First, Rick Warren should moderate one of the fall presidential debates.[…]

Second, it was McCain’s night.

Obama made no big mistakes. But his tendency to somewhat windy generalities meant he wasn’t particularly compelling. McCain, who went second, was crisp by contrast, and his anecdotes colorful.

Now I’m not entirely unbiased (!), so I don’t quite trust my initial judgment in such matters. But it was confirmed the next morning. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported on “Meet the Press” that “the Obama people must feel that he didn’t do quite as well as they might have wanted to in that context. … What they’re putting out privately is that McCain … may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama.”

There’s no evidence that McCain had any such advantage. But the fact that Obama’s people made this suggestion means they know McCain outperformed him.

But when they hit the FL Straits, they can intensify fast…in 2004, Charle went from a Cat 1 to a Cat 5 in six hours, and came ashore as a strong Cat 4.
That’s what I’m afraid of. We’ll know tomorrow.

I’m just south of Tampa, maybe a mile from the coast. A Cat 4 storm surge would put fifteen feet of water in my front yard…Welcome to Cape Coral-beautiful town. Keep a close eye on the radar tomorrow-these things can turn suddenly, and be in your face when it’s too late to leave. If going to a hotel/motel, always get on the second floor. The first floor floods, and the third floor gets the roof ripped off.

i really got spoiled by the ben lomond market which featured lots locally grown items, from chickens to eggs to produce. they had a real meat dept with guys in white behind the counter who were actually butchers (and not just glorified meat wrappers). i think that market is what i’m gonna miss most (laughing)

I have done Typhoons in mid Pacific but this is my first Cane here. Being oxygen dependent makes it not as easy as I would like but have a generator and we are as well prepared as the Cane booklet said to be.

We kind of have an embarrassment of riches in pdx (have a sunday farmers market a 10 min walk from home along with the bigger players). What we’re completely jazzed about is the opening of only the second ‘Food Front’ organic co-op selling mostly locally grown and produced products.

I’d argue that you still get the freshest seafood, though.

newport is at the far southern end of my search area. i wanna be closer than 2 1/2 hours to portland but not too close.

Here’s an introduction to that subject. The recommendation is to either have a proper transfer switch or just wire the things you want to run directly to the generator (IOW, use extension cords). That recommendation is based on the recent National Electrical Code, apparently.

Visited a nieghbor who has two dogs a big big red Irish Setter (130 lbs) and a young wiggly girl looks lab all balck and full of love. They were wondering where the hech Blackjack was and went to my car to check it out.

But a Frisco man says his truck is being targeted simply because his homeowners association doesn’t think it’s classy enough.

Jim Greenwood said he never dreamed his HOA would have a problem with his new Ford F-150 pickup. Then he received the first of three notices threatening him with fines.

“Mr. Greenwood, you’re violating a subdivision rule that prohibits pickup trucks in your driveway,” the notice reads.

Stonebriar HOA rules allow several luxury trucks on driveways, including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Avalanche, Honda Ridgeline and Lincoln Mark LT.

But most Ford, Dodge or Chevy pickups are restricted.

“It’s very frustrating and confusing. It’s hard to imagine how an HOA would try to dictate what type of vehicle you can drive and park in your driveway,” Mr. Greenwood said.

Bill Osborn of the HOA board said the association also prohibits boats, trailers, golf carts and RVs in driveways.

“The high-end vehicles that are allowed are plush with amenities and covers on the back. It doesn’t look like a pickup,” he said. “It’s fancier.”

Simply put, McCain took at stand, and Obama blithered, equivocated, and talked around the issue. Either he favors allowing same-sex “civil unions” should be legally recognized as “marriages,” or not. He seemed unable to make up his mind.

IMHO, Obama lost ground with the majority of voters for that. He did not look decisive and presidential.

i think bugs and sam were the best of the wb cartoon stable – those two played off each other better than any other pairing. elmer and daffy just cant hold a candle to the way sam and bugs go after each other.

HOAs are proof that Satan is real. I have a relative who ended up as president of one, and for enforcing the dumbass rules, is now on the receiving end of an anti-discrimination suit.

You might have missed a late post I made last week, but pacific city is worth looking at. it’s quiet for being on the coast because hwy101 ducks inland where it is so there is no through traffic. one light in town that is blinking red, if memory serves. there’s a haystack rock in the surf. in addition to the ocean, pc also has the nestucca river run through it as it meets the pacific. it’s about 20 south of tillamook on a back road, but I think there’s good enough shopping in tillamook. from tillamook, portland is less than 2 hours, albeit through a pass in the coast range.

Oh yeah, forgot. And then he should’ve danced offstage, because you just can’t top that. I guarantee you he’d win in a landslide if he did that.

Speaking of high diving– well, swimming anyway, I’m amazed at Mike Phelp’s achievement. I wonder if he will change competitive swimming forever! Interesting conversation on the radio about Phelps’ “dolphin” kick, reinforced later by underwater cameras looking up at him.

The regular swimming kick is to alternate feet, which creates an extraordinary amount of turbulence, which creates drag. Phelps’ dolphin kick keeps both feet together, and the body undulates, like the dolphin swimming motion. This creates virtually no turbulence. It also stresses a whole different set of muscles (abdominals?) and must be tiring to do for very long.

The other thing was how Phelps won his seventh(?) medal. The swimmer in the next lane looked like he would win; but he was coasting to the finish wall. Phelps ended with a kick and a lunge above the water line, winning by 1/100th of a second. Incredible.

that’s sorta the area i’ve been thinking about. gotta see what the road is like between tillamook and portland and then compare it to the one that runs outta lincoln city.

Both camps should have seen that marriage question coming. It was inexcusable for Obama to go in there with anything less that a fully prepared and focus-group tested answer. (But, in fact, I think it was stupid to accept that invitation in the first place.)

There were, however, some far less obvious questions where McCain seemed to have rehearsed carefully crafted answers. I was convinced that he had advance information, even before the evidence came out.

I’ve got $10.00 towards that ad who will match that? Oh well it was a copyright violation probably. (So how does the lake get to show it?)

I beg to differ. McCain’s answers helped him with the Republican extremist base. With that demographic, McCain definitely won handily over Obama– but Obama didn’t have a chance with that group anyway.

But with independents, and even with some evangelicals, I think Obama won. Obama’s major task in the months ahead is to help voters feel comfortable with him. I think he did that yesterday.

Obama waffles a lot! Here we all are waiting for someone to step-the-f#ck up and he just won’t do it. I would like to blame his ‘handlers’ — but, hey, he’s the candidate. He will either stand up or not. Everytime I get a request from Obama for money, I send back a response in their postage paid envelope that I will not support him financially until he supports the Constitution and stands up for America. I send money to Blue America candidates instead. I’m so disheartened by another wimp who won’t stand up for principles.

If you score it as a debate, there’s probably no question. But racking up debate points should not be a candidates objective at this time. To uncomitted voters, I believe that McCain looked better than he had in the past, and Obama looked lamer than he had in the past.

to clarify, it’s about an hour and 40 min to pdx from pc and 20 min from pc to tillamook. the drive from tillamook to pdx through the coast range (tillamook wilderness) is pretty amazing on its own and is a well made road. traffic is much less through this pass compared to the pdx to cannon beach/manzanita/seaside pass (hwy26) where all the tourists and quickest fixers go to get to the coast. I have more to learn about all the places, but the tillamook area as a hub is definitely worth investigating. pc is right in between tillamook and lincoln city.

Yes. He did stumble on that answer. I think he was genuine in his answer, though. He genuinely cannot say that he supports same sex marriage and be elected, but he cannot piss off a huge chunk of his base either.

I don’t think Obama’s aim was to get evangelicals (duh), and I don’t believe it was intended to “get” undecided middle voters.
I think it was to generally assuage the whole country and the resulting press attention that follows, that he is not scary, foreign, elite, other. It was part of a process, and I think he was largely successful. And if he does as he did today, attack McCheese at his core, he will have made it work for him over time.

Part of cutting McCheese down to size is dismissing McCain’s disgraceful main plank – that ‘Obama isn’t one of us.’

I felt that Team Obama sort of threw Clark under the bus for saying that getting shot down in combat does not constitute qualifications to be president. IMHO, it was shameful what they did. Especially so, since it constituted caving to yet another highly coordinated faux-indignation attack by the wingers. (The only honorable response is to counter-punch by questioning their sincerity — make them the story.)

On MTP 2-3 weeks ago in a pairing of Kerry and HoJo, Kerry correctly pointed out that the surge was intended to establish a window for political progress and reconciliation to occur -which has not occurred to date. Lieberloser resorted to lying about the success of the surge by claiming “15 of 18 benchmarks had been met“. Kerry missed a golden opportunity to body slam HoJo by pointing out that only ill-defined “progress” had been made in 15 0f 18, not achievement of 15.

But the point remains, this is an airtight response to false claims about the surge that needs to be hammered mercilessly.

Hope you’re being overly cautious. Obama’s campaign has been brilliant so far, outside of the last week. Hope they know something we don’t. Maybe they’re just letting McCane be himself and say lots of stupidos. For later use in commercials.
