"I am always reluctant to talk about my POW experience…make sure you quote me on that again"
As always, let me give the obligatory I’m sure it must have been hell and it’s compelling. It also ended more than 35 years ago. Don Rumsfeld had been the Secretary of Defense at that time, it certainly didn’t make him a good one all these years later. And that’s literally one-to-one experience not tangential experience.
Nothing becomes a "hero" more than reluctance to be called one. McCain has managed to sell this theme, but he hardly lives it.
Whenever he gets called out or accused of being less than forthright this comes out via his press flack:
“The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous”
Well, that’s a fine line of logic isn’t it?
But it is all part of a pattern.
When called out for a factual error in something so trivial, yet memorable as using dominant pro football teams of an era to patronize he uses the POW card.
He uses the POW Card to push his Cuba policy.
He uses the POW Card to get a forty year old dig in at hippies.
He has used the POW card to say he isn’t a racist, evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.
He has used the POW card to excuse years of voting against issues supporting veterans.
He just used the POW experience again to apparently plagiarize Solzhenitsyn (classy, the guy just died). But then again, how dare I accuse John McCain of this, he was a war hero. Only Democrats with three purple hearts, a bronze star and a silver star, and who actually had to kill a man in personal combat are worthy of being called deceitful or wimps.![]()
And the most shallow of McCain surrogatoes on cable (and is there any other kind?) even excuse cheating on your wife through the POW experience.
When will the press notice?
If you accuse me of naivete I remind you I was sent to my room as a child. On more than one occasion. So really, how dare you!

At the Warren/saddleback confab, he also used the POW card to answer (or not answer) the question of what being a Christian meant to him in his personal belief and living.
I’d be uncomfortable voting for McCain. How do we know that he isn’t the Manchurian candidate? How do we know that person let out of that Vietnamese prison is the same person who went in. A lot of us are just not comfortable, if you know what I mean.
Great post- thanks attaturk.
dugg it.
That woman! I’d almost forgotten..
That
woman!motherfucking ignorant idiot. I’d almost forgotten..Fixed it!
Thx :-)
but…but…Atta, that is the whole purpose behind ”verbal camouflage”, to avoid entering a discussion, avoid an unfavorable fact, to engage smoke and mirrors, destroy knowledge.
A book: UNSPEAK(tm), unspeak 1.n. mode of speach that persuades by stealth. E.g., climate change, war on terror, ethnic clensing, road map. by Steven Poole ISBN 0-316-73100-5 is the best illumination I have encountered re: framing. Poole gets into the motive and goals for using framing.
There will have to be established a fact squad, recording misuse, abuse, and subversion of facts in election campaigns. Give candidates a truth rating going into the poll. That should fix some wagons. ;-)
sorry, forgot manners…….Good morning Attaturk
Karl could attack that POW status…. and benefit.
If the left attempted it – blood bath!!
Ahhhhh, let the old wrinkly demented fella have something, it is the only thing he accomplished on his own in 72 years. There has to be something to fill that void, and the POW status is it. Just think how empty his life actually is. /sympathy for devils
I saw this line:
“The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous”
and thought it was humor. I noticed that you put it in quotes, but still …..
Then I went to the other place, and again saw quotes.
Can American politics have gotten THIS bizarre? That a McCain mouthpiece could actually say that a POW cannot be guilty of cheating? I guess if one murders, he can’t be charged either. Oh! I forgot! That’s just a life. OK — let’s put it this way: A former POW cannot be charged with robbing a bank. Off limits! (Stealing MONEY! That should make the GOP think twice!)
(I don’t know why this stuns me — with all the other BS they throw out there, but it does.)
How many truly stupid Americans just nod and say, “Uh huh — he was a POW — doesn’t matter what else he did before or since — he is off limits”?
You noticed UNSPEAK(TM) at work.
And yes, bizarre is a diplomatic word/way of putting it. Most europeans have known that fact for decades. ;-)
Morning everyone.
Excellent post, Attaturk.
Good Morning!
Amazing how often McCain gets away with talking about what he never talks about. It gets him out of answering just about any inconvenient question put to him.

He was a POW … Gaddammit! He doesn’t even need an election. He wants to be airlifted and placed directly into the oval office …
This puppet uses the POW exaggeration as a deterrent for tough Press …
good morning elliot. wow, a progressive economist on wj? might have to give that a listen. thanks!
It’s also being reported all over the place (at my blog too) that Johnny wasn’t in a “cone of silence” nor was he around for the coin toss at the forum at Saddleback Church, because he was…
OUTSIDE THE BUILDING IN HIS LIMO/STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS BUS!
Yep. Ole Johnny was watching Barack Obama take the questions from Warren on the tv in the limo and didn’t come into the building until it was his time to go on (CNN’s Rick Sanchez reported that their crew said McCain came into the building about half way through Barack’s time).
Rick Warren lied to the nation about the rules of the forum.
Johnny McTeleprompter was in on the scheme.
Assholes, both of them and of everyone connected to them.
And Attaturk! You’re not being fair to ole Johnny. He spent a total of 22 hours flying airplanes before he got shot down and taken prisoner. It’s not nice to point this out and then say, “Oh yeah! Well John Kerry was on a boat as thin as a nickle and his job was to come to shore before the other soldiers did to pave the way for them! Very scary job that soldier Kerry had and he took 3 bullets in the process and could have died at some point!”.
Johnny said the other night at the Saddleback Church forum that dying for our freedoms is the most important thing we can die for. Uh ha. I see. Of course, when he was a prisoner he sang like a bird by making propaganda tapes for the Vietnamese! How come Johnny didn’t say, “I will never turn my back on my country! You’ll have to kill me first before I’d ever do that!”.
Uh oh. Johnny has some explaining to do.
Morning Attaturk,
I was alive during the corporate rumble in the jungle.
Never heard the debate before we declared a war against Vietnam ,McCain ,the mass murder , from a cowardly 30,000′ bombed innocent men, women and children to enhance corporate bottom lines.
Mc Cain and Pastor Warren mislead the American people claiming something they both knew to be a lie.
Mc Cain, like Bush is a Nuremburg flunky,
The Republicans perfected modeling righteous indignation before they rolled out blackbox voting. How dare we question the integrity of those Republicans who make the perfect machines.
I have a cousin who tragically lost her father when she was a young girl. From that day forward she was known as ‘poor Ann’. She’s 55yrs old now and still known as ‘poor Ann’. A lot of bad behavior has been excused over the years because of this. That’s how I regard this POW moniker. It grates on your nerves after a while.
Johnny’s campaign told NBC and other outlets that Johnny did NOT watch any of the televisions in the limo and did not hear one question. Pastor Warren told CNN last night that he believes the McCain campaign when they said he didn’t watch any tv’s or radio broadcasts of the forum. Yeah riiiiiiiiiiiight! Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure they’re telling the truth!
It’s now known Warren & McCain lied to the American people.
Telling lies to cover up lies means ole Johnny is definitely running for George Bush’s 3rd term. The End. Case closed. We need no other proof now.
Personally, I think he got the questions in writing a week ahead of time. He just listened in to see how Obama answered. Not saying Warren gave them to him but I’m sure the McCain camp did everything they could (bribe a staffer?) to get those questions and prep their candidate.
Didn’t McCain violate the rules of the forum by not being in the building before the event began? Isn’t that enough to question his honor? Why isn’t the Obama camp just hammering that point.
“McCain did not honor his promise to be in the cone of silence during Obama’s interview” period.
Now, I really must sign off.
TOTALLY OT but important.
It seems there’s a malicious bug hitting Firefox. Until fixed folks who have another browser might want to use it.
If McCain’s POW experience is relevant these many years later, isn’t his subsequent behavior relevant? Cheating on his first wife, Keating Five, much less the recent lockstep with The Worst President Ever (TM)?
Here’s the CNN interview with Rick Warren where he admits Johnny was in his limo and not even in the building when the coin toss happened:
