keep us safe /s
fuck
May-Walsh thank Chimpy for his inspiration.
I need a new spectator sport.
Those used to be the deals they gave customers for nothing. As in, they had that stuff on sale so you’d come in their store.
What’s really sad is that while my sister worked at a grocery store that didn’t have the cards, customers were asking that they start issuing them, so the customers could save money.
We really need better public education.
what kind of twisted mind could possibly derive inspiration from Chimpy McFlightsuit?
maybe we should ask laura
Gee do ya think now there was market speculation/manipulation in the drive for higher oil prices??? The Bush administration falling down on their job again! Impeach these incompetent bastards! They have screwed over every person in this country! “Shock Doctrine” at its worst:>((
maybe she was inspired by the photos of him gazing out the window of AF1 thousands of miles above NOLA while he let it rot
so preznintial, you know
as I recall, he was a cheerleader, not an athlete…
In all fairness, jocks may have to be forgiven (somewhat) for not keeping abreast of stuff on the ‘planetary scale.” Kind of a busy schedule.
But I would like to like them more.
A mind that spends more time running and jumping than reading, I imagine.
Well, now that I’ve been disillusioned, I think it’s time I said goodnight.
Goodnight, all.
nite, Cujo
I for one sure don’t give a fuck what she says or thinks… She is bought and paid for!
nite cujo
admire your Darcy piece tonight. again
Whoa.. new world record 200 meters.
A few speculators dominate vast oil market
Regulators: Swiss energy firm holds 11 percent of contracts on NYMEX
Got OIL??
Yep. The track world must be just plain frightened by the Jamaicans.
Now, that’s perverse.
A little Carlos to liven it up
My DFH friends who can’t afford health insurance – but hope to get it one day – maintain:
(1) the chains sell the card “buyers info” to Big Insurance: which means the insurance megacorps can know about purchases of booze/tobacco/fatty foods
[funny what one learns from DFH programmer friends]
(2) Big Insurance uses purchasing histories to price/deny health, auto, liability insurance: and gives the same data to their credit partners
[funny what one learns from DFH programmer friends]
(3) Inventing personal “data” for the buyer cards gets around this.
[funny what one learns from DFH programmer friends]
But what do I know?
Gotta go to the market – now where’s “Mr. Wong’s” card?
g’nite, pups – sleep well!
Just get a new card and give them false info… works Safeway checkers always look at receipt and say to me “Funny there is no name” I just say oh well.. I still get the specials!

Thanks.
Been a little quirky for me for an hour or so.. I didn’t know if it might just be a slow conection on my end.
Anyway, turning in myself.
Good night fabulous firedogs
sorry I didn’t pay more attention. It was a page that I see when my computer inadvertently goes off line, such as when I lose my wireless router signal. can’t remember the exact wording, something like page cannot be found, plus some fine print
hope that helps
it could have been a hiccup in my router or my cable service
I’m on Dell PC Windows 2000 Internet Explorer Cox Cable.
nite.
Sounds like a local (your end) connection issue.
Thanks again.
I was told booze sales are not tied to cards – fear of dealing with subpoenas in domestic cases, etc. Groceries are now asking for ID to issue the cards – “otherwise, how can we cash your checks”. You’re right folks are hooked on their cards and seem to have no difficulty at all with the privacy aspects or the fact they are getting the same deal they always got – sale items.
Appears the data gets pooled. In the early days saw a grocery asst mgr scan a major drug store card when a shopper couldn’t find her grocery card. Said she’d get in trouble if anyone knew she’d done it. The merchants must be well compensated (one way or another) for the data, they really don’t like it when you purchase for cash and decline their cards. Only a matter of time before someone figures out how to refuse a cash sale without ID.

We are as grains of sands in the universal picture.
Katrina proved one thing you all do not understand. We as communities have to be sustainble to ourselves. Thr cvorporate oligarchy that controls our country does not follow “E Pluribus Unum” sadly.
we need to be more pragmatic and prepare ourselves individually and collectively to be self sustaining as insurance for the Shock Doctrine that is about to be heaped upon us by the military industrial complex.
The world is a corporate battle ground from the Pacific Rim, West to Indian and African continents, North through Central Asia and the Russian Federation. We are providing the personnel and military. They, the investors will reap the rewards.
Iraq has long been a target of Zionist expansion dating from the post WWI British Palestine Mandate * the ols Ottoman TUrkish Empire) a huge territory that the International Jews were determimed to settle as their Biblical Promised land. That has not changed. The cost and risks for corporate control of Central Asia Oil, Gas and other natural resources needed to keep the Global Corporate business plan expanding is on us as a nation. Millions have died and more will if the Neocons stay in power.
