JT, IMO AOL sucks big time. They put all manner of arcane proprietary software on ones machine. I recommend BASIC ISP. Perfectly stable, only $6.95/mo for rock stable and fast connection dialup. For email she can use Yahoo! mail. Very reliable, and they do not invade your privacy to the extent that gmail does.

NEW YORK The in-depth new Pew News Consumption Survey, among many other things, gave respondents a three-question current events test. The results showed, for example, that viewers of certain “fake news” shows (Stewart, Colbert) performed better than those who favor many “real news” programs (such as Dobbs, O’Reilly). But what about the overall test scores for all viewers/readers?

Only 53% correctly identified the Democrats as being in control of Congress, with 15% picking the GOP– and 32% not even able to venture a guess.

They did even worse when asked to name our current, longtime (and quite famous) Secretary of State. Only 43% named Condi Rice, 3% IDed someone else — and an amazing 55% could not even take a shot at it.

And how many could name the new British prime minister? Merely 28% named Gordon Brown — and guess who finished second with 5%? Rupert Murdoch. Another 4% were sure it was Robert Gates.

Only 18% correctly answered all 3 questions.

ES, I got a copy of it (Brothers, I loved You All)the other day in an earlier printing which was still sewn in Smyth signatures rather than the mis-named “perfect” (glued) binding of the later editions. Cost me $4.00! My first line copies are in a warehouse because of a fire marshall’s ego, so I am sometimes re-purchasing reading copies of things in lieu of trying to find things amidst about 4500 volumes in storage.

I would look out for a copy of Carruth’s collected shorter poems. It has been remaindered and goes for around six to ten dollars as new. This volume contains most all of Brothers, save for a couple of things Carruth did not want to save. And a couple of things not in the earlier edition of Brothers. I will keep my eyes peeled around here should a copy turn up. I would then grab it and send it to you. You could straighten me out for it then.

I went looking for a copy of Budbill’s Judevine for you today. Came up empty. I always see these things when I do not need them. I have a mental list of things I check each time I visit an antiquarian or used book shop.

I failed to mention John Haines to you the other night. As fine a poet as exists, and a magnificent (really) critic, too. He also homesteaded in Alaska. You will find his stuff when you go looking, at very reasonable prices. Ditto his memoirs of homesteading in Alaska.

Have I told you I love printed books, and written English? ;-)

Running afoul of the moderator usually has to do with perceptions of threats of violence or death dealing. They are extremely sensitive about this. well, all i know is—-is that i’ve learned a lot here, so felt the need to express it…i’ve been a letter writer from my teens on, cspan opened it up, and have been on that road as long as i can remember……don[’t much care that you all understand what i do , but at least wanted to come clean that i have another agenda that i hadbefore i found you all….but finding you all has made my letters more accurate and factual and precise, and for that i can never thank you enough.

You can also run into a wall if you happen to disagree on illegal immigration issues. If you happen to live in an area that has been ‘deflated’ by decreasing housing values and high drop out rates in high schools, well, just shut your trap because this is an illegal immigrant free zone. Wish there were a set of rules, but you learn them by the ruler marks upside your face. Toughen up.

It’s a racket that spirals in on itself. If someone in market X starts using illegally resident labor, the rest will feel that they must do so too, simply to remain competitive. And suddenly they all must, simply to stay in business. And, all of them feel that they, individually, would be driven out of business if the government enforced the laws.

I share some of your frustration on that matter. Several people seem to think that there is no reason other than racism for enforcing borders.

Everything on the illegal immigrant rant is out of wack. It IS true that if construction workers can be hired at lesser wages (whether or not they are actually qualified to do the job), then the lower wage workers get hired. Just-guys get their wages lowered. If housing units rent out every room and have cars parked all over their front yards, then property values go down. Fear infuses the areas. It’s a nasty system and it needs to be addressed. I lived in California in the 1950’s and went to school here. I came back in the mid-60’s and saw changes happening. Came back again in mid 1990’s to a whole different world. I’m still adjusting.

Yeah, I kind of see that but I do not really understand the racism deal. My Mexican friends are as outraged about illegals as others are. When ’slave’ laborers come in, wages go down for the lower earners who have struggled and followed the rules to become immigrants. I’m old enough to get that it isn’t about racism….. it’s about economics.

And I’m weary and going to turn in. Just wanted to post my warning that one shouldn’t poke any bears who are all about open borders and such.

I came in the 60s and things changed rapidly in the next 15 years.

I don’t claim to know the answers, but it is clear that California’s resources are limited. Yet, many here do not believe that we have a moral right to enforce borders.

The interesting thing is that the workers who pick strawberries and celery and parsley and cilantro where I live are wonderful workers…. honest and hard working. I want them to be protected from assault and from what I used to see: end of season, immigration raids, lost wages. There is a way to bring in workers legally, but our govt just isn’t going to let that happen. It’s crazy. Everyone suffers and I can only guess that it is the land owners who benefit.

It seems to me that tonight, for you, is just one of those times when things bottled up burst out. It might be better for you were you to post here when your feelings and thoughts are a bit more settled. Indeed, I have not recently seen you as tonight I have seen you. Isn’t this one of those occasions when, upon re-reading it all next morning, one wishes to make it go away? I suggest that one adopt the same strategy often suggested for those who write love letters in the middle of the night: do not send them until the next day and re-reading.

I am not trying to invalidate you, but I am telling you that your communicative strategies tonight, or want therof, do not get your message across. At least I hope not, because the message as presented tonight is altogether too inchoate to be effective.

IMHO, our problem is that we always look for villians. But the roofing contractor whose competitor hired “illegals” to be the low bidder on more contracts isn’t evil for hiring “illegals” so that he can bid competitively.

Similarly, the Guatemalan roofer whose children are bow-legged from malnutrition isn’t evil for trekking through the desert to get to SoCal to work for a roofer who simply wants to be competitive.

Nor is the American roofer who can’t possibly feed his American family at wages the Guatemalan is willing to work for.

My point is that there is no “truly evil” person in this cycle. Rather it is the cycle that has to be busted. But, the roofers have lobbyists. The immigrants have David Neiwerts. And American construction workers have a lot of votes. So, I don’t see the cycle being broken.

America has always had ambivalence about immigrants. My German relatives in late 1880s had to change their names and so forth. My Irish family were shunned. I don’t know much about my Danish families, but they never seemed to complain about being dissed, as it were. I don’t think it’s about ‘brown’ — except there is some change going on in southern California that is disconcerting. If there were millions of Asians coming in, I think there would be concern, but schools would be doing well! We’ll all be fine in time.

I think that we get a pretty good feel for our interlocutors here, even with their “handles”.

There is too much danger exposing oneself to the nutters out there. Alas, one could get oneself killed! What matter if I talk with “mossrose” or with Mrs D G Smith? Same person, unless one abuses the relative anonymity. And if it comes to a law violation, it is easy enough to determine with whom one has been commenting.
