Lookee here! The Republicans’ presumptive presidential nominee, John Sidney McCain III, wants to raise your taxes:
In their Wall Street Journal piece yesterday, Jason Furman and Austan Goolsbee, economic policy advisors for Obama, highlighted the policy detail McCain prefers to downplay.
…Sen. McCain’s plan does include one new proposal that would result in higher taxes on the middle class. As even Sen. McCain’s advisers have acknowledged, his health-care plan would impose a $3.6 trillion tax increase over 10 years on workers.
Sen. McCain’s plan will count the health care you get from your employer as if it were taxable cash income. Even after accounting for Sen. McCain’s proposed health-care tax credits, this plan would eventually leave tens of millions of middle-class families paying higher taxes. In addition, as the Congressional Budget Office has shown, this kind of plan would push people into higher tax brackets and increase the taxes people pay as their compensation rises, raising marginal tax rates by even more than if we let the entire Bush tax-cut plan expire tomorrow.
Got that? McCain’s hollow healthcare plan is bad enough, but the fine print includes a possible tax increase on tens of millions of people in the middle class.
So. McCain’s pushing a tax hike on the middle class. You’d think that this would be front-page news in all our big papers, and the lead story on radio and TV newscasts. But you’re probably only hearing about it now through this website — or maybe through The Carpetbagger Report or Matt Yglesias. And your non-blog-reading rellies probably haven’t heard about it at all.

Okay, Obama’s campaign has the money. They need to get the word out.
What a jerk.
What a jerk McCane is, not Obama…
3.6 trillion, is that all? You should try to be less dramatic, PW. /s
That’s the plan. Get rid of the middle class, crush the unions, and make sure everyone is saddled with debt. And let’s not forget to plug the loophole of bankruptcy. That way you have a captive population of drones. [spit]
Thanks, PW, for speaking the truth even if no one else will.
Aloha, PW!
It’s outrageous that you would accuse John McCain, a former prisoner of war, of wanting to raise taxes on the middle class.
Sounds like Vodo economics to me… Never trust rethuglians they always shift the tax burden on those who least can least afford it… But the Rich well they need the tax breaks so they can invest more oh and then they make more so they can invest more…Of course they will also find ways to hide as much as they can in tax free shelters many that are not legal and overseas. Ya know somethings just ain’t right about their policies! The Rich always make out and the rest of us have to scrabble for the leftover crumbs…. Kinda like “Trickle Down Economics” of the RayGun Erra.
Spoken like a charter member of the chattering classes! You’re now qualified to write a column for any major newspaper you choose.
Hey ES I see ya Digging tonight!!
I’m lucky enough that I can still afford vegetables — I’ve got a bottle of ketchup in my fridge. (I’ll go to my grave loathing St. Ronnie the Schmuck for that…)
this kind of plan would push people into higher tax brackets and increase the taxes people pay as their compensation rises, raising marginal tax rates by even more than if we let the entire Bush tax-cut plan expire tomorrow.
Mother. Fuckers.
To (steal) a line: G.O.P. = Got Ours Piss-off !!
obama is using the entirely WRONG framing, which is what we are talking about downstairs;
obama should NOT be saying “he’s gonna raise taxes on the wealthy”
that doesn’t fly, what he NEEDS to do is point out the wealthy have been GIVEN middle class assets and those assets are going to be reclaimed
this is NOT a tax, it is re aquiring what is ours
they have to get a much better line then “raise taxes on the wealthy”
and cant afford decent healthcare,or medication
Hello, nahant.. I thought you might be off eating chili. *g*
Grasping Oil Plutocrats
Groping Old Perverts (never goes out of style, seemingly)
Dugg. It’s very important that people understand this. Great work, PW.
Wouldn’t it be fair to say the Bush tax cuts were for the rich.. these increases would not affect the rich?
You don’t need to keep drones healthy, as long as they’re still breeding. (See abortion, women’s rights, choice.)
so true…out with the old,in with the new
Done Dugg.
PW, left out these WSJ nuggets…
It makes me crazy to hear the republics talking about life beginning at conception. As soon as that life is outside of the womb, the republics don’t give a rats ass about it.
that’s the way I interpret it. Not a lot of uber-rich working W-2 jobs. And even if they are, they’d still pay taxes on the “extra” income at a lower rate, wouldn’t they?
That’s from the Murdoch Street Journal??!!?? Cripes…
As soon as that life is outside of the womb, the republics don’t give a rats ass about it.
Baloney. Just like the Mafia, “Big Earners” are valued quite highly.
Apparently, he doesn’t have the proper Editors in place yet…! Letting that slip out…! ;-)
Cone of Silence my fat butt…I see that serial cheater watching the Obama questions in the limo….
Kinda reminds me of W on the way to the kindergarten on 9/11….he said that he saw the first plane hit the WTC on the teevee…he actually said that….no one vetted it…he said it in a public statement. ummmm….no such footage existed at the time, at least no “public” footage existed…maybe he was watching on the Cone of Silence teevee in the limo…
Same old shizzola.
Liars all of them.
When McCain moves his lips, he’s lyin’ just like the rest of Bushco.
Well, actually, they’d like to keep it healthy enough to be useful cannon fodder and/or stock the shelves at the local MegaMart. Other than that, screw it. Of course, anything much more serious than a paper cut renders the drone unfit for service, and hence ineligible for health care. See how it works?
I saw McCain on TV tonight. He looks like someone jammed a turkey baster sized syringe of botox into his face. His face is a wierd combo of smooth and wrinkly. He looks like he was a winning contestent in Pimp My Cadaver
How vain, McCain.

707!
The best way for McCain to win would be to give each American $5 million every year so we can all be rich and avoid paying taxes. He can fund it by scrapping Medicare and Social Security since none of us will need it and by scrapping plans for his hundred year war because I guarantee nobody pulling down 5 million a year is going to enlist.
Great plan or what?
re: picture above
Are ya feeling constipated?
Do your friends call you “stuck up”?
Are ya in the dark all the time?
———-
McCain Leadership for the Dark Age!
———-
Aside from McCain’s obvious fondness for lobbyists,
especially those of the female persuasion, he also
has a fondness for the military. We could easily expect
him to spend us trillions further into debt to rebuild
what Georgie has broken & thrown away.
Ask him how much he would spend and why?
In light of McCain’s obvious flip-flopping, I’ll bet
he can’t even remember how he’s voted on things in the
Senate. That makes it easier to flip or flop without
feeling awkward.
Ask him about some of those embarrassing votes!
I’ll bet that if you asked him again today what ‘rich’ is
he’d probably come up with another number — completely
forgetting he was asked about it already.
Maybe we should ask him what ‘poor’ is. He would probably be
even more dumbstruck than he was when asked what ‘rich’ is.
Isn’t it pathetic that we have to ask a candidate what ‘rich’
and ‘poor’ are?
Maybe somebody should ask him why he supported every one
of the Bush spending plans which are bankrupting us.
How’s he feel knowing now that it was Sen. Phil Gramm,
his own economics adviser, who created the energy market
speculation loophole which allowed Enron to screw California
and today’s oil speculators to screw all of America on
gasoline prices AND knowing it was Gramm who caused
the crazy housing crisis we’re in?
Maybe somebody should ask him what he thinks of the Bush lies
which got us into Iraq. Does he regret his vote to give Bush
complete power?
Did he vote to allow water-boarding and other tortures?
Did he vote against Senator Webb’s troop rotation bill?
Pin the Bush administration on him and watch him squeal!
It’s been funny watching Team McInsane’s dodging around Panama John’s adultery. They say, “That was 30 years ago!!!” So it doesn’t matter now they say.
Yet, in the same breath they prattle on and on that he got shot down and was captured, and this happened MORE THAN 30 years ago. This trumps all in their minds even it happened well before he cheated on his first wife.
The hypocrisy is even worse when you consider that most of McInsane’s supporters are willing to amend the Constitution to protect the “sanctity of marriage, but ecuse adultery committed by a fellow Repube.
Of course all the contradictions get repeated ad nauseum without any question whatsoever by the Conglomerate Media, and much of the electorate nods along in sheepish agreement. Baaaaah!
And with no spew alert! Hmmmm… could be the next great reality show on Fox…
The problem is at the moment there is not much out there to trust enough to invest in. Why? Because there are fewer people who can afford the goods and services the companies whose stocks are on the stock market produce. My son keeps trying to explain to me that the idea behind not overtaxing the rich etc., is to encourage capital production to enable more companies to hire more people blah, blah, blah. Unfortunately, he does not seem to be able to grasp the idea that with supply side economics, the middle class and underclasses get crushed and if they cannot afford to buy the goods and services, ultimately, as Obama says, pain trickles up. Meanwhile, Rethugs believe that we want to use the tax laws to redistribute wealth; my theory is that so do the Rethugs, but they want to redistribute wealth up.
You would think the whole “cross in the dirt” meme would cause half the stir Hillary’s dodging bullets in Bosnia did.
We need to hit this huge politically this is stupid does John think that nobody would figure this out?
That we will not run ads with John McCain saying no new taxes and then we run the numbers of his actual tax plan.
It would have been better for McCain to not have any healthcare plan at all than for this to come out. This plan makes him look like a liar and makes his no tax supporters look like fools.
There goes the Ron Paul endorsement I don’t see Paul spinning this to the Paulites its to much for them to swallow.
If that still upsets you, I can’t imagine how you feel about the killer trees!
He looks like he was a winning contestant in Pimp My Cadaver
standing “O” !! LOL.
It is an age old story…long before McCheater…it is possible that it happened to him too, it is difficult to prove true or not. But…realizing his facility at lying…like to his wife…and us…well, it is not too farfetched to doubt it…that much is for sure…but there is nowhere to go with the story.
Answering the abortion question and switching the topic by saying let’s return to the previous question about SCOTUS (when the topic had not come up in his questioning)…..well….that is pretty much proof that he knew what Obama had been asked. Creep.
They don’t even care about “life” in the womb either, especially if the pregnant mother lives in a country like say, Iraq, or Iran. “They’ll just grow up to be terrorists anyway!” you’ll probably hear them say.
Absolutely horrific people many of the modern day Repubs are.
Somehow I suspect the only time McCain was close to a cross was when he used one to light a cigar.
I just put on Larry King Live with Rick Warren discussing the Faith Forum. I tuned in to the part where they showed both candidates discussing what rich is, but they did not show the 5 million and up comment that McCain made. Why am I not surprised. Is anyone else watching and did they discuss the cone of silence gate?
We tried supply side economics but now that Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and the banks are in trouble the rich want the tax payers to bail them out and keep them rich.
Ford and GM will be next in line for handouts as will the hedge funds honestly I’m not sure we have the cash to bailout Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae if more of their loans turn bad.
Great post, PW.
The Carpetbagger link includes part of the McCain argument for what they’re doing. They end your ability to ignore your employer’s contribution to health plan as your income, which means your taxable income goes up. That’s the “tax increase.”
So you may have an incentive to stay out of your employer-provided plan and seek a cheaper private health insurance plan. That’s what they want to happen. But they simultaneously give you a tax credit that you can use to pay for that private insurance.
The question becomes, will you be better off or worse off, after you switch from employer-provided plans with no tax to you . . . to personal insurance you purchase with the new tax credit? Answer, first it depends on your tax/income bracket and the cost of private premiums; it’s okay for some, not for others;
Second, even if you start out breaking even, the tax credit doesn’t keep up with the inflation in premiums (as health costs rise), so over time you lose, unless we get health care costs under control.
And in the meantime, we put the insurance companies even more firmly in the middle of the problem.
damn – switched to the Olympics – just in time to *miss* the women’s beach volleyball. No heads-up posted?
Help a brother out, eh?
lol
Misty etc won, two sets.
Help disgustimgly rich people by taxing those earning less than $200K, That 3% that make more than that keep getting break to increas the gap between have and have nots…continue the Bush policies…vote McPain. We love fat pigs they are our pets. It’s the American dream! Proud to have the chance to hog out. So what if were poor we had the chance and a least there is comfort to know some Americans made it. Like Abramhoff, Gates, Buffet, Clinton, Kerry.
Even if they had to take homes away from minorities that worked 40 years to get em, It is patriotic to love the rich after all they cheated, lied and stole hard to get there.
Minor edit for accuracy…
Actually the title, “Cone of Silence” could be quite usefully repeated for a bunch of different ways going foward.
Paste it on McCheater’s forehead. “Conehead of Silence”…heh.
What does John’s plan say if anything about the thousands of 9/11 workers who need health care? Because it does look like George Bush is going to leave that problem to the next President.
The World Trade Center Captive Insurance Co., funded for $1 billion by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in 2003, has settled just six claims out of nearly 9,400 filed by workers who say they are suffering health problems as a result of their jobs.

Heh. Let’s just start to call him McCone…
Very funny. I predict a photoshoped pix coming soon.
Oh, Godess…a premonition…Mr. and Mrs. McConehead:

That explains Cindy’s hair…
“Conehead of Silence”…heh.
I wonder if the original ‘Cone of Silence’ is still available from the old Get Smart show?
He’d look great in that – improve the “quality” of his speeches too….
The money quote from the Warren “debate”.
Warren asked McCain and Obama to “define rich.”
McCain, whose wife is a wealthy brewing heiress, said “I think if you’re just talking about income, how about five million.”
So that would be JUST income. He would up the figure if it included other perks and assets and slush-funds and shelters.
Recall that his campaigns top financial advisor Phil Gramm was VP of US Operations for UBS (United Banc Suisse) which allowed over ten thousand wealthy Americans to illegally conceal about $20 billion from the IRS to evade taxes. UBS created a whole series of methods that they schooled their American clientele on…including using fake corporate losses, phony charities, illegal money drops, untraceable phone numbers, and code words.
Cindy McCain refuses to reveal her taxes (perhaps she has used a few of those “techniques” and has accounts in USB). McCain has supported legislation (e.g. allowing Indian casinos in Arizona to serve beer and alcohol) that clearly enhanced his wife’s business by millions.
McCain…(s)tool of the wealthy.
Heee, heee, heee…this one?

Breaking News:
The McCain campaign claims that John McCain was firmly ensconced in his own personal Cone of Belligerence which kept him from hearing anything other than his own chants for a new cold war and 100 years of occupation in Iraq.

Like a caller noted on Washington Journal…all McCain talks about is WAR!!! That means Death and Destruction.
What a friggin’ lunatic!!!
Every subject twists to death and destruction.
Culture of Cone of Silence…Death, death, death.
Lock the mofo up!!!
Yay!
New Ian post
Ian’s upstairs…
I hope some folks at McSame’s next Town Hall Meeting™ get up to ask questions and just mouth the words with no sound. Then they can say they are in the Cone of Silence.
Cone of Silence is a really funny meme we could continue to push forward. The fact that Rick Davis came back so angrily at Andrea Mitchell means there is something there, I think. Especially since, as KO pointed out, his statement actually refuted none of Mrs Greenspan’s reporting.
I’m retired on less total assets than what Obama called being rich granted I grow my stash faster than I spend it but I got a roof over my head, free time to blog, read and do some Yoga and walk to try and undo the damage from all the years I’ve worked without health insurance.
I count myself rich because I’m making more than I ever did working 2 jobs 7 days a week, well not working both jobs seven days a week just 5 different days with some over lap unless there was over time.
So McInsane is incredibly wealthy by his own definition, and Obama is not wealthy (think he made around $4 mil last year). And they still go around saying Obama, who’s only been in DeeCee a few years and was paying off college loans only a few years ago, is out of touch with working class America, and McInsane, who has been a multi-multi millionaire through much of his 30+ years in Warshington, is “in touch.”
Conglomerate Media repeats this lie every single day without any question whatsoever. We must get more and more people of the Conglomerate Media teat, and plugged into place like FDL.
Does McCain screen his meetings like Bush does for loyalty, if not how can a pup go?
Not having the cash doesn’t seem to be a problem these days. If we aren’t able to put stuff on our credit cards with, say, the Chinese or the Saudis, we will just print more money to cover it. Oops, isn’t that why our dollar is worth so much less now compared to other currencies?
Honestly, I heard that at least one of the big three car makers is expected to go bankrupt this year or next. I don’t see how we can avoid a bailout since that precedent was set years ago when we bailed out Chrysler.
I still don’t understand how they justify privatizing profits but socializing risks and debt. That whole concept sucks.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh…you made me 707
>>Marion in Savannah wonders: “That’s from the Murdoch Street Journal??!!?? Cripes…”
Well, for sake of full disclosure, we should remember that the authors Furman and Goolsbee are Obama economic advisors, and this was an opinion piece, not editorial. Take a look at the “wealth” of the flames in the comments section after the article. WSJ loyalists to the end.
And all that doesn’t even address the problems of people who have “preexisting conditions” etc. I still haven’t wrapped my head around how they think you, as an individual, will find rates out there for comparable insurance products lower than the group rates that your company is able to negotiate. Doesn’t that pretty much deny the competence of private industry to do things better and cheaper than the government could do them?
Is everyone clear that apparently McCain referred to returning to the “previous question on SCOTUS” when asked about when life begins prior to SCOTUS being brought up during “his” questioning????
Is everyone clear that Coneheadgate is about that?
Just checking.
It is huge, and it is on video.
No more bailouts for manufacturers, I don’t think. Just finance and its lovely appendages. Chrysler was stupid to get rid of their finance arm; it would have qualified them for a bailout. Now, not so much.
yup and those creepy eye tics
yup……….drip,drip,drip……treasury leaking all its assets
Biden is a teh cool looking dude imo
Yes, LS – I got your nudge.
Got Charlie Gibson on the phone right now. He’s going to look into that.
;~P
Seriously, though… I’m on the horn tomorrow am to the local rag.
Thanks for the heads-up
I am getting ready to put all my chips on Biden for Veep.
coupla suave dudes, eh?
and dem toofers *sparkle*
Let’s see how Bidenteefies does in Georgia first – if he decides to go at all.
But, but, but Teddy, there is hardly a bigger financier than GMAC, and they appear to be losing their ass on bad debt from their expansion into the mortgage market. The thing is, these days nothing is safe.
And why no more bailouts for manufacturers? I’d put the kibosh on bailing out the financial industry on the basis of, if anyone should know better, they should have. That’s their whole business!
I hope you’re right! My understanding is that the VP’s job is to be the attack dog, and I don’t know anyone who can do that better than Biden. He’s been the flamethrower for years.
