This is old news, but it’s utterly hilarious:
Ron Paul is moving his so-called Rally for the Republic from the University of Minnesota’s Williams Arena to the Target Center in Minneapolis.
In an e-mail to supporters, Paul said he made the move after measuring the excitement and enthusiasm of his supporters. That means the campaign expects 15,000 people to fill the arena, 4,000 more than could have attended at the university.
"We would not have put all of our cards on the table if we weren’t very very confident that we would fill the Target Center," said Jesse Benton — the spokesman for Paul’s Campaign for Liberty group.
Why is this hilarious? Because the 15,000 figure given in the MPR piece is almost certainly an underestimate. In reality, the Target Center can hold more people than the Xcel Center, which is the venue where the Republican National Convention will be held at the same time as the Paul rally.
With an official capacity of 20,500 persons when used as a basketball arena, the Target Center holds nearly 2,500 more folks than the Xcel, which officially weighs in at 18,064 (though they did shoehorn over 20,000 in for Shania Twain in 2003, using a configuration that the RNC is unlikely to emulate). Even set up for concerts, which is probably how the Paul people will have it configured, it can hold as many as 19,500 persons — nearly 1,500 more than the Xcel’s official capacity.
Does anyone doubt that Ron Paul can fill the Target Center? Especially with former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura as one of the headliners? Hell, even Tucker Carlson is going to be there.
So how will the national press handle this? If Ron Paul outdraws John McCain, will they give it the slightest bit of attention? Or will they throw it on the Big Pile of Ignoring onto which they toss anything that doesn’t give all glory to Mr. Cranky? Inquiring minds want to know.

Morning, PW. They will probably ignore it. It will be like trying to ignore an elephant in your living room but the press does neat tricks like that.
Is that the cat that ate the canary?
good morning pw.
how far apart are they? will they cause traffic hell for the official repiglicans?
The media will give it about as much attention as Kucinich’s impeachment hearings which Ive read was filled with media but little coverage. f**k ‘em all.
On the other hand maybe Jon Stewart will provide coverage.
yeah, the for-profit media has little incentive to follow that sort of news
BTW the FBI is saying it will release its forensic evidence in the anthrax case against Ivins next week. It was previewed to some Congresspeople and they weren’t impressed.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08…..ref=slogin
PW, great post. Extremely funny and picture perfect, too!
Wow, that’s freakin’ hilarious.
If it happens but the SCLM doesn’t cover it, then it can be truthfully said that it didn’t happen. It will be another case of st. john should have nothing bad written about him (in this case Ron Paul’s ability to create an alternate). After all, his foreign policy toward Georgia hasn’t drawn the screaming pundits as pelosi’s trip to the ME did.
Kitty toe jam. Look at that little pink nose. Criminally cute.
morning PW, that giggling kitty is, well, giggly — like your post.
There have been rumblings in AZ about a Ron Paul revolution take over at the RNC Convention….. Still see an occasional RonPaul08 signs … talking of plans of having their delegates disrupt the voting and taking down McBush…
because he hasn’t been considered a viable candidate there has been no vetting
democrats actually like ron paul, (till I inform them what his policies actually mean)
ron paul will get all the anti bush voters who would never vote for a democrat
Has Paul endorsed anyone yet? Will he? Isn’t he closer to Bob Barr than the current configuration of the Rethug party? Why didn’t he just run as a Libertarian to begin with; that would have made it a viable third party race. Jesse Ventura’s gonna be there too, huh? I sure hope they get some TV coverage ‘cuz it’s bound to be a better show than the Repug convention. I might even consider watching just for the fun of it!
After some deliberation, the kitty concludes that the media will focus exclusively on the RNC. Just what I would expect from a fat cat.
Here’s is what the Republicans have taken us back to and RonPaul would keep us there: Orig 1937 Depression Dust Bowl Refugee California Photo
Uprooted and displaced and it isn’t the government responsiblity.
We ought to ask, petition, even beg, Cspan to cover it. If not, surely there will be independents that will cover it. This should get at least as much attention as the YKos conventions. The contrast between the Rethug and Paul conventions should be really interesting: the Paul convention generates more enthusiasm; the Rethug convention tells more lies, etc.
Paul is a philosophically a libertarian but technically a Republican. My guess is he won’t endorse McCain and will refrain from endorsing Barr, lest the leadership strip him of his committee assignments. Paul serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Joint Economic Committee, the Committee on Financial Services, Trade and Technology subcommittee, and Vice-Chair of the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee.
Good Morning PW -
hmmmm, now what can the Paulists do to get media attention ?
streak the Xcel en masse
have Paris Hilton as Keynote Speaker
use the Constitution as confetti (no wait ! Cheney’s gonna do that during his screed)
can always throw some kittens or ducklings down a sewer drain and “rescue” them
anyone ?
Jesse Ventura *and* Tucker Carlson? Together at the same event?
Road Trip!!!
(to anywhere but Minneapolis). heh.
“libertarians” are anarchists, they are fine with the laws that they like, they just don’t like the laws that force them into paying their own bills
they use “personal liberty” as their marketing tool and then they make believe corporations should enjoy the same liberty as people
they are fine with the “regulations” that allow them property and ownership, law and order but they are not fine with the regulations that force them into paying for the roads they use or force them into cleaning up the crap they dump in my kids lungs
a blimp!
Are there gonna be free-speech cages at the Repub Natl Convention?
Are reservations required?
I bet that cat doesn’t relieve himself on his human’s couch like someone at our house who shall remain anonymous.
what up with these people anyway? where are the Paultards going this election? None to BO, right? They’ll probably go to McCain in about same numbers as they went to Bush, no? Anybody think they can hurt McCain at all? I don’t know much about what they’ve been doing since they plastered signs all around here for the primary in january.
Granted, but we’re not thinking about joining Paul’s side. I would just like to have some fun and cause some confusion for wavering Rethugs. The fact that Paul can glean as much attention as he has should be the best thing for our side. In fact, this is as close as I’ve come to uninhibited glee in a long time. Let’s see, a three way split of the Republic party certainly seems as if they are coming apart at the seems, so to speak. And that would affect us how? Hehehe!
I can’t decide if watching while gangs of RNC goons club a bunch of naked old men would boost their cause or the GOP’s.
true story o/t
I put on my tv this a.m. C-SPAN. Washington Journal. Sound was off. Captions on. No graphics. Now understand, the Olympics are about the only TV I’ve been watching lately. So there’s some odd looking guy on with white hair and a really bad haircut. Don’t recognize him. I’m all alone in the room so I feel free to say what I want. So I say “Who’s this douchebag?” It was Jerome Corsi. Pretty good douchebag instinct i have if I do say.
If I had to choose between Paul and McSame, I would choose Paul. Libertarianism has some intellectual legitimacy. McSame has a vacuous philosophy manipulated for political convenience. *Disclaimer: I will be voting for Obama*
So how will the national press handle this? If Ron Paul outdraws John McCain, will they give it the slightest bit of attention?
They will ignore it or lie if the numbers are close, still just how many can Obama cram into that Stadium he plans at speaking at to get the nomination.
Imagine if the crowd inside and outside the stadium is bigger that the GOP and Ron Paul crowds.
I expect McCain to welcome the Ron Paul people and speak at Ron Paul’s convention but what would McCain have to sell to win the Ron Paul people?
Its going to have to be something big to win the Paulites, like mass deportations of all immigrants back to Mexico.
When my nephew complained that his cat was doing that and he wanted to get rid of her because of it, his wife finally took the cat to the vet and found out that she had a serious medical problem that was treatable. As soon as she was treated, she stopped doing that and went back to using the kitty litter as if nothing had happened. Apparently it hurt her to pee, so she would wait until her bladder just let it leak out where ever she was laying.
I hope Couric gets the assignment of covering that. She deserves it.
that’s a really tough one. But if someone was waterboarding me until i made a choice, i’d choose Paul, too.
How by pushing the McCain is Senile issue?
They’ve got to quit using the Junior G-Man Crime Kit to collect and test evidence. They need the Bat Man kit. Can’t have them trying to exceed their skill level.
I think protesters are required to limit their activity to a designated area (just across the border in Ontario).
I can’t believe that’s not getting any coverage. the guy is just a step behind. isn’t that kinda important? are those sunglasses he wears because of a medical condition or does he choose to wear them.
wow! Major thunderstorm just rolled in
She did have a bladder infection and she’s had a full course of antibiotics. I’ll be taking her back to her doctor this week. But she has been marking sporadically since we adopted her several years ago, so I think it may be spite.
I see plenty of Ron Paul bumper stickers. Have yet to see a McSFB sticker. Been a while since I’ve seen a “W” sticker too.
I know this is good news for the Republicans.
It always is, you know. I just can’t figure out how.
The drugs he’s taking dilate his eyes
I’ll bet Rachel and Keith will cover it.
Anybody see todays WaPo article regarding a proposed expansion of domestic spying?
What kinds of medical conditions would require sunglasses? Speculating on McCain’s health is important because the GOP might decide to replace McCain and given the number of gaffes McCain has made almost anyone would do better than McCain against Obama now.
Anyway thats my biggest worry next to Obama going any further to the center.
I take it you don’t watch tv much? :)
Yep. Unlike the Dems the Rethugs have no problem tossing one who doesn’t toe the line. Are ya listenin’, Harry? Blind and deaf fuck.
As hawkish as McLame has been recently, I highly doubt he can capture many Paul voters regardless of what else they may have in common. To me, McLame looks and acts like a demented old person who should be in a facility for delusional people who are too dangerous to be members of the broader society, lest they hurt themselves or others.
Guess we’ll have to hear what they have to say at their convention before we’ll know if any will be coming over to Obama’s side. Think he’s done a lot of things to try to capture their attention and their votes. All his “racing to the center” I think is his effort to lure the libertarians and the fundies. That’s what I meant by the Rethugs are coming apart at the seams.
are those sunglasses he wears because of a medical condition or does he choose to wear them.
maybe an attempt to hide that everything he says, he has to read from the pre-approved cards in front of him?
I assumed the sunglasses were an attempt to make him look younger and kewler.
Bmaz saw it, and has a few choice words over at EW’s place.
He starts slowly . . .
. . . and then he really gets going. Sadly, there’s much to fuel his passion.
That triggers a visit from this guy. Not a good idea.
That’s what I’m thinking, too.
G’morning, everyone! Any coffee left?
You win the gold medal for douchebag radar.
Or maybe KO…
Thanks for pointing that out. The accompanying photo of the WH Constitution toilet-paper dispenser is a nice touch.
I agree thats why McCain would have to do something big to get the Paulites but whats bigger than mass deportations to them, closing the Federal Reserve?
Our only real chance to win Paulites is on the economic issues we are never going to get the anti immigrant Stormwatch Paulites.
Indeed, sir, you are correct in your assessment.
This gives you the authority to issue Writs of Douchebaggery.
I think so! There are little yellow feathers floating off-screen, methinks.
All other issues aside the Paul supporters want us out of Irak and that’s a big issue with them. We’ll just have to hide and watch.
Morning PW. I was waiting for my coffee to cool. Hooking up the IV now.
Bein’ stoned.
The two sites are a good ten miles apart as the traffic crawls. The Target Center’s in the Warehouse District in Minneapolis, and very easy to access from the airport via light rail. The Xcel is on the southwestern edge of downtown Saint Paul, near, ironically enough, both the Dorothy Day homeless shelter and the Irvine Park and Summit Avenue neighborhood, where Saint Paul’s old-money folks hung out prior to the invention of the automobile; now the really rich folks live out in the western Minneapolis ‘burbs like Minnetonka or Excelsior, or in northern and eastern St. Paul ‘burbs like North Oaks and Dellwood and Sunfish Lake.
And if you’ll excuse me, I have to take off again. Sorry to post and run! Now be excellent to each other, okay?
Morning PW.
Kitty pic makes my day – looks like Spring Byington
Anybody know if Cheney will is required to cede control of his shadow government at the same time Bush leaves office, or will it require force to evict him from his bunker?
Might it be determined by whom is elected President?
Can I be on the extraction team?
Right, in the unfortunate event that McCain wins, I’m sure Cheney can hang around as long as he wants.
What kind of commotion do you think it would cause if McSFB named Barnacle as his running mate? *g*
There was a good post last night at Huff Post regarding how McC dresses – and it isn’t for success. It talks about how his clothes are too big which makes him look even shorter than his 5′7″ and how sloppy he looks – especially standing beside his beautifully decked-out Cindy. Really interesting with pictures.
SouthernDragon @ 69 -
Only if you bring the friend that encouraged the departure of a previously described neighbor. *g*
I prefer to call that “Glaucoma Treatment”.
;~P
Could be risky if you are mistaken for a pen-raised bird or an elderly lawyer. Either is possible, like his boyhood heroes Hermann Goering and Bela Lugosi, Cheney has been hooked on morphine for years.
Could get ugly if Dems don’t regain their composure in time to vote in November.
Fixed.
Looks like if he had a 30″ inseam he’d be 6′2″
I think that it’s entirely possible that you’re a little off on *whose* decision that would be.
What Dick wants, Dick gets….
No, those old-guy pants come up to the chest.
sorry if that sounded ‘dirty’. But I guess that it is, no matter how ya read it… *g*
In the pictures you can see that everything is way too big for him so he’s all rumpled looking. Can’t wait for him to stand beside Obama who always is dressed perfectly – but he’s an elitist so he would be.
Wonder if he suffers from short man syndrome.
I think I remember Bill Press saying he will be at the Paul event too.
That’s right, he did it in 2000, didn’t he. Realistically I think he’s got too much shit in the street now. Seems the old man’s influence ain’t what it used to be. That’s not to say he’s not still pulling strings on his puppets but their machinations aren’t bearing much fruit. Goading Georgia to act wasn’t the brightest of ideas. I don’t think he’s up to it physically either. Let him go off and be a bitter old man in Wyoming.
and waddle like a penguin. hope they have a 3 point shooting contest. mr. tough guy war hero prolly shoots like a girl. (I think I mighta just said something that might get me in some trouble around here. did I?)
Wonder if he suffers from short man syndrome.
He presents all the symptoms….
That’s my theory too. Actually, I think we have two issues in common with Paulites: they also don’t like the liberties (no pun intended) the Administration has been taking with our civil liberties. It seems, they also believe in the Constitution, similarly to Bob Barr. He would like it if the President elect could read it and believe in it. OTOH, I see no way to make any headway with them on economic grounds. As someone mentioned earlier, they think nothing is the responsibility of the gov’t except protection of the citizenry. They don’t believe in gov’t meddling in market forces. At all.
that’s a response to twain @ 82.
It’s not really McCain’s fault. He has to wear pants that are large enough to accommodate Lieberman, Graham, the MSM, and whoever else is currently jockeying for proximity to his backside.
LOL !
Aren’t Short Ride and Miss Priss supposed to go make peace between Georgia and Russia this weekend?
That ticks me off for so many reasons. If the cease-fire he had no role in implementing holds, McCain will try to take credit.
I thought they were going to Georgia to wag their fingers at Russia
Obama raised $51 million in July to McCain’s $27 million.
Yeah! Clap Clap Clap – Dems are looking good. Smiles all around.
1. Macular degeneration is a medical condition predominantly found in elderly adults which can result in loss of central vision, which entails inability to see fine details, to read, or to recognize faces.
2. Cataracts – which is common in high sun areas AND in older pilots (my uncle had them due to his flying for the military)
I think I recognize the Napoleon in him.
Actually, I think appropriate names are:
Free Ride McCain
Short Ride Lieberman
Carpet Ride Graham
But as always, YMMV
No, but please don’t say things like that anymore anyway. It just gives him the chance to once again bring up the old war injuries. I don’t believe he can shoot due to whatever happened to his arms.
I think all adults who live long enough develop cataracts, although whether or not it requires surgery is largely a personal choice based on how much of an inconvenience it poses. Fortunately, macular degeneration is less common and is irreversible. Glaucoma would also cause increased light sensitivity.
Russia doesn’t care. Janine Zacharia, diplomatic correspondent for Bloomberg News, was on Washington Week last night and was quite blunt about the total lack of influence the US has with Russia now. No doubt that Putin is pulling all the strings and his being in Beijing was an in-your-face stance by Putin. Russia doesn’t appear to be suffering from the financial crises in the US or Europe so they and China are the world’s economic powerhouses today. It’s the first segment on the show and worth watching. Washington Week
If the schedule permits, Lindsey has always wanted to visit St. Petersburg.
I saw that last night
Tucker, eh? Is he going to be a warm-up clown, or just an usher?
Theres something about Miss Priss. Graham is always impeccably dressed, nary a hair out of place and his refined syrupy South Carolina accent.
He claims to be libertarian
Hello
I think he plays for the home team.
That my explain why he confuses Sunni and Shia if he had never heard those words spoken. Still its good to keep a tally on McCain’s health the MSM certainly won’t.
Isn’t that amazing? Fifteen years ago, their economy was completely on the skids. Apples and oranges but it gives me hope that maybe the U.S. can dig it’s way out of the hole it’s in.
Book Salon’s up
looks like a good one
that cat picture always cracks me up
and Hi OFG
Yes that is true about Cataracts but if you did a risk assessment the questions would start…..
if you live in a high sun area do you wear sunglasses every day?
Have you ever flown high altitude non-pressurized airplanes (older military)?
Then family history
Then age…..
My family has history of glaucoma then cataracts but then you add high sun state that I live in and father with macular degeneration with cataracts…and those funny sunglasses are on the dinning table…
We don’t have lot of choice. Unless and until we put a muzzle on Wall Street we’ll really end up at the bottom of the capitalist cesspool.
How are your tigers?
Also, it is only in the past 20 years that UV protection has become a common feature in sunglasses. Sunglasses without UV protection are worse than none at all because they dilate the pupils, allowing more damaging UV rays to enter. I’m guessing McCain spent a lot of time wearing aviator sunglasses that lacked UV protection.
All are well and being tigers, iow, sleeping. Laziest tigers that I ever lived with. But it’s hot and muggy and that’s what they do. In the winter it’s a different story. Thanks for asking.
No, Dr. Paul has not endorsed anyone. But he most certainly will not be endorsing McCain. He says he shouldn’t tell anyone how to vote. I believe Chuck Baldwin actually is closest to Dr. Paul on issues but Baldwin will not be on all 50 state ballots. I believe Dr. Paul is waiting till after the Republican Convention to endorse anyone (in the event it becomes brokered). I have a feeling this is going to be a historical convention.
I’m a bonafide Paulista and will say unequivicably that Paul supporters will not support Bush as you say but they would vote for a Democrat if one came forward to follow our Constitution. That’s why there are quite a few Democrats supporting Dr. Paul.
I have heard that C-span2 may be covering the Rally for the Republic. Dr. Paul ran as a Republican because he has been a Republican (not a neo-con) his whole life. He only ran as a Libertarian in one election. He has been a Republican for many years; has been a Republican in his Congressional district in Texas for 11 terms. He’s a conservative Republican.
Ron Paul is an economics scholar and predicted the current economic problems years ago. He is on the House Banking Committee and has called Bernanke down several times on what the Federal Reserve is really about. Paul knows that if we don’t allow bad businesses to fail (as they should), the prop ups and bailouts are going to cause the economic crisis to be much much worse than it will be. The market is much stronger than the prop-ups. These same things happened prior to the Great Depression. Our deficit is WAY out of control and our growth is slowing. The Federal Reserve is printing money like CRAZY and we’re paying the high prices once the new dollars hit the market. The more they print, the more the dollar is devaluing. Bernanke admitted to Paul that this inflating of the money supply is a hidden inflation tax on the middle and poor classes. I certainly didn’t vote for Bernanke nor anyone else at the Federal Reserve to place a tax on Americans.
Paul is not a Libertarian
This is not about winning the election. This is about all Americans taking back their country from the neo-cons and corrupt leaders who have hijacked our government. This is about re-educating Americans about our rule of law; the Constitution.
McIdiot couldn’t sell a darn thing to the Paulistas! I should know. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING McCain could do to win the Paul peoples’ votes. And by the way, Paul people do not want mass deportations of illegal immigrants as you say. Yes, illegal immigration is breaking the law. And McCain would NEVER win the Paul votes………for any reason.
That’s actually about right. I heard that they’ve changed the protest route (probably so they can’t be seen on national television). What a sham! I’m sure McCain just loves that Bush executive order to keep protesters away from parade routes. What ever happened to “freedom of speech”?
I’m telling you. McIdiot will not get Paul votes. He has snubbed his nose as 1.2 million Paul voters…….. he has lost them. Why do you think he started courting Latinos and Hillary supporters so hard? You’re right. Paul supporters are no for this undeclared unconstitutional Iraqi war nor do we think we should get involved in the internal affairs of every nation of this world. We need to be taking care of our own house before taking care of everyone else’s.
I am a Paulite. I’m telling you. McCain will NEVER win the Paul votes. Even if he were to offer up possibly closing the Federal Reserve…..the Paulistas would NEVER trust him. McCain needs the Reserve to fund his wars and empire-building. Nobody can touch Paul on economy issues……….nobody. There is no one else running on any party ticket that understands the economy as he does. I’m not knocking any other party candidates either. I’m an Independent. He knows what’s going on and has for YEARS. He’s been the town crier for a long time on what’s coming and until now, few believed him. He is a military man, economist, Constitutionalist (and no he doesn’t interpret it for his benefit), and absolutely knows how to understand what the repercussions years down the road are going to be on legislation being voted on now. He is a well-read man and knows how to draw parallels between American/World history and things going on today so as not to repeat history. I’ve never seen anyone like him and no, I’m not some mesmerized person following a pied piper. I jumped on his bandwagon because of a personal fight my fiance had to endure against the govt. We had to do our Constitutional rights homework to win his case (and we did). In the process, my eyes opened to the corruption that is filling our two-party government. And when I heard Paul saying things I learned on my own years ago with no reservations whatsoever, I knew he was telling the truth. This is not about just electing a person who really cares about this country and ALL it’s citizens. This is a movement that even Dr. Paul couldn’t stop if he wanted to. My thoughts on who the Paul people will vote for are these. If McCain gets the nomination….about 1% will go to Obama (because they can’t stand McCain), 1% will go to McCain (because they just don’t want to see Democrats win), the rest will split up between Constitutionalists, Libertarians, and Independent. And then there are the passionate ones who will vote their conscience and WRITE IN Ron Paul (even if they know it won’t count). But I don’t think Dr. Paul wants them to write him in. The Paulistas want a CLEAR message sent to the GOP because they have treated Paul people TERRIBLY!
If Obama really were for bringing troops home (not to Afghanistan; not to Pakistan, etc), he might get a few more Paul votes. The Paulistas want the troops home from just about everywhere in order to save our collapsing dollar. This country simply can’t afford these wars and we see the numbers being shown by an economist. All these programs we fund are being paid for by either foreign loans or the printing of dollars (inflation) by the Federal Reserve. Right now, foreigners are losing confidence in America’s growth and are starting to dump dollars. This means that the Fed’s printing presses are in overdrive. Congress doesn’t seem to be slowing up on spending money. This can’t go on forever. As inflation increases, prices across the board rise on everything. The Paulites already know that McCain has no clue on the economy and Obama knows little about it either. Both McCain and Obama are trying to bring on the economy big-wigs. They better. Because Paul alone knows what he’s doing as far as the economy is concerned. Neither Obama nor McCain will get the Paul votes on economy. Obama might get some if he were to promise bringing troops home from around the world as well as getting them out of Iraq. What other way would be quickest to slow down the oncoming collapse of the dollar?
No, they do not believe in manipulating the market with big government. The more the federal govt. gets into everything, the more we lose our civil liberties. You’re right. We agree on government taking away our freedoms. You give them an inch; they’ll take a mile. But Dr. Paul isn’t one who would do what he wants without input from Americans. I know that to be true; mostly because of how he has conducted himself in the campaign and in his new Campaign for Liberty organization. When the grassroots make suggestions, he often tries to do what he’s asked. He’s trying to re-educate Americans that our elected leaders are supposed to do what “We the People” ask them to do. I’m amazed at how often I’ve seen suggestions on a thread such as this being made and I’ll be darned if they don’t do everything they can to do it. His presidential campaign and Campaign for Liberty answered me back personally several times as opposed to canned answers from my own state representatives. I could get used to that.
And Paul’s commitment to the Constitution is in 30 years of voting. He explains every vote held up next to the Constitution. He does not interpret it for himself as some want to claim. I believe it because he has backed up what he says with actual history, letters and writings from the Revolutionary War period and our founders, the Magna Carta, etc etc etc. The man is with it on history and he has drawn all his decisions on what the Constitution means. There is no gray area in it. It was written to tie down the federal govt. because the founders knew the tyranny that would come from an uncontrolled govt. And they understood currency FAR better than we do today. They had the Continental Scrip (their own fiat money) until Franklin told King George about it. The British were enraged and wrote the Currency Act to forbid the colonists from printing their own money. This immediately pushed America into a depression. Then the Constitutional Currency was made to fund the war by the Brits which was inflated then deflated; destroying the currency. This is why our Constitution only gives the govt. the right to make our money and it should be in gold/silver. This is why Dr. Paul is so against the Federal Reserve.
“The central bank is an institution of the most deadly hostility existing against the Principles and form of our Constitution. I am an Enemy to all banks discounting bills or notes for anything but Coin. If the American People allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the People of all their Property until their Children will wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered.” – Thomas Jefferson
I meant Continental Currency in the last post. ooops
And I forgot to mention that Paul isn’t for gold/silver only. He’s in favor of competing currencies.
For those who don’t understand what the Federal Reserve is, it is a privately run and owned central bank. It is very secretive and has little oversight by our government. They print money and loan it to our government with interest. Our taxes pay for that interest; not the warm/fuzzy programs we think they are paying for. Everytime the Reserve lowers interest rates, it is inflating the money supply which in turn causes our prices to go up. This is an “inflation tax” on the middle/poor classes because when the new dollars first hit the market, it’s the politicians and rich that benefit from them because our prices haven’t risen yet in response to the inflation. Thomas Jefferson killed the first central bank. President Andrew Jackson proudly killed the 2nd one. Our government can print it’s own money fine without the Fed. Dollars simply need to be backed by something so they can’t inflate or deflate whenever they want. In the end, inflation hurts us. Some argue that after the 1970s, we ended up just fine after the money manipulation by the Fed. But there is a big difference between then and now. We weren’t in an endless war, we didn’t have 700 bases in over 120 nations, we didn’t have a MASSIVE defict as we do now, our growth was getting better, and the world still loaned us money. It’s getting bleak but Dr. Paul always has a hopeful word to add even though he knows what’s coming.
Can you tell you snagged a Paulista? ha ha. As far as those who become violently opposed to Paul because of his stance on abortion, let me just say this. I am pro-choice and am still a passionate Dr. Paul supporter. It makes every sense in the world that an ob/gyn would be pro-life. But he has said it many times before that it isn’t his place to tell others what to do. He believes this about our Constitution. If the federal govt. is forbidden to do something in the Constitution, then it’s forbidden. It gives them only certain things to do and mainly that’s to protect Americans’ individual rights. Paul believes that the more sensitive the issue, the more it should go to the states and local governments. The more the federal govt. gets into our private lives, the more it will take away our liberties.
Paul is not a racist if you come across the infamous newsletter stories. The Austin, TX NAACP president shocked Wolf Blitzer in defending Dr. Paul, saying he wasn’t a racist/ that he’d known him for years. Dr. Paul went back to his practice in the late 1980s and allowed a newletter to go out under his name. Unfortunately, he didn’t keep up with the people writing in it nor what they wrote. In a time period of about 3 years (late 1980s to about 1991), there were a few that came out with some choice racist comments that Dr. Paul did not write. If you’ve read his speeches and writings, you’d know absolutely that they weren’t by him. He had about 12 ghostwriters and my thoughts were that someone wanted to hurt his political career in the future. They did a good job. The accusation of these happening for decades was a media play on words (1980s/90s) when they only occured in about a 3 year period. Years ago, he took full responsibility for not keeping up with what went under his name and he was re-elected in his district many times afterwards. Was his entire district racist? I’ve heard some say “How could he be president if he made a mistake such as that?”. My answer was he was doing what was most important and that was being a 24/7 physician taking care of women of all races; oftentimes giving free care when they couldn’t afford it. He had his priorities straight. He has given speeches on the disproportionate amount of people jailed for drug crimes compared to those actually using them. He has brought it to light that if you were to have a group people on drugs and only 30% of them are black, why is it that about 80% in prisons for drug crimes are black? The man’s not racist.
He also is not anti-homosexual. He is for individual rights and that includes all Americans. He is not against gay marriage because he believes that what individuals do is their own personal business; as long as what we do does not infringe upon others’ individual rights. He is not for grouping people or collectivism rather protecting the individual’s right to be or do as we please (as long as it doesn’t infringe upon others’ rights). Is this not what freedom is about?
I’m sure you guys probably didn’t want to hear about Dr. Paul. I mentioned all this so you could think about it. How in the world is anyone else going to get the Paulistas votes? You tell me?
