He spoke fluent Farsi and passed as Afghani. The stories he tells of our stupidity like flying in to tell people in the hinterlands they now have democracy and can vote against the warlord and then flying away and dropping leaflets on people who can’t read. He thought then (around 2006)we might prevail in Afghanistan if we built the country up economically and improved people’s lives, but we didn’t. The same is true in Pakistan. We want to turn everyone into Americans, but are we all that happy and wonderful others want to emulate us? We are so full of ourselves.
