A few weeks ago it was "presumptuous." Now we’re seeing "audacious" as the new word of choice among the wingnuts to describe Barack Obama.
It’s kind of clever, really — take a keyword from the title of one of his books and use it to call him "uppity" without actually saying it. But then, the dog-whistle components of this campaign, as we’ve seen, are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
David Fredosso at The Corner uses it to counter Obama’s attack on the smear merchants peddling the "Obama is a baby killer" theme. Evidently, he’s "audacious" for calling a pack of liars exactly what they are.
Even better was James Taranto’s wielding of the term in his attack on Obama in today’s WSJ. According to Taranto, Obama showed "amazing chutzpah" in his effort to call on John McCain to reel in his vicious attacks on Obama’s patriotism and acknowledge that both of them have worked over the years for America’s security and place it atop their priorities. Here’s what Obama said:
I have never suggested that Sen. McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America’s national interest. Now, it’s time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same.
And Taranto?
Of course, if Obama were to accuse McCain of picking his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition, everyone would laugh, because it obviously is not true.
Oh, we’re laughing all right. I’m sure last week’s display of McCain’s militarism — particularly the "We’re all Georgians now" speech — had nothing whatsoever to do with politics or the Georgian lobbyists with whom McCain surrounded himself.
Chutzpah indeed.

About Firedoglake
Hi David.
Prediction: This one won’t stick, and they’ll drop it within a week. Most ”low-information voters” have no idea what ”audacious” means, and the closest word they’ll associate it with is ”awesome”, which is obviously not what they’re going for.
Of course, if Obama were to accuse McCain of picking his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition, everyone would laugh, because it obviously is not true.
Guess he didn’t see Olbermann last night. KO played a portion of the audio version of McCrazy’s book, wherein ole John just flat-out said that he was running for president because of his personal “ambition”.
The attacks keep coming from the Republics. Even if one doesn’t work, it keeps Obama on the defensive while McCain gets a free ride. McCain must be attacked, a sustained attack that lasts through the election.
Most people will probably think of the primary definition. His book is “The Audacity of Hope.” So they’re going to refer to him this way? Not for long.
Everytime Obama compliments McC, it pisses me off. Does he not understand what’s going on here? Every speech should start out with “McC is not an honorable man” then talk about Keating, his lobbyist-advisors, his abandonment of our soldiers…..
And, while we’re on the subject, why isn’t there some mention of his N.Vietnamese propaganda tapes? It may be sleazy to mention but I have a feeling that if Kerry did it, it would have come up.
Further, he did nothing to become a hero. It was passive. Being shot down and imprisoned means you paid a high price, but it does not make you a hero.
Bear with me….I’m angry and alarmed by the Zogby poll. It’s time for Obama to get mean.
mcsame’s appearance at the rick church of orange county was ALL pander. in fact, his appearances anywhere are always a giant pander to whatever group he is speaking to.
If Obama intends to keep to the high road, I hope his VP is skilled at the low road.
Obama: John McCain is a war hero, therefore my following condemnation of his personal attacks will fall on deaf ears because I just told you that he’s an honorable man.

audacious ? chutzpah ?
are the kidz at the Corner straight up huffin’ the paste now ?!?!?
considering the target audience, that is some tin eared shit –
howzbout – reckless, rude, wild, slapdash ???
what next – insouciance ? jeebus Scaife et al should stop payment on the checks
I’ll admit – I was wondering why the Repubs were using a complimentary term myself. I’m thinking that they figure it’ll be taken as “ambitious”
And as Dr. Frank noted above, to low-information voters, who may not know the definitions, they’ll just assume it’s ’something bad’.
.I’m angry and alarmed by the Zogby poll…
I wish I could find the rankings of the historical accuracy of the various pollsters. Saw it once, can’t remember now where it was. Zogby was at the bottom. Last. None worse.
They might confuse it with “bodacious,” creating even more confusion… *g*
From WTOL, Toledo – bad news:
Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones had massive aneurysm – remains on life support in Cleveland hospital.
The Republican noise machine is doing what it does best it is creating noise. The Republicans have an 8 year record of monumental, across the board failure, mismanagement, and criminality. They have nothing positive to run on so they are throwing up chaff and other bright shiny objects to distract voters from the one central fact that if they want 4 more years of the same they should vote for John McCain.
I have a hard time believing that anyone is going to assume people mean that Obama is bold, daring, or fearless when they call him audacious. The secondary definition seems to be the obvious meaning.
It’s not what you say, it the context, and their intended context, is unmistakable.
LOL. And what usually follows “bodacious”? That’s gonna confuse ‘em, in a ‘where’s the beef’ kinda way. *g*
It’s also very poor framing. Obama should refrain from making any complimentary comments about his opponent, it creates a confused message. You won’t find the rethugs, who have the whole marketings approach to politics down pat, ever doing so.
KO had a great clip last night of McShame conceding that he was running for pres because of ambition then compared to his yesterday attack that Obama was ambitious. But everyday it is a new attack (the daily smear) next day is response. jujitsu strategy
look or listen to any media outlet. Have any of them quoted Obama on the question that he asked McCain? Have any taken sound bites from Obama’s speech out of context and changed the meaning of what he said? Compare and contrast. Is McCain treated the same way as Obama is? No, the MSM treats McCain as their golden boy who can say or do whatever he wants, yet get no criticism from the media. McCain is the MSM idol, while Obama is the usurper. Even the AP has revealed its bias towards McCain. With the entire MSM against Obama, the only truth comes from the internet. BUT, 50% of the voters in the country are the know nothings, the sheeple nation. They get all their opinions from what the MSM tells them. With the MSM totally on the side of the repiglicians-and the repigs whining every time one of the reporters goes off the st john message-expect that every major news outlet will buckle under. Note, if dems complain, one either never hears about it or the dems complaint is laughed off as being something minor.
Oh crap.
How horrible.
Here’s my story: I once had a husky/shepherd mix who was an alpha female in a house full of other pets. She had the patience of Job where it came to the other animals in our own home. She taught all the other pets the rules of the house like she taught her own litter of puppies. I had several other dogs while she was alive; one she outlived and two others survived her. We also had several cats. She was tolerant, but she was top dog and the others all accepted her benevolent leadership. Then we had guests, my nephew and his family, who were staying with us as they transitioned to live in Phoenix. They had a dog, a chow, who was the only animal in their home, and he had a reputation of not being good with other animals. From the first day they moved in, the chow tried to antagonize all the other animals in the house. He bullied, the nipped at, he threatened, bared his teeth, did everything he could to irritate the others, but they behaved and he didn’t. As I said, Snowy had the patience of Job, but every being has its tipping point and finally, after about a week of harassment, Snowy had her fill of his obnoxious behavior. True to form, she had the other dog on it’s back under neath her begging for mercy within a split second. It happened so fast, nobody actually saw what went down, but once she asserted herself, the other dog was cowed for good. That boy did not bother her again, and he didn’t bother the other dog either. I’m very much hoping that this is what’s going on with Obama and McLame. I’m hoping that Obama’s leadership is such that he can contain McLame’s irritating attacks so quickly during or after the convention that he is able to pull out of the current slump. I’m hoping his kid gloves are not giving away the election, because as someone else said this morning, we must block McBush or we will be doomed.
According to Josh Marshall’s site, McCain is now saying that he didn’t question Obama’s patriotism. Obama must come out is say that McCain can not remember what he says from one day to the next. Rather than go on the defensive they have to turn it around. It’s truthful to say that McCain can’t remember from one day to the next and he forgets what he voted for.
If it isn’t too audacious to suggest; If McCain is claiming to be Georgian now, doesn’t that disqualify him from the presidency? Thought qualification was native born citizens only.
Georgia is killing McCain you cannot keep talking tough and then doing nothing sooner than later the American people will expect McCain to do something and if he does not they will assume that he is all talk.
Of course context is important, the sneering references to liberals has branded that word for most voters. But I’ll still bet they abandon this term PDQ, they have plenty of others that do the job better.
Hope she follows in the footsteps of SD sen Johnson. It will be a tough road but doable
Obama should question McCain’s patriotism KBR has electrocuted how many of our solders but the Senate Armed Forces committee which McCain chaired has let them keep their war contracts.
Just who does McCain put first KBR and Darth or our Troops, electrocuting your own troops and to keep on electrocuting your own troops by keeping KBR on the job is a sure way to lose a lost war.
Forget the Surge is working another four years of Pyrrhic victory like the Surge and we will be Undone. Gas is at $5 a gallon, the economy is in flames, we are bailing out Banks.
We cannot afford to sustain another four years of well we have not lost yet!
Obama’s campaign is foundering. If he’s counting on his ground troops he may be in for a big surprise. McCain through his media surrogates and Republican attack dogs have defined who Obama is to that very lagre segment of the electorate that gets their information from the corporate media. They are not checking the blogs and alternative news sources. The MSM said so, so it must be true. Once the image has been accepted by these voters it’s difficult if not impossible to appeal to their reason. Saw it during the McGovern campaign. Obama’s ground troops may well have the doors slammed in their faces in Sept, Oct. and Nov. because these people already know Obama, McCain and the complicit media told them. Most Americans wouldn’t know corporate fascism if they were looking out from barbwire compounds.
The surge is working BS is unraveling as McShame speaks. Maliki is at work eliminating the awakening councils and a Kurdish confrontation is looming.
Talking tough and then doing nothing…the Bush strategery!
How terrible. Best wishes to her and her family.
IIRC the one fact why anti-ballistic missiles will not work is that it is too easy to deflect or overcome the ability to identify the real object needing to be addressed. Chaff is a cheap easily presented material that is hard to distinguish from the target sought, thus hiding it.
That is the method being employed by McCain and the MSM. What must be done is look for the object having the substance and focus on that, not the chaff. The substance of propaganda, disinformation, half-truths, lies, diversions, etc. are the substance that by addressing what it is, disarms the attack. If it is a lie, call it so. If it is dishonesty, call it so. Identify the source from where it comes, who is benefitting, and nail the candidate with accountability and responsibility. Call denials what they are, avoidance of responsibility.
There they go again….. should be fed back to McCain and Republicans at all opportunity.
In politics, War and in Bed! Pity poor Laura and Cindy.
Imagine all that missile defense money spent on something that will work like healthcare:)
Also promising help then doing nothing (except enriching pals) see New Orleans, Iowa, etc.
I don’t believe that the Carlyle Group invests in healthcare so why would all that money go to that?
I think the Carlyle Group owns a string of nursing homes.
I have no pity for Cindy
The big reason there is not healthcare is every time it is considered, a barrage of chaff deflects attention from the substance of the opposition; myths (socialism, be very afraid), diversions (insurance, profits to privates), misrepresentations (private provides premium services), and so on. The substance common to all is that they are lies in various guises. No one will call the lie. Until that changes, expect no change in getting health services.
Cardinal fascist Republican rule…..’Slaves should be seen and not heard’.
They do, Research their reputation, IIRC it is regarded as less than desirable. After all, who is more vulnerable than the aged exposed to staff paid minimum wages, without adequate and sustained training. Would you want to be cared for by a $6.xx/hr Doctor?
Does Obama ‘believe’ that no considerations beyond loyally serving the country roll around inside the heads of such as Mc$ame and Bu$h Co?
If so, then notions of ‘bipartisanship’, ‘comity’ and unquestioning ’support’ of whatever mindless or destructive ‘ideas’ pour from the mouths of the political class, must never, under the Obama purview, be seen as anything but pure as the driven snow.
Else we must consider Obama’s ‘position’ regarding Mc$ame’s ‘honestly’ patriotic musings to be nothing but pablum for the thought-challenged and homage, of a sort, to the lowest common denominator of political bull shit.
I mistakenly had thought that Obama was intelligent enough to dare, however audaciously, to speak to the immensity of the destructive dilemma we collectively face. That REQUIRES fundamental honesty, not wishy-washy political expediency, which includes having the courage to call others out on their behavior, ill-conceived ‘policies’, and blatant war mongering.
As I said the other day, Barack Obama must grasp the nettle, or he will be just anotheer pretty face flashing by in the rear-view mirror.
If Obama succeeds in losing this battle, for such it is, he will be forgotten in short order, but the rest of us will be reminded daily of the consequence. For the rest of our lives, for the rest of our children’s lives, and their children’s lives until the end-time of our species.
Such ‘end-time’ is hoving into view. Those blinded by greed and power will not see, their minions cannot see and most everyone else has their eyes screwed shut, at least in America.
But the rest of the world does see and, in time (though perhaps, ‘too late’), they will.do.something. And America will be sorry, very sorry indeed.
This may well be our last chance, Barack, haven’t you the grasp to realize what is at stake? Haven’t you the courage to speak the truth. Haven’t you the integrity to recognize the truth?
The ‘audacity’ of hope is one thing, the courage of conviction to share those hopes and the honest capacity to dare to make those hopes real, once raised, is quite another.
Hill now reporting Rep Tubbs Jones’ life support may be withdrawn as early as this afternoon.
So far as I can find, nothing has been released by her office, family or the hospital, past statements last night that there would be no info until today.
Warm hopes and prayers from here.
From a recent McC ad running in Ohio…
“The original maverick” is translated by a member of my family as meaning:
“Old, unusual, unorthodox person who refuses to conform to society…”
And he calls Obama audacious?
Audacious? That’s a compliment as my young ones have pointed out…Honestly, we need someone willing to be bold after what McC’s party has done to our country. Take that label and run with it Obama.(The word has two meanings and the first definition listed in our dictionary can be considered a compliment.)
That is, Democracy…
