The wingnutosphere is in top form today, which means that the whinging and moaning and bleating has reached a full-throated roar.
Oh, how awful it is (whine whimper) that NBC and Andrea Mitchell aren’t being "fair and balanced." (See especially the fatuous garbage being peddled at Newsbusters, as well as Red State.) And we all know what that means. Hey, that’s not in the playbook!
And gee, aren’t those liberals just so meaaaaan for implying that Honorable John McCain, the Man With More Honor Than Anyone Evah!!!, might have lifted his "cross in the sand" tale from other sources. See especially American Spectator and Confederate Yankee, as well as Tom Maguire, who whines that liberals are now Swift Boating poor John McCain.
Leave John McCain alooooooone!
Of course, we know what would have happened if either John Kerry or Al Gore had told a story like that: the entire newshours belonging to Chris Matthew, Wolf Blitzer, and Bill O’Reilly would have been spent indulging in speculation about whether the story was really true, or whether their having told it would have revealed something about their deep hidden character flaws. (Gore, the supposed serial prevaricator, especially.)
But that’s because such a story would’ve fit into the prewritten media narratives about those men (Gore the liar, Kerry the not-so-heroic vet). Realizing that John McCain is lifting campaign stories like campaign cookbook recipes cuts against the prewritten media narrative about John McCain (Mr. Honorable and Honor-bound POW Vet of Mavericky Honor).
Funny thing. I wonder how many of these same wingnuts indulged in bashing John Kerry’s military record on far more specious grounds? Like, perhaps, every last one of them? (Maguire does duly note call himself "a proud Swiftboater myself," but doesn’t seem to realize how bereft of a leg upon which to stand this leaves him.)
Mmmmmm. Smells like … victory.

I only hope that soon the accumulated weight of bullshit will cause the wall to come tumbling down. Sorta like when the Press Atlas Shrugged.
“At long last, have you no decency?”
I am inclined to believe that McCain’s past narrative is comprised entirely of borrowed chestnuts. It is doubtful that at this point even he knows what is true. The man can’t remember what he did or said six months ago (or this morning), should we believe he can recall accurately events of forty years ago?
I dont see how the nytimes gets out of a correction for the errors about “cone of silence” in the Kristol column. Sure he softened his charge online and in the national edition, BUT he still said in the NY edition that there was no basis for claiming that Mcsame “wasn’t in the cone of silence.”
except that is what the NYTimes own story said.
they need a correction tomorrow in print for the print readers in their hometown.
It’s like Reagan, done the McNasty way.
It would be interesting to see what some of these wingnuts were saying about McInsane during the Repube primary season, before Panama John became the frontrunner.
I’m sure several were attacking McInsane at the time, and since they’re good at personal and childish attacks, I’d be all for using their own lines against them now.
I am growing increasingly pessimistic about the outcome of the election. all of the media-driven narratives, coupled with the dog-whistle rethug campaign tactics, seem to unfolding right on cue.
hey david–this is what i sent out on the spotlight program with jane’s post this morning—sent a few different versions…
i brought up how they-the media and everyone else, vilified hillary 24/7, and then for months after, for her story about being ’shot at’ in bosnia…what mccain did is beyond the pale.
nice post–gotta go, bbl.
====
Why is this not on my tv right now? It deserves as much coverage as Hillary’s being ’shot at’ in Bosnia, if not more.
McCain was caught plagiarizing his Georgia remarks from wiki last week, and now this.
But this time, he speaks of it as his own personal experience, this is different. Much more egregious than plagiarizing recipes or foreign policy remarks.
I would think someone would be ‘all over this’, considering it was said this time in a church and to a pastor. Straight-faced.A much bigger issue than whether he heard Obama’s first half-hour of the forum.
Sincerely,
D——-

In 2000, all the rethugs said that McCain was insane. Too unstable to be president. They rallied around the idiot frat boy. In 08, McCain is not crazy anymore (miraculously cured?) and frat boy wasn’t really quite sharp enough after all.
Don’t give up yet. I think the polls simply reflect the way people are inclined to vote without providing any evidence that they intend to vote. The right-wing (and much of the MSM) might be reflexively defending McCain but there is no genuine enthusiasm among Republican voters. Barring some catastrophe, I expect them to stay home in droves on election day.
Funny thing. I wonder how many of these same wingnuts indulged in bashing John Kerry’s military record on far more specious grounds? Like, perhaps, every last one of them? (Maguire does duly note call himself “a proud Swiftboater myself,” but doesn’t seem to realize how bereft of a leg upon which to stand this leaves him.
I want T Boone to get no Government money for his windmills for being a swift boater.
I want the rest of the SwiftBoaters puppet masters targeted.
Hmmmmm. Here is what Mitchell said:
Mitchell correctly reported a claim by a presidential campaign, which is de facto news, whether or not that claim is true.
But we have video of Rick Warren admitting the correctness of that claim that “[McCain] may have had some ability to overhear …” and we have Warren’s transcripts of the the event itself, where he says to McCain: “YOU GOT ALL MY QUESTIONS, GOOD.”
So yet again the right-wing whores are in the streets indignantly screaming, “How dare you impugn my virtue!”
Was Rev. Ricky –rhymes with Maver-icky?– complicit in the McCain prepping? Or was he a dupe?
Question easy to ask tonight on Larry King Live…or Nightline… fits right on one of those blue cards….
Maver-icky Macaca Moment 4 McCain?
To the wingnut whiners: Cry me a river.
To punaise @ 6: I think the McSame camp has gone negative way too early and it’s going to bite them in the ass. Appears to me that the Obama campaign is waiting for the right time to hit back – just before the election. Politics is like comedy, timing is everything.
and frat boy wasn’t really quite sharp enough after all.
Even with that sneaky bulging out of his left shoulder during one of the Gore debates.
We should ask McCain if he would support a swift boater like T Boone with government subsidies for his windmills.
Truly love your “Get the facts – Scientology Video Channel” advert /s
Me, too. But Obama himself always said it was going to be a close fight. I think we just have to live with that and hope for the best. The good news, I suppose, is that Obama made his peace with T. Boone Pickens. If it takes a deal with the super-rich to keep us all from being incinerated, I’m ready to pay the price. My reading is that Obama knows better than the rest of us how this nation is really run, and is shoring up his creds with the true powers-that-be in this country, who I suspect distrust McCain deeply.
We are so far gone towards fascism as a nation, that we have to be thankful, if not joyful, for little positive steps.
it WAS the freepers who done Maverick wrong . . .in December 2005
Big Orange
It’s hard to target those who have so much money they can afford not to give a shit. The mouthpieces that we see and read we could possibly pressure out but the paymasters would just place them somewhere else and we’re back where we started. The only real way to get the paymasters is to dig up their financial shenanigans, hopefully some of which would prove to be illegal.
I hope you’re right. watching the state-by-state picture slip daily at fivethirtyeight.com is cause for current concern. Nov. 4 is an eternity away.
“YOU GOT ALL MY QUESTIONS, GOOD.”
I would love to hear McCain explain that one.
I left a comment to Blue Texan’s post earlier that was kind of late and a little rambling so it probably didn’t get read but the gist was as follows.
Warren’s questions were scripted to mesh so well with McCain’s stump speech that it wouldn’t matter if he knew them in advance. Upon hearing the question, all McCain had to do was plug in the corresponding talking point.
Well T Boone wants the Federal Government or the Texas Power utility customers to pay for high power transmission lines so he can sell his wind power.
I think Texas is raising the rates they charge for power, if the rate increase is to help T Boone I think thats illegal.
LOL!
I loves me some words from David Neiwert early in the morning!
Especially on a Monday.
Put’s a positive spin on the whole week.
Great stuff, David.
Thank you. For the “write”, and for the laughs.
An excellent point (which had slipped by me). Thanks.
How about Rick Warren explaining it
Great post, David! Those rethugs sure have a lot of nerve!
Obama has been out of the picture for almost two weeks. McSFB has taken advantage of that absence. Now that Obama’s back on the line I think the numbers will reflect it. Remember, polls don’t track those with cell phones and the young ones are the ones with the hammer this time around. McSFB can have what seniors, and the fools at the VFW, he can convince that he won’t privatize SS. I’ll take the youth.
How many people like me with cell phones are not counted? And no I normally don’t answer computer polls online because I worry about viruses can you catch a virus like that?
Regardless I’m sure that I’m not the only one not counted.
Exactly the point. I forget the exact numbers, but if memory serves a relatively large percentage of voters don’t make up their minds until the week before the election. The pollsters push for “leaners” and then report it as gospel – they have to make a living, you know.
Texas is on a different planet when it comes to politics.
1,738 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Knut:
“We are so far gone toward fascism as a nation, that we have to be thankful, if not jopyful, for little positive steps.”
Yes we are “far gone toward fascism”…in fact we ARE fascist and have been for at least 28 years and more likely since the Fall of 1963. But no we don’t need to “be thankful…for little positive steps.” There is no “evolving” out of fascism, there is no “growing” out of fascism, there is no “compromising” out of fascism – there is only killing the beast. Our social and political institutions have been hollowed out and our comonwealth has been transferred to offshore accounts…no Citizen Knut, you don’t be thankful to coexist with insanity.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE WAR IS NOW IN YOUR LIVINGROOM!
Will the MSM ask the tough questions?
For what it is worth I have seen some recent polls to the effect that the youth interest is waning
bonkers – if I posted only 1/3 of the fact based links of the Real McCain as posted by the righties – it would severely slow or shut down the servers here
That was for punaise @ 20. Geez.
Tougher and tougher questions of Obama are sure to come, especially about religion and race.
Oh, he remembers it! Just like Hillary remembered being fired upon when they disembarked that plane. She even remembered ducking her head and running.
McSame no longer knows how much of what he says is true and how much is “campaign rhetoric.”
Ultimately, the cost of the grid is paid by the taxpayers and/or the rate payers. When it’s all said and done, the money has to come from somewhere.
Well, on second thought, maybe we can borrow the money from the Chinese and pay them back in devalued dollars. ;-)
with no empirical evidence to support it, my gut feeling is that the 2% (?) non-landline polling discrepancy at best blunts the Bradley/Wilder effect.
Maybe we will get lucky and T Boone will lose money as the the banks and hedgefunds collapse.

TCU – There is the opportunity to call in on Larry King tonight
The Texas state legislature is about as corrupt as any around. I remember several years ago when the Texas AG tried to crack down on wealthy real estate
maggotsmagnates who were mortgaging worthless undeveloped parcels of land to Mexican immigrants at exorbitant rates, then evicting them when they missed a payment and selling it to somebody else. It turned out the people profiting had a lot of influence over or even included state legislators, so nothing got done. You are on a roll, my man. Get some.
He does so in this video.

Texas should not pay for high power transmission lines that send power out of the state. I think T Boone wants to get in on Enron type power selling action.
I did not watch the Warren Commission Saddleback Christopath Faith Showcase. I boycotted it. The founding fathers would roll over in their graves to see how far we’ve reverted from the Principles they espoused. Faith Forum for Presidential Candidates? How incredibly ignorant and superstitious. How could Obama not have known that the Rethugs would cheat?
I’m sure Larry screens the calls but hey if you want feel free to try.
Reply not worketh now.
Now yer talkin’. The only entity slated to benefit from this crap is T Boone hissef.
Of course he does. Pickens wants to be the new Ken Lay.
Ands thats how we can trap him.
APPARENTLY all ya neede was a circa 1950 transistor radio !!!!!!!!!

I made a huge mistake and turned on the Olympics 7 Sat evening. How could I have been so misguided. /snort
And even if they didn’t cheat, this was not his forum.
There’s an old maxim in politics: “If you’re explaining, you’re losing.” And, Obama went in there explaining some how believing that he’s an going to be an exception.
And miss the Rays/Rangers game? Waddya…crazy or sumpum?
from Chambers Maxi Paperback Dictionary

This very reply seems to be fine.

WHile live blogging Blue Texan said of Obama “he was at ease, confident, and no questions caught him off guard.” Sounds pretty good to me and I think was exactly what he intended to show.
take care pal!
Did anyone see Hip Hop Artist Nas on Tavis Smiley? They talked about Obama. Obama wants to keep the rappers’ support on the down low. Obama don’t want our support and we understand why. Obama got to deal with different kinds of people. But Nas insisted that “we are going to own everything”.
Lets start the “Airboating” of Mc Pain… He did crash five yes five jet aircraft, that alone shows he was a terrible pilot and got deferential treatment. Any other pilot would have been grounded after two or three crashes… It just defies the odds that the crashes could have all been because of mechanical problems. A good pilot he never was his graduation raking in any class he attended show that he was less than the average and always at the bottom of the class. DO WE WANT John for our President???
the Corporate/Fascist media will try to portray him as overconfident uppity and elitist………….evil bastids
let us pray he gets his wish
Mmmmmm. Smells like … victory.
Sadly, as both Pat Lang and yours truly have lamented, these whiners probably resonate with the voters more than realists.
they need a correction tomorrow in print for the print readers in their hometown.
I believe that The Times has grown accustomed to, and probably at this point just sets aside some space ahead of time, for the weekly apology and corrections for Kristol’s column.
In an interview on CNN Warren said that it was just what he expected. McCain came with ready responses while Obama was thoughtful.
Gee who would want a pres. that wastes time thinking
More cowboy. We need more cowboy! /s
Texas was just the petri dish, Florida was the designated womb *g*
Hi, I have been out most of the day and maybe somebody else has mentioned that, on ABC politics page.. http://abcnews.go.com/politicsAbc
While talking about VP Picks these are the captions from McCain “Who Will Be McCain’s Second-In-Command?” Now for Obama the caption is “Parsing Obama’s Vice Presidential Picks”strong>> Why does John McCain get a second in command if he is president? Is he planning on leading a military state?
Obama spent a great deal of time (confidently) equivocating. For instance, in answering the define-marriage question, he never came to grips with the central question of whether states should recognize gay civil unions as “marriages.” McCain had no similar problem. He did not appear to be dancing around that issue.
The whole cross in the sand story is SO Reagan, who was famous for confusing movie script lines with his own actual experiences. I guess McLame is just trying to win one for the Gipper, right?
Bob in HI
The one thing that came through loud and clear for me at the saddleback joke forum is how much of a war monger McInsane is. Not sure where he’ll get the money or manpower to fight his wars should diebold elect him.
That’s because republics have no issue with the denial of civil rights for anyone different from them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdJUCU1UH2w
the Maverick merely sampled Solzhenitsyn :D
Because that’s the narrative: “McCain is highly experienced commander-in-chief material.” Meanwile, Obama is “nuancing,” “parsing,” and “triangulating.” (Oops. No. “Trianguate” is a verb that applies only to Hillary.)
Damn, it’s disgusting how meticulously the MSM adheres the the RNC narrative.
No! That because Obama has issues with proclaiming civil rights for someone. He could damn well have insisted that gays have exactly the same right to marriage as straights. But he didn’t.
This is a wonderful case study in the right’s strategy for handling legitimate criticism of their candidate. The playbook is wide open.
Skyboxes for Obama’s acceptance speech are going fast at $1 million each. Anybody want to split one?
Mike,
don’t know if you have seen this 2/08 interview yet. Cliff Schecter vouches for the guy
Matt Welch
(my bold)
interesting in that reading through the transcript, despite everything he’s researched, it’s obvious Welch himself doesn’t connect all the dots – Maverickthemia is one pernicious beast
Must be a lot of rich folks thinking that clown from Dobson’s church will be successful
Thanks for the linky
Newly Minted Front Pager upstairs
c’mon up and say howdy
On the other hand, Obama is NOT known for being very good at unscripted question and answer. He is good with prepared speechifying but NOT in straight-up debate.
He may simply have sucked worse than McInsane in this venue. Afterall, the dog whistle stuff is entirely part of the GOP “brand”. They know, a priori, what the magic questions and answers are. They’ve been at that same schtick for decades.
So, we have a rather sucky Obama in impromptu q-n-a, and an abysmal McInsane who is coached and drilled on the proper GOP answer to all things Jaysus! and warmongering and “patriotism”. He can suck all he can in an uncontrolled environment but when in the very belly of the GOP beast (the “Jaysus! Mega-Church Hypocrite Ignoramus Corporation”) he can’t suck worse than a non-GOPer (at least in name…Obama IS GOP in overall temperament and leanings).
I agree, but … how could Obama not have anticipated questions about rights of the unborn and the rights of gays to marry? What sentient American, what drunk in any bar, did not see that coming? Yet he gave answers that sounded like he was making them up in real time.
IMHO, he was overconfident and underprepared, like all post-1980 Demcoratic candidates have been (with the exception of Bill Clinton). They seems to get wrong-footed over the most obvious things.
YES, you are correct. But the problem is not everyone on the left agrees with that. IMO if we are all created equal then absolutely everyone should have the same rights.
Christy a couple of flights upstairs
Perhaps a sign that Obama is actually worse than he is already known to be in imprompt/unscripted debate or q-n-a. Perhaps he showed a bit of what really is inside, and it may not be all that great. The questions ARE obvious and the answers should be second nature (and NOT contrived to thread some bogus, imagined “center” as defined by the DLC). The fact that he did stumble on such simple, obvious questions may say a lot (and it isn’t good).
But here, Dave, will be the difference. Look for NBC to issue some sort of “clarification” on this so as to make clear that they don’t believe any such thing. And that they “really do think that McCain is swell” and that by no means did they intend to impugn his status as a real, true American hero. And don’t be surprised if Andrea Mitchell soft-pedals some sort of “recantation” in which she says she was “misunderstood”.
That is how things are different in this bizarro world today. The wingnuts whining about things which have absolutely no merit will get results. The Democrats and liberals attempts to point out, you know……….ACTUAL FACTS will always be met with tut-tutting and apathy on the part of the corporate media.
The wingnuts do it because IT WORKS FOR THEM! In the end, they will get what they want from the corporate media. Unlike Democrats and liberals, who are always painted as deranged, angry and living in some delusional fantasy world.
I wish I could also believe that it “Smells……..like victory”. Somehow I think history will once again be repeated here. And all we will be able to do is shake our heads in disbelief as all the wingnuts and their media cohorts get another good laugh at the Dems expense.
OT
Scott Horton has a very insightful post on the trials at Gitmo.
Take the time read this… He is as usual spot on and illustrates how this administration is trying to use these trials for Political Gain…
